Really not many surprises amongst the league leaders. Brady had an off year, but other than that all QBs had typical stats. With Hammermill my DC instead of a HC no one is running a crazy 95% pass offense. Overall the average yard per carry around the year is up which is a positive sign as it was lower than I wanted last year. Small backs continue to disappoint. Barry Sanders and Marshall Faulk have been disappointments and can barely crack the 3 YPC barrier. Jerry Rice only gained 1147 yards which is a minor let down, but SF had 3 1000 yard receivers + 700 yards from Vernon Davis.

    Rookies of note:

Rambis was the only QB to play consistently. Conroy started a couple of games for Houston as mentioned in an earlier game.

Sweetney led the league in yards, yards per carry, and rushing TDs. Kendrick House missed a majority of the year with an injury. Sweetney was the only rookie RB to receive more than 50 carries.

Tyrus Duhon had a great year for Miami. The #3 overall pick caught 63 passes for 1265 yards and 6 TDs. No other rookie WR or TE was top 4 on their team in catches.

A couple things to note here the interception numbers are pretty high and the sack numbers are pretty low. I always saw this when playing a franchise but it never really registered until I started recording the stats. My take is that QBs never know when to take a sack or throw the ball away. The hurry numbers really seem to indicate this as hurries aren’t being converted over to sacks easily. What this causes is an excess number of INTs throw in the game due to poor footwork when throwing. Not listed on the leaders for Hurries was Warren Sapp who had 88. This means Tampa had basically 3 of the top 5 leaders for hurries and 2 of them play DT.

Brian Urlacher had a monter year nearly leading in tackels and INTs.

    Rookies of Note:

Martin McPeak had a big year for the Redskins with 94 tackles.

Andre Dalembert only had 3 sacks for San Diego, but they play a 3-4, Thaddeus Cheeks seems to be doing all right as a run stuffer in AZ.

Antoine Jefferson and Ryan Spradlin had solid seasons at FS.

What stands out to me is the Patriots record. The AFC EAST was dominant this year. Teams that run too much don’t score and the Cowboys and Chargers are prime examples. I could see any of the division winners from the NFC making it to the Super Bowl. In the AFC I think it will come down to Bills vs Colts.

            Game Notes

Denver finished last year 7-9. This year they reversed the record and won the AFC West by a game over Oakland. Last year when we faced Denver we lost at home 31-21 in fairly close game. Denver hasn’t changed their coaching staff since then and their team is mostly intact from our first meeting. They did add Kyle Vaden Bosch to play at LE in their 3-4 system.

It appears that Terrell Davis will miss this the first round of the playoffs with a severe pulled hamstring, Davis has not played since week 15.

Normally Denver’s offense is quite threatening, but with Davis out it makes them one dimensional. This doesn’t mean it will be easy. Elway is arguably the best quarterback of all time. He has 3 solid options at WR in Thomas, Smith, and Decker. Plus Shannon Sharpe is a HOF TE. I’ll play a lot of nickel, dime and rover just daring them to beat up our front 7 and force Montee Ball to beat us.

The Broncos have a really good defense and we struggled against them last year. This year our passing game should do a better job taking advantage of their large rush linebackers who aren’t good in coverage. Vaden Bosch, Traylor, and Pryce aren’t exactly the most intimidating pass rushers on the line so we know they’ll have to blitz.

It is a winnable game on the road for my first playoff test.

            Broncos win the toss.

Denver goes 3 and out after Ball lost 5 on hand off right.

Rambis to Owens on 3rd and 13 for 34 yards.

Denver stops us in the redzone, Folk makes from 34.

3rd and 6 from DEN 26, Rambis side steps a sack and finds Hill over the middle, Hill breaks free and sprints into the end zone.

Denver has been awful on offense. No rhythm, Elway is finding the right guy for the most part. Either they are catching it out of bounds, dropping the pass, or getting hit in the facemask by an Elway fastball. They keep ending up 1-2 yards short on 3rd down 0-3 thus far.

Rambis bailed us out again on 3rd down we’ve started out 6/7. We score again, this time Sweetney from 3 yards out.

Thomas gets hurt and is out for the game. Harris will slide inside and Barnes comes in as the OLB.

Denver converts on one 3rd and short but can’t repeat the feat.

Rambis again on 3rd down, I am starting to understand the hype.

Sweetney fumbles at midfield, his 2nd of the game, the first time it results in a turnover.

4th and inches from our 27 and Denver opts to kick a FG, I really wish the CPU was more aggressive. Rayner converts from 44.

Rambis finds TO streaking up the seam for a 28 yard TD.

2 plays later Verner picks off Elway at DEN 44.

The next play Bailey wins the jump ball over TO.

Elway is able to charge Denver to the NYJ 26, Rayner makes another field goal with 7 seconds left in first half.

