    Denver Broncos (Madden 07)

It's Christmas and I have a few minutes before more family gets here so, why not, lets start a Denver Broncos Dynasty.

    Denver, C0 -

Bring in the 52 inch plasma, fire up the grill and make sure the wife is out with her friends because the boys are coming over to watch week one of the 2006/2007 NFL season. For four weeks you have had to suffer through meaningless pre-season games on the NFL Network, but now CBS, Fox, NBC and ESPN will be bringing you the real thing... until week 12 of course when the NFL Network gets back into the thick of things on the best night for football... Thursday.
The NFL Network will be premiering its NFL season coverage with the Denver Broncos taking on the Chiefs, but before we get too ahead of ourselves, we should probably look at what the first half of the season has in store for the mile high crew.
The Broncos are coming into the new season with a possible quarterback controversy on their hands as rookie Jay Cutler out of Vanderbilt looks to be breathing down Jake Plummers neck. Can the snake somehow slither out of this one? According to Head Coach Mike Shanahan, Jake has nothing to be worried about... yet.
"Jake is our guy," Coach Shanahan told the media after the last Denver pre-season game against Arizona. "How can you ask me if a guy who's been in this league for almost 10 years, and with us for 3 of thoes years, will be sitting down in favor of a rookie?"
Even with the words of confidence, Mike also stated that, "of course if a change needed to be made, then it will be made."
Another interesting depth chart story is at running back with both Mike Bell and Tatum Bell showing great ability.
"They call us the twins," laughed Mike Bell way back during mini camp. "Being an un drafted rookie though, I just want to make this squad." Well, he did a lot more then just make the team.
Mike carries the ball well, and can break tackles while Tatum has amazing breakaway speed. Which Bell will be ringing come week one? As it is now, Tatum Bell will likely be starting on Sunday against St. Louis mainly on his 32 carries, 188 yard performance in pre-season week 2 against Tennessee.
The one other question mark on the squad is at corner. Champ Bailey will be matching up against the T.O's, Chad Johnson's and Randy Moss' of the league, but who will be his counter part. At the start of mini camp and during training camp, it looked as if Darrent Williams would be the second corner on the depth chart, but at this point Domonique Foxworth seems to be Coach Shanahan's choice.
"Domonique has been solid all pre-season and right now as a coaching staff we feel more comfortable with him at corner," said the Denver Head Coach.
The rest of the team is pretty much set in stone as Rod Smith and new comer Jevon Walker will be the two top wide outs, while John Lynch will continue to offer hellish blows to opposing receivers.
The Broncos also made three free agent signings before the pre-season was over. Former Florida High School Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football Adiran McPherson was signed to be the third string quarter back while receiver Domenix Hixon and tackel Courtney Van Buren were also signed.
The Broncos roster at the moment looks like this:

Broncos' Rally For Big Opening Game Comeback

    St. Louis, MO -

As the Rams and Broncos hit the showers at half, the hometown St. Louis crowd was feeling pretty confident about their home opener for the new NFL season. Up 31-14, the Rams were in the drivers seat, seaming to score at will on the Denver defense and it looked like the same would continue into the second half. Jake Plummer however had different plans. Proving that he is the man in orange crush country, Plummer led a 17 point fourth quarter comeback which was capped off by a chip shot 19 yard Jason Elam game winning field goal.
"It's professional sports, you can never count a team out of anything," said Plummer who threw for an impressive 374 yards. "I knew that we couldn't run the ball being down as much as were, especially going into the fourth, so I knew it was all on my shoulders."
The contest started out harmless enough, both teams trading major scores. The second however is where St. Louis exploded for 24 points, including two Marc Bulger passing touchdowns. Kyle Johnson also scored from seven yards out for Denver.
"The mood in the room after the second was very down," said Denver coach Mike Shanahan. "I pretty much ripped into the guys a little bit and got them fired up to come out hard in the second half."
Even with the motivation, the third was stale as Elam added two field goals and St. Louis place kicker Jeff Wilkins added one of his own. What Shanahan was trying to get across must have clicked in the fourth however as the Broncos looked like a totally different ball team.
First, Jake Plummer took advantage of a Domonique Foxworth interception which placed Denver inside the Rams 30 yard line. Plummer found Mike Bell for a 14 yard touchdown pass. Then after a few spirited defensive stands, Plummer drove the Broncos all the way to the five where Tatum Bell finished it off with a rush of his own.
After a St. Louis three and out and with the game now tied, the Broncos took over with the ball at their own 1. Plummer got one chance with 2:01 left on the clock to win the game. Throwing, scrambling and just simply being the snake he is, Plummer drove the ball all the way down to set up a Jason Elam 19 game winning kick.
"Jake showed so much maturity," said Shanahan. "The fact that the drive started out in the depths of our own end, and we were able to run an effective two minute offense. Really, that's all on the quarterback."
Even with the win, the Broncos realize they didn't play that great of a football game.
"We really need to pick it up on defense," said safety John Lynch. "We can't expect to give up 34 points on our part and have a chance to win every game, it just isn't realistic."
Also, the storied Bronco running game was not very effective as Tatum Bell had 32 carries and picked up 91 yards.
The Broncos will now come home for their season opener as they take on the Kansas City Chiefs.

