Boston Red Sox 2006 (MLB 06)

New Look Bo Sox Ready To Make It Back to World Series

    Boston, MA -

As the last spring training out was being called, Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein was already scheming on how to make this years club better.

"We have a little bit of speed this year and I think more consistent contact hitters, but there's always room for improvement," Epstein said in his press box. After a contract dispute and leaving the club, Theo is back in full force, acquiring another arm in Jason Johnson from the Indians in the last few days.

"Sure the team lost a lot of names, but we have also gained a good number too. Look at Beckett, Lowell, Loretta, Crisp, etc. Our club is solid."

Even with all the new names, Red Sox fans cannot forget the old fan favorites like Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller and the hardest pill the swallow, the loss of Johnny Damon... To the Yankees.

As much as Damon will be missed, Coco Crisp is a great addition in center field with his great speed and ability to make a game saving catch.

It will also be interesting to see how the pitching situation plays out as there are seven capable starters on the 25 man roster. Likely, the two men out will be Johnson and David Pauley, who only made the pro team after a great spring going 4-1 with a 2.51 ERA in four starts.

Other rookies on the squad include pitchers Craig Hansen and Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon will be the closer on opening day after showing great command with his pitches in spring.

With the new look, the Boston Red Sox look to get back to the Post-Season in a highly competitive AL East and make a splash again in the playoffs.

Man-Ram and Youkilis Strut Over Texas

        ARLINGTON, TX -

        Game 1: Boston 7 - Texas 2

        W - (BOS) C. Schilling (1-0) - 9 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
        L - (TEX) K. Millwood (0-1) - 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 6 K

Player of the Game - (BOS) M. Ramirez 3-5, HR

        (BOS) C. Crisp 3-4, 2 RBI
        (BOS) T. Nixon 3-4
        (TEX) I. Kinsler 2-3, HR

Curt Schilling had everything on opening day in Texas as he went all nine innings only allowing two earned runs.
"It's a great way to start of the year," said Schilling after the game.
Manny Ramirez provided the offensive spark with his home run in the 5th to put the Sox up 5-1 and seal the game.

        Game 2: Texas 11 - Boston 8

        W - (TEX) F. Cordero (1-0) - 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
        L - (BOS) J. Papelbon (0-1) - 0.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Player of the Game - (TEX) B. Wilkerson 3-4, 2 HR

        (BOS) K. Youkilis 3-5, 2 RBI, HR
        (BOS) M. Lowell 2-5, 2 RBI

It looked as if Boston were on their way to an easy victory with John Papelbon on to close the game out in the ninth. Things however turned sour quick as two throwing errors and poor pitching left the Red Sox with a loss and a blown oppertunity.
Josh Beckett pitched good in his Red Sox debut going six innings and only allowing three runs in the no decision.
"You can't let easy wins slip like that," said Red Sox Manager Terry Francona, "Even if there are 160 games left, you need each and every win."

        Game 3: Boston 11 - Texas 6

        W - M. Clement (1-0) - 5.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
        L - J. Koronka (0-1) - 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Player of the Game - (BOS) M. Ramirez 3-5, 2 HR

        (BOS) K. Youkilis 2-5, 5 RBI
        (TEX) M. Young 2-4
        (TEX) M. Teixeira 3 RBI

The offense continued in the third game of the series as Manny Ramirez finished off a very impressive three games with a .467 average and four home runs.
"He's a very important peice of our squad," said close friend and teammate David Ortiz. Ramirez helped put the game away in the 5th as himself and Mike Lowell hit solo home runs. An inning earlier Kevin Youkilis hit a grand slam, the first of his career.
Rookie pitcher Craig Hansen also got a chance to pitch as he went two scoreless innings.
"I am very pleased with our offensive production in the first couple games," stated Francona. "Now we just need to sharpen our pitching a bit too."

Javy Lopez, the DH for Baltimore hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the 8th to top it all off.
"I hit the ball extremely well tonight," said Lopez who had an incrediable 9 RBI's. "A game like this doesn't come around every day."

Both squads traded 2 run innings in the 3rd to set up a close game all day long. It was the in the 6th however, marked by a Brandon Fahey solo HR, that the game was decided in.
Both Rodrigo Lopez and Curt Schilling put on a show, but in the end the O's came out with the one run victory and the series.

