          Midnight Madness Recap

          Final Score:
          Columbia 61
          Columbia 70

This past Sunday was one of likely very few occasions that we'll be able to say that Columbia won this season, even if it was in the intrasquad "midnight madness" scrimmage.

And even this game wasn't pretty for the Lions. The starters barely squeaked by the second team by winning 70-61. Coaches often say that the score of Midnight Madness does not matter because they're just showcasing their new team to the fans for the new season, but when the starters are down nine points with less than two minutes to go, you know something is wrong.

Their were some bright spots from the game, however. The brightest spot coming from John Baumann, who earned his way into the starting lineup by posting 27 points and 8 rebounds for the second team. Baumann shot 11 for 14 from the field, and seemed unstoppable at times. Columbia can just hope he brings that kind of enthusiasm to the team on a daily basis.

Columbia now has three weeks to get the kinks out before opening the season against New Hampshire in the Cougar Classic.

Lions Rout New Hampshire in Cougar Classic

Final Score: New Hampshire 55, Columbia 72

Columbia came out shooting on Thursday, and didn't let up all night. The Lions shot 67 percent from the field and held New Hampshire to just 55 points as they advanced to the finals of the Cougar Classic.

Columbia jumped out to a big lead early, but New Hampshire clawed it's way back into it and would have led at the half hadn't it been for a Dalen Cuff three at the buzzer. That wouldn't be the last time Cuff made a big shot in this contest, however.

The momentum from the Cuff-three carried over to the second half, as the Lions opened the half on a 15-4 run and never looked back.

New Hampshire made an attempt to make it a game with under five minutes to go in the game when they cut the lead down to eight points. But after a Columbia timeout, Cuff took over.

The first possession after the timeout resulted in Cuff draining one behind the arc. UNH's next possession was ended when Cuff swiped the ball and dished it to Loscaizo for an easy lay-up. Cuff went on to then score the next five points for the Lions.

Columbia will face Quinnipiac on Friday in the Cougar Classic final.

Over taking Penn and Princeton is going to be a daunting task. Hope you're up to the challenge.

                Columbia Rolls On

                Quinnipiac 44, Columbia 77

From the tip-off on, everyone knew it was Columbia's night.

The first half was one of the most dominating performances in Columbia school history, as they began the game on a 31-4 run. The combination of Baumann and Kravic seemed unstoppable, and Quinnipiac couldn't buy a basket.

Quinnipiac entered halftime looking at a 43-13 deficit, but they showed no quit. In the second half, they cut the lead down into the teens at one point, and forced Columbia into making 10 second-half turnovers, but it wasn't enough. Columbia won the Cougar Classic with a convincing 77-44 victory.

The Lions go on the road next week for the first time this season as they visit Long Island who has yet to play this season. They will likely do so without sixth man Ben Nwachukwu. The big man dislocated his finger in Friday's game, and will likely be out 7-10 days.

Thanks, good to know people actually read these. That's why I stopped my NCAA Football one...

I'm a little worried about how good my team is playing so far, while both games were winnable, they probably shouldn't be 30 point blowouts. I'm hoping that it's just an abberation though because I don't wanna be messing with sliders too much.

Hot Shooting Continues As Lions Win Again

                    Columbia 85, Long Island 72

The Lions had their biggest challenge of the young season when they traveled to Long Island.

Much like their game against Quinnipiac, Columbia got off to a hot start. All their shots seemed to fall, while Long Island's just wouldn't fall. But unlike the Quinnipiac game, it wouldn't last this time.

Columbia entered halftime only up six points. They started off fast again in the second half, extending their lead all the way to 18 at one point. But then the sloppy Lions came back to form. They started forcing passes and shots, causing for quick possessions and turnovers and allowing Long Island back into the game. Long Island went on an 19-6 run to make it a six point game with three minutes left in the game.

But then backup guard Daniel Trepanier, who was seeing his first action of the season, his a clutch three from the corner which seemed to put the dagger in the heart of Long Island. Columbia held on to win the game 85-73.

Columbia will visit Stony Brook(0-2) on Saturday to attempt to become the first 4-0 Columbia team since the 1969-70 season.

Stony Brook Runs All Over Lions

                          Columbia 50, Stony Brook 59

Stony Brook dealt Columbia it's first loss of the season, while picking up it's own first victory.

The Sea Wolves went out front early and dominated most of the game. Their lead never exceeded nine points, but they only trailed for a couple minutes the entire game.

Stony Brook was stingy with the ball, forcing Columbia into nine turnovers while only committing four turnovers themselves. The Sea Wolves made the most of those turnovers as evident by the 20 fast break points scored, compared to Columbia's two.

While Stony Brook was stingy in keeping the ball away from Columbia, they were far from stingy as a team. Nine different Sea Wolves scored, none scoring more than 10 points. It was a true team effort.

SG Dalen Cuff led all scorers with 16 points for Columbia, while Kravic and Baumann each scored 11 apiece. However, with the game on the line down the stretch, Cuff and Kravic went a combined 0-5, negating any chance for a Lions comeback.

Columbia PG Brett Loscalzo was held scoreless tonight, after averaging 13 points per game during his first three games.

Columbia falls to 3-1 on the season, and has a few days off now before heading to Sacred Heart on Wednesday. Sacred Heart is 2-1 on the season.

                            Last-second Shot Buries Lions

                            Columbia 70, Sacred Heart 71

From start to finish, Sacred Heart center Kibwe Trim dominated Columbia's frontcourt en rout to a 71-70 victory.

Trim scored his team's first 12 points, and unstoppable the entire game. Columbia tried guarding him with five different players, but none of them succeeded. With 2.1 seconds left, Trim hit a fade away two to put away the Lions.

Trim had scored 26 points in the first half as Sacred Heart went into the locker room with a seven point lead. During the second half, however, Columbia double and even triple-teamed him hoping to slow him down and stop entry passes. It worked for the first 19 minutes and 58 seconds as Columbia was holding onto a small lead.

Columbia's Dragutin Kravic hit a big three with 54 seconds left to give Columbia a 70-69 lead. On the following possession, it looked as if Columbia had put the game away when Trim went up to put up a shot in the paint, only to have it blocked by Columbia center John Baumann.

However, Sacred Heart power forward Joey Henley grabbed the block, fed it back to Trim who hit the fade away two with 2.4 to go.

Trim finished the game with 34 points and six rebounds. Columbia's John Baumann(19 points, 11 rebounds) and Brett Loscalzo(13 points, 11 assists) each finished the game with double-doubles, but it wasn't enough.

Columbia, now 3-2, heads back home to face 2-2 Army on Friday.
