Reds Get it Dunn Against Cubbies
        The Cincinnati Post

The Reds stayed in Ohio to take on divisional foes, the Cubs, in a short two-game series. The two NL Central teams split the series, both winning a game apiece. This outcome, however, was misleading, as it was obvious who the superior offensive team was during the series; Cincinatti. The Reds racked up 24 hits in the two games, 7 by Adam Dunn alone. The hard-hitting leftfielder had two homers in the series as well, and was retired by the Cubs pitching staff only once in his eight at bats. After playing well against the Cubs, Cincinnati currently stands at 8-5.

Adam Dunn was 7-8 against Chicago

        Game One - Cincinnati 3, Chicago 6 (10 Innings)
        WP: Billy Koch (1-0)
        LP: Ryan Wagner (1-1)
        S: Ryan Dempster (2)
        HR: F. Lopez (1), Dunn (3), Ramirez (2)
Player of the Game: Adam Dunn - 3-4, HR

        Pitching Stats
        Aaron Harang (CIN) - 9 IP, 6 K, 7 H, 3 ER
        Mark Prior (CHC) - 7 IP, 8 H, 3 ER
        Ryan Wagner (CIN) - IP, K, 4 H, 3 R

        Hitting Stats
Adam Dunn (CIN) - 3-4, HR
Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 1-2, HR, SB (6), Walk
Aramis Ramirez (CHC) - 2-5, HR, 3 RBI

With Mark Prior on the mound, it was surprising to most to see the Cubs fall behind in the early innings. The Reds were leading 3-1 after four complete, and the score was knotted there until the ninth. Then, the Cubs' bats finally started hitting Cincinnati pitcher Aaron Harang. Chicago scored two runs in the top half of the ninth inning, and held the Reds in the bottom of the frame, sending the game into extra innings. Continuing their hot hitting, the Cubs scored three more in the 10th off of Reds' reliever Ryan Wagner, giving them the 6-3 victory.

        Game Two - Cincinnati 7, Chicago 1
        WP: Ramon Ortiz (2-1)
        LP: Jerome Williams (0-2)
        HR: Dunn (4)
Player of the Game: Adam Dunn - 4-4, HR, 2 RBI

        Pitching Stats
        Ramon Ortiz (CIN) - 6 IP, 5 K, 3 H, ER
        Jerome Williams (CHC) - 5.2 IP, 3 K, 11 H, 7 ER

        Hitting Stats
Adam Dunn (CIN) - 4-4, HR, 2 RBI
        Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 2-5, 2B, RBI
Jerry Hairston Jr. (CHC) - 2-4, RBI, 3 SB (4)

Not much can be said about this game, other than the Reds' bats dominated Jerome Williams and the Chicago Cubs. Adam Dunn continued on his tear, going 4-4 with a homerun in the contest. Aside from Jerry Hairston, the Cubs played very dull baseball, and lost to Cincinnati by the score of 7-1.

Player of the Series (Offense): Adam Dunn (CIN) - 7-8, 2 HR, 3 RBI
        Player of the Series (Pitching): Aaron Harang (CIN) - 9 IP, 6 K, 7 H, 3 ER
        Next Series: Pittsburgh Pirates

            Pirates Walk Plank in Cincinnati
            The Cincinnati Post

Coming off a big offensive series against Chicago, the Reds started right where they left off when the Pirates came to town. Leading the charge for Cincinnati was leadoff man Felipe Lopez, who was a combined 6-9 in the two-game series. The 24-year-old shortstop was 5-5 in game one alone, hitting a homerun and stealing three bases as well. Although Oliver Perez gave the Reds fits in game two, the hometown team was able to pull off the sweep, and improve their record to 10-5.