            Solid Pitching Stumps Sox

            BOSTON, MA -

            Game 1: Boston 5 - Toronto 1

            W - (BOS) J. Beckett (1-0) - 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
            L - (TOR) A. Burnett (0-1) - 7.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 12 K

Player of the Game - (BOS) Kevin Youkilis 1-4, HR, 2 RBI

            Stats

            (BOS) M. Ramirez 1-4, RBI
(BOS) D. Ortiz 2-4, HR, RBI
            (TOR) S. Hillenbrand 0-3, RBI
            (TOR) T. Glaus 2-4

In the home opener at Fenway Park, the Boston faithfull were treated to an astounding pitching duel between Josh Beckett and A.J. Burnett. Burnett sat down 12 Red Sox on strike outs while Beckett at one point had retired 12 straight Jays.
Kevin Youkilis was the deciding factor with his two run home run in the 8th to put the Red Sox up for good.
"We are lucky to have players on this team who are very clutch, Kevin is one of these guys," said Boston Manager Terry Francona.

            Game 2: Toronto 3 - Boston 0

            W - (TOR) T. Lilly (2-0) - 8.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
            L - (BOS) M. Clement (1-1) - 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
            S - (TOR) B. Ryan (1) - 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Player of the Game - (TOR) SP - Ted Lilly

            Stats

            (BOS) D. Mirabelli 1-3
            (BOS) M. Ramirez 1-4
            (TOR) F. Catalanotto 2-4, 2 RBI
            (TOR) E. Hinske 1-5, RBI

Ted Lilly was on his way to do the unthinkable: No hit the powerful Boston Red Sox. This was until the bottom of the 8th when Doug Mirabelli finally found first on a single to right field.
"You start to think about it a little bit once you get into the fifth, then a little more in the sixth, and so on," said Lilly about the no hitter. "Then when it finally get's busted up, it's almost a relief in a sense because now your mind can go back to where it should be."
Matt Clement also had a good start for the Red Sox, only allowing two earned runs.
Even with the lack of hitting, the Sox still made it close, loading the bases up in the 9th with two out only to see Coco Crisp ground out to Glaus to end the game.
Doug Mirabelli got the start in place of Jason Varitek only fifteen minutes before game time. Varitek tweaked his hamstring in a warm up drill and looks to be out for about a week.

            Game 3: Toronto 9 - Boston 5

            W - (TOR) J. Speier (1-0) - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
            L - (BOS) J. Papelbon (0-2) - 0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Player of the Game - (TOR) Russ Adams 2-2, 3 RBI

            Stats

            (BOS) T. Nixon 2-4,
            (BOS) M. Ramirez 1-4, 2 RBI
            (BOS) C. Crisp 3-4, RBI
            (TOR) L. Overbay 2-4, RBI
            (TOR) T. Glaus 2-5
            (TOR) E. Hinske 2-4
            (TOR) J. McDonald 1-1, HR, 3 RBI

In only his third outing, rookie closer Johnathan Papelbon managed to blow and lose his second game of the season. Papelbon took a one run lead into the 9th only to see Russ Adams double in two runs and pinch hitter John McDonald hit a three run home run.
David Wells started for the Sox and pitched well only giving up two runs in five and two thirds innings pitched. For the Jays, rookie Casey Janssen went six and a third giving up four runs.
In the 8th inning, it looked as if the Red Sox may have won the game off a Mark Loretta solo home run to take a one run lead, however that was not the case.
Outfield Manny Ramirez also kept his RBI streak going which is now at six games.

            Red Sox News and Notes

            - Early in the morning before the third game of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox sent relief pitcher Javier Lopez to AAA Pawtucket and brought up outfielder Willlie Harris. This does however create a problem in the Sox bullpen as there are now no left handers.
"We will deal with the lack of lefties very soon," said Francona. "Lopez wasn't ready to pitch up here yet, and it doesn't look like any of the guys in Pawtucket are ready to come up here just yet.

            - The Red Sox organization released minor league relief pitchers Gil Gallardo and Reinaldo Coomis who were currently playing in AA Portland.

            - In an interesting move, Boston purchased two contracts from the independent CanAm baseball league's team the New Haven County Cutters. Starting pitchers Eloy Greer and James Chapman were both signed to long term, low salary contracts and were designated to AA Portland.
"Both these players look to have good upsides in them even if the signings look meaningless," said Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer. "We locked these guys up to longer term contracts with a club option at the end of it so I think both sides got good deals here."

Beckett And Clement Solid As Sox Take 3 of 4

              BOSTON, MA -

              Game 1: Seattle 6 - Boston 5

              W - (SEA) J. Moyer (1-2) - 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
              L - (BOS) T. Wakefield (0-2) - 6.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
              S - (SEA) J. Putz (1) - 0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Player of the Game - (SEA) Raul Ibanez 3-4, HR, 2 RBI

              Stats

              (BOS) A. Cora 3-5, RBI
              (BOS) K. Youkilis 2-5, 2 RBI
              (SEA) Ichiro 2-5, RBI
              (SEA) R. Petagine 3-4
              (SEA) C. Everett 3-4, RBI

