Re: The League
POWER RANKINGS01 (+0) The Denver Grizzlies continue to be the class of The League with their dominating defense and balanced, mistake-free offense. Barring an epic collapse, they are probably the favorites in the American Conference to make The League Championship Game.
02 (+5) On the opposite end of the spectrum from the Grizzlies are the Minnesota Reapers, who boast one of the best offenses in The League with running back Tony Forbes and quarterback Taylor Glover near the tops in The League in rushing and passing, respectively.
03 (+6) The Orlando Rage are running away with the southern division title in the American Conference. Their defense has been surprisingly opportunistic in the past few weeks, collecting seven takeaways in past four games, and the Jeff Brohm-led offense continues to excel.
04 (-1) The Las Vegas Outlaws drop only because other teams are playing superior, not because their own play fell off any. The scary thought is that when Rod Smart is fully healthy, which he hasn't been the past few weeks and has missed a few games, they'll be even better.
05 (-1) Like their crosstown counterparts, the Las Vegas Aces are playing well, but other teams are playing better. Kelvin Diggs has been a monster this season, and the defense, particularly the linebackers, have been ferocious.
06 (-1) The New York Nightmare are just getting starting running back Ty Dixon back from an injury that has sidelined him for much of the season. If Dixon can find his groove, as we expect him to, the Nightmare will have no problems making the playoffs.
07 (-5) The loss of quarterback Kevin McDougal hasn't gone unnoticed, as the team is slipping a bit, but backup Tim Lester is playing fairly well. They have a pivotal matchup with the Reapers next week that is critical for postseason seeding.
08 (+2) The only expansion club that has maintained an excellent level of play, and again the success of the Potomic Vipers can be attributed to passer Ralph McNeal and receiver Henry Jones. They've been a lethal combination to opposing defenses this season.
09 (+4) The San Diego Cyclones continue to play excellent team-oriented football. It's rather unfortunate that 8-3 is only good enough for third in their division at this point, so they'll have to play even better if they want to consider making the playoffs.
10 (+4) We said earlier that the Detroit Devils wouldn't compete this season. Apparently we were wrong. The skill players on offense are white-hot right now, but if the team wants to make a playoff push the offensive line needs to pick up their play a bit, particularly in pass protection.
11 (+4) The New England Regulars are pretty banged up right now, particularly at receiver and in the secondary, but despite this have maintained a fairly high level of play. They have a key divisional matchup with the Memphis Maniax this week that one should keep an eye on.
12 (-4) The loss of tailback Jermaine Knight is really hurting this club. All-world quarterback Julius Williams is doing all he can to keep the team from completely sinking, but things aren't looking too bright. There still is hope for the playoffs, however, and being the defending champs, they shouldn't be counted out until they are out.
13 (+9) They don't have the world's greatest record, but the Kansas City Crossfire have come on like gangbusters lately. Running back Mark Morris is quitely having a most excellent season.
14 (+7) Like the Crossfire, the Birmingham Bolts have found some consistency and are building momentum. Passer Casey Weldon and receiver Stepfret Williams have developed a real rapport over the last couple of games.
15 (-8) The Memphis Maniax are in a three-game skid that has allowed the New England Regulars to catch up with them in the race for the eastern division playoff berth. The two clubs face next week, and the game is a must-win for Memphis; if they can't pull it out, they may tumble out of the playoff race for good.
16 (+0) The San Francisco Demons continue to have a great passing game, but none of the other units are pulling their weight. The team needs to become more balanced quickly if they want to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
17 (-6) Other than Dontrelle Drayton, the Calgary Hitmen's offense has completely disappeared over the past few weeks, and they've gone from first to worst in the northern division of the National Conference. They haven't played well against any team that is a contender this season.
18 (+0) The Chicago Marauders remain the best team in the northern division of the American conference, but they are not a very good club right now. Part of the problem is that their top two receivers are both sidelined with injuries, but with Shane Spain under center, the passing game really hasn't been the issue with this club. They just haven't put it all together.
19 (-7) The injury to Tommy Player completely took the air out of the Waco Mavericks. They are now in a free-fall, and we're not sure that either Quincy Carter or Jeremy Lowe will be good enough to stop it. The defense has gone from bad to terrible as well.
20 (+2) The San Jose Armada have been as inconsistent as one would expect an expansion team to be in their first season. However, there are some bright spots, such as quarteback Bryant Terrell, to build on for next season.
21 (-4) The Los Angeles Xtreme have fallen apart at the seams. The problem begins with the offensive line, where they can't stay healthy, continues with the recent injury to the excellent receiver Jermaine Copeland, and culminate with the subpar running game.
22 (-3) The Seattle Reign are a hard team to analyze, because the only individual disappointment has been defensive end Chad Longstreet, who to this point only has but a single sack to his credit. Their failure this season has seemingly been a team effort.
23 (+2) As we said earlier in the season, the Cincinnati Crusaders this season would go as far as Kwazi Mbutabe could carry them. As good as Mbutabe has been playing lately, and bad as the northern division of the American Conference is, the final destination of this club could end up being the playoffs.
24 (+0) The New York - New Jersey Hitmen haven't really found their team identity this season. The team has been inconsistent in their performance in every facet of the game week after week.
25 (-5) The Santa Fe Unforgiven haven't performed as well as they would have liked in their first year, and the fact that they are down to their third-string quarterback due to injuries is no doubt part of that. Their kicker, Eugene Johnson, has been all over the place in their past four games as well, and has hit only a dreadful 57% of his field goals on the season.
26 (+1) The Dakota Comets' main problem this season has been their inability to create turnovers. They don't have too much talent as it is, being an expansion club, and the passing game will probably feature a new quarterback next season.
27 (-1) The benching of Mike Mexico may give the Washington Redhawks a bit of a spark, but at this point in the season it's too late. The team will no doubt try to move Mexico in the offseason, that is if they don't simply let him walk.
28 (+0) The Arizona Outlaws' defense continues to struggle, and with Tito Maas going down with an injury, don't be surprised if the offense slows down in the weeks to come as well. This season hasn't been very friendly for this club.
29 (+0) The Carolina Copperheads have no consistency in the running game, yet rookie quarterback Grant Tanner is still finding ways to pull in a few wins for this bad, bad football club. The offensive line needs a complete overhaul.
30 (+2) The Baltimore Bearcats finally have a win or two, but that doesn't change the fact that they have a dreadful -20 turnover ratio; the offense has thrown more interceptions than they have scored touchdowns. Major changes are needed all around.
31 (-1) The Sanctuary Divots are still the Sanctuary Divots. The season for this Canadian club hasn't been pretty at all, and tight end Evan Gross, who was supposed to be quite the receiving threat, has been a complete bust. It will be tough for this team to get much better in a hurry, however, as they won't have much pull in free agency due to a number of factors.
32 (-1) The Divots would have the first draft pick if it weren't for the completely dreadful Orlando Hammerheads. They are still yet to win a game on the season, and they may not get one.

