    #16
    12/1

    (1-4) Tulane Green Wave @ #16 (6-0) Syracuse Orange
    December 1st, 2007
    Carrier Dome

Would the Orange lose it in the first half to Tulane?

Would the Orange be looking ahead to their showdown with Virginia next week? Certainly they couldn't overlook a pretty talented, experienced Tulane team, right? Or would Devendorf's return be bitter?

In the first 5 minutes of the game, it seemed as though the answer to all those questions was simple: yes. Tulane jumped out to a quick 10 point lead, with Devendorf nowhere in sight on the court. It was obvious his hand injury he had recovered from was still bothering him, and he was a bit squemish about getting into a game so soon. After all, he only had a day of practice before the game, not even.

Syracuse fought back towards the end of the half on the back of Paul Harris. Still, they were down at the break, 40-42.

Coach Boeheim must have said something to fire his youngsters up, and they quickly regained the lead and never looked back, outscoring the Wave by 9 in the second half with a great defensive performance, only allowing Tulane to score 29.

Devendorf didn't do so hot in his return, with only 5 points and an assist. He only played 15 minutes (out of 40), despite Coach Boeheim stating he would play much of the game. Scoop Jardine was the unsung hero of the game, hitting 2 of 3 threes and scoring 8 points in 19 minutes of play.

"We were lucky to come away with this one. For once we lost the rebounding war, didn't pass too well which led to a bunch of turnovers, and didn't play very good defense. Luckily, the Tulane shooters weren't on and we were able to pull out the victory."

    Final: 78-71

    Stats
    Orange, Wave
    Rebounds: 24, 35
    Assists: 14, 16
    Steals: 7, 12
    Blocks: 4, 1
    Turnovers: 20, 19
    3pt: 7/16, 4/19

    Players
Johnny Flynn: 14 points, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers, 2/2 from three, 31 min
Andy Rautins: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 turnovers, 1/4 from three, 24 min
Paul Harris (POTG): 22 points, 3 rebounds, 4 turnovers, 33 min
Arinze Onuaku: 9 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block, 27 min
Josh Wright: 5 points, 2 assists, 12 min
David Gomez: 3 points, 1 rebound, 3 steals
    D. Stith: 12 points, 9 rebounds, 1 block

Next: On the 5th, Syracuse will play their first road game of the season, and it comes against a tough 4-3 Virginia team. The Cavs aren't GREAT in anything, but they are a very good shooting team. Sean Singletary is the 1 stud of the team (92 ovr), and should be a very tough matchup for whoever guards him (most likely Flynn). He's the second leading scorer in the ACC (21 PPG, to Hansbrough's amazing 33.6), and has 5.7 assists per game.

In other Syracuse news, the Orange have the #4 RPI in the land (had #1 last week), and are ranked #4 in the Coaches Poll. They're avergaing just over 77 PPG, are shooting 53.5% from the field, over 45% from three, and snatching 27.4 rebounds a game.
The attendance is at 76%, a bit low for being ranked 7th, no?
Paul Harris now leads the team in scoring with 16.3 PPG.

In offense efficiency, ESPN.com has given them an A+, as they seem to have the #1 ranked offense in the land (this is on the report card on team card). For defense they have an F, and are ranked a dismal 307

And now, the Orange have unveiled their new signing...

Dominic Henson, PG The #16 overall, and #10 rated PG out of Memphis has chosen Syracuse. He's small at 6', he's not a shooter, but a distributer. The 5* has a lot to learn, and who better to learn from than Johnny Flynn.

Curtis Gadson, a 3* PF Syracuse was looking at, has picked Fordham instead.

No biggie, as the Orange have their eye on another PG, Sheldon Chiles out of Atlanta. The All American, Mr. Basketball has a better shot than Henson, and could get more playing time if he decides to come. If Chiles chooses Duke over the Orange, they will definately sign JC SO PF Broderick Krymski, a solid rebounder and a 4* recruit.

