How Sweet it is! LIU Dances into the Sixteen:

AP- Indianapolis- Former Georgetown centers Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Morning were on hand to witness the team that may be this years Cinderella story, upset their Alma Mater.
The high-octane LIU Blackbirds outscored the third seeded Georgetown Hoyas 109-92 to race in to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history. Ewing and Mourning undoubtedly were on hand to see in person current 7'0 Georgetown Sophomore center Alexander Polk, who many believe is the next great Georgetown center in a class with Ewing, Mutombo and Mourning. Polk scored 24 points and grabbed 12 boards but it was Hoya Senior point guard Dan Miles who kept the Hoyas close till the end of the game. Miles scored 30 points including 5 threes.

LIU's run and gun offense proved troublesome for the Hoya defense. LIU's backcourt combined for 37 points behind 12 points 6 assists and 5 rebounds from Senior point guard Russell Grady and a career high 28 points and 8 assists from freshman shooting guard sensation Boakia Richardson. Sophomore small forward Hollis Hodges 29 points led all Blackbird scorers, while Junior center Al Davenport repeatedly beat Polk down court rounding out three twenty plus point LIU scorers with 20 points.

"We played one heck of a game. We've worked hard all season and it's paying off. we had a great offense day. Hollis, Russel and Bo [Boakai] were unbelievable. Al did a great job on Polk. Now we have to put this behind us and focus on Wisconsin" said LIU Coach Brian Keller.

second seed Wisconsin defeated Ohio State 86-51.

Wisconsin Headed To Elite 8 Showdown With Undefeated UConn:

AP-Chicago-Senior All-American shooting guard Dallas Hall and the second seeded Wisconsin Badgers were too much for the LIU Blackbirds, winning 85-69 to advance to the Elite 8 and a matchup with the undefeated UConn Huskies. Hall finished with 29 points on 14-18 shooting and Freshmen point guard Antoine Perry scored 18 points all on three pointers and dished out a career high 14 assists. A smothering half-court Badger defense held high scoring LIU to only 69 points. Blackbird Junior center Al Davenport was the only LIU player in double figures with 24 points.

The Badgers turned a 6 point halftime defecit into an insurmountable 16 point lead with about 8 minutes remaining in the second half. "What can I say Wisconsin has a great defensive team. they rebounded well and stopped our break. We live off of turnovers and defensive rebounds and they limitd what we could do in the second half" said LIU Coach Brian Keller.

When asked if he was considering leaving LIU, Keller declined to comment. Rumors continue to swirl as Keller is considered by many as a top choice for a struggling program having won three consecutive Coach of the Year awards in the NEC since arriving at LIU.

LIU Head Coach Keller to Step Down

AP-New York- Students and Alumni were saddened but not suprised when LIU Head Coach Brian Keller announced his resignation after three seasons leading the Blackbirds. Rumors have Keller accepting positions at Princeton, Tennessee, Providence, Oklahoma State, or even Arkansas. Keller announced his resignation at a live news conference held on campus this afternoon.

"I would like to thank the University, students, alumni and most importantly my players for an outstanding three years here at LIU. I wish this University the best in everything it does and LIU will have a special place in my heart as my first Head Coaching position. We have had some great success," said Keller. When asked where he will be going next Keller was vague, "Hopefully somewhere I can put together a program like the one that I have here. All the pieces for LIU to be successful are in place".

Player reactions were mixed. Sophomore forward Craig Glover the highest rated recruit of Keller's tenure was not suprised by his Coach's resignation, "He's a great coach and I wish him luck, but had I known he was leaving the year after signing me I may have decided differently. Maybe I'll just have to follow him..."

Coaching Carousel In Full Swing: Lousville Center of Change:

AP-Louisville, Kentucky- The college basketball landscape has been altered significantly in the last 48 hours and Louisville is the epicenter of change. Louisville, in a nationally televised news conference in just the past 45 minutes has announced the resignation of Head Coach Rick Pitino and the hiring of former Long Island University Blackbird Coach Brian Keller. In an unusual format for a press conference both ex-coach Pitino and new coach Keller spoke about their new situations.

"I am excited to be here at Louisville and hope to live up to the expectations and greatness of past coaches here like Coach Pitino and Coach Denny Crum" said Keller.

However, shortly after Keller finished his speech Coach Pitino dropped a college basketball bombshell in his farewell address, "I wish Coach Keller the best of luck here at Louisville and hopefully we will have many great battles. I would like to announce that I have accepted the position of Head Coach at the University of Kentucky for next season".

Pitino hopes to return his past success at Kentucky after several unsuccessful seasons with the Boston Celtics and decent seasons at Lousville. As the carousel swings round and round the next question is where does recently fired Kentucky Wildcat Coach Tubby Smith end up? Ironically, it was Keller's LIU team that upset Kentucky in the opening round of the NCAA tournament and led to Smith's firing just 3 seasons removed from the Final Four.

                      Louisville Routs LSU in Opener:

AP-Louisville- If Louisville's 88-46 rout of LSU is any indication of how the Cardinals plan to play every night in Freedom Hall Conference USA better pay attention. New Coach Brian Keller got his first win and Louisville fans got a taste of what Keller brought from LIU-full court pressure defense, and fast break offense. The Cardinals outrebounded the Tigers by 14 and forced 29 tournovers in the 42 point win.

Freshmen small forward Antawn Mohammed (6'6 224, Overland Park, Kansas ranked the #152 best recruit) had 14 points and Frosh power forward Trace Patton (6'9 268 Cumberland, Rhode Island #118) had 10 rebounds in their debuts. Junior shooting guard Ron Meredith led 6 double figure Louisville players with 20 points.

Are you keeping track of how LIU is doing since you left, now that you're at Louisville? I saw your comment that you missed them - LOL. How are the guys you recruited at LIU doing in your absence? I'm sure I'll be following the careers of my UWGB guys once I move on.