Re: The League
The Waco Mavericks (5-6) attempt to end their recent four game skid against the Arizona Outlaws (2-9). The Mavericks won the first meeting earlier this season by the count of 31 to 21, but much has changed with both squads since their first encounter. Unlike the Week 4 matchup, Waco will not have their original quarterback, Tommy Player, and Arizona will have their intended starter in Chris Kane.Key Players: WacoHB Stacey Hartley: The Mavs' passing game has been, well, dreadful the past few weeks, but oddly the running game has been tops in The League, thanks mainly to the rapid development of third-year running back Stacey Hartley. Coming into this season, Hartley was seen as nothing more than a third down back, but his superior athletic ability and amazing performances have earned him the starting role in Waco. With the passing game in the quandary that it is, Hartley will need to come up big for the Mavs to have a chance.Key Players: Arizona
QB Quincy Carter: Quincy Carter faired decently for the first three quarters of his debut with the Waco Mavericks, but then the house of cards came tumbling down and he finished his first game against the Las Vegas Aces with dreadful numbers. Carter will be called upon again to move the Waco offense through the air, and he needs to perform like he did before the fourth quarter meltdown for the Mavs to compete.
CB Dennis Weathersby: Weathersby performed adequately in his first game with the Mavericks and at least for the short term appears to be the answer at left cornerback. Given the athleticism of the Outlaws' receiving corps, Weathersby needs to show some consistency and perform well this week.
QB Chris Kane: Kane did not play in the Outlaws' first matchup with the Mavericks, and his presence was sorely missed. The veteran will be in this time around, and though he is somewhat mistake-prone, he is the most experienced in the Outlaws' offensive scheme and has shown some flashes of brilliance lately. He needs to come up big today.
HB Justin Mears: Waco remains extremely vulnerable against the run, despite the many defensive adjustments they've attempted to correct this flaw. Mears has the potential to go wild in this game.
WR Corbin Hunt: The fiery Tito Maas has been sidelined recently with a pulled hamstring, and Corbin Hunt has filled the void left by Maas somewhat reasonably. He needs to continue to be a sure target for Chris Kane this week.

Re: The League
Week 13: Waco Mavericks (5-6) at Arizona Outlaws (2-9)
The Waco Mavericks' passing game failed them again this week, as the teams' quarterbacks combined for a mere 90 yards passing and threw three interceptions as the led their team to a fall against the Arizona Outlaws by the count of 41 to 10.
Quarterback Quincy Carter started the game for the Mavs, but was pulled midway through the third quarter when he threw a pass into a sea of Outlaws defenders on a third-and-long desperation heave. His replacement, Jeremy Lowe, faired worse, however, completing but three passes during his time in the game and throwing a pick of his own.
The defense played equally as bad, though during the game both safety Jared Simpson and linebacker Nick Rosario were lost to injury. The Mavericks' defense failed to contain Arizona's running game, allowing the Outlaws as a team to average over 9.0 yards per carry.
There were but two bright spots for the Mavericks; foremost, the running game continued to impress while the Mavs were able to use it, as Hartley gained 120 yards and a score on but 12 touches. Also, cornerback Dennis Weathersby shut down his side of the field, recording four tackles, five pass deflections, and an interception.
The Mavericks look to regroup, once again, next week as they host the Orlando Rage. The Rage will be looking to potentially clench the southern division title in the American Conference, and Waco will be looking to at the very least hold off the pass-happy squad from doing so, if but for one week.