        12/5 Gameday

        Orange Basketball Blog
        By Mike Brown

        (7-0) #7 Syracuse Orange @ (4-3) Virginia Cavaliers
        December 5th, 2007
        John Paul Jones Arena

        Orange 14, Cavaliers 4
4 minutes into the game, Syracuse has showed no mercy with their perimeter game, as Devendorf and Rautins have both hit deep threes. Johnny Flynn and Devendorf are doing a good job at making sure Singletary has no easy shots today, and the Cavs can't seem to hit a shot from anywhere. Hopefully the defense can keep this up.

        -

        Orange 27, Cavaliers 16
Syracuse has continued to pressure Virginia into making mistakes, and simply won't miss a shot. They're 9/12 from the field and 5/6 from three. The great part about it is, there isn't just one star. Everybody on the team is doing it. The entire starting roster has scored, and even injured Donte Greene has scored a three. 4 minutes remaining in the half.

        -

        Half: Orange 34, Cavaliers 25
The Orange have cooled off, and the Cavs have turned it on. It's mainly Virginia's PF, Scott, who only has 1 point but has 5 rebounds that's killing us. Second chance points and easy buckets thanks to assists by Singletary (who has 6 points) are what have brought Virginia back into the game. Eric Devendorf has decided to avenge his 5 point performance last game, as he already has 9 on 2/2 from three shooting. Paul Harris has 7 points and 4 rebounds. The Cavs are shooting 1/9 from three, while the Orange are shooting 6/9.

Look for Virginia to crawl back into this game though, as they had been doing in the last 5 minutes of the half.

        -

        Orange 47, Cavaliers 37
The teams are going back and forth now, but get Eric Devendorf the ball! He's missed 3 shots all game and made 7 (2 of those were threes) and has 13 points. SF Diane for Virginia has 17 points, and needs to be stopped by Paul Harris soon or the Orange are in trouble. Still, 'Cuse is managing to hold off the Cavs...for now.

        -

        Orange 51, Cavaliers 49
I told you, if Diane didn't get stopped he'd get Virginia back into this game. He now has 24 points on 11/14 shooting (two threes to add), and shows no signs of slowing up. Meanwhile, the Orange have been stopped on defense that last few times down the court, and can't seem to do anything right right now with 5 minutes left.

        -

        Orange 56, Cavaliers 57
Virginia has just taken their first lead of the game with less than 3 minutes to play, after a Singletary raindrop from the free throw line. Syracuse has themselves in a hole here, and Coach Boeheim has just called a time out.

        -

        Orange 58, Cavaliers 61
'Cuse just had a chance for a couple baskets, but didn't make them and Virginia's offense has really started to mesh. Paul Harris just threw the ball out of bounds on the inbounds pass, and that's not helping with 1:30 left to play.

        -

        Orange 63, Cavaliers 65
Syracuse again had a chance to tie the game after Arinze Onuaku got an offensive board and put it back up for the and 1, but missed the free throw to keep Virginia up 1. On the other end, Singletary ran a backdoor cut past Flynn to extend that lead to 3 with just under a minute to play. Devendorf was fouled on the ensuing play with just under 35 seconds left, and only made one. Syracuse was forced to foul.

        -

        Final: Orange 63, Cavaliers 72
Late game mistakes led to the Orange's first loss, and Boeheim's first as a head coach at Syracuse. The defense fell apart, and the offense couldn't continue the magic they had in the first half. You hate to blame a loss on inexperience because it sounds so cliche, but when it all comes down to it, that was the main reason. The Orange were missing arguably their MVP of the first few games, Donte Greene, and when you play a tough, verteran team like Virginia, a devastating loss is bound to happen.

        Stats
        Orange, Cavaliers
        FG%: 50%, 53%
        3pt: 7/13, 4/13
        FT: 10/15, 16/22
        Assists: 13, 18
        Turnovers: 6, 2
        Rebounds: 20, 25
        O. Rebounds: 3, 9
        Blocks: 2, 5
        Bench points: 12, 19
        Fast break points: 4, 14

        Players
        Johnny Flynn: 7 points, 6 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover, 2/8 FG
Eric Devendorf: 16 points, 1 turnover, 6/9 FG
Andy Rautins: 9 points, 2 assists
Paul Harris: 13 points, 8 rebounds, 1 steal
Arinze Onuaku: 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks
Scoop Jardine: 7 points, 1 asssist
        S. Singletary: 16 points, 7 assists, 1 turnover, 0/3 from three
        M. Diane (POTG): 28 points, 4 assists
        W. Harris: 16 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block

