The Road to the Show: The Life of a SP.

OOC: The following is a fully fictionalized account of the career of a MiLB player looking to make the Major Leagues. His name is Kevin Walsh, a 23-yr old SP out of the University of Richmond, and this story is told through his own eyes.

    February 15th, 2007

Hey what's up guys, my name is Kevin Walsh I am a SP in the Texas Rangers organization, I am 23-yr old, and proudly single. So your probably wondering about my career so far. Well here is how it went, I played ultra-competitively throughout my young childhood, but then abruptly quit after 8th grade and transitioned into Ice Hockey where I learned to become a goalie, and in my senior year of high school I really blossmed, I was not only a state champion but also an All-Star, and over my final 10 games I posted the lowest GAA in the state. After graduation I went off to the University of Richmond, and played a little club ACHA hockey in the winter, it was a blast and I played for two years, but every spring I joined the club baseball team.

That experience was interesting I hadn't played in 5 years, but I was decent and at the plate I did okay. However it was in my sophomore year when I began pitching for the team. I found out really quickly that I really loved pitching and that I still had amazing control, but really only threw fastballs (not that fast) and a change. Needless to say as a junior I walked on the the Spiders D1 team. That year I learned how to pitch properly, and actually got into 3 games, going 4 innings allowing 7 hits and 3 ER, striking out no one, and walking 1. Overall though I was pleased. As a senior I finally made the team full-time, and ultimately became a really solid pitcher for the team going 3-1 in 41 innings, allowing only 16 ER and scattering 53 hits. The most impressive thing was the 17 K's and only 14 BB's. I was really pleased and on May 12th 2006 I graduated with a degree in business. I was all set to move to Cherry Hill, NJ and take a desk job with a company who recruited me with a nice $50,000 offer. Then my cell rang, it was the coach at Richmond who was calling to inform me that three major league organizations had expressed interest in me. The Atlanta Braves, the Tampa Rays, and my beloved Texas Rangers. I fielded all the offers, and ultimately moved to Surprise, AZ and joined the Texas Rangers. My first two weeks were spent dominating the AZL so I was reassigned on June 24, 2006 to the Low-A Clinton Lumberkings, where I was decently successful and on August 15th, 2006 I was promoted again to the Bakersfield Blaze. In Bakersfield I made 3 appearances, 2 starts, and some how coupled with junkballer Danny Ray Herrera managed to dominate the Cali League. I pitched 14 innings allowing only 3 ER's striking out 6 walking only 2 and allowing only 8 hits. It was so successful the team has invited me to major league camp this year as a Non-Roster Invitee. So with that I got to camp yesterday and found my beautiful gear hanging right next to the other NRI's. I am currently sitting here in my #89 jersey, no name on the back. And if all goes well I might be appearing in MLB games in a few weeks.

    Peace,

    Kevin.

Re: The Road to the Show: The Life of a SP.

    March 5th, 2007.

Hey guys what's up, guess what today I made my first appearance. The team opted to start me today in Tucson (2 and a half hours away). The regular 5th starter stated back in Surprise and they brought me to Tucson...SO I played the Rockies at Hi Corbett Field.

Obviously I was nervous as in the first inning I walked Willy Taveres on 4 pitches. Nellie Cruz bailed me out on a GB single gunning Taveres at third. Despite a little bit of nerves I worked out of the first without much of a big deal.

Second inning started real poorly with back to back singles, but Mikey made a sweet play to get the double play and I was doing okay again. Got Josh Fogg to end the inning. And in the third I got to bat...that was interesting. Laird right before me went yard to make it 1-0. Fogg made me look ridicolous on three pitches.

On to the bottom half of the third 1-0 Texas. Again leadoff man reached. I realized at this point that my change and my two-seamer are both basically change-ups. Just with opposite movement. Helton ripped one in Center, and it became first and third one out. Holliday ripped another single scoring one and moving the man to third. Brad Hawpe ripped a double to score two. Making me mince meat. I was struggling to get pitches over, and really struggling mentally. I was just nervous, and under prepared. I proceeded to walk Matsui, and a mound vist ensued. Laird came up and began to just tell jokes, it relaxed me a little but I continued to get beat around the yard. Allowing another 2 runs to score. So that was 5 for the inning, only one out.

As I ride the bus typing this lets just say I learned how to be a stronger man. My final line for the night...YEAH UGLY. 2.2 IP 12 H's (YEAH I WAS GETTING ROCKED, 1 BB, 0K's, and 7 ER/7 R (all in the third). We lost 7-1, and on the ride home the guys were silent around me. Hopefully I can make it up to them soon. Coach told me I was successful at getting GB's and those will turn into outs, but of the 17 goals he set aside for me I only accomplished 9. So I have a lot of work to do.

So we are now 3 and 2 for the spring.

Peace, and wish for a better game next time out eh.

      Surprise, AZ

      Top of the 14th,

I made my first appearance in the stunning Surprise Stadium today, I entered as a JIC (Just in Case player) in the Top of the 14th. I got the first two outs real quick, but then I allowed a single, walked Derrek Lee, and then I had a perfect slow roller to Short, and it was booted. The inning continues, bases loaded, 2 outs. Hank Blalock bailed me out BIG TIME, and I was pumped up. Even better I went back out there for the 15th. Again I got out of the inning unscathed, one hit allowed, but nothing major. In the bottom of the 15th we failed to score...SO.