Felipe Lopez was 5-5 in Game One

            Game One - Cincinnati 10, Pittsburgh 3
            WP: Luke Hudson (2-0)
            LP: Sean Burnett (0-2)
            HR: F. Lopez (2), Dunn (5), LaRue (2), Bay (2), J. Castillo (6)
Player of the Game: Felipe Lopez - 5-5, HR, 3 RBI, 3 SB (9)

            Pitching Stats
            Luke Hudson (CIN) - 7 IP, K, 5 H, 2 ER
            Sean Burnett (PIT) - 2 IP, K, 5 H, 5 ER
            Ben Weber (CIN) - 2 IP, 2 H, ER

            Hitting Stats
            Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 5-5, HR, 3 RBI, 3 SB (9)
            Jason LaRue (CIN) - 3-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI
Jose Castillo (PIT) - 2-3, HR

Cincinnati got to Pirates' starter Sean Burnett early and often, knocking him around for five runs in just two innings of work. Felipe Lopez had his best game as a professional, recording five hits, including a homerun, and stealing three bases in the 10-3 Cincinnati victory. Luke Hudson pitched well for the Reds, going seven innings, scattering five hits and giving up just two runs.

            Game Two - Cincinnati 7, Pittsburgh 3
            WP: Brandon Claussen (2-0)
            LP: Oliver Perez (0-2)
            HR: L. Lopez (1), Aurilia (1)
            Player of the Game: Joe Randa - 3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI

            Pitching Stats
            Brandon Claussen (CIN) - 7 IP, 3 K, 10 H, 2 ER
            Oliver Perez (PIT) - 7 IP, 3 K, 8 H, 6 ER

            Hitting Stats
            Joe Randa (CIN) - 3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI
            Rich Aurilia (CIN) - 1-1, Pinch-Hit HR, 3 RBI
            Jose Castillo (PIT) - 3-5, 3B, RBI, SB (1)

This game, unlike the last, was actually close from the start. Pittsburgh's ace, Oliver Perez, confused the hell out of the Cincinnati hitters, inducing numerous weak ground balls and infield popups in his seven innings of work. However, later in the game, Perez definitely showed signs of fatigue with the score 3-2 in the Reds' favor. Rich Aurilia entered the game as a pinch-hitter, and on the first pitch he saw, took Perez deep for the three-run homerun, giving Cincinnati a bigger cushion than they would need. The Reds went on to win easily, 7-3.

Player of the Series (Offense): Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 6-9, 3B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 SB
Player of the Series (Pitching): Luke Hudson (CIN) - 7 IP, K, 5 H, 2 ER
            Next Series: @ Florida Marlins

                  Marlins Win Offensive-Minded Series
                  The Cincinnati Post

Against the Marlins, the Reds consistantly put runs up on the board, no matter who was on the mound. Cincinnati recorded a jaw-dropping number of 48 hits in the three-games against Florida, but managed to win only one of the contests. Game one was, by far, the most dynamic the Reds' bats have looked all season, as they put 17 runs on the board behind 22 hits. Eric Milton continued his hot pitching for Cincy, throwing a one-hitter against the Fish in the first game. Although they hit well, Cincinnati dropped two of the three games in Florida, putting their overall record at 11-7.

Miguel Cabrera tore apart the Cincinnati pitching staff

                  Game One - Cincinnati 17, Florida 0
                  WP: Eric Milton (3-0)
                  LP: Dontrelle Willis (0-2)
                  HR: F. Lopez (3), L. Lopez (2,3), Casey (3,4), Dunn (6), Griffey Jr. (3), Randa (1,2)
                  Player of the Game: Sean Casey - 5-6, 2 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI

                  Pitching Stats
                  Eric Milton (CIN) - CG SHO, 11 K, H
                  Dontrelle Willis (FLA) - 2.2 IP, 2 K, 7 H, 7 ER

                  Hitting Stats
                  Luis Lopez (CIN) - 4-6, 2B, 2 HR, 3 RBI
                  Joe Randa (CIN) - 3-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI
                  Miguel Cabrera (FLA) - 1-3, 2B

Not much really needs to be said about this one, as the Reds' lineup was simply unstoppable. Hitting a total of nine homeruns in the ballgame, the Florida pitching staff had no answer for what Cincinnati was doing offensively. Eric Milton was, again, dazzling on the mound, throwing a one-hitter and striking out 11 in the game. Miguel Cabrera came up with the Marlins' single hit, a double into left-center, but Florida needed just a few more to overcome the 17 run lead the Reds had built up.