Former Red Sox Roberto Petagine showed why maybe Theo and the gang should have kept him around after the 2005 season as he slugged the ball all over Fenway in game one of Boston and Seattle's four game series. Petagine combined with Carl Everett and the solid pitching of Jaime Moyer to pick up the win which gave Boston their third loss in a row.
Going into the ninth, the Red Sox only trailed by two runs with the score 4-2. However, Seattle scored two more in the top of the inning which was back breaking as in the bottom of the ninth Boston was able to score three in a comeback attempt only to lose 6-5.
"I do like the fact that we're able to battle back in a game even if we are down going into the ninth," said outfielder Willy Mo Pena who hit a solo home run in the 9th. "It shows the mark of a good team as we don't just give up the win."
There was some good news for the Bo Sox though, as after game one, catcher and team captain Jason Varitek was cleared to play in game two by team doctors.

              Game 2: Boston 7 - Seattle 6

              W - (BOS) J. Johnson (1-0) - 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
              L - (SEA) J. Woods (0-1) - 0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
              S - (BOS) J. Papelbon (1) - 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Player of the Game - (BOS) Alex Gonzalez 3-4, HR, 3 RBI

              Stats

              (BOS) M. Ramirez 2-5, HR, 2 RBI
              (BOS) K. Youkilis 3-5
              (SEA) Ichiro 3-5, RBI
              (SEA) J. Lopez 2-5, 2 RBI
              (SEA) W. Bloomquist 2-3

Starting pitchers Jarrod Washburn and Curt Schilling both seemed to have trouble finding their stuff at the early on in game two's contest. Washburn was chased in the third after allowing a three run home run to Alex Gonzalez to give Boston a 5-4 lead. Schilling on the other hand gave up a four run second, but was able to hold on to pitch five innings with the lead only to see Jason Johnson blow the decision.
"After the second I was pretty drained," said Schilling. "But when we put up three for ourselves in the third, I found it in me to keep plugging as long as I could."
Boston took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth after Seattle had tied it a half inning earlier. Manny Ramirez delivered with a two run home run into the straight away center off reliever Jake Woods.

              Game 3: Boston 6 - Seattle 1

              W - (BOS) J. Beckett (2-0) - 8.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
              L - (SEA) F. Hernandez (0-1) - 4 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Player of the Game - (BOS) Josh Beckett

              Stats

              (BOS) W. Harris 2-4, HR, 2 RBI
              (BOS) D. Ortiz 2-4
              (BOS) M. Lowell 2-4, RBI
              (SEA) S. Choo 1-4, RBI
              (SEA) R. Sexson 1-4

Josh Beckett showed the Fenway faithful exactly why the Red Sox went out and signed him in the off season. Beckett shut down Mariner and Mariner all the way into the ninth when he gave up a run on a few hits and had to be pulled.
"I really wanted him to get the complete game," said Red Sox Manager Terry Francona. "If he would have gotten one more out I would have kept him in, but I didn't want his great start turn out to have extra earned runs."
Beckett and Felix Hernandez looked like they were in a pitching duel until the fourth when Hernadez seemed to implode. First catcher Jason Varitek hit an RBI double which was followed by and Mike Lowell RBI single. Willy Mo Pena then added a big punch with a two run home run and just two batters later, outfielder Willie Harris added another two run shot in his Boston debut. It all added up to a six run inning and a Red Sox win.

What Josh Beckett couldn't achieve a night before, Matt Clement completed in the last game of the Mariner's and Red Sox four game series. Clement looked great for the first time since last year before the accident in Tampa Bay. On the other side of the field, the struggles of Joel Pinero continue early on in the year. Having lost all of his starts, Pinero now holds a 12.27 ERA.
Walks were huge for the Sox as Pinero allowed six of them go to first without having to swing the bat. The most critical of these walks occurred in the 1st when Pinero walked in two runs.
"We really needed to take this series to boost our confidence a little," said Red Sox captain Jason Varitek who added a two run home run of his own in the 5th. "It's early in the year and we don't want to be a slow starter."

              Red Sox News and Notes

              - After their series win against the Mariners, the Red Sox assigned rookie relief pitcher Craig Hanson to AAA Pawtucket and brought up left hander Javier Lopez. Hanson has pitched well in his three appearances for the Sox, only allowing one earned run in a five and a third innings pitcher.
"Craig is a great young arm," said Francona. "The problem is, he isn't going to get enough innings to develop here. In Pawtucket he'll be the set up man and pitch in important roles. I do expect him back here sometime in the future though."
Javier Lopez was sent down five days earlier after looking very rusty in his Red Sox debut. Lopez appeared in four games for Pawtucket and only allowed an earned run in four and two thirds innings.
"Lopez looks like he has maybe got things straightened out down there," said Francona about the lefty.
Also, with no trade opportunities so early in the year, the Red Sox were forced to fix their lack of left hands in the pen from their own system rather then from somewhere else.