Out there I went for my 3rd inning of work, In this inning I got my first strike out getting Ryan Theriot to chase one out of the zone. 1-2-3 inning, I am still rolling along. Too bad we couldn't end it. The game continued in the the 17th, out there I go again. I got the first guy, then I threw the perfect 3-2 pitch froze the batter, and the blue called it a ball...ARGH, so painful. Shattered a bat, then the sprayed a single. So it was first and second with two outs. I got ahead of the batter 1-2, but he was patient and took two near misses to get the count to full. My pitch was ripped...right at a guy thankfullly inning over. Even better Ian Kinsler ripped a walk-off shot to win the game. Thank god, in 17 innings we won 4-3. My final line was great,

4 IP 3 Hits 2 BB 1 K 0ER! Pushing my record to 1-1, and lowering the ERA to 9.45.

      March 10th, 2007.

      Scottsdale, AZ

I am tired from yesterdays game, but on the way to Scottsdale Ron Washington and Mark Connor told me that Bruce Chen had left the team that morning with personal issues, as such they decided that I would throw again in order to keep me fresh. It was a little odd but of course I am up for it.

The game got off to a terrible start for me on the mound. First pitch, RIPPED, way outta here. Next batter Randy Winn singled, and then coach came out to check on me, and said my mechanics were off. So we reported to the umpire that I was injured and unable to continue. So the team made a pitching change. And we held on to the 3-1 first inning lead. And to make it even weirder because I left with a lead in the first, and I left with an injury I was credited with the win.

THAT's all for now, CJ, Josh, Wes, and I are going out tonight, gonna try to see The 300.

      MARCH 15th, 2007

      Tucson, AZ

Today I made my second trip to Tucson again traveling the 3 hours instead of some of the regulars to play against the D'Backs. I had a real productive outing, I went 0-1 batting, but had a sac bunt. On the mound, I went a solid 3.2 IP I did allow 7 hits, and 3 ER/R but I walked only one, and struck out 2. Overall I say this was my second best outing. Even scary is that Eric Gagne recorded his 8th save...YEAH 8...in spring. It doesn't hurt that TEX ripped his 6th HR today as well. We are now a spring best 11-4.

      MARCH 19th, 2007

      OFF DAY

      Surprise, AZ

Today was the only day off we have all spring so I took advantage of and just kinda relaxed around the condo I am sharing with CJ, and Josh (wilson and rupe).
We rode around in CJ's Red F-150, and crusied the Bell Road (managing to hit every stop light.) Either way, we ultimately went to Chipotle and had a decent burrito, before stopping by Barnes and Noble to pick up some reading material. I should be appearing next on the 20th, at Ho Ho Kam Park in Mesa, AZ to play the Cubs.

      March 20th, 2007

      Mesa, AZ

Hey guys I don't have much time to type today, BUT...I Got rocked early. DeRosa and Lee went yard in the first. So it was 3-0 in the first. All in all I was just umm sucking. Thankfully my night got a little better although we lost 5-3, pushing my record to 2-2...my final line was decent, 4 IP 8 H's 3 ER 1 BB 2 K's.

        SURPRISE, AZ

        March 26, 2007

Took to the hill for my second to last spring start, against the M's. Well the home fans who had been doubting me might wanna stop, I lit them up today. AMAZING outing for me against the M's.

I went 5 IP allowed only 2 hits, no runs, no walks, and I even got myself a K...and another win (3-2.) ERA is down to 6.52. I will be pitching in the final spring game of the year, at the Ballpark in Arlington on the 31st. SO I AM REALLY EXCITED about that.

Also I am scheduled to throw a 2 inning simulated game on the 29th against the Single-A team, that should be productive.

        APRIL 1st, 2007

        Arlington, TX

I had a great outing in beautiful Arlington yesterday. I went 4.1 IP spreading 5 Hits, only allowing a massive Bill Hall HR...But here is the most important thing, WHERE I AM PACKING TO GO? Frisco or perhaps Oklahoma City...or maybe ARLINGTON? Well I am using my business degree to my advantage and I am my own agent. So today I wait for my assignment... WELL heres the thing you are all waiting for. I was officially offered a package today worth $68,750 for the season. For a single guy that works. I gladly accepted. I am heading to AA Frisco, AND I Couldn't be more excited. My uncle and his family live literally 5 minutes from the stunning Dr. Pepper/7-Up Ballpark. So I am moving in with them for the season and I am 100% excited about that. There pad is kinda small for the 5 of us, plus the 4 cats, and 2 dogs, but that's all good, I am excited. All my stuff was shipped to the ballpark, and my uncle has loaned me his Ford Explorer (1998 edition) to use til I get settled.

Perhaps the coolest part of the experience other than making great friends is that I earned the respect of the manager who called to say he was proud of my showing, and cannot wait til I make it big. Also I just got off the phone with Kenny Lofton who called to say he is looking forward to seeing me again later this year...Let's hope that's true. I will be the #2 Starter in Frisco, behind a guy you might no about, Edinson Volquez, he is a two year mlb pitcher and it'll be great to learn from him...

SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO... PEACE, and HERE COMES THE 2007 SEASON...

          April 6th, 2007

          Frisco, TX

Yesterday was my first ever "SEASON" opener. Edinson pitched decently but we couldn't score, and lost 4-0.

I take the bump wearing my beautiful #89 (I opted to keep it after spring) with awesome bright red socks. My entire family flew in and I was excited to pitch in front of them. I started my AA season with a beauty change for a K. That was a great start. Through two I had recorded 3 K's. And we led 2-0, so that was positive. In the third I kept it simple all fastball's and 1 change, and I added another K. In the fourth I struggled badly with my command, and despite this I managed to use the change really effectively and worked out of a two on no out jam with back to back K's and a FB to Left. So on to the fifth, I was exhausted, and I walked the leadoff man, so out came skip and replaced me.

My final line for my debut, 4 IP 4 H's 0/0 ER/R 2 BB 6 K's. I was pleased, and so was the team, but I need to get into and out of the fifth, that was FRUSTRATING. So I plan on going for a huge run tomorrow and the next day, work on my stamina, and just get myself into better shape. All in all I am satisfied. Dave Anderson the manager and Terry Clark the pitching coach were also both satisfied with the performance, though both said they want me to throw fewer pitches per inning, and try to work longer into games.

          North Little Rock, AR

Hey guys, I am on the bus back from Little Rock, I pitched in the first game of the series. All in all its always nice to pitch to Caleb (Keating) as he caught me a little last year in Bakersfield. I am real comfortable throwing to him. The first inning was simple, really quick. But the second I pitched myself into trouble and a bases clearing triple made it 3-2 Frisco. I made it into the fifth again, I got one out quickly, but then it went downhill. I allowed a single, then after a 10 pitch battle the guy ripped the ball to RF, and it was 2nd and 3rd, one out, 4-2 score...We intentionally walked the batter to load the batter. Quick mound visit let everyone no what's happening... Pushed the count full, and I lost him to walk one in... Night over... we lost the game 6-9 and I was charged, with the lost after getting tagged with 3 inhereted runs, and so my final line was awful...

          4.1 IP 5 h's 6/6 R/ER 3 BB 4 K's
          I was at 4 ip 3 hit's 2 R 1 BB 4 K's entering the fifth. So that was rough.

Well we are just pulling into the Comfort Inn here in Springfield for the next series, this will be fun, I love new cities. Hopefully it goes better, i'll be writing about it later.

          April 18th, 2007

Today is an off day but it really is more like a ride the bus home day. I won't actually be home til late tonight and then it's back to the park to get to work. We dropped 3 in a row coming into my start so I knew I had to come out and pitch well. I was perfect through 9 hitters, but the second time through the lineup started with a double...But I got out of it unscathed. Open the fifth with my second hit allowed, another double...make it worse it was to a guy named Forest Crump...YEAH FOREST CRUMP. Then a huge at bat again, 8 pitches, ended it with a K. And once again was removed...but I got the win (2-1 now) and we won 5-1. It was a nice way to end the losing streak, my final line was the best I have had so far...

          4.2 IP 2 H's 0/0 ER 0 BB 6 K's.

            Midland, TX

Hey guys sorry I haven't written in the past month, I have been quite busy pitching...on the road A TON. Of my first 7 starts 4 have been on the road (5 if you count today's). My last 4 starts have been interesting. I pitched against San Antonio in San An, and it went well, I went 5.2 IP spreading 7 hits, walking 1, and I struck out 4. Best of all I didn't allow any runs and got the win. My next outing came in Corpus Christi, I went 5.1 IP allowed only 3 hits, on 1 walk, 2 K's, but a run scored, however I won so I am satisified. Then back in Frisco I faced San Antonio again, and went 4.1 IP allowing 4 hits and getting 6 K's but my pitch count was getting up there so despite 0 ER I was pulled, and I got the win (pushing my record to 5-1).

Most recently on May 8th I pitched at home against Midland...and ERR it was a bad time. I had a solid 3 innings but my control was really off, and then it went down hill. My final line was 3.1 IP 5 Hits, 3 BB, 1 k, 6 ER/R. I got the loss to fall to 5-2, and my era climbed from 2.21, all the way to 3.70. I also allowed my first HR of the season. I am really disappointed in myself because I think I was getting cocky, before the series the Rangers reassigned our closer Tom Waterman and Our CF Ono to Oklahoma City, and sent us OKC's CF Lionel Combs, and there former closer Maurice Blalock. The local papers were saying that I was probably next after the Midland series, but obviously that didn't happen as I am still here. That's ok though I really like the guys, and Terry Clark is a great pitching coach. So far my K/BB ratio is doing great it is at 29 K's and only 10 BB's. Overall i would say I am statisfied with my preformance so far and that I believe I will see a little of Oklahoma City so time this season. Well from Midland, TX I am Kevin Walsh, see ya later.

Also if any of you have a question for me swing it my way.