We go into the half leading by 18 with the ball to start off with. This looks like a win.

Smith fumbles at NYJ 28 and Revis recovers. Denver can’t catch a break.

We run the ball 9 times in a 12 play 72 yard drive. There is even a Shane Vereen sighting. Sweetney scores the TD from 3 yards out.

Denver finally gets the passing game going but its too little too late. Sharpe scores 4 yard TD.

            Onside kick recovered by NYJ.

Folk misses a 46 yard attempt with 1:53 left.

Elway figured something out because he starts carving us up, but it doesn’t matter. Ball scores on a swing route for a 6 yard TD, but fails on 2 PT.

The onside fails as well. Rambis kneels for first playoff win.

The score was misleading this one wasn’t even close.

Denver was easy to stop as I didn’t have to worry about the run game.

On offense Rambis is in the zone.

            First 8 games: 143/272 (52%), 6 TDs, 17 INTs.
            Since: 159/261 (60%), 13 TDs, 6 INTs

              Game Notes

We played the Colts in Week 13 and it was something of a turning point for our team. It was a close game but we scored 22 points in the final quarter and won by 14. Kevin Walter killed us from the slot and it is something I will have to plan for. There is nothing I can really do to stop Peyton so I will try to control the clock. On offense I expect Stephen Hill to have a big game out of the slot as there are a lot of ways to expose a cover 2 D from this position.

I’ll have mixed feelings if we win. Our team shouldn’t be this good this fast and I want a challenge. I have plans to make things a little more difficult next season.

Colts win the toss and defer

Rambis is intercepted on the 3rd play of the game. Sanders takes it back to NYJ 46.

Rambis throws his 2nd INT at IND 17, not the best day for him to struggle.

Dallas Clark fumbled at NYJ 31, Landry recovers and returns to the 43.

It has been a sloppy game thus far.

2 plays later Sweetney fumbled, luckily 2 Colts whiffed on picking in up we retain possession.

Floyd makes a spectacular jumping catch gaining 25 yards and setting up our first score. Hillis, giving Sweetney a rest, gets 2 carries near the goaline taking the 2nd in for a 1 yard TD.

Hillis filled in for Sweetney after a big hit and fumbles off a draw play. Indy recovers.

Peyton is efficient on drive finally, he hits Wayne on a slant pattern for the TD.

Devin Hester responds immediately, he shakes one tackle, breaks it to the outside, runs through an arm tackle and finds his way to the endzone.

Adalius Thomas annihaltes James on a 3rd and 1 off the right guard, James leaves game.

Pass gets tipped and lands in the hands of Antoine Winfield, it is the 3rd pick for Rambis in the half and 4th turnover for us so far.

Manning completes pass to NYJ 2, but we sack him on consecutive plays. It doesn’t matter, Manning fines Wayne on skinny Post for the TD.

Rambis throws his 4th pick of the half in 2 minute drill, Winfield again.

Ingram, filling in for James, ducks between 2 defenders and finds open space on his way for a 26 yard TD.

Hester does it again! Why don’t teams kick the other way?

Manning in 2 minute drill was ruthless. Finds Wayne yet again for a 14 yard TD.

We enter half time down by 7. If it wasn’t for Devin Hester this would be a blowout. Last Season I saw a ton of kick returns for TDs but it seemed to die down. I’ll have to supersim all kickoff returns no matter what from now on.

I guess its too bad James got hurt because Ingram stiff armed his way into the endzone after a 16 yard run.

4th and 2 down 14 from our own 46 the defining moment comes up. I got for it and call HB blast. Sweetney runs the wrong direction, it looked like how a rookie takes a carry on an unlearned play. Not sure what happened, but that could end the game.

Over-reacted, Revis comes up with clutch INT the very next play.

We fail to capitalize on great field position and go 3 and out.

Folk nails 52 yard field goal.

Floyd snatches the ball away from a potential Bethae INT and takes it 44 yards for the TD, Sweetney comes up short on 2 PT conversion attempt.

We force a 3 and out and receive the ball at NYJ 41, down 5 with 4:00 left.

Rambis finds Stephen Hill deep and connects for a 38 yards score with 2:53 left.

This time Sweetney crosses the goalline for the 2 PT conversion.

Incomplete pass, sack, incomplete pass. IND is forced to punt with 2:11 left.

Sweetney fumbled again, this time after he had seemingly gained a first down on 3rd and 3. Indy having already blown 2 timeouts earlier on the drive narrowly avoids nail in the coffin.

Manning fails to be the hero. We were able to cause pressure blitzing him forcing bad throws. Indy came up 1 yard short on a 4th and 10 attempt from mid field.