      College Report

The NCAA Football season has been on it's way now for two weeks and so far a few players are standing out as possible first round NFL picks.

Senior's Brady Quinn (QB) and Jeff Samardzija (WR) are looking good for the Fighting Irish through their first two wins against Georgia Tech and Penn State, both ranked teams. Quinn has thrown for 554 Yards, while Samardzija has caught 256 of those yards.

Oklahoma's Junior running back Adrian Peterson is looking strong, rushing for 295 yards and three touchdowns in wins against UAB and Washington.

Troy Smith may be the most impressive player in the country right now as he led his #1 ranked Ohio State squad over then ranked #2 Texas.

Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson has a load of talent and is showing it with 385 total yards of receptions so far. Johnson has also pulled in 5 touchdowns in a win against Samford and loss vs. Notre Dame.

      Mid-Major Watch

Senior quarter back Jeff Rowe is a shining star for Nevada. Rowe has thrown for 689 yards (leading NCAA Div 1) and five touchdowns. These numbers came from a win against Fresno State and a loss to 17th ranked Arizona Sate in which he was named Player of the Game.

Junior running back Justin Buries has 268 yards on the ground along with four touchdowns for New Mexico State in two weeks so far. Buries helped New Mexico pick up their first win, after going 0-12 last season, against Youngstown State and performed very well in a close loss to New Mexico.

        Re: Denver Broncos (Madden 07)

First off, RIP Darrent Williams, its a real shame...

Turnovers and Kennison Hand it to Denver

        Denver, CO -

In the NFL there are not many receivers who can say that they "had Champ Bailey's number" at one point in their career. Well, it looks like Kansas City wide out Eddie Kennison can make that statement, at least for now, as he caught three touchdowns while being matched up against Champ in a 28-10 Kansas City win.
"Champ has to be one of the best corners in the league right now," said Kennison after the win. "No one has his number."
Even with the humble words, Kennison should not deny that he did not put on a show starting with a 78 yard reception just a few minutes into the contest. He followed it up in the 2nd with a 18 yard touchdown, one play after Bronco running back Tatum Bell fumbled the ball.
"Turnovers were our number one enemy out there today," said Denver Head Coach Mike Shanahan. "We need to learn how to keep care of the ball."
Bell wasn't the only one coughing up the ball as Jake Plummer threw a critical interception with under a minute left in the 2nd half. Plummer was picked off by Ty Law only five yards out of the Kansas City end zone.
"I just read the route," said Law. "We saw that play on film many times and when I saw the route, I knew where the ball was going to be."
Kennison was not done in the 2nd half as he caught one from 18 yards out and after a 2 yard plunge for Larry Johnson, the Chiefs had put the game away.
The Broncos did score however, as Jake Plummer scrambled from a yard out. Plummer did alot of running on the day as he collected 84 yards on 13 scrambles.
"He isn't Mike Vick out there, but he can move," said Kansas City defender Kendrell Bell about the snake.
Jason Elam also added a meaningless field goal from 53 yards out with under a minute left in the contest to give the final score of 28-10.
Besides the loss, the biggest story out of Denver was the appearance of a rookie quarter back. With the game way out of hand, Mike Shanahan decided to pull his starter and give a rookie a chance. The only problem was this rookie was not the one expected. Instead of sending first round pick Jay Cutler out, Shanahan went with new QB Adrian McPherson to finish off the game. The decision was greeted with a course of boo's from the remaining Denver faithful. However, four plays later, McPherson was being helped off the field with what the Broncos said was a high body injury that would only keep him sidelined for the first two days of practice this week.
"It's funny, if that would have been Jay in there hurt, you guys would have ripped be apart," Shanahan said to media in the post game press conference. "The fact is, Jay is not ready for this game yet, I am not about to put in a guy in a situation like that who has no idea what this game is like. The thing about Adrian is, he's got a little more experience, he's played in the AFL and did very well there. I've heard so many things about how athletic this guy is, I just wanted to see what he could do."
The Broncos will now try to put this loss behind them as they play at New England next week in a rematch of last years playoff win for Denver.

