    Breaking News:

Wide Receiver Bryant Johnson suffered a high-ankle sprain in last Sunday's loss to the Jaguars and will miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.

In addition, after a game on the roster that saw him pick up 4 tackles (1 for loss) in limited playing time, DE Lance Johnstone told Coach Billick he's done with football. "I'm just not myself anymore." he stated, adding "I had a great run, and I thank you and my teammates for giving me this opportunity; but I think I need to be home with my family, maybe look into coaching some day."

DT Sam Adams also told Coach Billick of his desire to be released, stating that he wanted a little more action since he, like Johnstone, is 35 years old and has been thinking about packing it in. "Bring in some young kid to develop, let me ride out my last few games in the NFL where they need me a little more."

Both men left on great terms and they will be missed.

(update: DT Sam Adams has signed with the Baltimore Ravens, where he will be the #2 DT behind Kelly Gregg. He got his wish...)

In corresponding moves, WR Peerless Price was signed and could start this weekend for the ailing Bryant Johnson. Coach Billick, in a statement to the media, expressed his desire to bring in a veteran receiver to fill the void created by Johnson's injury so there would be no disruption among the other receivers and their roles. As to why he didn't bring back Travis Taylor, a former draft pick of Billick who was on the Lions for a time this season, Coach Billick said, "We just couldn't make it happen. Travis is hoping for a full-time gig, whereas Peerless understands he's holding the spot for Bryant."

(Both Peerless and Travis are 30 years old, and definitely are hoping for one more NFL contract...)

Lastly, DE Dave Ball was signed to take the spot of Lance Johnstone. He's been a decent lineman and should fit in the rotation well. This will be his 4th team in 5 years, having spent a season in San Diego, two in New York with the Jets, and last season with the Panthers. He's got his work cut out for him, but he seems ready try to prove to one more team he belongs in the NFL. We'll see.

      WEEK TEN MILESTONES:
      MAKING THEIR MARK ON HISTORY

(DUE TO TIME CONSTRAINTS, I WILL HAVE TO GO TO A MORE QUICK SUMMARY IN THIS SECTION SO I CAN CATCH UP FASTER. I'M ALSO TOYING WITH A NEW FORMAT FOR THIS SECTION, WHICH, WHILE IT IS ONE OF THE MOST FUN FOR ME, IS ALSO TIME-CONSUMING AS HECK)

      tim brown.jpg

Marvin Harrison has passed Tim Brown for 3rd most receptions all-time.

Tom Brady passed John Brodie for 20th most touchdown passes all-time

Edgerrin James passed Marshall Faulk and Jim Brown for 8th most rushing yards all time. He also passed Corey Dillon and Jim Taylor for 15th most rushing touchdowns all-time.

Ty Law passed Deion Sanders and moved into a tie for 19th most interceptions all time.

And lastly our "shout out" goes to punter Jeff Feagles, who extended his own record and passed the 1600 punt mark. He now has 1602, which is 201 more than the next person, Sean Landetta, who retired with 1401 punts! Insane!

          Lions at Panthers preview:

The Detroit Lions, with a record of 5-4, find themselves at a crossroads yet again. One game up on the division lead, they let a golden opportunity slip away against a wounded team. It shows that two teams at opposite ends of their division are much closer than you'd think; although being 5-3, Jacksonville was hardly a "cellar dwelling" automatic win.

Now, at 5-4, the Lions are tied for first with the Packers, and once again face a division cellar dweller: The 2-7 Carolina Panthers. This time, however, the records of each team would appear to give Detroit an advantage.

Carolina, led by Jake Delhomme, are a shell of the team that went to the Super Bowl several years ago. Both leaders of the team, Delhomme on offense and Julius Peppers on defense, are in the last year of their contracts, and are getting older; potential victims of the dreaded "Team Rebuild".

Normally the wideouts would be 3-time Pro Bowler Steve Smith and 10,000 yard man Muhsin Muhammad, but Muhammad is injured so rookie Earl Bennett will start, and 2nd year man Dwayne Jarrett with be the 3rd wideout. Rookie Dorien Bryant is the 4th stringer there.

On defense, two rookies start opposite stalwarts Peppers and Kemeoatu: DE Buddy Jackson (injured, replaced by Stanley McClover) and DT Hank Smithers. Rookie Lionel Dotson also gets a lot of time at DT in pass rushing situations.

As for the Lions, they are healthy except for Bryant's injury. Coach Billick had nothing but praise for Peerless Price, saying that the veteran wideout had done everything they hoped for and more; picking up the playbook and learning his role as expected for an experienced wideout. It's crucial he's able to get up to speed quickly, having been unemployed all season to this point. This will allow Garrett Wolfe and James Hardy to stay in their roles and hopefully keep the offense gelling. Since Peerless is a skilled receiver with over 400 receptions to his credit, Coach Billick seems pretty confident he made the right call.