Devin Hester was basically the Konami Code. Rambis and Sweetney tried their best to give the game away. Manning was great all game, but his line failed him at the end. For the second time this season we have beat the Colts on the road because of a huge 4th quarter.

I never expected we’d be playing for a trip for the Super Bowl. We really had no business winning that game. Rambis only completed 36% of his passes and threw 4 picks and Sweetney fumbled twice. It was a cheap win.

                Game Notes

Buffalo is the last team to have beaten us winning 24-21 in Week 11 kicking a field goal as time expired. Three weeks earlier we won on the road against the Bills 27-24 so there is a nice bit of symmetry in our matchups.

In the past their blitzing outside linebackers have really caused us headaches and I will have to look to max protecting in key situations. Jim Kelly has been great in the games we played against him and for some reason Andre Reed has been the toughest receiver for me to stop. If we can contain Thomas in the run game and force Kelly to utilize his 2nd or 3rd choices through the air we’ll have a good chance at winning.

This game is a little bit of a Head Coach Ethical dilemma. I usually will sim each week of the playoffs until the beginning of the off-season. I do this to watch out for odd head coaching changes that frankly don’t make any sense. I can’t save any of the teams who didn’t make the playoffs from poor decisions, but I can usually manipulate the scenarios for ones that did.

In the sims I’ve done I kept noticing something that really annoyed me. The Bears would fire Trestman if they lost to the Bucs, and Gruden would leave if he lost to the Bears. I’ve even seen Trestman, who won the coach of the year, fired after winning it all. Marrone usually loses his job if the Bills lose to us. This just doesn’t make sense and I want to avoid it. If I play this game I’ll be locked into whatever decision the Head Coach gods make on these coaches and thus far 9/10 times 2 of these coaches leave.

The issue is something I didn’t factor in when creating the roster and that is the personality of the Head Coach. In a normal dynasty you’ve likely seen Reed, Gruden, and Martz make hasty decisions and will sit out a year. I don’t want this to happen and would like to have the best coaches to play each and every year. If I ever start a new dynasty I will change all of the coach’s personalities to Ally or Traditionalist and won’t have to deal with this issue. If anyone reading this wants to use my roster (posted on page 1) please let me know and I can make a version where coaches won’t leave all of the sudden for no good reason.

All that being said I have a sim version saved where Trestman, Gruden, and Marrone all keep their job. In it we lost to the Bills in this game.

I will play this game one time and one time only. If it results in any of the 3 aforementioned coaches losing their jobs I will use the sim version and there will be no box score.

                Bills win the toss

Buffalo drives down the field, but stalls at NYJ 21. Hopkins makes from 38.

Floyd fumbles off a hitch pattern, Bills recover.

Bills capitalize, Kelly to Chandler for 9 yard TD.

Rambis hits Owens over the middle for a 19 yard TD.

Verner taps pass to Rhodes who makes a big pick.

Sweetney needs 3 tried from the 3 to get into the endzone.

Harris picks Kelly whos struggling with passes over the middle.

Bills stop us on 3 straight plays from the 8. Folk makes a 27 yard FG.

Thomas fumbles, we recover at BUF 21 with 1:54 left in the 1st half.

Next play Floyd makes 1 handed grab for TD.

Revis jumps in front of Reed for another interception. We get the ball at BUF 49.

Rambis blew it, he didn’t see Whitner come up and tried to sneak a pass to Hill. Whitner takes it 69 yards for a TD.

Pearson breaks a return for a TD in supersim.

Kelly gets shaken up, misses entire 3rd, game is basically over for the Bills.

Kelly returned finally, and threw a pick in his first attempt.

Rambis found Jolly for a 7 yard TD.

Kelly was just awful throwing 4 INTs.

We go from by far the worst team in the league to playing in a super bowl. We are too good too soon.

I get to the main menu and wait …and wait …. No announcement from the Bears or Bills. Both Coaches are staying on and we’ll face Tampa Bay for the Title.

                  Game Notes

I think back to last year week 17. We had lost 14 games straight and there was no guarantee that I would keep my job. We beat the Dolphins and there seemed to be hope for the next season.

We won the off-season hiring the best possible OC and DC. We signed the top 2 FAs available and made a trade to grab the top 2 players in the draft.

In a normal head coach franchise this would pretty much guarantee a Super Bowl Champion. I did not see this coming.

We played Tampa in Week 3 and it was a fantastic game. We pulled off the upset in overtime and at that time Tampa was 0-3. The Bucs are loaded at every position. On offense they have weapons everywhere: House, Martin, and Alstott provide 3 capable power runners. Jackson, Martin, Galloway, and Winslow might be the best receiving core in the game. Finally Tampa has a HOF QB in Steve Young. They have all the pieces in place for a lethal west coast offense. I am really interested to see House as he was out with an injury in our matchup earlier this year.

