    Monks 2005/2006 Knicks season : Live 360

The season to date: We are 2 and 5. Acknowledged that this is not a good record. However, apart from one game, the team has been in every contest. We were 2 and 1 for the last 3 games and finding some good form.

The build up: I brought my Knicks to the Staple Center after a heartbreaking O/T loss in Utah.

After a slow start to the season, the team had started to play well together. I had made some alterations to the line up with Nate starting at the two-guard position alongside Marbs. Crawford had been playing well as a 6th man. I had got some good minutes off the bench from Qyntel Woods in the game at Utah, so I was looking to use him more this game. I don’t really have a ‘defensive stopper’, so I’ve been using Lee in that role. He’d been getting burned though…so Woods was getting a lot of his minutes. Overall, despite my 2 and 5 record, the team has been playing solid and “in” most games.

The challenge: Stopping Kobe. Before this game, I checked the stats and he was the top scorer in the league at 33 ppg.

LA’s record was also 2 and 5…so both teams were desperate.

The tactics: I decided to start with ¼ court man to man and double Kobe. Offensively, I wanted to get Marbury scoring early. He’s been averaging around 9 assists per game…but I figured I needed his offense more than anything this game.

The game: The players took the court…and I don’t know if there’s a better sight in basketball than the blue away jerseys of the Knicks up against the yellow home jerseys of the Lakers at the Staples Center. There’s just ‘something’ about Knicks v Laker games.

From the tip off…it was all LA.

Kobe scored the first 9 points…including a steal and breakaway dunk that got the crowd into the game early.

Marbury could get nothing going…so I went inside to my bigs.

Unfortunately, my entire front line had nights to forget.

The Lakers sat on a 10-15 point lead throughout almost the entire game. Kobe was just unstoppable. It was almost impossible to stay in front of him on D…he’d drive by my defenders and either pull up for 15 footer or drive to the hoop / get to the free throw line. When my double teams arrived in time…he was dishing out to Smush Parker and Lamar Odom who just killed me with uncontested J’s.

By games end the final score was Lakers 79 Knicks 59.

Yes…I was held to 59 points.

    A disgraceful effort.

My starters stats really paint the picture of what went wrong:

    Curry 2 points (1 from 8)
    Davis 6 points (3 from 9)
    Lee 6 points (3 from 6)
    Nate 6 (3 from 9)
    Marbs 21 and 9 (11/25 shooting though)

6th man: Crawford went 0 from 7 from 3-point land.

The only positive was Qyntel Woods off the bench playing some decent D and getting 5 and 5.

Just a brutal, brutal night overall though and one the team needs to forget quickly.

The Knicks now move on to Denver for the final game in this six game road trip…

Wow, good read Monk. Horrible game, but good read. It's tough to stop Kobe, I can tell you that much. That's what made me want to play as the Lakers, lol. Good luck in Denver.

      That was brutal.

I like how your stating some strategy in the write-ups also.

I could visualize the Knicks playing 1/4 court man on the Lakers

Re: Monks 2005/2006 Knicks season : Live 360

The build up: I brought my Knicks to the Pepsi Center after an absolute towelling in Los Angeles. We were 2 and 6 and the players’ minds were firmly on returning to MSG it seemed. I wanted them focussed on getting a win in Denver and nothing else.

The challenge: Stopping Denvers full court game…they get out and run at all times and have shot blockers that get it all started. Containing Melo also would be a challenge…

Nuggets record was 8 and 1 and they were atop the WC.

The tactics: I made a change here and started with a 3-2 zone / SF on top. I brought Qyntel Woods into the starting line up as a reward for two solid games and also because I wanted someone ‘athletic’ to guard Melo. I moved David Lee to PF and benched Davis. I decided to play K-Mart and Camby “one on one”…ie, straight up with no doubles. I set my fast break slider to nil and my crash boards to always getting back on D.

In other words, I set myself to play this game purely in the half court and make it a ‘grind it out’ type game. I knew I couldn’t beat Denver in a full court game.

The game: The Pepsi Center was rocking and the first quarter was a battle to stay close. It ended with Denver leading 19 –17 and Marcus Camby dominating.

The second quarter was ‘Starbury’ time and Stephon Marbury controlled the game brilliant…coming off picks, going around screens, scoring and getting to the free throw line. By the half I was 5 ahead. Denver had only 4 fast break points on me…two of which came from a monster K-Mart jam.

The three-quarter stayed relatively the same as I controlled the pace. Going into the 4th, we managed to get a break on the Nuggets as Crawford hit a couple of huge 3’s.