                  Game Two - Cincinnati 5, Florida 7
                  WP: AJ Burnett (2-2)
                  LP: Aaron Harang (0-2)
                  S: John Riedling (6)
                  HR: Jimenez (1), Pierre (2), Cabrera (5)
Player of the Game: Miguel Cabrera - 2-4, 3B, HR

                  Pitching Stats
                  Aaron Harang (CIN) - 5.2 IP, 3 K, 10 H, 7 ER
                  AJ Burnett (FLA) - 6 IP, 3 K, 10 H, 5 ER

                  Hitting Stats
                  D'Angelo Jimenez (CIN) - 3-5, HR, 3 RBI
Juan Pierre (FLA) - 2-4, HR
                  Damien Easley (FLA) - 2-4, 2 3B, 2 RBI

Neither teams' pitching really did much good in this game, as both starters gave up at least five earned runs. Cincinnati jumped out to an early lead off of Marlins' pitcher AJ Burnett behind the hot hitting of leadoff man Felipe Lopez (4-5), and D'Angelo Jimenez (3-5). However, later on in the game, the Fish showed they could stroke a little bit themselves. Florida leadoff man, Juan Pierre, went yack for the second time this season, and Miguel Cabrera was 2-4 with a triple and a homerun. Closer John Riedling came on to finish off the Reds in the ninth inning, preserving the 7-5 Florida victory.

                  Game Three - Cincinnati 5, Florida 6
WP: Valerio De Los Santos (3-0)
                  LP: Matt Belisle (0-1)
                  S: John Riedling (7)
                  HR: F. Lopez (4,5), Dunn (7), Sanchez (1,2)
Player of the Game: Freddy Sanchez - 4-4, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI

                  Pitching Stats
                  Ramon Ortiz (CIN) - 5.1 IP, 6 K, 11 H, 4 ER
                  Al Leiter (FLA) - 6 IP, 3 K, 10 H, 3 ER
                  Matt Belisle (CIN) - 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER

                  Hitting Stats
                  Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 5-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, SB (13)
                  Miguel Cabrera (FLA) - 3-4, 2 3B
                  Freddy Sanchez (FLA) - 4-4, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI

The hot hitting of this series continued on in game three, as the Reds and Marlins combined for 28 hits. Five of those hits came from Cincinnati shortstop Felipe Lopez, who was 5-5 on the game with a pair of homeruns. Going into the final innings of the ballgame, the runs earned by Lopez and the Reds looked as if they would be enough. However, with Miguel Cabrera and utility-man Freddy Sanchez coming to the plate, Cincinnati learned not to take any lead for granted. Cabrera tripled in the gap in the bottom of the eighth, followed by the second homerun of the game by Sanchez, giving the Marlins the one run advantage. John Riedling notched his second save of the series, giving Florida the 6-5 win over the Reds.

                  Player(s) of the Series (Offense): Felipe Lopez (CIN) - 11-16, 3 HR, 3 SB / Miguel Cabrera (FLA) - 6-11, 2B, 3 3B, HR

Felipe Lopez has definitely been the catalyst of my offense thus far. He's among the league leaders in average (how he isn't leading the majors in hitting, I don't know), and leads the MLB in stolen bases. I've been very pleasantly surprised by his power numbers so far, hopefully he can keep it up.

                          Reds Keep Hitting & Winning
                          The Cincinnati Post

The Reds traveled back north to Chicago to take on the Cubbies, and eventually won two out of three games against their NL Central opponents. Different people got the job done for Cincinnati on different nights, as pitcher Luke Hudson was the difference in game one of the series, and Sean Casey exploded for three homeruns the very next night to give the Reds the win. Pitching wasn't necessarily the best thing going in this series, as the Reds and Cubs combined for 33 hits in game two alone. Not much else needs to be said about these three games, other than the series-win puts the Reds at 13-8 on the year.

Ken Griffey Jr. is all smiles after the series in Chicago

                          Nomar Garciaparra (CHC) - 2-4, HR, 2 SB (3)

From a very early stage, it was apparent that Cincinnati wanted to win more than the Cubs. Chicago came out very flat in the early going, striking out numerous times at the plate and allowing the Reds' offense to do what it wanted. Although Chicago clamped down later on in the game, it just wasn't enough, as Cincy rolled to the easy 6-1 victory.

