Ducks have high hopes with high powered offense

EUGENE, OR - Oregon's problem in football in recent years has been that the defense has been lax while the offense has been lights out.

This year in basketball could be the same way.

That's not to say the Ducks are bad on defense, but the strength of the team definitely is in their ability to put points on the board. And in the Pac-10, which looks to be one of the nation's strongest conferences this year, offense will be essential.

Since winning the Pac-10 tournament in 2002-2003, the Ducks have been in a steady decline, posting records of 18-13 in 2003-2004, 14-13 in 2004-2005, and bottoming out at 15-18 last season, Over those three years, Oregon's Pac-10 record has been 25-34 (including Pac-10 Tournament games).

This year has all the makings to be different however, as Ernie Kent looks to avoid the hotseat in Eugene by taking the Ducks back to the NCAA Tournament.

      Re: Oregon Ducks (CH 2K7)

      2006-2007 Season Preview

      1. Florida Gators
The defending champions return all five of their starters, making them the obvious #1 team to start the year. With Noah and Horford inside, Humphrey and Green outside, and Corey Brewer's slashing, the Gators should run away with the SEC and be the favorites to repeat headed into March.

      2. North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels were one of the nation's hottest teams headed into March last season, but their youth and inexperience tripped them up, and cinderella George Mason knocked them out. Now star Tyler Hansbrough is a year older, but once again freshmen will be key to UNC's success, as HS All-Americans Brandan Wright and Ty Lawson will be inserted into the starting lineup. The youth is still there, but UNC is too talented not to go far.

      3. Ohio State Buckeyes
Big Ten Player of the Year Terrence Dials is gone, but Thad Matta's "Thad Five" recruiting class instantly makes the Buckeyes the team to beat in the Big Ten. The monstrous freshman center Greg Oden is obviously the headliner, but Daequan Cook and Mike Conley add even more sharp shooting to a team that already can shoot the lights out from three.

      4. Kansas Jayhawks
Bill Self's Jayhawks are sort of like the Tar Heels of the Big 12. They caught fire at the end of last season, blowing Texas out in the Big 12 Tournament Final, only to flame out early in the Big Dance. Now all their youngsters are older, and in what appears to be a down year for the Big 12, the Jayhawks could be looking at a #1 seed in March Madness.

      5. Arizona Wildcats
Lute Olson's Wildcats took a tumble last year, but those struggles should pay off this year. Four starters return, and add freshman sensation Chase Budinger to the mix, and you have a team that can challenge UCLA for Pac-10 dominance. It all depends on PG Mustafa Shakur.

      6. UCLA Bruins
Last season's national runners-up lost their star point guard Jordan Farmar to the draft, so one would assume they'd take a step back. Wrong. Darren Collison is probably just as gifted as Farmar, and any deficiencies he has he makes up for with his blazing speed. Arron Afflalo is probably the Pac-10's best player, and the defense Ben Howland encourages guarantees the Bruins will not surrender the conference without a fight.

      7. Syracuse Orange
The heroics of Gerry McNamara from last year's Big East Tournament snuck the Orange into the tourney, but they lost right away. McNamara is gone, but the cupboard is not bare for Jim Boeheim. Demetris Nichols and Terence Roberts provide a potent 1-2 punch that should be good enough in a down year for one of college basketball's typically elite conferences.

      8. LSU Tigers
Last year's magical run to the Final Four probably won't be repeated, but LSU is still a big player in the SEC. The emphasis is on big, because with the departure of freak/athlete Tyrus Thomas, the load will fall on the gigantic shoulders of Junior C Glen Davis to spark the offense.

      9. Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M looks out of place in the top 10 due to their lack of tradition in basketball, but they are no doubt worthy of the praise they are getting. Billy Gillispie is one of college basketball's brightest young minds, and with their assassin Acie Law at point, and a solid supporting cast, the Aggies will be definite challengers to Kansas in the Big 12.

      10. Duke Blue Devils
Duke is probably here based on reputation alone, due to the loss of JJ Redick and Shelden Williams. But you can never count out Mike Krzyzewski's team, and if PG Greg Paulus can improve, combined with Josh McRoberts, the Blue Devils might, as unbelievable as it sounds, sneak up on people in the ACC.
