Bringing a winner back to Washington... The Lint way... MLB 2K7

I know it's a few days early, but I'm going to start my franchise a slight bit early!

    [Intro]

A TV in the background of David Lint's apartment in Midlothian, Virginia is just about to get to the sports portion of the local 11 o'clock news. Lint a recent graduate of Lynchburg College is currently unemployed as he looks for a career to pursue.

**Newscaster** "Today in a shocking move the Washington Nationals have fired GM Jim Bowden."

David- "Finally, that guy was such a hack... I could run that team and turn them into a winner in no time flat."

Fast forward a few weeks later and David is sitting in a room full of press about to be introduced as the new general manager of the Washington Nationals by principle owner Mark Lerner. Lerner then steps to the mic.

Lerner- "I'd like to welcome the members of the media here today where I would like to introduce you, and the rest of the Nationals fan base to our new GM David Lint. This young man is a recent graduate of Lynchburg College and I am certain he can lead us to the promise land. I looked far and wide in my search to find our new GM, and David just stood out more than any of our other picks. Trust me when I say we will be in capable hands. Now I want to open up the floor to the media to ask questions for me, and then after that David will speak and unveil his plan for the team and whatever else he wants to speak about."

Reporter- "Mr. Lerner, where did you find Mr. Lint? He looks really young, and quite frankly none of us in this room have ever heard of him."

Lerner- "Funny story actually, I first met David about a week ago, we shared a cab together and I had this rubik's cube that I had been fiddling with for the longest time. David told me he could solve it before our cab ride ended. 'I said you're on!' And sure enough the kid knocked out in no time flat. Quite frankly I was blown away! So I picked his brain a bit about our team and his knowledge of baseball and I was so impressed that I knew David had to be our next GM."

Reporter- "Are you saying you hired Mr. Lint based on the completion of a rubik's cube?"

Lerner- "Well I mean, he knows stuff about baseball as well. I think..."

    Reporter- "..."

Lerner- "Hmm, well ok, it seems my portion of this press conference is over... Now to turn it over to our new general manager... David Lint!"

(Little to no applause is heard as the press core sits dumbfounded over the news they have just heard)

Lint- "Hello, my name is David Lint, and I am here to turn this franchise, the Washington Nationals, into a powerhouse. I plan to do so, this year. I know no one knows me in this room, and you have all the reason in the world to be skeptical about me, but I promise the Nationals are in capable hands. I know baseball, and I know to create a winner. That's my plan here, I expect, no demand that this team makes the playoffs this year. We have a great manager in Manny Acta, a solid base of young players anchored by Ryan Zimmerman, and I think if we can prove ourself to be winners our fans will show just how great they can be. I'm sure this is shocking to most of you, so I'm going to open the floor to any questions you guys may have... let's try to keep it baseball only as much as possible... Thanks."

Reporter- "David, even you have to admit this is a shock; But since you are the new GM, why don't you give us a little background on yourself."

David- "Sure, I'm 21, I'm a recent graduate of Lynchburg College as Mr. Lerner just pointed out, and I love baseball."

    Reporter- "You're 21???"

David- "Yes... I hope that's not a problem."

    Reporter- "...."

David- "Look, I know I'm young, the youngest Gm in MLB history, and yes I was hired based off my rubik's cube abilities, but trust me when I tell you I can run this team, and I can do it well. Next question please, and lets keep it baseball related."

Reporter- "Yes Rick Black, of the Washington Nationals fansite.. Can you tell us your plan for the team this year, and what you expect from the team this year?"

David- "Nice to meet you Rick, sure I'd love to tell you... Right now we're looking at about nine players coming in with a guarantee to make this team. The nine are as follows...

    Nook Logan
    Alex Escobar
    Ryan Church
    Ryan Zimmerman
    Ryan Wagner
    Billy Traber
    Saul Rivera
    Michael O'Conner
    Emiliano Fruto

I'm not saying that the sixteen not on this list won't be on the team come opening day, but for now, those nine are the only promised a spot on the club."

Reporter- "I can't help but notice that many top players such as Nick Johnson, John Patterson and Chad Cordero aren't on the list... was that just a misquote on your part? Or are these guys not promised roster spots with the team?"

David- "If they're not on the list, they're not promised roster spots... It's not because I think they're bad players. Just the opposite really, but I don't want to give away our plans just yet. But trust me when I say I have a master plan, and I'll unveil it in the next few days."

Reporter- "So you're saying the tops guys should be expected to be traded?"

David- "I didn't say that; all I can say at this time is they are not promised roster spots with the team this year."

Reporter- "Have you talked to the players yet?"

David- "Yes, they seem very eager to start the year, just as I am. That's all the time I have for today, but plan on coming back the next couple of days... Roster changes are coming, and I think you guys are going to like it. Thank you, and I'll see everyone soon."

How could Austin Kearns not be on your "list"?

        "Changes have been made!"

        Washington, D.C., 2/27/07

Washington Nationals GM David Lint promised reporters that changes would be made, and boy he wasn't lying. In a shocking reveal, Lint has completely changed the make up of the Nationals team by making 7 trades and bringing in 3 free agents. In total, the Nationals have 17 new players on their roster this year! To break down the trades, here's Washington's beat writer, and former host of Nick in the afternoon, Stick Stickly!