Cutler Leads Broncos in Last Minute Heroics

              Foxboro, MASS. -

There's only one place a sane human being would sit for almost three hours in rainy, windy and cold conditions... A football game. This was the scene as the Denver Broncos took on the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium Sunday night on NBC. The story of the game was at quarterback as the Pats leader, Tom Brady, was sidelined last week for five weeks with a broken tailbone. This prompted coach Bill Belichick to start third year quarterback Craig Krenzel against Denver in a critical game as the Patriots were searching for their first win of the year. Krenzel, out of Ohio State, played decently, but it was another back up, Jay Cutler, who ended up the hero on the day. Cutler came in for an injured Plummer half way through the fourth quarter and ended up throwing the game winning touchdown to Rod Smith to give the Broncos the win.
Half way through the third, down six and at their own 15 yard line, Jake Plummer on third down decided to try to gain the yardage on his feet. Instead, Plummer landed on his back and wouldn't get up for the next five minutes. After sharing his displeasure with the media about Coach Shanahan's move last week, putting in Adrian McPherson late in the game, Cutler now had a chance to prove he is the next Denver star at quarterback. On his first drive, from his own fourteen yard line, Cutler didn't produce a long drive and ended up turning the ball over on downs with under two minutes to go. However, thanks to back up fullback Heath Evans' fumble one play later, Denver had the ball back and was ready to strike. Cutler found veteran and go to guy Rod Smith on what seemed to be a broken play for a 54 yard game winning touchdown.
"I saw that the defenders were pretty much covering all of us, so I broke off my curl route into a fly," said Smith about his route. "It wasn't planned, but I knew Jay would see and go to me."
              And that he did.
Before all this madness, New England seemed to be controlling the game, even though they weren't playing particularly well. Ten of their first thirteen points came off Denver turnovers. First, Plummer threw an interception right to the hands of James Sanders on his first attempt of the day to set up a 45 yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal. Gostkowski then hit another field goal to end a 81 yard drive to put New England up 6-0.
Continuing his problems holding onto the ball, Tatum Bell fumbled on his own 24 yard line which set up a Corey Dillion 23 yard scamper into the end zone to give his team a 13-0 lead.
"I don't know what we're going to have to do with this guy to make him learn how to carry the ball safely," said Denver Coach Shanahan about Bell's recent case of "fumbleitis".
Denver then cut into the lead with former Subway sandwich artist, David Kircus, as he caught a seven yard pass from Plummer to make the half time score 13-7.
Denver's kicker Jason Elam hit two field goals in the third to tie the game up, but in the fourth, Patriots kicker Stephen Gostkowski got his turn and hit two field goals of his own to give the Pats a six point lead.
Minutes later, Cutler found Smith for the winning touchdown to make the game 20-19 as Denver moved to 2-1 and the Patriots fell to 0-3.
"It's a real tough loss to take," said New England wide receiver Troy Brown. "We are defiantly not a 0-3 team, and if we want to have any chance at making this season respectable, we need to shape up."
After the game, Denver's medical staff told the media that Plummer would likely be out for at least ten weeks with a dislocated shoulder. This may be Jay Cutlers time to take over the starting job behind center for good.
"It's a hard pill to swallow," said Plummer with a contraption on his right shoulder. "To have most of your season end just like that... it's just real hard."
"We will be going with Jay from now on," said Coach Shanahan at his post-game press conference. "At this point, the only way we will sign another quarterback is if they tell us in a few weeks that Jake is done for the year."
With a new rookie now leading the Denver squad, it's a good thing that the Broncos are going into a bye week. Their next action will take place in two weeks against the Baltimore Ravens (1-2) at home in Jay Cutlers first start as an NFL quarterback. Bronco nation will now rest up for a week as it will prepare for 13 more weeks of NFL mayhem.

                College Report

LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell is finally getting some national attention. The junior has led his #3 ranked Tigers to a 4-0 record with a big win against now #9 Auburn. Russell has thrown for 13 touchdowns on the year with 894 yards to his name.