Defensively Tampa has the perfect head coach defense. They can pressure the QB from their front 4. Adams, Sapp, and McCoy were all in the top 5 for QB hurries. David and Brooks cover tons of ground and are great fits in a zone scheme and Hardy Nickerson is a solid tackling machine inside. The secondary has playmakers at all 4 spots and Barber + Talib is the best cover 2 combo in the game.

I’ve adjusted my slider set for the big game:

                  OFFENSE (USER / CPU)
                  QB Accuracy 20 / 25
                  Pass Blocking 45 / 50
                  WR Catching 25 / 30
                  RB Ability 45 / 55
                  Run Blocking 70 / 85

                  DEFENSE (USER / CPU)
                  Awareness 35 / 50
                  Knockdowns 55 / 55
                  Interceptions 5 / 5
                  Break Block 70 / 85
                  Tackling 25 / 25

For special teams I bumped kickoff power up to 100. This should make the game act more like present day where the KO has been moved up.

Fun note about the game Tampa is actually playing at home.

We win the toss and will receive.

Sweetney runs for 42 to the 1 yard line. TE Johnson called for holding on first attempt. Rambis throws fade to Owens for an 8 yard TD on 3rd down.

Tampa looked amazing on offense in the first drive. House appears to be a solid runner and Steve Young is hitting his marks. He found Galloway for an 11 yard TD.

Tampa was killing us on 3rd downs converting 4 in a row of 6 or more. Young completed a pass to Winslow at NYJ 5 but fumbled. Kyle Wilson recovers.

Sweetney has been awesome early on. He ran up the middle, broke a tackle, and found daylight for a 47 yard TD. 8 rushes for 121 yards.

John Lynch covers a ton of ground to get to the sideline to steal a fade attempt from Stephen Hill. The play would have resulted in a TD and dropped the Bucs to down 14.

We enter the locker room up 7. A Winslow fumble bailed us out, but Lynch made a huge INT bailing Tampa out. It is going to be close and I doubt I can count on Sweetney to be so absurdly good.

Bucs drove to our 21, but we came up with a big sack on 3rd and 6. Lindell makes the 40 yard attempt.

Barron makes a nice leaping interception.

Bucs can be so hard to stop on O. Young finds Winslow for a 19 yard TD and Tampa takes the lead with 12:25 remaining.

Rambis hits Hill on deep post on first play of the drive, but Hill fumbles. Recovered by TB and returned to NYJ 49.

House rumbles for a huge 18 yard gain on 3rd and 10. I might target him in the off-season as TB will never get 100% out of him without an elite trainer.

Jackson drops pass over the middle and it ends up in Kerry Rhodes’ hands. He just seems to be in the right place at the right time all the time! Rhodes has at least 3 picks of this fashion this season. A giant play inside our 10 yard line. If Tampa had scored a TD there they’d be up 10 with less than 9 to play.

Tampa’s D tightens and we had to settle for a 49 yard field goal. Tie game Tampa ball with 4:58 left.

Steve Young scrambled away from pressure, turned up field, and was laid out by Gholston. Young fumbles, picked up by Bryant and returned to TB 18.

Rambis hits Jolly on PA pass, tackled at TB 1, Sweetney lost 3 on first attempt but scored on second. Jets with lead with 4:06 remaining.

Tampa was driving in the 2 minute drill. Verner makes a leaping interception at our own 16 with 1:44 left. Sweetney picked up 20 on 3rd and 5 sealing the game and clinching the championship.

Rambis kneels and the confetti flys as the Jets win their first Championship since 1968!

It was a great game but Tampa had some costly turnovers. For a while I thought this was going into overtime, but Verner came through in the clutch.

Maceo Sweetney was named the Super Bowl MVP with 169 yards and 2 touchdowns. The rookie from Tennessee looks destined to be a hall of famer. I’ve had Boar Jackson and Ozzie Jones before and Sweetney is by far the best back I’ve ever drafted.

This was a shock. The beatdowns of season 1 still haunt me and it is amazing to see the difference in team performance. I went back to read the notes from earlier games this season and it is still surprises me. We looked to be an average team in the NFL, but somehow we ended up Champions. Through the first 10 games of the season we had a point differential of -56! Even if you took out the Patriots 50 point win we still had the look of an average to below average team.

I am really excited about next year and think some changes will really even out the game again.

There were some odd moves. I wish Andy Reid would have stayed with the Chiefs. It will be interesting to see who he takes over next year.

I liked the hire the Bengals made. Del Rio already has 3-4 personnel in Cincy and a great set of playmakers to work with on offense.

The Chargers seemed like the perfect place for Andy Reid to land, but they’ll have Marvin Lewis for at least one year. The defense is a fit, but Rivers might struggle in a vertical passing attack.

