    Boston Red Sox (MVP 2005)

Time for me to start my Dynasty now that I have a website created for it.

    Dynasty Site: http://home.comcast.net/~camulos/MVP/

    Just to give some information:

    - I will be playing 1 game every time through the rotation, using a different starter each time.

    - Every page, other than the front page, was created using mvpsavreader, created by RichK, found here. (thanks to experiment63 for his post on how to get this stuff online)

    - I will be writing an article for each game I play, along with some misc. articles throughout the season. I will post all the articles here as well as on my site.

    - Unfortunately due to time and space limitations I can't include the player pages for every team. I may decide to include them for the AL East and the Red Sox top prospects, but at this point I just have the 25 man roster.

    - Questions, comments, suggestions and trash talking are welcome.

          2005 Red Sox Preview

          4/1/2005

BOSTON -- The 2005 Red Sox return much of the core from their World Series team, but the new faces will be the key to their chances of a repeat.

          Lineup
The Red Sox lineup, which has led the AL in runs for the past two years, remains the strength of the team. The addition of Edgar Renteria should provide some added firepower out of the number two slot. The lineup includes 2 MVP candidates in Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, who combined for 84 HR's and 269 RBI's in 2004. Every player in the lineup has had an OBP over .370 in their career, a statistic the Red Sox front office covets. The projected lineup is Johnny Damon in center, Renteria at SS, Ortiz as the DH, Ramirez in LF, Trot Nixon in RF, Varitek behind the plate, Millar at 1B, Mueller at 3B and Bellhorn at 2B.

          Bench
The Red Sox have a lot of new faces coming off the bench. Gone are Dave Roberts, Gabe Kapler, Doug Mientkiewicz and Pokey Reese. They will be replaced by Jay Payton and infielder Ramon Vazquez. Kevin Youkilis remains the backup 3B and will also see time at 1B. Doug Mirabelli, one of the most reliable backup catchers in baseball, returns to catch knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

          Rotation
The starting rotation is the Red Sox biggest question mark. Gone are Pedro Martinez and Derek Lowe, replaced by David Wells, Matt Clement and Wade Miller. The rotation to begin the season will be Curt Schilling, David Wells, Matt Clement, Wade Miller and Tim Wakefield. Both Schilling and Miller are coming off injuries in 2004. Bronson Arroyo and John Halama, who will both start the year in the bullpen, provide depth.

          Bullpen
The Red Sox bullpen is anchored by closer Keith Foulke along with hard throwing setup men, Mike Timlin and Alan Embree. Arroyo and Halama will be used in long relief situations, while injury prone Matt Mantei remains the wildcard. When healthy, he can be a dominating reliever, but his injuries limited him to only 12 games last year. Left handed specialist, Mike Myers, completes the group.

NEW YORK - The Boston Red Sox picked up where they left off against the New York Yankees, defeating them 5-4, on the strength of a Kevin Millar home run, in the season opener. The Red Sox ended the Yankees 2004 campaign, rallying from an 0-3 defecit in the ALCS to complete one of the greatest comebacks ever, en route to their first World Championship in 86 years.

Kevin Millar watches his homerun in the eighth inning.

The game featured a matchup of former Arizona teammates, Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. Schilling went 7 2/3 innings, allowing 6 hits and 3 runs while striking out 3. Johnson was forced to leave in the 2nd after being struck in the leg by a Johnny Damon line drive. X-Rays after the game revealed a fracture meaning the Yankees ace will be headed to the DL just 20 pitches into the season. Johnson allowed 2 Runs and 5 hits in his short outing.

Varitek doubled in the 1st to score Edgar Renteria and Manny Ramirez. The Red Sox had a chance for more after a Kevin Millar single but Varitek was thrown out at the plate on a perfect throw from Yankee centerfielder Hideki Matsui.

The Red Sox scored again in the 6th but the Yankees answered with solo homeruns from Matsui and Bernie Williams in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.

