Foligno Scores First in Season Opener

Nick Foligno left his first game in the NHL a very happy young man. He left the Air Canada Center with a team victory and an NHL goal. Foligno fought in training camp for a spot on the roster, and made the team. Now he has shown the coaches that keeping him on the NHL roster was so far a good decision.

The scoring got started almost half-way through the first when Patrick Eaves made a saucer pass through some Leaf defenders onto Chris Kelly's stick. Kelly one-timed the pass, just over Toskala's glove and into the net. 1-0, Ottawa

The second goal for Ottawa came three quarters of the way through the second period on a slap shot from Anton volchenkov. Ottawa spent a lot of time setting up this score, cycling the puck around the zone and waiting for an open shot. Finally the point was opened up and Philips made the pass and Volchenkov ripped it by Toskala.
      2-0, Ottawa

The Leafs only goal of the game came at the very end of the second period. Sundin got set-up behind the net, passed it to the side-boards to Jason Blake, who passed it in-front of the net to Steen who slid it along the ice past Emery for the score.
      2-1, Ottawa

Foligno's first career goal came very early in the third period and gave Ottawa a two goal lead. Foligno was 'cherry picking' between the blue and center line when McAmmond got the puck away from the Leaf forwards and sent the puck to Foligno. Foligno caught the puck in-stride and went down the ice. He deked Toskala to the left, then to the right before roofing the puck into the net.
      3-1, Ottawa

Ottawa's final goal of the night was an empty netter, with 30 seconds left. Ottawa was on the penalty kill as Fisher tripped Sundin as he was trying to start a break-out. The Leafs were putting a lot of pressure on Ottawa, but Alfredsson intercepted a pass and took it to center ice. He then fired the puck towards the Toronto net and it slowly slid into the back of it.
      4-1, Ottawa

Ottawa came out with a solid victory, ruining the Leafs home-opener. These two teams will battle again tommorrow, at the ScotiaBank Place in Ottawa.

Foligno, Alfredsson score second goal of season in Victory

Foligno potted his second goal of his career in as many games. Alfredsson also netted his second empty net goal of the year, in the 4-2 victory of their rivals.

Ottawa's first goal came on the powerplay. The Leafs tried to clear the puck, but Joe Corvo kept the puck in the zone, and fired a slapshot that Toskala barely reacted to for the score.
        1-0, Ottawa

The second goal of Foligno's career came early in the second period. Foligno forechecked hard and won the puck off dump in, he then wheeled it around to McAmmond who passed it cross ice to Donovan, who dumped it back to Foligno behind the net. Foligno came out to the front of the net, and into the slot. He roofed a shot above Toskala's glove, for his second NHL goal.
        2-0, Ottawa

The Leafs first goal came early in the third period. Sundin carried the puck into the zone, did a drop pass to Jason Blake who slapped it on net, Gerber saved the shot. Unfortunately Gerber let a huge rebound slip, and Steen ripped it by him.
        2-1, Ottawa

Toronto's tieing goal was a softy. Wellwood took a shot coming into the zone, from the point. Gerber reacted slowly and the puck squeezed through his pads.
        2-2, Tie game

Ottawa wasted no time retaking their lead, as only 30 seconds after the Toronto goal, Spezza scored. Spezza won a draw at center ice to Meszaros. Meszaros passed it to Alfredsson who skated around the net, passed it to the slot to Spezza. Spezza one-timed the pass, for the leading score.
        3-2, Ottawa

Ottawa's final goal came with an empty net. Ottawa had dumped the puck into the zone and brought a heavy forecheck; three skaters coming in on the puck. Alfredsson won the puck and scored an easy goal.
        4-2, Ottawa

Spezza, Emery, clutch in shootout victory

Ottawa will remain undefeated as Spezza scored the shootout winner against Lundqvist and the Rangers. Emery held every New York shooter scoreless and gave his team the chance to win.

New York scored their first goal on a soft bouncing puck that got by Emery. Jagr had brought the puck behind the net and passed it to Gomez in front. Gomez did not make good contact with the puck and it rolled by Emery and into the net somehow.
          1-0, Rangers

Ottawa Tied it up shortly after and the forechecking line of Fisher, Neil and Robitaille went to work. Neil was the first checker in and he won the puck fairly easily from the young defensman, Mark Stall. He passed it to Volchenkov at the point, who passed it to back to Neil. Neil moved the puck to Fisher behind the net, who skated to the sideboards and passed it to Robitaille. Randy Robitaille, took a couple of strides before firing a high shot into the net.
          1-1, Tie game

Now, halfway through the second period. Ottawa's fourth line, probably one of the best 4th line's in the NHL was gathering some ice time. This line has also been one of the best lines for Ottawa, and they did not dissapoint. Donovan made a pass to Foligno skating into the zone, Foligno drove to the net with the puck and made a quick cross-crease pass to Dean McAmmond. McAmmond roofed the one timer, to take the lead.
          2-1, Ottawa

Dany Heatley had no goals in the first two matches against the Leafs, but today he got into his scoring form. Heatley took the puck off the draw at center ice and quickly moved into the offensive zone. He put the puck through Mark Stall's legs and got around him. He then deked Lundqvist out of his skates and scored.
          3-1, Ottawa

At the 15 minute mark of the second period, Nick Foligno, Ottawa's leading goal scorerand rookie ;tied with Alfredsson for the scoring lead. Took a hip-check when skating into the zone. Information about the injury has not yet been released by the Senators. Foligno did not return in the game.

Halfway through the third, the Rangers were on a powerplay off a Chris Kelly interference penalty. Shanahan got the puck in front of the net in the slot, and slap shotted the puck by Emery who could not react fast enough to the puck.
          3-2, Ottawa

Then four minutes later, the Rangers would find the net. This time Peter Prucha scored on a wrap-around.
          3-3, Tie Game

In overtime Ottawa dominated, firing shot after shot, but Lundqvist held strong and took his team to the shootout. In the shootout Emery was fantastic. He stopped all three Rangers shooter. Lundqvist started strong with a diving save against Alfredsson, but was fooled by Spezza and had to leave Ottawa with a loss.
          4-3, Ottawa

            Injury Report

            Nick Foligno - Sore Shoulder
            Return: October 18, 2007

Foligno could play through the injury, but Ottawa will not risk their talented rookie. Schubert will move onto the fourth line, and Luke Richardson will be playing with Corvo on defense.