The Chiefs, Panthers, and Cowboys all made internal promotions. I didn’t like a single one of these moves.

They’ll be 7 coordinator or higher candidates next year who are free agents now. I wish Childress and Hammermill had time to find new jobs before I dumped them.

I vowed to make the game harder for year 3 and it starts with the coaching staff. I dumped Childress and Hammermill and replaced them internally. Kippy Brown and Dan Quinn would be below average as coordinators in the default roster and will be the worst coordinators in the game with this set. Mackert, Harris, Miraldi, and Johnson were all that was left over and they are fake position coaches that enter the game after year 1. They also will be the worst in their league at their positions and don’t even benefit from having max potential like all the other coaches on my roster.

I gave a grade to each player based on the role in which I see them and how they fit my roster. There won't be a whole lot of turnover this season.

I will limit myself to acquiring one starting level player either by trade of free agent.

I want to move TO to a divisional rival with Buffalo making the most sense. If none of the teams in my division are interested I will just release TO and let him go wherever he wants.

It was a bit odd, Bo Jackson and Ed Reed were both released from longer contracts and then ended up re-signing with their old team. I made 0 signings. I was surprised that the Vikings didn’t franchise Chris Carter, they’ve made some terrible decisions over the past 2 years.

I am pretty sure I recorded the trade correctly. I moved TO to Miami where he’ll combine with Fryar and Duhon to be an elite receiving core. He is an upgrade over Wallace, who only had 1 year left in his deal. Wallace goes to Buffalo where he’ll be an upgrade over Stevie Johnson at #2 and allow Johnson to slide into the slot. We receive C.J Spiller who will best used on our team. I can move him around as an occasional slot receiver, backup running back, and kick returner.

Tons of CBs and WRs went off the board. I really was hoping that Dallas would take Davis. Beachum isn’t a good fit to their system and they already have Emmitt Smith and Demarco Murray. I may need to step in and move Smith to a team that needs a RB.

I was pretty happy that Conroy fell all the way to us in the 2nd. He’ll compete with Spiller for #3 role initially and could contend with Hill or Floyd as a full time starter. I mostly moved down to grab more picks in the future. I picked up a few players who could fill a hole for a year or so, but I doubt anyone outside Conroy will be more than a role player.

I traded a 2011 6th round pick for Sam Bradford. I was interested trading for him after a 4 games in the first season, but I couldn’t convince the Rams to make a deal. He’ll be a useful backup.

                        3 Team Deal

Basically I break even with late round picks, Demarco Murray and Trent Richardson become FAs, Colts give up a small pick for Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys clear the path for Beachum while getting a draft pick.

I did this because it makes the Colts better and the Cowboys then won't waist Beachum. If Smith was in Dallas he would start and Beachum would never play. At least in this way they get some compensaton instead of a giant cap if they chose to stick with Smith and release CC next year. The Cowboys could also bring in Richardson as the backup.

I included the overall records for each 2 over the past 2 years. In the first Year of the franchise the Ravens lost to the Bills in the Wildcard round. Last year, the Ravens improved their record to 10-6 but missed the playoffs losing the clincher to the Steelers.

The core of the Ravens roster hasn’t changed over the past 2 years. Baltimore has a power run attack with Ray Rice and will use Flacco’s arm in the vertical pass game. T.J. Houshmanzdeh has been Flacco’s main man over the past 2 years. He is a great target on intermediate routes, although his age might be starting to catch up with him. Jacoby Jones has actually outplayed Torrey Smith and is the #2 WR for the Ravens. Todd Heap provides Baltimore with a giant target in the redzone. The Ravens had a solid offensive line that towers over most Ds. Ogden is a mainstay and future HOF at LT.

The Ravens run a pressure 3-4 defense. In the off-season they signed Jamaal Williams to replace Ted Washingotn at the nose tackle. Williams is flanked by Haloti Ngata and Jarret Johnson creating a strong line against the run. The Ravens create pressure from their outside linebackers: Peter Boulware and Terrel Suggs. Both are tremendous players because they can provide just enough in pass coverage to be a threat on all downs. The heart and soul of the entire team is MLB Ray Lewis. Ray is one of the best players in the league and will do anything asked of him. In the secondary I moved Ed Reed to cornerback as his coverage skills as a FS aren’t effectively utilized with CPU AI. Reed is rated at 95 as a corner so I doubt there would be much complaining from the Raven’s staff. The other cornerback is Chris McCallister who is one of the best in man to man coverage. The Ravens drafted 2 SSs, both of whom I had an interest in. Marcel Rayford from Oregon State is a huge hitter and should be a terror in the box. Dontrell McArthur was also an interesting prospect. He hits like a linebacker, but may lack the athletic ability and coverage skills to become a full time starter.