Re: The League
Week 14 Preview: Waco Mavericks vs. Orlando Rage
The Waco Mavericks (5-7) are slumping heading into a home contest with the Orlando Rage (10-2). With a win this week, the Rage can all but clinch a playoff berth as they will have all but wrapped up their division title. The Mavs' on the other hand, still have very slim playoff hopes, but must win out and then likely still need help.Key Players: WacoWR Jason Tucker: Tucker is due for a breakout game, and this week's matchup just might be his ticket. Though the Orlando secondary is athletic, they lack experience and intangible talent, a weakness which Tucker may be able to exploit. In the first matchup between these two clubs, the CFL veteran had moderate success, catching passes for 64 yards in a team loss. He'll certainly look to be a bigger factor here.Key Players: Orlando
QB Quincy Carter: Carter will remain the starter for the forseeable future in Waco, if only because there is no one better than him on the roster or available. He needs to at least play efficiently this week and not make the mind-boggling mistakes that plagued him in last week's effort against Arizona.
WR Justin Jonas: With Stacey Hartley taking over the reigns at starting halfback, reserve veteran receiver Justin Jonas has been assigned to kick and punt returns. Jonas has experience on special teams and at one point in his career excelled in the area, but he has clearly lost a step, and he may be rusty. He needs to have a mistake-free, efficient effort; not necessarily a spectacular one, but good enough so that there is no dropoff from the loss of Hartley on the unit.
FS Scott Cloman: Though he isn't the most talented safety in The League, Cloman is proficient enough at what he does to be dangerous, especially against a quarterback as erratic as Quincy Carter. He will be playing center field most of the day, and any deep balls thrown to receivers in his vicinity are liable to be intercepted.
HB Brian Shay: Shay is the answer to the seemingly weekly question that is "who will tear apart the Mavs' defense on the ground next?". In limited action during the first matchup between these two clubs, Shay ran for 93 yards and a score; look for him to do even more damage this week against a battered and demoralized unit.
WR Dialleo Burks: In the first matchup between Waco and Orlando, Burks wasn't a huge factor in the outcome, as his teammate Kevin Swayne far outmatched then-Waco starter Cedric McFarland. Since then, Dennis Weathersby has replaced McFarland at cornerback, and Swayne will probably have a tougher time getting open. Thus it is up to Burks to provide quarterback Jeff Brohm with a fast target to throw to deep.

Re: The League
Week 14: Orlando Rage (10-2) at Waco Mavericks (5-7)
Though the Waco Mavericks put forth a much better effort than in previous weeks, they still found themselves on the short end of the stick as they were downed by the Orlando Rage, 31-24.
The catalyst of the victory for the Rage was the running game; backs Brian Shay and Michael Black gashed the Mavs' defense for a combined 243 yards and three touchdowns. The Rage were also aided by but a few crucial miscues by the Mavericks, one being a muffed punt by returner Justin Jonas early in the third quarter.
Many positives came out of the game for the Mavericks, however, despite the loss. Quarterback Quincy Carter put forth his best performance yet statistically, completing 50 percent of his passes for 244 yards, two scores, and most importantly no interceptions. The running game, while inconsistent, continued to play a large role in the Waco offense, as tailback Stacey Hartley ran for 156 yards and two scores. Finally, the pass defense was much improved, as Rage quarterback Jeff Brohm was held to a mere 43 yards passing with a score, and was sacked four times.
Injuries continued to pile up for the Mavericks in this game, unfortunately. Linebacker Nick Rosario was lost for the season with a shoulder separation, and center Kwame Vann will likely miss the Mavericks' next game against the San Francisco Demons with a partially torn bicep.

The League Player Of The Week
HB Rod Smart, Las Vegas Outlaws
Commentary and League News: As the playoffs continue to draw closer, many bids are still up in the air. The only team that will for certain be in the playoffs at this point is the Potomic Vipers, who have clinched their division this week with their tenth win. The Las Vegas Aces and Orlando Rage may be the next teams to clinch berths in their respective divisions and could do so as early as next week, but cannot do so unless teams behind them in their respective divisions lose another game.
The remaining five divisions are still up in the air. Among these, the most particularly interesting race to watch will be the one in the western division of the American Conference, where three teams - the Denver Grizzles, the San Diego Cyclones, and the Las Vegas Outlaws - all have 10-3 records. The northern division of the National Conference is also very tight right now, as all the teams in the division are within 1.5 games of each other, record-wise, with the Minnesota Reapers leading the pack, but looking vulnerable as they have lost their last two games.Comment