                          Game Two - Cincinnati 13, Chicago 4

Even moreso than the previous ballgame, the Cubs came out without the focused attitude needed to win at the major league level. The Reds were able to jump out to a big and early lead on the Cubbies, led by first baseman Sean Casey's three homeruns and six RBI's. Ken Griffey Jr. was able to add two more dingers to his season total, and Adam Dunn chipped in with a homer of his own in the 13-4 Cincinnati win.

Unlike the two previous contests, which resulted in Chicago losses, the Cubs hit the field with a positive attitude. Greg Maddux was great on the mound from the very beginning, striking out five Reds' batters in his seven innings of work. After Cincinnati, somehow, jumped out to a 2-1 lead, Chicago rallied and put up a few runs of their own. Going into the top of the ninth inning, the Reds found themselves in a hole down 6-2. Cincinnati was able to muster up one run before three outs were recorded, but it just wasn't enough, as the Cubs took the series finale 6-3.

Going into the series in Milwaukee, the Reds had been tearing the cover off of the ball. Against the Brewers, the hot play continued for the Cincinnati batters, as they recorded at least 10 hits in each game of the series. Reds' shortstop Felipe Lopez, who has been playing outstanding baseball all year long, was 8-13 in Cincinnati's sweep of the Brewers, stealing three bases and hitting a homerun. On the defensive side of things, Ramon Ortiz had a fabulous outing in Game Two, recording the win and helping the Reds to their 16-8 season record.

The Reds came out of the gate fast in this ballgame, getting four straight hits to start things off. The Reds' second batter, and secondbaseman, Luis Lopez, had four hits of his own on the night, including a double off of the right field fence. Willy Mo Pena supplied the power for Cincinnati, hitting his third longball of the year in the Reds' 5-2 victory.

In a scoreless game, Milwaukee's rookie secondbaseman, Rickie Weeks, stepped to the plate with a man on. About 2 seconds later, he deposited a ball well into the leftfield bleachers, giving the Brew-Crew a 2-run lead. However, as the game wore on, the Reds battled and battled, and eventually built on a lead of their own. A Willy Mo Pena homerun put them ahead for good, despite numerous comeback attempts by the Brewers. Carlos Lee also homered for Milwaukee, but it was too little too late, as Cincinnati won 6-4.

In the series finale, the Brewers came out very flat; in the field and at the plate. The Reds simply drilled Milwaukee starter Wes Obermueller, lighting him up for eight earned runs in just 3+ innings of work. Cincinnati was able to tee off for four homeruns in the game, including one apiece by their 1 and 2 hitters, Lopez and Jimenez. Luke Hudson wasn't overly dominant, but was definitely effective on the mound for the Reds, pitching seven strong innings in the 10-4 Cincinnati victory.

The Cincinnati Reds have hit the ball extremely well through the first month of the season. As expected, the 3-6 hitters have produced plenty of power. Adam Dunn leads the Reds in homeruns though April, belting eight out of the ballpark in the month. Offensively, there is no question as to who the biggest surprise has been. Leadoff man Felipe Lopez has really served as a catalyst for the Cincinnati lineup, hitting nearly .500 in April and knocking five homeruns of his own. When the young shortstop has been on base, he doesn't hesitate to run either, stealing nineteen bases on the season. Obviously, offense has been what is carrying Cincinnati through the first month of the long season.

The Reds' pitching has surprised many people this season, winning a lot more ballgames than expected. However, at second glance, the numbers put up haven't been exactly amazing. For example, although Brandon Claussen is a perfect 3-0 on the season, his ERA is just above 6. No doubt about it, the dynamic Cincinnati offense has more than helped out their pitching staff, but there have been a few bright spots. Eric Milton has been sensational in his first season with the Reds, posting a 3-1 record in April. On three occasions this season, the lefthander has pitched nine shutout innings, allowing only a single hit in each of these outings. So, although the Cincy staff hasn't been magnificent as a whole, they have still been better than originally expected.