For us the game won’t be as exciting as the first pre-season game last year. I am interested to see how CJ Spiller can do as a utility player and if Delbert Conroy will be able to contribute this season.

                          We got crushed 17-3.

I played the starters 1 quarter, but only called unlearned and learned plays.

Really early to judge, but the game felt harder. I know it is pre-season so I’ll wait to truly judge.

Bradford look awful, basically no redeeming qualities in his performance.

Spiller looked the part. He broke a few nice runs, flashed hands out of the backfield and as a slot receiver. He did fumble once so it is something to keep track of.

Conroy had a pretty good game and I expect I’ll be able to rotate him in and out of the lineup.

A bright spot was Damon Neysmith the TE out of Delaware St. It would be nice if he could emerge as a quality backup TE.

I signed Thomas Dwyer. The former first round pick was let go by San Diego. I already have Devin Hester so this is more a bit of curiosity; if he flashes something over the next 3 games I could stash him.

Houston finished year 1 7-9 and slipped a game to 6-10 last year. If Gary Kubiak doesn’t improve I could easily see a head coaching change here.

The Texans have a lot of talent on defense. JJ Watt, Mario Williams, and Tim Bowens are the best 3 man line in the game and Watt and Williams might be the best DE combo no matter what the scheme. They have a solid secondary led by 2nd year player Anotine Jefferson and a competent LB core with Ryans and Cushing.

On offense they are just a few pieces away. Foster is an Elite running back, Andre Johnson is one of the best in the league at WR, and they have 3 all pros on the line in Duane Brown, Chris Meyers, and Leon Searcy. Houston needs to find a compliment to Andre Johnson and figure out if Schaub could win a playoff game.

Not a whole lot learned here. Played the 1st string 1 quarter again and then subs for rest of the game. I supersimmed the 2nd half. Bradford looked a lot better and Conroy had 3 catches with the first string from the slot.

                          Jets win 38-28.

The Steelers finished 7-9 in year 1 and improved to 10-6 the following year winning their division. Pittsburgh won in the Wildcard round against Miami, but lost to Buffalo in the 2nd round. The Steelers are my Week 1 opponent so I will save my preview until then.

I signed Letroy Jackson. The OLB out of Wake Forest was the number 24 overall pick in last year’s draft. He has good athletic skills so could contribute on special teams, Barnes and Scott are FAs at the end of the year so he could become a solid backup LB.

We were destroyed. Steelers played their Starters the entire first half and they reappeared in the 4th quarter. I only played my starters for ½ the first quarter. Steelers 48-6.

The Vikings have actually been a little disappointing given the talent they have on offense. They’ve gone 9-7 both seasons. After losing in the Wildcard Round the Vikings fired Leslie Frasier and brought in Norv Turner. They’ve made some questionable personal decisions allowing Jack Del Rio, Antoine Winfield, and Matt Birk to walk in year one and Chris Carter in year 2. I play the Vikings later on in the year and will have a full preview then.

Another game another beatdown. Conroy had a really good game and won the #3 spot outright.

Really not sure what to make of the pre-season given I barely played starters and called all unlearned plays. The game seemed harder again for sure and I’m really looking forward to the regular season.

The team hasn't changed too much from last year's Super Bowl squad. Offensively TO and Golden Tate are gone, replaced by Delbert Conroy and C.J. Spiller. Conroy won the starting slot spot by a mile. He looked great in pre-season and could be in contention for rookie of the year. Spiller will also spot Sweetney at running back and return some kicks. I changed my philosophy on TEs to Blocking. It seems to help out a tiny bit with development as their production is always at 100 because they rarely give up sacks. On the OLINE I shifted some pieces around and am hoping to get good production out of two rookies: Rashanti Dumas and Neil McCray. This has been a weakness for my team for 2 years and maybe some new blood will turn things around.

Overall it is a decent offensive team that relies on Sweetney to move them up and down the field. I plan to rotate my WRs and have a spread attack through the air. I am hoping Hill, Floyd, Conroy, Spiller, and Jolly all can pass the 750 yard barrier.

Defensively it is the same starting 11 that was on the field for our super bowl win. This is the last year the whole crew will be together and I am hoping we can continue the momentum of the 2nd half of last season on D. I did add a few promising young players in Elliot at LE and Holmes at SS.

The owner set the expectation as: Win the Conference Championship. I'd rather under promise and over deliver. I said we'd finish above .500. I really am unsure as to how this team will play. Without elite coordinators the team did appear to struggle in the pre-season. In all honesty I don't think we were deserving of the title last year. We avoided injuries and got hot at the right time.

If this season is a continuation of the last half of last year I'll likely start a new franchsie. I have some ideas on how to make the game harder and I would limit my performance rating to 3 right off the bat.