Next: vs. 7-3 Rhode Island. The Rams are an excellent shooting team, and although the only power conference team they've beaten is South Florida (lost @ UAB, @ Boston College, and vs. #24 Providence) and the best team they've beaten is that same USF team (4-4 record), they're still talented and youthful.
Their two top scorers, SR SF Will Daniels (15 PPG, 5.7 RPG) and JR PG Jimmy Baron (9.7 PPG) are injured. They'll most likely play, but how threatening they'll be is a whole other topic.

          (7-3) Rhode Island Rams @ (7-1) #7 Syracuse Orange
          December 8th, 2007
          Carrier Dome

Syracuse pulls out the win following Wednesday's loss

Syracuse couldn't lose to this puny, no-name A-Ten team, could they?

The Rams sure put up a fight in the first half, actually taking the lead for a while before Syracuse came back to take a 42-37 lead at the break, with the bench playing a big part in those 42 points, mainly Scoop Jardine.

Rhode Island kept going hard until the final minute, but in the end the Orange's talent kept the Rams from getting any closer to a win. In the first half it was the bench, and in the second it was the stars, Eric Devendorf and Paul Harris.

"I'm proud that my guys were able to step up and forget about that one loss," said Coach Boeheim after the game. "To overcome 3/13 three point shooting is great, and the defense really stepped up in the second half and ended up forcing 17 turnovers. These guys deserve a break and might get one, haha."

Slow but steady center Arinze Onuaku earned player of the game honors, with only 6 points but pulling in 15 rebounds. No Rhode Island player scored in double digits.

              Carrier Dome

Cuse take care of business in 2nd half

Donte Greene's return was not going to be as poor as Eric Devendorf's, he made that clear. Greene was ready to go in practice about 5 days before game time against the Bucs, and looked pretty sharp.

He continued to look sharp in the game with ETSU, especially in the beginning, accounting for 10 of Syracuse's first 15 points. The Bucs put some pressure on the young ball handler Johnny Flynn, but he was unphased and only turned it over once in the half. SG Courtney Pigram kept ETSU in the game though, scoring 20 in the half, as the Orange were still up at the half, 36-31.

In the second half the crowd would get to the small A-Sun team, and Devendorf started to light the Dome up with his all around performance. Syracuse easily won the game in the second half, holding Pigram to only 4 points, and doing all the little things right.

While the Orange still won handily, there was some cause for concern with the Coach. "We didn't outrebound them, we turned the ball over just as much as they did, we didnt hustle more, we didn't do much better than them. I give a lot of credit to ETSU and the program they've built there, and I wish them the best of luck after offering up a very good game of basketball."

Donte Greene earned player of the game honors in his return, with 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Syracuse balanced attack pulls it out in 2nd half again

"I'm happy with a win, of course," said a seemingly flustered Coach Boeheim as his team was heading into the locker room. "But if we keep doing poorly in the first half, myself and my team is going to lose all of their hair by the time they're 30." Coach was obviously talking about Syracuse's poor performance in the first half again.

The Orange dominated in the first few minutes, and their athleticism shined through Colgate's experience. Still, the Raiders made a run at the end of the half, as every one that played in the first half scored, and tied the score at 40 at half time.

Devendorf, Paul Harris, and even Andy Rautins got in the fun in the second half though, as the Orange talent obliderated the Raiders in the second half. Colgate couldn't find a hot hand, and 'Cuse spread the love with everybody doing well.

"The defense did better today, but we were still outrebounded. We worked on that in practice the last two weeks, so I don't know what's going on with us."

Next: On Saturday, Cornell will be next to fall vict...I mean visit Syracuse. The Big Red won't wow anybody with their talent, but have some great shooters, namely Ryan Wittman (66 ovr, 86 3pt, 11 PPG) and Adam Gore (66 ovr, 86 3pt, 7.3 PPG). Their big men aren't too much to handle, but they have some great guards that could cause Syracuse trouble.