Stick: Folks I might be a popsicle with eyes glued on-to my body, but even I can see GM David Lint has a plan, and apparently that plan is replacing the whole roster with players he feels can help the Nationals win NOW! But I'm not here to pontificate on Lint, I'm here to break down the trades for you eager fans!

RP Jon Rauch was traded to San Diego for RP Andrew Brown (following the trade, Lint proclaimed Brown his teams closer, and savior of Washington baseball... obviously with Chad Cordero still on the team something was up... and indeed was there!)

RP Chad Cordero and SP Michael O'Connor were traded to Florida for SP Anibal Sanchez and SP Scott Olsen (Well that takes care of Cordero, but was about O'Connor, who just a week ago was promised a roster spot? "I don't recall saying his name, and I don't like your tone of voice Stick" said a flustered Lint who had obviously been caught in a lie.)

1B Nick Johnson traded to Tampa Bay for OF Johnny Gomes. ("Johnny is going to be the power supply for our offense, so even though we had to give away a great player in Nick to get him, we, meaning I, thought it was a necessary step" said dictator, err, I mean GM Lint.)

SS Felipe Lopez, OF Austin Kearns, RP Luis Ayala were traded to Kansas City for SP Brian Bannister, 3B/OF Mark Teahen, and C John Buck. (The GM had this to say, "Brian is hopefully going to be the ace of our staff, and with Mark and John we think we have two very young players that can be cornerstones of this team for a very long time." Lint also went on to say that this was just the beginning of the trading spree, and everyone should be ready for some surprises.)

SS Cristian Guzman was traded to Colorado for SS Clint Barmes. (Lint told reporters that Barmes was taking over the top spot in the Washington line-up, and he couldn't be happier to get rid of the trash that was Guzman.)

In a massive deal, RP Ray King, SP John Patterson, OF Dmitri Young, and CF Terry Reese were shipped to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for RP Tony Sipp, SP Adam Miller, and RP Tom Mastny. ("We, once again meaning I, love Adam Miller, and giving away John was a necessary evil to picking him up." Said a boastful Lint.

In the final bit of trading the Nats pulled off, C Brian Schneider, SP Jerome Williams, and SP Shawn Hill were traded to the Baltimore Orioles for 1B Terry Tiffee, and SP Hayden Penn. ("This was a salary move more than anything, and we liked the potential in Hayden" said Lint, who seemed more like a kid in a candy store than a MLB GM at the press conference.

In other news, the Nationals signed IF Fernando Tatis, SP Doug Waechter, SP Mike Wood, and RP Phillip Humber.

After the dust was cleared, Lint gave a power point presentation on what to expect from the Nats line-up, starting rotation and bullpen this coming season, they are as follows.

        Batting order

        1- Clint Barmes- SS
        2- Ryan Church- CF
        3- Ryan Zimmerman- 3rd
        4- Mark Teahan- RF
        5- Jonny Gomes- LF
        6- Terry Tiffee- 1B
        7- John Buck- C
        8- Kory Casto- 2B
        9- Pitcher

        Bench

        C- Robert Fick
        IF- Fernando Tatis
        IF- Bernie Castro
        OF- Chris Snelling
        OF- Nook Logan

        Starting Rotation

        Brian Bannister
        Scott Olsen
        Adam Miller
        Anibal Sanchez
        Mike Wood

        Bullpen

        CL- Andrew Brown
        SU- Tony Sipp
        MRP- Tom Mastny
        MRP- Saul Rivera
        MRP- Ryan Wagner
        LRP- Billy Traber
        LRP- Emiliano Fruto

Lint offered no more information on the team, other than telling the media he would update everyone on the team on a weekly basis... and that the fans should expect an update after their first home stand is over... (April 8th against Arizona)

              "THE NATS ARE HOT FIYAH!"

Something must be in the water around Washington D.C., this year, because the Nats have come out of the gates on fire! And when we say on fire, we really mean on FIYAH! The Nats opened the year with nine straight wins including 73 straight innings of shutout ball to open up the 2007 campaign. Spearheaded by ace of staff Brian Bannister, the Nationals were nearly un-hittable in their first ten games. Of those ten games, four were complete game shut outs, and two were one hitters! Bannister as previously mentioned had such a great week, he was recognized as pitcher of the week for the first week of the season!

On offense, Jonny Gomes and Clint Barmes have brought the whooping sticks as both have belted four home runs with seven batted in a piece. Ryan Zimmerman has been nothing short of stellar in his third year, compiling an average over .300 with six doubles in a short time frame.

Sadly the Nats lost their bid to push their win streak to 10 games as CL Andrew Brown gave up a two out three run home run in the bottom of the ninth to take the first loss of the season.

Injuries have also struck the Nationals as well this year... Adam Miller a prized rookie SP, was hit in the head and suffered a concussion taking him out of action for over two weeks, and as of writing Bannister has just suffered leg cramps ending his day after two pitches in the first inning against the Mets in Shea.

Come back soon for stat updates, wacky stories and more that only can be found at your 2007 home of Washington Nationals baseball, Operation Sports.com!

Whatever Giggas, I told you how I went crazy on PRO with the 73 straight innings... you'll be happy to know I'm giving up quite a few more runs on all-star.