Ohio State's Troy Smith is looking like the front runner for the Heisman early on. This senior quarterback has thrown for 888 yards, rushed for 320 and has scored 14 total touchdowns as he has kept his Buckeyes undefeated and ranked #1.

Nebraska's senior quarterback Zac Taylor is looking sharp early on, but many NFL scouts do not think he will be an early pick. Despite that, Taylor has thrown for 964 yards, 11 touchdowns and is yet to throw an interception. He also holds the third highest QB rating in the NCAA at 176.9. Nebraska is 3-1, their only loss was at USC.

Virginia's All ACC corner Marcus Hamilton has been a stud so far this season intercepting three balls and making 13 tackles. This has been all for not however as the Cavaliers are struggling at 1-3.

                Mid-Major Report

Although he may not even get drafted next year, BYU senior quarterback Jason Beck is lighting up the Mountain West. Beck has 1339 yards and 15 touchdowns as BYU currently sits at 2-2.

Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb is living up to his hype so far. Sitting at 3-1, the senior Kolb has thrown for 846 yards and 11 touchdowns. His only downfall is the 7 interceptions he has thrown so far. Kolb and Houston will get a real test next week when they take on #11 Miami.

                  Broncos Camp Quiet During Bye

                  Denver, CO -

It seemed like the last second effort in New England took a lot out of the Broncos players and staff as the bye week seemed way quieter then usual. Coach Mike Shanahan gave the players the business week off as the Broncos were back to work on Saturday, lifting weights mainly.
"I let them go back to their families because really at this point we don't need to be bashing heads for an extra week," said Coach Shanahan. "I let the guys pretty much take the week off of football, but we made it very clear that they were to continue to lift and stay in good shape."
The big concern around Bronco HQ was the condition of starting quarterback Jake Plummer. Plummer flew back to his family in Arizona and saw a specialist who told him that it would take another month and a half before he could start to use his throwing arm in any sort of physical activity.
"It's football," said Plummer. "These sort of things happen in football."
Now all eyes turn to rookie Jay Cutler, who has been chomping at the bit to get in from the start of the season.
"I know that this is my chance to show them what I have learned and that I can compete at an NFL level," said Cutler to the media. "Jake has taught me a lot and I will continue to talk to him probably every day for advice."
"The job is still Jake's, " said Shanahan. "If he comes back and they tell me he is ready to go, 100%, the job is his when he comes back."
The Broncos will now prepare for their week five opponent, the Baltimore Ravens (1-3). Jamal Lewis has been rushing well so far with 406 yards and 4 touchdowns. Also, in what has become a little bit of a quarterback conterversy, Steve McNair will get the start over Kyle Boller next Sunday. It should be a good game and an indication on where the Denver season will go with the rookie at the helm.

                    College Report

Drew Tate played a huge role in allowing his Iowa club to upset #1 ranked Ohio State. The senior quarterback threw for 306 yards and scored 3 total touchdowns.

Redshirt sophomore Arian Foster has allowed Tennessee to move up to #13 in the top 25. Foster has rushed for 799 yards on 107 carries and has scored nine times on the ground.

Kenneth Dardy has been impressive for Alabama. Scoring nine times on 784 rushing yards, the senior back has allowed Alabama to go 4-1 so far on the year, their only loss last week to #4 Florida.

Not only does LSU have a quality quarterback, but Alley Broussard is providing a great ground game as well. Rushing for 785 yards on 102 attempts, Broussard will have to be sharp as LSU takes on USC next week.

P.J. Hill may not be drafted next year, but the freshman for Wisconsin leads the NCAA with 817 yards and has scored 7 touchdowns. Wisconsin's only loss on the year is to #12 Michigan.

                    Mid-Major Report

San Diego State junior running back Lynell Hamilton can do it all. Rushing for 297 yards on 44 carries so far, the junior also also caught 11 passes for 308 yards. His six total touchdowns has helped the Aztecs to get wins over Utah and San Jose State.

Junior Kalvin McRae has ran well for Ohio so far this season. 789 yards on 128 attempts and 8 touchdowns are not bad numbers and along with that, his Bobcats are 4-1.