          0111_large.jpg

Peerless Price made headlines after his 4-199-1td performance during Tennessee's victory for the National Championship after the 1998 season.

            Re: The Detroit Lions

So, I tried to get one more game in tonight before my super crazy week and concert next weekend. The game vs the Panthers was awesome - back and forth, some good excitement... The game was coming down to the wire:

Down 24-10, we drive down and Griese hits Sypniewski for 20 yards with 4 minutes left. We kick, stop them, drive down again but fail on 4th and inches from the goal line. Panthers take over but Ernie Sims tackles DeAngelo Williams in the end zone for a safety and it's 24-19... we take the free kick and start driving... it's 2nd and goal on the 12... 21 SECONDS LEFT!!! I called a quick slant and we broke the huddle...

            AND THE GAME FROZE.

            [insert 34 curses here]

            13.jpg

I don't know if I'll have the heart to go through it again, I might sim it... playing time is so limited for me anymore... well - we'll see how I feel after work tomorrow...

Special Teams Miscues Trigger Rare NFL Tie

I decided to sim this one after my heartbreaking game-freeze. Wouldn't you know it, the first sim ended in a tie. Perfectly fitting considering we'll never know if my last second heroics were going to end in victory or defeat. A combined 4 missed field goals is pretty ugly. From a standings perspective, being 5-4-1 could be good, could be bad... all I know is that if we don't string together a few victories soon, it's not going to matter...

                  Detroit vs Tampa Bay Preview

Detroit comes into the game still shaking their head after their tie game last week vs. Carolina. The teams each missed two field goal attempts, and the Lions gave up a safety as well... It certainly wasn't the statement game they were planning on.

The good news is the team came out of the game healthy, save for reserve linebacker Teddy Lehman. He's dealing with a sore quad but should only miss a few days. He won't make the trip to Tampa, however.

As for Tampa, they are rolling through the NFL with a 9-1 record, their defense is only giving up an astounding 7.4 points per game. The team boasts great depth too, as even with starting running back Michael Turner and starting wide receiver Joey Galloway out, they have had little trouble dispatching their opponents. Free agent defensive tackle Rod Coleman leads the defense with 8 sacks, and HOFer Derrick Brooks is still an effective player and field general for the Bucs vaunted Tampa-2 defense.

The key for the Lions is the offensive line - those big guys up front need to open holes for powerhouse back Shaun Alexander, but also give Brian Griese enough time to find some holes in the Bucs zone coverage. Griese definitely wants this game, as he played for Tampa in 2004-2005. He won't label this a revenge game though, saying, "That's ancient history, no doubt. This is about the Lions catching up to the Packers, not about any one player. Trust me, that's all I'm focused on."

                    11.jpg

                    Close but no cigar...

Detroit prepared to host the NFC-Leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday still trying to figure out how it was going to handle the top team in the conference when they could only muster a tie against one of the worst.

Coach Billick had the team pumped up for the game, however, and the Lions traded shots with the Bucs quarter after quarter. Despite a missed field goal and a fumble close to the goal line, Detroit was up at halftime, and again in the 4th quarter until the unbelievable Tampa defense stepped up and took over, intercepting Brian Griese as he drove the Lions to the Tampa 27 with 40 seconds left in the game.

While the team is reeling now at 5-5-1 after a couple losses and a tie; there was much good that came out of the game, including scoring 20 points on a defense that was only allowing 7.4 per game. Now, if the team could just cut out the simple mistakes and turnovers, perhaps a winning streak could turn the season around. With several tough games coming up, however, the window of opportunity is closing fast.

                      WEEK TWELVE MILESTONES:
                      MAKING THEIR MARK ON HISTORY

                      drew-bledsoe.jpeg

Peyton Manning has passed Drew Bledsoe for 7th most passing yards all-time. He now has 44,794.

Hines Ward has passed Marshall Faulk for 23rd most receptions all-time with 770 receptions.

Randy Moss has passed Larry Centers for 15th most receptions all-time. He now has 834.

A special shout out to Marvin Harrison as he becomes only the 2nd person in the history of the NFL to record over 15,000 receiving yards! He has 15,077 yards to date. (He still needs another 7,818 yards to tie #1, Jerry Rice. At his current rate he needs another 97 games, a game into a 7th additional season... Marvin would be just around 44 years old!)

                        2008 THANKSGIVING PREVIEW!!!

Detroit, winless in it's last three games, prepares to face another division leading team this Thanskgiving when the 9-2 Titans head on down to Mo-Town.

Tennessee, led by the decorated and dangerous Vince Young, appear ready to challenge for the AFC Crown after they added two older, but all-pro, veterans: Warrick Dunn and Isaac Bruce. Adding the veteran presence to the young, budding stars such as LenDale White and rookie Limas Sweed appears to have given the Titans the right balance, something they need as they try to wrest the division away from the Colts.

