2006 Baltimore Orioles: Angelos Free (MVP05)

Not to steal the thunder away from the other O's dynasty, but it seems dormant. I'll also do a series by series recap instead of game by game or month by month. Makes it a little easier.

      Series 1: vs. Oakland A's April 4-7

      Series recap
      @

      Game One
      Baltimore 6, Oakland 0
      Game Two
      Baltimore 13, Oakland 5
      Game Three
      Baltimore 5, Oakland 1

      Game 1:

      W: Kris Benson (1-0)
      L: Barry Zito (0-1)

Opening Day started out well for the O's. The pitching matchup was Zito against Benson. The Orioles got to Zito early, scoring 3 runs in the 1st and a single run in thr 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings. Miguel Tejada hit his first home run of the season, as did Kevin Millar. Melvin Mora had 2 home runs on the day.

      Game 2:

      W: Daniel Cabrera (1-0)
      L: Rich Harden (0-1)

Rich Harden would like to forget this start. Things started out good in the 1st inning, but the next one got ugly. The O's put up 8 runs in the 2nd inning, capped off by a Corey Patterson grand slam. Jay Gibbons hit a 3-run shot, and Melvin Mora had 2 more home runs, quickly jumping out to 4 on the year. Daniel Cabrera got shaken up in the 6th, allowing 3 runs. Todd Williams and Sendy Rleal combined to hold down the win.

      W: Bruce Chen (1-0)
      L: Dan Haren (0-1)

Bruce Chen pitched a gem for the Orioles, going 7 innings and only giving up 3 hits and 1 run, a Mark Ellis homer in the 4th inning. Brian Roberts hit a solo home run, his 1st. Re: 2006 Baltimore Orioles: Angelos Free (MVP05)

Series 2:@ New York Yankees April 8-10

        Game 1:

        Orioles: 5
        Yankees: 3

        W: Rodrigo Lopez (1-0)
        L: Shawn Chacon (0-1)

The Orioles again jumped out to an early lead, putting up 3 runs in the 3rd inning. Nick Markakis had an RBI single, Brian Roberts also had an RBI single, and another run was scored due to a Yankees throwing error. Miguel Tejada hit his 3rd homer of the year in the 5th inning, and Markakis had another RBI single in the 9th. Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano, and Hideki Matsui drove in the 3 runs for New York. Rodrigo Lopez went 5 innings for the Orioles, giving up 3 runs. Chris Ray earned his first career save.

        Game 2:

        Orioles: 5
        Yankees: 0

        W: Erik Bedard (1-0)
        L: Carl Pavano (0-1)

Erik Bedard pitched a masterpiece for the O's. Bedard went the full 9 innings, giving up just 4 hits and shutting out the powerful Yankee lineup. He also had 9 strikeouts. All Oriole runs came off of home runs. Brian Roberts, Javy Lopez, and Kevin Millar all had solo shots, and Corey Patterson had a 2 run blast in the 8th inning. Carl Pavano looked strong early, but faltered quickly. The duo of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez was shut down, going a combined 2-8 with 4 strikeouts, Rodriguez with 3 of them.

        Game 3:

        Orioles: 13
        Yankees: 4

        W: Kris Benson (2-0)
        L: Randy Johnson (1-1)

The Orioles offense exploded in the first two innings. Melvin Mora drove in Brian Roberts with a single, making it 1-0 in the first inning. The 2nd inning the Orioles tore Randy Johnson apart. Johnson walked Corey Patterson to load the bases, and Brian Roberts drove in a run with an infield single. Nick Markakis followed with a 2 run single, making it 4-0 Baltimore. The next batter was Mora, who drove in yet another run with a single. Miguel Tejada walked, and then Ramon Hernandez hit a 2 RBI single up the middle to make it 7-0.

Tejada scored from 3rd on a Jay Gibbons groundout, making it 8-0. Javy Lopez came through with 2 out double, scoring Hernandez, putting the score at 9-0. New York managed to score a run in the 2nd, putting them back within 8. Things got worse for the Big Unit, as Roberts hit a solo homer in the 3rd, making the score 10-1. Randy Johnson exited after just 1.1 innings. Octavio Dotel allowed another run in the 4th inning, Corey Patterson drove in Jay Gibbons. 11-1 was the score. Benson gave up 2 runs thanks to walks in the bottom of the 4th, the score was 11-3. Markakis led off the 5th with a solo home run, his 1st career homer, making it 12-3. They added another run in the 8th, as did the Yankees. The Yankees scored 4 runs, but only had 2 hits on the day.

Orioles starter Kris Benson pitched a fantastic game, going 7 innings giving up 1 hit and 3 home runs. The only problem was 9 walks. He walked the bases loaded twice, giving up 2 runs. John Parrish walked in a run in the 8th, and Sendy Rleal finished up the game.

Randy Johnson got absolutely shelled, giving up 7 runs (6 earned), and only 1 strikeout. His ERA blew up to 9.39. Octavio Dotel, Jaret Wright, and Tanyon Sturtze finished out the game, giving up the other 6 runs.

2 straight series sweeps for the Orioles, putting them at 6-0 on the year. They travel to Tampa next for a 3 game set with the Devil Rays.