                      Cutler Chokes

                      Denver, CO -

Where are the critics of Mike Shanahan now? After choosing to stick with the current starter Jake Plummer, Shanahan was met with widespread criticism from the local and in some cases the national media. After Sunday's performance however, Shanahan looks like a genius as Jay Cutler looked like a confused rookie and was finally pulled in a 30-17 loss to Baltimore on Monday night.
"Jay looked like a guy who had never played NFL football before," said Shanahan to the media afterwards. "I really don't know where we are going to go from here."
Shanahan looked tired and stunned and he had the right to be. Cutler only completed 7 of 26 attempts through the air which made it easy for Baltimore to focus and stop the run. In the fourth, coach Shanahan finally decided enough was enough and the Denver crowd saw third stringer Adrian McPherson once again, this time to cheers not jeers.
The game started off on a good note as Champ Bailey recovered a fumble and ran it back 52 yards for a touchdown. Everything looked fine until the red challenge flag came flying from the Baltimore sideline. Even with the challenge, the play looked fine, but head referee Pete Morelli reversed the play. This even caused CBS color man Solomon Wilcots to state, "Why do they have replay if they can't get it right there." Nevertheless, the Ravens got away with a break and took advantage in the second as Steve McNair found Mark Clayton for the major.
Three field goals followed before the half as Denver's Jason Elam hit one from 44 yards out and Matt Stover was good from 30 and 39.
With Cutler at only 45 yards of offense through two quarters, Mike Bell had to take charge. Spelling in for Tatum, Mike found a huge hole and turned out a 37 yard touchdown to make the score 13-10, bringing the Broncos within a field goal.
Bell wasn't to be outdone however as Baltimore showed they too could run the ball. First former Bronco Mike Anderson stuck it to his old team and scored from 4 yards out. Then, in the depths of their own zone, Jamal Lewis scampered for 96 yards and yet another Ravens touchdown to put them up 27-10 and the game out of reach.
Adrian McPherson got the call from Shanahan at the start of the fourth and put up one more score. McPherson found Brandon Marshall for a 39 yard touchdown, but it wasn't enough as the Broncos lost 30-17.
"It was a horrible ball game," said safety John Lynch. "That's the only word I can think of for it, horrible."
Quarterback Jay Cutler did not meet the media to comment about his performance.
Denver will stay at home and hopefully improve on their 2-2 record against their arch rival, the Oakland Raiders.

You should beat Oakland in your next game to go over .500. Also, Cutler needs to have a way better game than the last one.

Yea, I don't know if it was the Ravens secondary, but he was horrible.

Turnovers and Field Position Give Broncos Much Needed Win

                              Denver, CO -

There is one major rule in orange crush land: Do Not Lose to the Oakland Raiders! Well, even though it was ugly, Denver and Jay Cutler got the victory to move above the .500 mark. The Broncos were outplayed by the Raiders all day long, but four turnovers which led to 17 points allowed Denver to win 20-3. Also, Oakland spent most of their Sunday night starting drives within their 25 yard line. Not being able to string enough first downs together, Oakland could not produce enough offense to avoid dropping to 0-5.
Jay Cutler still didn't look well at all Sunday being sacked a total of 5 times because he was unable to unload the ball quick enough in certain situations. Cutler did however finish the game this time around, despite only completing nine passes.
"You know, it is frustrating," said first year Bronco Jevon Walker who had one reception. "Yes we won, but I mean I am a receiver. I want the ball. I am not trying to diss Jay here, I just wish we could be a little more productive in our passing attack. It's not just the QB, it's all of us."
Despite the passing game, Denver got a good showing out of their running game as Tatum Bell picked up his second 100 yard game of the year and Mike Bell carried the ball 10 times, more then any other time this year.
"I really wanted to take some of the stress off Tatum," said Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan. "We have two good backs, so I really wanted to start to get Mike into the game."
Another note on the game was that Darrent Williams took over for Domonique Foxworth at second corner and played great compared to last week when Foxwoth was beat deep three times against the Ravens.
On the other corner, Champ Bailey played his best game of the year, limiting Randy Moss to just one reception of only 5 yards.
The scoring started Sunday night in the first quarter as Tatum Bell punched in a three yard touchdown and Jason Elam added a 49 yard field goal. Both scores came off turnovers.
Despite being downgraded, Foxworth picked off an Aaron Brooks pass and ran it back 53 yards for the score. Both Sebastian Janikowski and Jason Elam traded field goals for the final scores.
During the game, Oakland quarterback Aaron Brooks was shaken up in the third and left the game for a few plays. Andrew Walter then came into the game and found Jerry Porter for a 59 yard reception. The play led to the only Raider points.
Denver will now travel to Cleveland for a game against the Browns as they try to string a few wins together before they play two tough games against the Colts and Steelers.
