Re: Down in The Desert: Bailey4mvp's Diamondbacks

    Roster

When does the future begin for the young Diamondbacks? Maybe it will be 2007
Young, Upton, Drew and Conor Future of Arizona

Chris Young (Center) is one of the many young stars in the desert

    The offence
What a fine young collection of talent the Snakes have. In the outfield, Eric Byrnes, Chris Young and Carlos Quentin should give them good offence and good defence. The defensive improvement of Byrnes over Luis Gonzalez in left, Young over Byrnes in center and Quentin over Shawn Green in right should be considerable. Scott Hairston makes an excellent 4th outfielder, with Byrnes sliding back into center if required. Toiling away in the minors will be hot prospect Carlos Gonzalez and Alex Romero.

Arizona is set for a long time in the outfield.

The infield is similarly set. Chad Tracy at third, Stephen Drew at short, Orlando Hudson at second and Conor Jackson at first, with Chris Synder catching should also provide good offence and good defence. Albert Callaspo backs up the middle infielders and Miguel Montero is the second catcher.

    The rotation

What a difference 8 months makes. As of the All-Star break last year, Arizona had Brandon Webb and not much else in the rotation. Since then, they have added Livan Hernandez, Doug Davis and Randy Johnson in trades. Behind those front four, they have Edgar Gonzalez, Dustin Nippert, Dana Eveland and Micah Owings. Webb is one of the three best starters in the National League, along with Roy Oswalt and Chris Carpenter. Johnson is 43 years old, and coming off an off-season for him. He will probably start the season on the DL after off-season back surgery. He pitched better than his 5.00 ERA would indicate, but there was a red flag or two, between the declining K rate (though it was a still healthy 7.7) and the abysmal performance with runners on. Hernandez seems to take abuse better than just about anybody, and deliver league average pitching year after year. His K rate is however falling slightly each year; it was 5.1 last year at age 31, and that is getting close to the danger zone for a right-handed pitcher without exceptional control.

Old friend Davis continued his 3 year streak of .500 pitching in 2006, but was noticeably less effective than previously in all departments, although he did pitch better than his 4.91 ERA would suggest. Gonzalez seems to have a leg-up on the 5th starter role at this point, and has a reasonable chance to perform decently. Eveland is probably the better choice long-term; he is an extreme ground-ball pitcher, who also struck out more than a batter per inning in triple A at age 22. He may start the season in the pen, as the second lefty there.

    The bullpen
What do you make of Jose Valverde? He will probably be Arizona's closer to start the season. I will tell you what I think. In a fantasy league, he is the one player I would want to get. He posted an ERA of 5.82 in 49 innings last year, so he may come cheap. Here is what I like about him. He pitched much better than his ERA would suggest, with his FIP of 3.28 better capturing his ability to punch out hitters at an almost-Wagnerian pace, while not walking too many. What afflicted him last year was two things: the inability of his defence to turn balls in play into outs and his own uncharacteristic failures with runners on base. Valverde is a fly-ball pitcher, and the Arizona outfield defence should be much, much better this year. I expect a return to 2005 form from him.

Contenders for the other spots in the pen are Brandons Medders and Lyon, Juan Cruz, Jorge Julio, Tony Pena and Doug Slaten. Medders would be my bet for the set-up role, and is at this point not a likely candidate for the Duane Ward comp award. The pen is right now the obvious weakness on the club.

Denver, CO The Arizona Diamondbacks opened up their 2007 season on the road against the Todd Helton led Colorado Rockies. Colorado took the first game of the series 5-1 thanks to strong batting by Todd Helton and a dominant pitching performance from Jeff Francis.

Helton was 3-4 on the day with a round tripper in the bottom of the 8th to seal the Rockies victory. Willy Taveras and Jamey Carroll made some outstanding defensive plays to shut down the D-Backs offense.

Arizona was led by Eric Byrnes who was 2-3 on the day with a RBI in the 7th to drive in the D-Backs only run of the game. Brandon Webb had a sound start to the season striking out 6 batters but it was not enough.

Brad Hawpe is Congratulated After His Game Winning HR

Denver, CO The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped their 2nd game of the season in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Rockies. Arizona led for most of the game but Jose Valverde gave up a 2 out 2 run homer in the bottom of the 9th to Brad Hawpe to give the Rockies the victory.

