    BYU battles for the MWC

Brigham Young University is buzzing with anticipation this week, with the new college football season preparing to kickoff. BYU looks to be in good shape to compete for the title in the Mountain West Conference. Leading the Cougar squad will be returning starter, senior quarterback, John Beck, who looks to be breaking school records in passing yards this season. Backing up John Beck on offense is Senior Tailback, Curtis Brown and Tight End, Johnny Harline. “Our offense could be quite dominant this year. Heisman votes may be a long shot, but both Beck and Brown have the potential to make some noise on the national level,” newly signed coach Roger Hummerson said of his cougar offense. Coach Hummerson was signed last off season in a surprising move. Hummerson lacks the coaching experience and accolades that the other candidates for the head coach position had. Despite this, however, Hummerson appears to have the right stuff and might just be what this squad needs to take it to the top.
The new season starts this weekend, September 2nd, with a big game against Arizona. “We are going out there looking for the W. Anything less is unacceptable.” This team is in it to win and Coach Hummerson has made that point clear. “Coach Hummerson expects a lot out of us,” quarterback John Beck said Wednesday in an interview. “With the talent we have, winning the Mountain West is more than just a possibility.” Can this team really win conference? Time will tell, but Coach Hummerson has made his opinion clear, “We WILL win the Mountain West, period.” Saturday's game against Arizona looks to be a major statement game in telling whether or not Hummerson's statement is bold and realistic, or just plain bold. Provo, Utah, you can go ahead and be excited, you might have some good reasons to be.

Things did not go according to plan for the Brigham Young Cougars last Saturday. QB John Beck had a dismal showing, throwing 5 interceptions, 4 in the first half alone. RB Curtis Brown also had his fair share of problems, rushing for 24 yds on 16 carries. The bright spots to this otherwise embarrassing showing was the defensive fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by ROLB Staffieri and Beck rushing for over 100 yds.
All was not bad in this game against the Wildcats. BYU did in fact make an amazing fourth quarter come back in which they came a failed two point conversion away from tying up the game with just a couple minutes left on the clock. “We showed our weakness and also our strengths. We demonstrated how bad we can be and also how good we can be. All in all, it was a disappointing game, but there are certainly things to be learned from Saturday’s performance,” Coach Hummerson said after the game. “We will have to regroup and coming out charging against Tulsa and get that first win of the season.”
It was a rough loss for the Cougars who were hoping to demonstrate that they have what it takes to be a contender this year, but Saturday’s loss was not in vain and I’m sure that BYU will be ready to go next week against Tulsa as we kick off BYU’s first home game of the season.

In what looked to be another devastating loss for this Cougar squad, being down 17 - 0 in the 2nd quarter, BYU managed to pull off a major comeback winning by 10 against Tulsa. “Everything was going wrong in the beginning. Our first 3 possessions ended turnovers. Things were not looking bright”, Coach Hummerson said. However, shortly following this, Curtis Brown was able to get BYU’s first touchdown of the game making a remarkable 65 Yd sprint to the end zone. This did not give BYU the win by any means, but rather, from that point on the Cougars clipped and clawed their way back into the ball game and in the 3rd and 4th quarters made their move, eventually dismantling any hopes Tulsa had in a victory.
“We are capable of scoring points very quickly if we have to. That’s one of the great threats we have,” quarterback John Beck said after passing the ball for 2 TD and only 1 INT. A huge improvement over last game’s 5 INT display. “What it really came down to though, was our defense. They made some big time plays and some key stops for us when we needed them,” Coach Hummerson said in our interview. “We look forward to playing Boston College next week and proving that we are capable of playing just as good as we did today for an entire game. Not just one half.”
Indeed, the Cougars will need such a performance as they prepare to meet the Golden Eagles this coming Saturday. Boston College has underachieved thus far this season and will be looking to redeem themselves against the Cougars. Both teams will be looking to prove what they are made of, but only one will come out on top.

What difficulty are you on? I started 2-3 with TCU on heisman. MWC is tough on that difficulty, I know that much.

started on heisman but switched to AA. I make too many stupid mistakes to really be competitive on Heisman right now.
