    Utah Utes Season Review

The Utah Runnin' Utes finished their 2007/08 season with a 21-10 record and went 11-5 in conference play, unfortunately it was not enough for Utes to take their Conference with the BYU Cougars taking the regular season conference title and the UNLV Rebels taking the conference tournament.

Utah made the NCAA Tournament only to me knocked out in the first round buy Marquette 79-60. Utah was led by big man Luke Nevill who was named conference player of the year after averaging 16.8 points and 8.9 rebounds a game. Nevill was also named 1st team All-MWC and enters next season on the short list for the Wooden and Naismith Awards.

North Carolina led by Player of the year Tyler Hansbrough won the National Championship 82-78 over the Kansas Jayhawks. Hansbrough lived up to his billing as player of the year with a 30 point, 11 rebound performance in the Tar Heels Victory.

        Salt Lake Stories:

        Utah Jazz Season Review

The Utah Jazz finished the season with a 44-38 record but missed out on the playoffs. Carlos Boozer led the Jazz with 23.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while Point Guard Deron Williams chipped in with 18.6 points and 7.9 assists per game. Williams or Boozer where the only Jazz players to lead the team in scoring for the entire season.

Boozer and Andrei Kirilenko (8.8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 6.4 APG) both made the All-Star team as back ups. Kirilenko scored 6 points in 17 minutes while Boozer pulled down 9 boards and added 2 points in 15 minutes. Deron Williams finished 4th in Point Guard voting despite averaging 18.6 points and 7.9 assist per game, he was the 3rd highest scoring Point Guard in the League.

No Jazz players made All-NBA 1st,2nd or 3rd team this year.

LeBron James was named MVP after a 26.2 PPG, 7.3 PRG, 6.4 APG season but the Cav's failed to make the playoffs a year after going to the finals. Seattle's Kevin Durant was named Rookie of the Year after averaging 21 points per. Dwight Howard was rewarded with for his great season with the defensive player of the year award. Howard was also awarded the Finals MVP.

The Dwight Howard led Orlando Magic won the NBA Championship over the Tim Duncan led Spurs. Howard was awarded Finals MVP after averaging 19.9 PPG, 13.1 RPG, 2.1 BPG per game. The Spurs led 2-0 but the Magic tied it up 2-2 and it wasn't until game 7 that the winner was decided. Howard was strong in the decider scoring 17 points and pulling in 13 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks.

                    - Not The fastest Guard on the floor
                    - Turnover Prone
Can light up the score board from pretty much any where on the floor. Defense is a bit of a problem but it's something he can improve on. Lacks the killer instinct to be a star. Great fundamentals.

                    - Can be pushed around by bigger Forwards
                    - Struggles on the Fast break
Takes care of shots that come his way. Strength is an issue but once he bulks up his game should expand. Defense is ahead of offense in high school which is natural for a guy his size/position.

                    - Not big enough to play center and will struggle at PF
Takes care of shots that come his way. Size and Strength is an issue but once he bulks up his game should expand. Defense is his specialty, not the biggest offensive force. Needs to grow a few inches to be a presence in the middle.

            Salt Lake Stories:
            NBA OFF-SEASON
            PART ONE

The Utah Jazz were sent into disarray early in the off season with head coach Jerry Sloan announcing that he would be retiring as head coach of the Utah Jazz after 20 years at the helm of the Jazz and 23 years as a Head Coach in the NBA. Sloan finished with 999 Wins and 643 losses. Sloan led the Jazz to the NBA finals in 97 and 98 only to fall to the Micheal Jordan led Chicago Bulls.

Jerry Sloan reached the play-offs 19 out of the 23 years including a highly successful run of sixteen consecutive seasons of taking his team to the playoffs, and he has coached such players as Karl Malone, John Stockton, Jeff Hornacek, Antoine Carr, Tom Chambers, Mark Eaton, and Jeff Malone during the process.

Sloan has led the Jazz to six division championships and ten seasons with over fifty wins. He also took the Jazz to the NBA Finals twice, losing in the 1997 and 1998 championships, both times to his old team, the Michael Jordan-led Bulls. By the end of this period, he had joined Pat Riley and Phil Jackson as the only coaches with ten or more seasons winning fifty or more games. After the retirement of long-time Jazz anchors Stockton and Malone, Sloan coached a younger group of budding stars, including Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirilenko and, later, Deron Williams.

In spring of 2004, Sloan and his team were involved in a battle for the eighth spot in the NBA's western conference for that season, which would have given Sloan his seventeenth straight trip to the playoffs. The Jazz were tied with the Denver Nuggets for the eighth and last spot of the playoffs with three games to go in the regular season. The Jazz lost these final two games, causing Sloan to miss the playoffs for the first time in eighteen seasons as Jazz coach. After leading a young, dismantled team to an unexpected 42-40 record, he finished just behind Hubie Brown of the Memphis Grizzlies in voting for the 2004 NBA Coach of the Year Award, an award that he has still never won, despite his success.

After disappointing seasons in 2004-05 and 2005-06, the strong play of the Jazz in the 2006-07 season had renewed speculation from some sportswriters that Sloan would be a strong candidate for NBA Coach of the Year in 2007. But Sloan lost the award to Sam Mitchell, coach of the Toronto Raptors, who led his team to a franchise-record-tying 47 victories and their first Atlantic Division title. Sloan lost by 93 points, 394-301. Third place runner up was Avery Johnson of the Dallas Mavericks with 268 points.

Sloan and the Jazz advanced to the Western Conference finals on May 15th, 2007 with a 100-87 win over the Golden State Warriors. It's the sixth time in franchise history that Utah advanced to the conference finals, all coming under Sloan.