Colorado started the game with a triple to Willy Taveras and two batters later Matt Holliday singled to drive in Taveras for a 1-0 Rockies lead and it wasn’t until the 3rd inning that the D-Backs got their first hit of the game thanks to a single from Chris Young.

Stephen Drew put the Diamondbacks only runs on the board when he hit a 2 run dinger in the 3rd to give the D-Backs a 2-1 lead that looked very safe with Livan Hernandez on the mound. Hernandez gave up 3 hits in the first 3 innings and then shut down the Rockies offense with 9 straight outs at one point but it was all to no avail in the end.

Matt Holliday led the Rockies going 2-4 on the day with a RBI but the real hero was Brad Hawpe and his bottom of the 9th game winning homer.

                Eric Byrnes Delivers In 9th
                Diamondbacks 3, Nationals 1

Eric Byrnes is Congratulated After Scoring in the 9th.

Washington, D.C: The Diamondbacks finally got the monkey off their back thanks to 2 run 9th inning to steal their first victory of the season 3-1 against the Washington Nationals. Eric Byrnes was the man for the D-Backs in the 9th driving in Jackson on a RBI Double and then hustling around 3rd base to score on RBI single from Chad Tracy to give the Diamondbacks a 2 run buffer.

Nick Johnson was 1-3 with a round tripper in the 4th for the Nationals who seemingly forgot how to hit into gaps late in the game. Jerome Williams was strong in his 7.2 innings of work allowing only 3 hits while striking out 4.

Eric Byrnes went 1-4 with a RBI and a double in the 9th that proved to be the difference in the game. Chad Tracy continued his hot start to the season knocking in his 3rd RBI of the season. Edgar Gonzalez had an outstanding day on the mound striking out 7 batters and allowing only 1 hit but unfortunately he was not credited with the victory.

In a game that can only be called a pitchers dream, Justin Upton and Nick Johnson had 3 hits each with two of Upton’s doubles. Chad Tracy was 1-5 on the day but was a shot it was launching it 350+ yards for the eventual game winner.

Ryan Church had a shocker of a game striking out 5 times and hitting into a double play that killed the Nationals shot of a comeback.

Eric Byrnes Pinch Hit RBI in 9th, Won the Game for the D-Backs.

Washington, D.C: Arizona completed their sweep of the struggling Nationals with a nail biting 3-2 victory thanks to a pinch hit RBI from Eric Byrnes in the 9th inning. Livan Hernandez and Matt Chico both pitched very well but both got no decisions instead it was Tony Pena who got the W for the D-Backs.

Pena was just downright nasty in his first game of the season striking out 8 batters and allowing only 3 hits in 3 innings of work to get the Victory. Chad Tracy was 2-5 on the day with a RBI in the 4th and he also scored in the same inning of a RBI from Chris Young.

Ryan Zimmerman was the shinning light for the struggling Nationals as he blasted his 1st homer of the season 360ft in the 5th to bring in Ryan Church and tie the game up at 2 all. Washington’s bullpen blew their 2nd game in a row to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Bronson Arroyo mowed Down 13 Diamondbacks In the Reds 2-0 Victory.

Phoenix, AZ: The D-Backs played their 1st home game of the season and where riding high after their 4 game sweep of the Washington Nationals but the Cincinnati Reds wrecked the D-Backs hopes of winning their home opener with a 2-0 victory thanks to a pair of homer from Brandon Phillips and some outstanding stuff from Bronson Arroyo on the mound.

Phillips blasted his first homer 386ft in the 1st inning and then topped that with a 387ft blast in the 3rd and that was all the Reds would need as Bronson Arroyo completely shut down the Diamondbacks offense. Arroyo struck out 13 batters and did not allow a hit until the 5th inning.

Arizona stranded 4 runners in scoring position late in the game and where held scoreless for the 1st time this season.

Kyle Lohse mowed Down 8 Diamondbacks In the Reds 1-0 Victory.

Phoenix, AZ: Arizona fell below .500 thanks to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds and starter Kyle Lohse. It is the second game in a row that the D-Backs have failed to bother the scorer after a great outing from their starter.

Alex Gonzalez put the games only run on the board when he blasted a 330ft homer to left field to give Kyle Lohse and the Reds a 1-0 lead, which would be all they needed as Lohse allowed only 4 hits and struck out 8 batters in 8 innings work.

The D-Backs once again failed to provide their starter with any run support and a solid performance from Edgar Gonzalez was wasted. Chris Young and Stephen Drew both had a hit today and that takes them to 10 hits in 9 games.