Millar gave the Red Sox the lead for good in the 8th with a towering 2 run homerun over the 408 marker in center. Sturtze left after allowing Varitek to reach on a single, giving way to Tom Gordon, who allowed the blast by Millar on a first pitch fastball.

Red Sox closer Keith Foulke had some trouble in the 9th, allowing the Yankees to load the bases with no outs. He was able to work himself out of the jam, retiring Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez on ground outs, after a Tony Womack sacrifice fly.

BOSTON - The Red Sox lost their first game since Game 3 of the 2004 ALCS in their home opener vs the New York Yankees. After starting 2005 with a 6-0 road trip, the Red Sox were shutout by the Yankees, 5-0.

Carl Pavano shuts out the Red Sox
The Red Sox offense only managed 2 hits against Yankees starter Carl Pavano, who they had beaten in Yankee stadium last week. Pavano was dominant, only allowing 3 base runners in 9 innings while notching the Yankees first complete game of the season.

The Yankees offense was powered by 3 homeruns, including back-to-back homeruns from Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada in the 4th off Red Sox starter, David Wells. Gary Sheffield added a solo homerun in the 8th. Wells went 6 1/3 innings sllowing 7 hits and 4 runs against his former team. He

The Yankees recorded just their 2nd win of the season and are in last place in the AL East. The teams have an off day tomorrow and resume the 3 game series on Wednesday.

Red Sox second baseman Mark Bellhorn was injured in the 6th and diagnosed after the game with a minor PCL sprain. He is listed as day-to-day but could miss 2 weeks. The Red Sox will decide today if he will need to go on the DL.

Vernon Wells after hitting a homerun
BOSTON - The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Red Sox on the strength of their pitching staff, who were able to quiet the explosive Red Sox offense.

Starter David Bush baffled the Red Sox with a variety of off-speed pitches, striking out 7 in 6 innings and never letting Boston's offense get comfortable at the plate. The Red Sox worked the counts early but were unable to get the key hits, striking out 10 times and only walking twice.

Toronto scored their 3 runs on a pair of sacrifice flies and a solo homerun from CF Vernon Wells. Red Sox starter, Matt Clement, pitched well over 7 innings, allowing the 3 runs on 6 hits with 7 strikeouts.

Boston threatened in the 9th after David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez reached safely. Both moved up a base on a slow ground ball to the right side by Trot Nixon, putting the tieing run in scoring position. Jason Varitek drove in Ramirez and advanced pinch runner, Jay Payton, to third on a long fly ball to RF, which was caught just in front of Pesky's pole. However, recently promoted 1B John Olerud struck out swinging to give Miguel Batista his 3rd save of the season and leaving the tieing run stranded on third.

Arroyo pitched a perfect game to defeat the Devil Rays

TAMPA - Bronson Arroyo pitched his second career perfect game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Devils Rays 5-0.

Arroyo's first perfect game came as a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox in 2003, but this one was much more satisfying. He cruised through most of the game, needing only 101 pitches, but in the end was helped out by the defense behind him.

After getting the first out in the 9th, Arroyo was helped by two spectacular plays by Red Sox outfielders Trot Nixon and Manny Ramirez. Nixon recorded the second out on a sliding catch of a blooper by pinch hitter, Carl Crawford. For the final out, Ramirez made a spectacular diving catch of an Alex Sanchez line drive in left center. Arroyo finished with 6 strikeouts.

Edgar Renteria gave the Red Sox the lead in the first, with a solo homerun which would be all the run support Arroyo needed. Bill Mueller added a 3 run homerun in the 6th to provide some insurance for the Red Sox.

Arroyo started in place of the struggling Tim Wakefield who was demoted to the bullpen. Wakefield has allowed 19 earned runs and 5 homeruns in just 14.2 innings pitched. opposing teams have hit nearly .400 against him.

Yup, my first one in god knows how many games played.

I think the best I had done previous to this was carry a no-hitter into the 6th. I never thought I'd throw a no-hitter. The announcers kept saying "he still has the no-hitter" after the 6th, 7th and 8th. I was screaming at them for jinxing me.