Joining Sloan as a retiree are Pat Riley (Miami Heat), Mike Dunleavey (LA Clippers), George Karl (Denver Nuggets) and Rick Adelman (Houston Rockets).

              NBA OFF-SEASON
              PART TWO

The Utah Jazz shocked every body with their decision for their new Head Coach. Utah introduced Vince Carlisle as their new head coach. Carlisle has never been a head coach or assistant in the NBA but he has previously coached Olympiacos in the Euro League.

Carlisle is being tabbed as the man to take over from the Great Jerry Sloan but his personal expectations are far less extravagant. “ I hopefully can make a smooth transition from Euro league coach to NBA head coach, I no things will be rough but hopefully we will work out any kinks we have in the pre season.” Carlisle said.

Carlos Boozer had this to say about his new coach, “ Coach Carlisle spoke the group of players before he was introduced and we really like the way he was open with issues such as playing time, play calling and the style of basketball we will be playing. We are looking forward to our first scrimmage with Coach Carlisle so we can show him that we will work just as hard for him as we did with Coach Sloan”.

                NBA OFF-SEASON
                PART THREE – NBA DRAFT

Utah entered the Draft with the 13th overall pick and had several players on their draft board including Micheal Beasley from Kansas State, Jacque Silverstre from France, Eric Gordon from Indiana, Brandon Rush from Kansas and O.J. Mayo from USC. Each of these players would be a welcome addition to the Jazz with Shooting Guard a position that could be upgraded as well as Small Forward where Andrei Kirilenko, the current starter is only averaging 8.8 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Utah watched as Beasley (8th overall), Silverstre (2nd overall), Gordon (7th overall) and Rush (5th overall) all went off the board. Thankfully for the Jazz freshman sensation O.J. Mayo slipped past the Kings (11th) and Knicks (12th) and fell straight into the laps of the Utah Jazz and new coach Vince Carlisle. “we are really excited with such a talent like O.J. Falling straight into our laps. Mayo and Deron Williams will be a dangerous duo for years to come, team them up with Ronnie Brewer, Carlos Boozer and Maurice Almond and we have a great young nucleus".

Utah went for inside help in the 2nd round with 7'2” Vladmir Vugrinec from Lithuania. Vugrince should challenge Kyrylo Fesenko for the final roster spot with Jarron Collins being released prior to the draft. Vugrinec weighs in at 290 pounds and is a defensive monster in the paint, he is not the most gifted big man but coach Carlisle loves his intangibles and thinks with some solid coaching and some maturity he could become a solid contributer for the Jazz.

The Utah Jazz also released Point Guard Jason Hart and Center Jarron Collins, they also [picked up the options on Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams.

                        Salt Lake Stories:
                        NBA OFF-SEASON
                        PART FOUR – FREE AGENCY

The Utah Jazz remained very quite during free agency preferring to stick with the current players on their roster rather then go out and spend boat loads of money on players such as Gilbert Arenas, Luol Deng, Emeka Okafor and so forth. A few teams were very active in the market with Charlotte, Philadelphia and New Jersey all adding some quality veterans.

New Jersey picked up the biggest free agent prize of the summer with the signing of former Washington Wizard Gilbert Arenas agreeing to a 3 year deal. Arenas will be the starting point guard with Devin Harris moved to back up, Arenas will team with Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson to form a dangerous trio.

Washington picked up former Chicago Bull Luol Deng who will start at small forward with Caron Butler moving back to shooting guard. Washington picked up Deng but lost the dangerous Arenas as well as the multi talented Antawn Jamison who left for the Charlotte Bobcats after former #1 pick Emeka Okafor left to back up David West and Tyson Chandler in New Orleans. The Bobcats also picked up former Bull Chris Duhon.

The Sonics picked up a pair of former Heat players with Ricky Davis and Jason Williams both agreeing to two year deals. Miami made up for the loss with Monta Ellis agreeing to terms, Ellis joins Miami as a perfect compliment to Dwayne Wade but leaves Warriors with a big hole to fill.

Rumors around the league are that the Jazz have placed Andrei Kirilinko on the trading block and are looking for a future 1st round draft pick as well as a 2nd round pick in next years draft. If any team take Kirilinko it is expected that the Jazz will move Kyle Korver to small forward and Ronnie Brewer will become the starting shooting guard with O.J. Mayo backing him up, there is also a chance that Brewer could move to small forward and Mayo to shooting guard with Korver coming off the bench and backing up both positions.

                          Utah Utes 2008-2009 Season Outlook

                          2007-2008 Record 21-10, 11-5, 3rd
                          2007-2008 Postseason 1st Round (L to Marquette)

                          Who's Out:
Chris Grant and Johnnie Bryant. The pair combined for 13.3 points per game, 5 rebounds per game and 4.2 assists per game. They will not be missed so much on the offensive side of the ball or defensive side of the ball but their leadership abilities is what will be missed the most

Who's In: Utah brought in 3 recruits including a pair of juco's but the biggest newcomer that could have an impact is walk on center/forward Bob Deng. Utah targeted its front court with its recruiting and signed juco's Floyd See and Vytas Toppert, they also brought in combo guard Randal Law.

Deng, See and Toppert are all capable of playing the 4 and 5 but Deng is seen as the player that should contribute straight away. Deng has been inserted straight into the starting lineup and is expected to team up with 7'1” center Luke Nevill and give the Utes a presence up front.

Who to Watch: Luke Nevill, Nevill returns for his senior season and looks to improve his draft stock. Nevill averaged 16.8 points per game last season and 8.9 rebounds and those number should increase this year with the coaching staff wanting to work from the inside out.

Final Projection Utah is a real contender this season and it would not be surprising to see them ranked in the top 15 this season, the play of Nevill, Borha and Kepkat will determine just how far Utah goes. Look for a big season from Bob Deng and Vytas Toppert.
