Return to Glory: A Navy Midshipmen Legacy

Ok, I will be starting my College Hoops 2k6 legacy with the Navy Midshipmen once it comes out, which should be (hopefully) in about a week. I will be doing my legacy on all american, 18 minute half length, and my own custon sliders for the most realistic game expirience. And, i am editing this because the PS2 release has been moved UP!!! It will be in stores in my area on friday so I can get this going this weekend (dec 2-5).

    A Coach Is Named

The decision was made today to hire former NBA head coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers. Rivers, who has previous NBA coaching expirience with Orlando and Boston, has compiled a career record of 221-205 and earned coach of the year honors in 2000. Coach Rivers was also offered jobs at 4 other schools including Indiana University, but turned them down to come to Navy because quote, "I couldnt help but be drawn in by the prestige of this place. I feel up to the task of bringing this program back to glory. Coach Rivers is expected to hold a press conference sometime this week.

Navy Hangs on for Dear Life, but Dies Late, 76-50

Seattle, Wa, Connoisseurs who gather to discuss the arts will often debate as to the qualities that separate masterpiece from the mundane. With the events of last nights basketball game at Bank of America Arena, a singualr truth to the debate was added indelibly to the testimony. "If you're looking for an aesthtic masterpiece, the sure bet is to head to your local museum, because our team's performance sure as hell wasnt it." Those words offered by Doc Rivers after the Midshipmen's dissmantling at the hands of UNC Greensboro.

This game was only close early in the first half, when the Midshipmen played well on defense and held off any scoring for 2 minutes of the game. From there, Kaleo Kina drove to the basket for a layup and foul, converted the 3 point play, 3-0 Navy. Thas when the good fortune ended, as Greensboro's David McClenny hit an uncommon 3 to spark an 8-0 run. After that, Navy had to play their hearts out just to keep a managable deficet. Late half points by Kina and Corey Johnson cut a 14 point leadt to 7 at half, 37-30.

The second half started pretty much the same way the first did, neither team being able to hit shots. As the half progressed, Greensboro had gotten out to a consistant 13 point lead, then the final 5 minutes, which would be the end of Navy. evin Boatner came off the bench and made things look promising, hitting 2 consecutive shots bringing the lead down to 9, and had a chance to close more as Greg Sprink, the nights rebound leader, grabbed a defensive board. But David Hooper, who had an uncharacterisitcly low 2 points, missed a 3, and the lead quickly blew up to 23 from there. The game eventualy ended up a 76-50 rout of our Navy Midshipmen

            Scoring Leaders
UNC Greensboro: Kevin Oleksiak - 23
Navy: Kaleo Kina/Corey Johnson - 11 (at least we spread the ball around, lmao)

            Rebounds
UNC Greensboro: Brian Beckford - 8
            Navy: Greg Sprink - 9

It Gets No Easier For Navy, 22 Point Loss to Favored Georgetown

The Midshipmen were unable to avenge last Friday's loss to UNC Greensboro against the highly favored Georgetown Hoyas. Coach Rivers said after the game, "we played a very good team and were not expected to win, but that doesnt mean we did'nt play our hearts out.

And that they did. It looked bad right from the start as Georgetown's Ashanti Cook drove through Navy's 1-1-2 defense and was fouled, and Navy was down 3-0 within 20 seconds. But Navy would play Georgetown tough for the first few minutes, never letting the Hoyas' lead get over 6, and Matt Fannin basket and Foul made the score a suprising 17-15 with about 9 minutes left in the half. But Turnovers were the problem in this game for Navy, as 2 late in the first half lead to a 3 pointer by Cook, and a 2 on 1 break and basket by Brandon Bowman. 43-28 at half.

The second half got no better, as missed shots lead to points on a struggling Navy defense. David Hooper did however rebound from his 2 point display on Friday with 19 points, including 3 three pointers that turned this game from an embarrassing loss to an understandable loss to a highly favored team. Sure this team is in rebuilding mode, but opening the season with 2 20+ point losses is not what Doc Rivers had in mind.

                Recruiting News

The Navy Midshipmen Have reportedly expressed interest in Devin Kinloch, a 6'4'' senior guard from New Rochelle in southern New York. Assistant coach Marqise Bridges has been scouting Kinloch for quite some time and feels he will work well with fellow guards Greg Sprink and David Hooper. They say Kinloch has told them he would like to stay close to home, which works out fairly well for the organization here in Maryland. Kinloch is projected at 52% interest in the Navy program.

                Other Interests
                Shaun Coombs G 6'7'' 212 lbs Junior College Freshman ***** 33& interest
                Rueben McCray F 6'10'' 210 lbs HS Junior ***** 38% interest
                Hal Flores C 6'11' 218 lbs HS Senior ***** 43% interest

The need of big guys will be fufilled if Navy can land McCray or Flores, and they say that they are both very athletic for their size. We will wait for reports on these kids and pass along their grades in each category.

Slopppy Second Half Leads to Heartbreaking 9 Point Loss

The story of the first two games may have been that they were facing significantly better teams, but Doc Rivers made it known that his players cannot use that as an excuse. "We just plain need to play better. Take better shots, more aggresive defense, ball control. We've had problems in all those areas" Rivers said in his midweek press conference. And it seemed that they had accomplished that. Seemed.

It started out looking good for Navy, as they took advantage of many opportunities that Arkansas Little Rock Trojans gave them, mainly fouls. Kaleo Kina came out on fire, hitting Navy's first 3 shots and giving Navy a 6-2 lead, amazingly the first lead the Midshipmen have had this young season. Shortly there after, David Hooper took a mid range jumpshot, drew a foul, and converted one of four 3 point plays in the first half. Again, Opportunities. Corey Johnson who has been outstanding off the bench converted another, giving Navy a 13-3 lead, 10:58. Arkansas LR would clean it up, and convert a 3 point play of their own, pulling within 3, 15-12 Navy. The Sloppy play that had hurt them in the first two games came back late in the first, including two consecutive turnovers, allowing Ark LR to close to 40-36 at halftime.

And the sloppyness continued into the second, and the Trojans took a 44-42 lead early. It would get worse, as Zack Wright hit a 3, putting LR ahead 51-48. Kaleo Kina, David Hooper and Corey Johnson were the 3 that kept Navy in this game, scoring 35 points between them. Hooper one of two threes to tie it back up, Kina making 2 free throws, and Johnson with 2 baskets in a row to pad the lead. In the End, the Midshipmen just couldnt stop Rahad Jones-Jennings on the inside and he would put them away on multiple turnovers. The Midshipmen let their first win slip away, 75-66.