                              Game Notes

The Steelers are a very talented team and have been in the playoff mix in each of the past 2 seasons. On offense they are led by Big Ben. The 6’5” QB has a good throwing power, and accurate arm, but can extend plays with above average mobility and elite strength for a QB. Roethlisberger is the hardest QB to sack in pocket in the game. Jerome Bettis, The Bus, leads the Steelers run game. The Notre Dame product is a load at 250 pounds and will bowl over and drag defenders on his way to the end zone. Pittsburgh has a elite receiving core with clearly defined roles. Plaxico Burress is the Red Zone threat at 6’5”, Burress has great hands and top tier leaping ability making him a force in the game. Hines Ward has no fear. He is the best blocking WR in the game, has great hands and route running ability. He is Roethlisberger’s go to guy when they need to move the chains. Antonio Brown is the home run hitter, but to categorize him as just that wouldn’t be fair. Brown is a great route runner and has tremendous hands as well. Heath Miller provides Big Ben with a great security blanket and is a good run blocker. The Steelers line is built from the inside out. Alan Faneca, Maurice Pouncey and David Decastro are the best group of interior lineman in the league and lead the way for The Bus.

On defense the Steelers run a 3-4 zone blitz scheme. You can expect to see blitzers from any position on every single down. Their defensive line is a little weak, but all fit schematically. Brett Kiesel, Aaron Smith, and Shaun Rodgers are all powerful players, but aren’t threatening in nickel packages. At linebacker Harrison, Timmons, Farrior and Woodley all can rush the QB and stuff the run covering the field from sideline to sideline. In secondary the Steelers 2 future hall of famers in Ron Woodson and Corner and Troy Polamalu at SS. Both are amongst the best ever at their positions. The Steelers have tried to bolster their secondary in the draft far selecting corner Mario Markland and Free Safety Jarvis Richmond in the first round of the previous two drafts. Markland appears to have been a reach but has some potential, while Richmond has bust written all over him with awareness and learning issues.

This is a great litmus test in week 1 of the season. The Steelers haven’t had turnover in their roster or coaching staff. They have been in contention for the playoffs both years and won their division last. They play a scheme defensively that I have faced the least of all major schemes in head coach and have a solid balanced offense.

If I have no problems beating them it means changing coordinators did not do enough to make the game more challenging again. I am hoping for a close game that comes down to a few big plays or the final minutes.

                              Jets win the toss

We drove down to the 1. 4th down I go for it and Sweetney carries it in. Thus far it does not look like coordinators have made a difference.

2nd play of Steelers drive, Roethlisberger throws into coverage, picked off by Rhodes who goes untouched for 6.

Steelers go 3 and out, Rambis finds Jolly off play action in the flat for a 78 yard gain. Jolly is brought down at the 1. I give Jolly a carry from 1 yard out. He gets into the endzone this time.

Not exactly a start that indicates the game is getting harder again.

Another Steelers 3 and out, our drive stalls at PIT 14. Folk makes 34 yard field goal.

Steelers show sign of life, Big Ben finds Ward on slant pattern. We are in a cover 2 D and Ward breaks the tackle of FS Landry. No one is even close to Hines as he tip toes into the end zone

Floyd fumbles off of a curl route, Steelers return to NYJ. All of the sudden a blowout could become a game.

Big Ben finds Ward for 2nd time in 2 minutes for another TD.

Folk misses from 48. Steelers have a real chance now.

Rhodes hits Roethlisberger on attempt over the midde, causes errant throw that lands in David Harris’ hands for an INT.

Sweetney fumbled at PIT 18, Steelers recover with 2:04 left in the second half.

I had pushed Floyd to #3 on the Depth Chart. With :48 seconds left in the 2nd he fumbled again this time in Steelers territory. Bad day for Floyd, hes been benched for the game.

Graham makes FG from 36 yards out.

Sweetney fumbled again this time at NYJ 21 while trying to run the clock out. Steelers don’t even attempt a play. Graham makes the 47 yard attempt.

                              Bettis fumbles midfield, Jets recover.

I drive the ball down to the 2 yard line, Jolly has had a great day so far so I decide to reward him again.

Floyd redeems himself, as the #4 WR he runs a streak route, Steelers blow coverage, Rambis finds him for a 57 yard TD.

Steelers answer with a nice drive. Bettis carries it in from 1 out, Bettis also good for 2.

We go 3 and out and the Steelers cannont be stopped in the passing game. Roethlisberger has way too much time and Steelers score on a 7 yard slant to Antonio Brown. Steelers are down 3 with 5:03 remaining.

We pick up 2 first downs, but can’t get a 3rd.

Verner tries to jump on a hitch route to Hines Ward, he misses, and Ward takes it 55 yards for the TD and the lead.

Jets take over with 1:45 left down 4.