By now I was using the shot clock up almost every possession and every time I got on ORB I’d take the ball back out and set up again.

Melo was having a bad shooting night…my tactic of Woods and Lee being rotated all game seemed to work as was held to 16 points on 6 of 16 shooting.

The last minute I held my nerve and held my lead at the free throw line. Final score, Knicks 79 v Nuggets 71. A great road win.

MVP for the game was Marbury with 21 and 9 on 9/12 shooting with only one turnover. A great game from my floor leader. Also contributing was Channing Frye with 9 rebounds…the whole team contributed actually.

Best for Denver was Camby with 11 / 10 and 1 block. K Mart got 13 boards.

I can honestly say in over a decade now of playing NBA video games that this was one of my best wins. I have NEVER ‘coached’ a game to this extent before…I was changing the D, calling plays, slowing the pace, calling t/o’s, switching the match ups’ etc etc virtually all game. It felt great to get the win at the end and see all that effort rewarded.

We now return to MSG 3 and 6 and with confidence returning. It’s been a long, long road trip…something this game really does well is give you a genuine “on the road” feeling as the crowds have been insanely loud against me at times now for 6 straight games. It will be nice to have home support again as we host the Blazers.

I really feel like playing Live 06 on the 360 now after reading that but unfortunately, I can't

Still, I'm loving reading the strategies that your using. Keep that going as it's very entertaining.

Re: Monks 2005/2006 Knicks season : Live 360

A bit of a quicker one as I'm rushed today...

The build up: The Knicks returned to MSG on a high after our win in Denver. Not only was confidence high from that win, but out opponent Portland was one of the other teams we'd beaten on the recent road trip...the team was confident of beating them again.

The challenge: Portland can't shoot...so I just needed to stop their transition game and Zach.

Portlands record was poor and they were struggling in the WC.

The tactics: I played zone D all day and loose. I gave them the outside shot basically. Guys like Miles and Telfair couldn't hit...and when they penetrated, my D swarmed on them.

I also set my fast break slider to very high...I felt that, back and home and with the crowds energy behind us, we could run all day.

The game: We absolutely jumped on them. Marbury was on fire the first quarter for 15 points including 3 "and 1's". He could not be stopped. At quarter time, NYK 29 v Portland 10. The crowd was going insane!

To their credit, Portland hung around and Randolph had a big game and Miles played well with 16 5 and 5.

It was never close though and we ended up winning 91 - 78. Marbury was huge with 34 and 11.

Now it's off to Charlotte to take on Emeka Okafor and co.

We'll go into the game at 4 and 6 and with confidence high.

Looks like the season could be swinging for you.

Marbury is playing pretty well lately.

Good deal Monk... that should be a confidence booster for your club. Don't go in taking the Cat's too lightly though, as they are tougher than they would seem. Looking good though...

Underprepared Knicks devoured by young Cats

I went into this game feeling pretty good about my team.

Unusually for me, I decided to stay with the set strategy and not worry too much about the Bobcats. I figured we'd get out and run and beat them easily.

                    Wrong.

The Bobcats jumped on me with a 14-1 run after the scores were 14 all. They went into the first quarter break 28-15 up.

I was still confident...until Kareem ush caught fire and nailed 4 shots from 3 point land. Suddenly I was getting blown out...59 - 37 at the half.

The 3rd quarter stayed much the same...and by deep in the 4th I was down 20+ and the Bobcats played their entired bench for the rest of the game

The game was a blow out...97-76 We were underprepared and the blame sit's firmly with Coach Monk.

This Knicks team in LIVE 360 is very ordinary....with no real post scorers who are consistent and no real superior on ball defenders. Only Marbury is a highly rated player. This team needs to be in every game and working hard to even get close / use strategy.

Philly comes to MSG tonight...if the team isn't prepared to battle, AI is going to burn us.

Yep... underprepared... That's how it goes in this game. If you take soemone lightly, especially a young, athletic team, you'll get stomped.

Hopefully you can rebound against Philly though.

                        Coach Monk QUITS Knicks![/FONT]
After 4 more losses...including three blow outs...and a and 4 and 11 record...Coach Monk today announced his resignation as head coach of the New York Knicks.

"What can I say? We are terrible. We have no D...no post game...nothing. It's my fault. I take the blame".

Some journalists claim they heard Monk mumble under his breath "I blame IT for the $%^&house roster he gave me...these guys are crap!" as he left the building.

Coach Monk is rumoured to have accepted the head coaching position of the T-Wolves in the NBA 2K6 360 league...look for updates soon
