    Expansion Team!!! (kinda)

Well, I was playing the other day, and my son was laughing 'cause I was cutting a lot of dead weight and asked if I ever cut EVERYONE and started over... On Madden I have, but not HC. So, I figured I'd give it a go.

I took the Falcons and did it - I cut everyone (some people I traded and then cut whoever I ended up getting in the trade.) I wanted to have a clear roster come the draft - and try to rebuild the team via Free Agency and the draft. When the draft started I had zero players! LOL!!!

Now, I didn't load up on draft picks, and I didn't take the easy way out and take all the sleepers either.

So, at the start of Free Agency, my cap room was $63.63 million.
At the start of the draft it was $76.89 million, and at the start of the Preseason it was $64.44 million. It will be interesting when I get into the season and have to start re-signing guys or not. I did not sign anyone during the bidding section of FA. Except my rookies, my whole team will be on a one year deal. At the start of the season my cap is $40.84 million with current penalties of $36.67 million, and $14 million in incentives.

Here's my 7 draft picks (and 5 UDFA) - my "dirty dozen" that were my first players on the team. Again, I took spots I thought were needs, and tried to listen to the GM when I could. I purposely took a few guys that don't always "end up that great" because I didn't want to cheat through the draft. I also left it with the 7 picks I got via trades/cuts/etc. and didn't move draft spots once the draft started. (figured I might as well go all in, and it would be cheap to have like 20 picks! Although it could be interesting to have an entire team of rookies to start 2008 with.. something else I've done in Madden back in the day but obviously not HC)

    My 2008 draft:

    R1P3 Jake Long
    R2P37 Chad Henne
    R2 P48 Pat Lee
    R3 p68 A. Molden
    R4P100 B. Giacomini
    R4P113 J. Shirley
    R6 P166 W. Gilberry

    UDFA

    RG Flagler
WR Arrington (fig I had Henne, might as well get him one of his WRs)
    MLB R. Jackson
CB D. Tribble (best name ever)
    C J. Richard

    So that was my 12.

Here's my starting roster... again, I could have snapped up a few more rookie UDFAs that were cut, but decided to keep that to a minimum. I think I only added Colt Brennan to be my 3 and Star Wells, a 'made up guy', because his name was cool and I needed another FS.

    So, there you have it.

I was actually surprised at some of the talent I found, again, I didn't sign anyone till the preseason started, and didn't trade for anyone - I wanted to see who was in the heap. TE and OLB are huge concerns for me - but just about every other position I found at least some guys who had 80s for POT - whether they get there is something else entirely...

Our first game is vs the Lions, but I'm waiting till I have time to play a while with a new slider set (once I see Algoody's final sliders) before I get far into it, 'cause I don't want to skew anything, nor change sliders mid-season since I never sim. Plus, I might see if I can do the same thing with the 'Fins, or any other teams just for the heck of it and see what kinds of teams I can build, then settle on one and see if I can make 'em champions!

First game with the new sliders. For the sake of speed, I didn't enter every single stat like YPC, etc. and just listed the top defensive tackler, and whoever made a play - like a sack or pick.

Couldn't believe the drops. 7 drops by my team - very frustrating. No way you can win a tight game like that even wide open passes right into guys' arms...

Ernie Sims was the entire game - he had 4 picks. It was insane. The killer was when we got the ball back with 2 minutes left.. 21-14... Chad Henne decides to do some ballerina spin throw the ball at the ground play and Sims somehow scoops it up from wayyy too far to make sense and runs it 25 yards to put it away. Couldn't believe it.

We lost starting running back Hall in the first quarter, but the other guys picked up the slack, I'm waiting on the trainer's report. Also lost our nickel corner, Tribble in the second. Couldn't get near Kitna to sack him, he was just dodging everyone like Fran Tarkenton.

        POST GAME

Tribble is out 1-4 days. 4 days till game time
        Cribbs is out 1-3 weeks
        Hall is out 2-5 days
        Shirley is out 1-3 weeks

Signed WR Greg Lewis to a 1 yr $540k contract and released WR Tab Perry. Greg had more upside than Tab, and with Cribbs still out, I wanted a better all-around guy - pretty much all his measurables were better than Tab's, esp his catching ability - which with 7 drops we need to improve on.

TE Scott Chandler suffered a hamstring injury in practice and will miss 2-4 weeks. I had no choice but to release him and signed FA TE Twan Harvey. (cpu generated, 67 overall) to fill the void. We'll see if he develops, he has good athletic ability but a poor grasp of route running.

I am leery of signing a lot of CPU generated rookie FAs that popped up after the draft. Some could be an improvement, some, like Twan are average guys that not sure what will happen. What do you guys think? Sign a few of them, or it's not quite right since they were made up and added to the rosters and FA pool after the draft? I see a lot of rookie FAs and cpu-generated FAs out there - just curious if you think I should add some or keep passing on them or I'm over-thinking it?

        Gametime
        - Tribble and Hall both made it back and will play this week.

Up next, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!

Although the Bucs won their first game of the year, starting QB Jeff Garcia was injured and is out, so Brian Griese (not a downgrade) will lead the offense out for this division game. Michael Turner is the back, and Galloway, Hilliard and Jerome Simpson are the 3 key wideouts. Rookie Trevor Laws starts at one of the DT spot and rookie CB Zach Bowman is the nickel corner. Should be a tough matchup, the Bucs are are loaded with Pro Bowl vets in many key places, some - like Brooks and Barber are already in HOF discussions! Wonder if my cast of cast-offs are up to the task?

(prob won't get to play this one till tomorrow, we'll see.)

How did you not incur major cap penalties from cutting everyone?

He did have 36 million in cap penalties, but he has the cap room to cover it. You don't really run into cap penalty issues unless cap room starts to be a issue. He'll have to watch the incentives going forward though.

              Re: Expansion Team!!! (kinda)

LOL! Yeah, 36 million is a good deal of cap penalties. The Falcons also benefit from not having a lot of mega contracts like teams that have a Manning, Ben, Romo, etc.

here's a pic I took right before the draft I meant to post with my zero roster...

I want to try it with a couple other teams, but aside from the 'Fins, I think it would be very hard to clear the entire roster by the draft. You have to find a team with a ton of cap room and very few big contracts/bonuses...

Hopefully I can get the next game in today... if not tomorrow...

And yeah, incentives are gonna be huge, as will deciding who to re-sign. Guess we'll see.
