Re: Going Back to Cali (CH2K8)

        Cal Team Preview

        Backcourt
The departures of second-leading scorer and top assist man Ayinde Ubaka (13.9 ppg, 4.3 apg) and Omar Wilkes (9.9 ppg), who chose to stop playing basketball and give up his final year of eligibility, create a major need for offense on the perimeter.
        CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS

Ryan Anderson, who led Cal in scoring and rebounding last season, could get more perimeter shots this year.

        Probable Starting Five
        G Jerome Randle (6.7 ppg)
        G Eric Vierneisel (8.6 ppg)
        G Patrick Christopher (5.1 ppg)
        F Ryan Anderson (16.4 ppg, 8.1 rpg)
        C DeVon Hardin (10.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg)
        Top Reserves
G Nikola Knezevic (injured last season)
        F Jamal Boykin (transfer)
C Jordan Wilkes (injured last season)
        F Omandi Omeke (4.2 ppg)

It will be the job of shooting guard - sophomore Patrick Christopher - to fill much of that void. Patrick is a slasher who can get in the lane. Missed will be 6-6 Theo Robertson who started every game last season, but was the third or fourth offensive option. Robertson had hip surgery - the same procedure that UCLA wing Josh Shipp has endured twice - in April and is expected to be ready to play in 2008. The 6-5 Christopher came off the bench last season and showed he can provide a scoring punch at times. During a three-game stretch against Oregon, Oregon State and UCLA, Christopher averaged 16 ppg.

Sophomores Jerome Randle and Nikola Knezevic will battle for the starting job at point guard. The 5-10 Randle, who saw steady minutes in a backup role last season, has a great motor and plays at a frenetic pace. He needs to show he can be effective in the halfcourt game and be a good distributor. Knezevic, a native of Serbia, missed last season with a knee injury.

        Frontcourt
The Pac-10 is being touted as a "big-man league," and the Bears are one of the reasons.
Multidimensional forward Ryan Anderson earned a spot on Rivals.com's Freshman All-America third team last season after leading the Bears in scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg) and finishing second in 3-pointers made (60). All of that production came during a season where Anderson largely played out of position because of a leg injury that kept 6-foot-11 center Devon Hardin out for the last 22 games.
Hardin, who was averaging 10.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 1.9 bpg before getting hurt, was being touted as a first-round pick on some NBA Draft boards but chose to pull out of the draft. He will provide a large presence in the paint, especially on defense. That will allow Anderson to roam on the perimeter, where he is most dangerous.
Depth will come in the form of senior power forward Eric Vierneisel, Duke transfer Jamal Boykin and 7-foot sophomore Jordan Wilkes - who missed last season with a knee injury. The wild card could be Max Zhang, a 7-3 freshman from China who was a late addition to the recruiting class.

        Offense
If open, shoot the ball. That was the offensive motto last season, especially after Hardin went down in December. The Bears set a school record with 249 made 3-pointers despite not playing in the postseason. That number won't be approached in 2007-08. Ubaka was the team's top 3-point shooter, and Robertson and Christopher are average shooters at best from beyond the arc. Look for the Bears to attack the basket more - their 520 free-throw attempts ranked ninth in the Pac-10 last season - and also get more second chances with Hardin in the lineup.

        Defense
The Bears must make some drastic improvements on defense to reverse last season's struggles. They finished next-to-last in the league in opponents' field-goal percentage (46 percent) and last with 4.5 steals a game. Hardin's return will allow them to play more man-to-man, the preference of 11th-year coach Ben Braun, and that should help boost those stats.

        Outlook with postseason forecast
Erase any memories you have of the 2006-07 Bears. That team was badly undersized and woefully unlucky. Five players missed time with knee surgeries, forcing several players to play out of their natural positions. With Hardin and Wilkes back, the Bears won't get crushed on the boards, which was the main source of their problems last season. Anderson looks ready to emerge as a go-to scorer. The key will be how Randle and Christopher handle bigger roles. We think both are ready to step up. Expect the Bears to struggle in conference play. Say hello to the NIT.

        Shoes to Fill
G Ayinde Ubaka. This versatile guard created offense for himself and others. It will take a collective effort to replace his production.

        Must Step Up
G Patrick Christopher. The Bears feel confident about their front line, but they need a guard to emerge as a consistent scoring threat. The talented Christopher, the No. 44 prospect in the class of 2007, is the top candidate.

        Impact Newcomer
F Jamal Boykin. This 6-6 forward may play more than any of the four freshmen the Bears signed. Boykin isn't that athletic and is a little undersized, but he plays with high energy and a toughness that could make him a valuable role player.

The Pac-10 is fun! Good for you!

            Here are some tips:

            WSU sucks
UCLA is going to kill you
USC has a very overrated Mayo...watch out for him. Oh and foul them...they can't shoot FT's
            Oregon State isn't that bad

            Oh and ASU is legit

Oh and dear god please guard Ryan Appleby from Washington...he plays like Larry Bird in this game.

I never really paid any attention to how the Pac-10 schedules because I'm a BE guy but it seems like every trip is 2 away games, then 2 at home vs teams from the same state. Opening up @USC & @ UCLA means I could easily be behind the 8-ball at 0-2 to start the season.

Right now I am just copying everything from my dynastymanager site with a few tables from excel, and some basic html. Stewaat put me onto Dreamweaver and Fireworks so I'm tryin to figure them out. Good looking Stew.

I actually have about 3-4 games played but until I figure out a layout that is easy to use and looks halfway decent I wont post the results.

I kinda noticed how the schedule was put together but when you just said this I took a second look. I think thats pretty cool how they do it.

Oregon & Oregon St. this week for me.

I guess UCLA is paired up with USC (me) so therefore I play them during a 1 game week on a Sunday. It's pretty awesome.

Could be a blessing or a curse with the way the schedule is for me. If I'm still in the Pac 10 hunt come March, the last 2 games with UCLA and USC could be HUGE. I can't wait to get into conf play but the way things are going I definately need to rack up all the W's I can get.