4th and 4 from Pittsburgh 27, 5 wide, Rambis drops back waits … waits… launches it to Conroy with 1 on 1 coverage in the endzone. Conroy leaps in the air shielding the defender from the ball with his body, has 1 hand on the ball and ………..drops it. Game over.

Wow! A crazy game in general, we lost after being up by 24. Look at the points scored by quarter! Just looking at the yardage total we dominated the game but made bigger mistakes. A missed field goal by Folk and Bettis inching across the goal line for 2 didn’t seem like big plays at the time and turned into game changers. Sweetney couldn’t get it going on the ground and he and Floyd had key fumbles. My secondary blew assignments on mastered plays allowing long touchdowns to the Steelers. I went from planning a new franchise as this one seemed too easy to my jaw agape as I’ve never lost being up more than 20 before (well 90% sure I haven’t).

Rambis was great he was 23/40 for 405 but had 9!!!!!!! Drops. Sweetney had his moments, but couldn’t break a long run and had two costly fumbles. Jolly was huge, 2 TDs and 154 yards receiving, maybe he’ll break out this year.

On defense I was killed in the slot and Verner had a really tough game against Hines Ward.

A really tough loss, but at least the game was fun.

                                Game Notes

The Bills have finished 11-5 in each of the first 2 seasons. They made the divisional round year 1 and faced us in the Conference Championship game last year. I am 2-3 against them all time. The Bills beat New England in the first week of the season.

Buffalo’s personal hasn’t changed very much through the franchise. They have traded out of both first rounds which bodes well for the team considering the talent in the Sweetney path comes later on. Offensively the change in the lineup is an upgrade. The Bills were part of my 3 team deal that sent TO to Miami, Mike Wallace to Buffalo and CJ Spiller to the Jets. Wallace complements Andre Reed nicely providing more of a deep threat than Stevie Johnson and is much better WR than CJ Spiller. The Bills use the old Eagles offense which makes Thurman Thomas a real threat out of the backfield.

On defense the Bills have made some minor tweaks to their 4-3 heavy blitz attack. They’ve moved Manny Lawson from LOLB to LE, Schoebel becomes a super sub on the line, Cornelius Bennett moves from MLB to OLB and Kiko Alonso is inserted into the starting lineup. I feel this makes the Bills a lot better defensively as they are more versatile and will have better coverage from the LB spots. I have been disappointed in Bruce Smith as thus far he has not recorded a sack against me.

I am glad I am playing a familiar foe in Week 2. The last game was so topsy-turvy it was hard to gauge whether I’ve found the perfect zone for difficulty level. Buffalo should be a harder match this time around given that they’ve improved coverage from their LBs. In the past I have been fairly successful attacking their D using our Slot Receivers to expose their big LBs in coverage.

                                Bills win the toss

Very first play Kelly to Thomas on swing route, Adalius Thomas crushes Thurman Thomas, forces fumble, recovers and turns it into 6 points.

Bills drove to NYJ 2, We stuffed Thomas twice and on 3rd down Kelly threw a pick while rushed up the middle. Landry gets 1st INT of the season.

We drive 93 yards culminating in a PA pass to Jolly for a 16 yard TD.

Our defense makes another goal line stand. Bills have to settle for a 22 yard field goal.

Kelly is lethal during 2 minute drill, Wallace catches a 2 yard slant with 24 seconds left in the half.

We go into the locker room up 4.

Teams traded a couple of drives without any scoring. We go 81 yards for a TD. Spiller gets the touch near the goaline against his former team.

Buffalo goes 3 and out and we take control of the game. 8 plays, all runs, for 54 yards. Spiller grabs his 2nd TD from 1 yard out. Sweetney fantasy owners would be irate, Spiller vultures a couple of 1 yard TD runs a week after Jolly did.

Bills too little too late, Kelly finds Reed from 14. 2 Pt failed on Toss to Thomas.

Bills onside attempt travels out of bounds with 3:49 left.

Sweetney fumbles for the 3rd time in 2 games while trying to run the clock out.

Kelly makes hailmary attempt on 4th and 14, Rhodes makes his 2nd INT in 2 games.

This was actually a pretty close game and it would have showed more if Buffalo didn’t blow their first offensive play and have their next drive end in a turnover at the NYJ 7. Our offense struggled to find its rhythm through the air and outside of 1 drive we struggled to run as well.

I made a few of signings after the game. CB OJ McClintock was the #6 overall pick in the ’09 draft and Green Bay let him go after just 1 season. CB Braylon Bowe-Drew was also a first rounder, selected #31 by the Colts.Tyrann Mathieu was also a FA. For some reason, my guess size, Arizona never liked him. I’ve continually seen them start inferior players. I had been looking for some help in the secondary as neither of my draft picks had panned out at CB. Pearson and Nalen were both released.
