Mets sweep Nats in three straight walk-off victories

QUEENS, NY--The Mets are taking this "close win" thing to an entirely new level.

The Mets thrilled their home fans vs. the Nationals, winning each game by one run, each time by scoring in the 9th inning, and twice off Nats' closer Chad Cordero.

The first game was a pitching duel that ended with Mike Piazza's sacrifice fly that scored Kaz Matsui, giving the Mets the 2-1 victory.

Things looked bleak for New York in the second game, but Cordero walked two and allowed the winning single from Cliff Floyd without even registering an out; 4-3 Mets win.

The Mets were paced by two home runs from Carlos Beltran and another from Piazza in the finale, but the Nats scored on Danny Graves in the 9th to take a 4-3 lead. Speed killed the Nationals though, as with two outs, Mike Cameron drove in the speedy Marlon Anderson from second to tie it, and two batters later, Jose Reyes drove in Cameron from second, and Cordero spiked his glove onto the ground as the Mets celebrated an improbable 5-4 win, and a 3 game sweep in which they outscored Washington 11-8.

The Mets are 13-6, and are already 5-3 in one-run games. They host their archrivals, the Braves, at Shea for a 3 game set. It is a crucial early season matchup, as the Mets lead the Braves by three games early on, and look to open up some distance. The second game of the series has oodles of promise, as Pedro Martinez will face Tim Hudson.

Mets' late inning heroics avert sweep vs. Braves

QUEENS, NY--The first game was a disgrace to the sport of baseball.

The second game spoiled a nice outing from Pedro Martinez.

The third game was just sad...until the late innings, that is.

The first game of the series between the Mets and the Braves got ugly in the middle three innings, as the Braves exploded against Steve Trachsel and the Mets' bullpen, throttling New York in front of their home crowd, 15-0.

In the second game, Pedro Martinez struck out five in 7.2 innings, while yielding a single run. But the Mets' offense had to rely on a 9th inning rally, and this time it fell short in a 3-2 loss.

Tom Glavine had another solid outing in the series finale, striking out 6 in 8 innings...and once again the offense had to rally, scoring one in the 8th and one in the 9th, before Mike Piazza drove in the winning run in the 11th in the 3-2 Mets' win.

Afterwards, Mets GM Brian Kudron voiced some minor concerns about the offense, saying he believes it's just in a funk, and he doesn't see any reason to make any moves just yet.

The Mets finally get a day off before heading to the nation's capital to take on the Nationals for three games at RFK Stadium.