Both teams are pretty healthy, which is a surprise this late into the season. The Titans will be without starting center Kevin Mawae and starting strong safety Calvin Lowry, but have capable backups in place.

The Lions are going to hold reserve linebacker Teddy Lehman out one more game, and Peerless Price is holding the spot of Bryant Johnson pretty well.

The Lions are always dangerous on Thanksgiving Day, and have busted out the classic Silvers for this crucial matchup...

There was little cause for thanks Thursday as Lions fans endured another last minute loss as the Titans were able to come back and defeat the luckless Lions.

Detroit played well up until the last minute of the game, when, leading 24-20, the Lions were unable to stop Vince Young and the Titans from charging up the field without so much as a hiccup, culminating with a touchdown pass to rookie tight end Gary Barnidge with under a minute to go. The Lions ran out of time as they tried to drive down the field for at least the tying field goal.

Quarterback Brian Griese played reasonably well, although he didn't get much help from his receivers as they dropped several passes throughout the game. Rookie running back Ryan Torain got a permanent trip to the bench after fumbling at the 10 yard line when he came in for a gassed Shaun Alexander. (who had just ripped off a 60 yard run.)

As for the Titans, they were held mostly in check until the final few minutes of the game. Vince Young had 50 of his rushing yards on the last 2 drives, even with the Lions playing with a QB Spy both drives - Vince's athleticism got him out of more than one tackle either by strength or speed.

Injuries hit both sides, as the Titans lost running back Warrick Dunn after his first carry; and the Lions lost LG Edwin Mulitalo in the 2nd quarter, DT Shaun Cody in the 3rd, and DT Carlton Powell in the 4th! Reserve DE Dave Ball ended up finishing the game at DT...

Now the Lions, at 5-6-1 are in real danger of missing the postseason. A wildcard seems like a longshot, and they need help to catch the Packers now, even though there's still a quarter of the season to go.
Rumors are swirling that maybe a change is needed...

                            WEEK THIRTEEN MILESTONES:
                            MAKING THEIR MARK ON HISTORY

Normally a receiver making his first catch all season during his team's 12th game doesn't make so much as a ripple, but in this case it was cause for a celebration of sorts. Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Eric Moulds had one catch for 14 yards, and this catch gave him 10,009 yards for his career, a milestone he desperately wanted.

Shaun Alexander passed Warrick Dunn and Ricky Watters for 19th place all-time in rushing yards.

Isaac Bruce passed Andre Reed for 10th most receiving touchdowns, moving into a tie for 9th place with the legendary Don Maynard.

Finally, our SHOUT OUT goes to 38 year old quarterback Trent Green as he passed 30,000 yards this weekend! Check out the picture below of Trent during his college days at Indiana!

                              Detroit vs Minnesota Preview

Sunday will be the second meeting of these two teams this season, the last being a dominant Viking victory. Brian Griese went down on the first drive, and Drew Stanton was terrible, to put it mildly. The defense kept it close, but a 4th quarter pick-six made sure the Lions weren't coming back.

The Lions, at 5-6-1, are close to losing their season. The only silver lining is that the Packers have lost 2 in a row, leaving them at 6-6. The Vikings, at 4-8, aren't out of the running either, although having to go most of the year without Adrian Peterson and Sidney Rice has really hurt the team.

Each week feels like a must-win for the Lions, and the fans are starting to clamor for Byron Leftwich to take over before it's too late. Critics point out that Griese is 1-3-1 in his last five starts; but he's played pretty well overall. The defense came together as a unit to take the blame for last week's loss; although Coach Billick was more diplomatic - adding that there were a few miscues that hurt the team as well. (Ryan Torain's fumble, for example.)

So, like they've said for the last several weeks, it's time to step up and play like LIONS! Time to beat the Vikings and take this division back!

(in addition, DC Joe Parry took Performance 2 (max rank), he is now a 33. Now both my coordinators are 33's LOL!)

                                VICTORY!!

The first time the Vikings faced the Lions, both sides had plenty of adversity in their young season to overcome - first and foremost were numerous injuries to key starters. The Vikings were without Adrian Peterson and Sidney Rice, and the Lions lost starting QB Brian Griese in the first series. The Vikings, however, rose to the occasion and thoroughly dominated the Lions 24-7.

In that first meeting, after losing Griese, Drew Stanton took over and he predictably collapsed. This time, Brian Griese made it through the entire game, and the Lions were able to keep enough of a passing game going this time to control the game.

The real hero of the game, however, was rookie CB Dominique Cromartie, who made 2 second half interceptions. His first was returned 89 yards for a score, and the second was on the Vikings last drive as they tried desperately to mount a comeback.

With the win, the Lions get back to .500, and with a matchup against the Indianapolis Colts coming up, this win couldn't have come at a better time. As for the Vikings, 4-9 pretty much ends their season, although they aren't mathematically out of their division race.
