Coaching Dynasty for MattG in BBCF

The NCFA is run using Bowl Bound College Football. The league can be found here and will begin it's 2nd season in a few weeks:

Coach MattG was hired midway through last year and led the Gators to an 11-2 season, with their only losses coming to Kentucky and Florida State.

In the first round of the playoffs Florida easily dispatched TCU 40-14 behind the running of all SEC halfback Paul Gonzales.

Unfortunately the Gators once again though ran into the buzz saw known as the Seminoles in the second round, and lost a heart breaker 33-32.

With Gonzales and star QB Robert Carter graduating, the Gators believe this season will be a rebuilding year depending on how their recruiting goes.

So far six recruits have signed on the dotted line with two of them being 5* wideouts in Melvin McCarthy and Bert Worley. Melvin is a 6'6 standout from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida and more than likely will start his freshman year.

Other signings are FB Steven Shepherd, ILB Gary Jones, TE Ryan Meyers, SS Robert Grady, and CB Phillip Wheeler. All of those are 4* recruits, with Shepherd, Jones, and Meyers all showing the most promise.

Florida coaches currently are heavily recruiting QB David Jeffers and RB Luther Sierra to take the place of their departed stars. Both are rated as 4* and the Gators need to reel them in if they have any hopes of competing in the SEC next season.

Another session of recruiting is over and this time the Gators snagged 6 total players, bringing their total to 12 so far this off-season.

QB David Jeffers, FS Daniel Foster, DT Jason Ballard, CB Timothy Kahn, and OG Michael Edmondson all signed commitment letters today in a small conference room located in the athletic department. All were 4* ranked players according to the Gators scouting department

Jeffers is a 6'2 183 lb drop back passer from East Iberville (LA). He had a 3.5 GPA during HS and will more than likely compete for the job after his red shirt year. Edmonson is 6'8, 267 lbs and will start after his red shirt year. He's a dominating blocker who can handle the pass rush and open up holes for the running game equally well.

Coach had this to say. "We are excited about the young men who decided to come to Florida and become student-athletes. All of them will be crucial in the years to come."

The last session of recruiting ended up with the Gators signing their final 4 players.

DT Paul Smith, RB Luther Sierra, FS Henry Love, and ILB Roger Oneal and put the ink to the paper today. Sierra is a JUCO junior who comes in and could start right away. He will see significant playing time though either way. Smith is 6'7 and 277 lbs, is an excellent run stopper and should see some playing time on 1st and 2nd down during his freshman year.

Spring training is up next for the Gators which should help the coaches solidify the starters. Below is the list of the entire Gator recruiting class.

Good recruiting class for the Gators. I think you'll be ranked in the top 10, but not quite sure how the game ranks classes.

Thanks I hope so. I will post it as soon as recruiting is done (I ran out of scholarships there are still a few more sessions).

In what will be their head coaches first official full season as coach of the Gators it's really a guess which way this team will go. A heartbreaking loss to FSU last season in the playoffs ended his first campaign with a 11-3 record, and some key losses across the board make this a young and not quite as talented bunch.

QB - Superstar Robert Carter is gone, and junior Mike Kirby takes over this year. Last season he had a QB rating of 108.7, but then again he only threw 3 passes, completing 2 of them. We figure if he continues on that trend of 66% completion rate for the whole season the Gators will be okay at the top spot. Baking him up is Junior Daniel Hall who spent most of last season holding onto the cord for coaches headset. He did spend some time getting water which he showed the ability to carry without spilling.

RB - Senior Salvatore Stevens takes over the starter for departed stud Paul Gonzales who rushed for 2068 yards and 15 TD's. Last season he had 434 yards and 5 TD's in only limited playing time due to Gonzales never missing a down. Backing him up is speedster Randall Hall. These guys will split a lot of playing time.

WR - The potential for this group is awesome, the reality not so awesome. Three wide outs (So/Carter, Fr/Worley, Fr/McCarthy) all have 5* potential. Carter and Worley will be the starters this year while McCarthy takes a red shirt season in hopes of bringing up his poor work ethic/GPA. Coach would like nothing more than to see his 6'6 body lined up on the other side of the field from 6'6 Carter next season but only time will tell. Trent Ramirez, another sophomore, will occupy the #3 spot and can play just as well as the other two starters.

TE - True freshman Ryan Meyers who has all sorts of upside gets the nod to start. His brains worry the coaching staff and his hands need work, so senior Lynn Castro will come in on passing downs. Last season Castro only had 5 receptions so the Gators are hoping for a bit more.

OL - From left to right we will have Rivera, Watson, Williams, Curtis, and Campbell. Rivera is the senior leader and star of the group and is responsible for the quarterbacks blind side. He started last season and had 18 key run blocks and 16 pancakes while only giving up 2 sacks. The staff expects him to be a dominant run blocker the whole season.

DL - Seniors DE James Kenny (1 sack, 7 hurries) and DT Kenneth Harden (5 sacks, 7 hurries) lead this young bunch and anchor the left side of the line. Freshman DT John Duffy and sophomore DL Javier Stewart (3 sacks) will do their best to plug holes on the other side. Freshman DT Paul Smith and sophomore DE Billy Price will be the main subs.

LB - Junior Roger Oneal gets the nod as 1/2 of the crew in the Gators 4-2-5. Senior Joshua Jackson will play the other spot. Last season Jackson had 89 tackles, 7 sacks, and 10 hurries. He is fast and is a fierce pass rusher off the corner. The Gator staff is hoping he hits the 100/10 mark this season in tackles/sacks. Sophomore Harry Dalton is still trying to figure out his new OLB position but looks to improve on his solid freshman campaign of 64 tackles and 1 sack. His pass rush skills are unheard of for a young player and his new spot should let him get to the QB a little more.

DB - JUCO transfer Philip Wheeler comes in and starts immediately at corner. Across from him is junior John Porterfield. Junior Eric Davis is the 3rd option. The CB's are the weakness for this years team and has the defensive coordinators a little worried. Safety William Hill is the leader of the backfield. Last season he had 3 interceptions and 84 tackles at strong safety. Free safety will be played by sophomore Carlos Ryan. True freshman Robert Grady and Henry Love will also get significant playing time.

Special Teams - Sophomore kicker Julian Wilkerson had an outstanding freshman campaign. He made 47 of 48 PAT's and 34 out of 38 FG's with a long of 50 yards. Senior punter Alfred Edwards takes over for departed senior William Williams. He has a strong leg but his accuracy suffers at times.

Overall - The Gators have the two Nevada teams travel to the Swamp in the first few weeks, UNR and UNLV in week 1 and 2 respectively. This should let the Gators get things in order before their tough SEC schedule begins. Games against #8 LSU, #11 Ole Miss, Tennessee, #20 Georgia, and against #16 FSU make it another brutal year. A 8-3 regular season would be considered good but it's not what the alumni want. They expect a top 10 finish and this team going deep into the playoffs. We just don't see it. With the loss of two of the best offensive players to ever wear the Orange and Blue and a ton of young talent the Gators will win their share of games, but it will be a struggle to do so.

(AP) - With the temperature reaching a sweltering 90 degrees, 90,000 Gator fans tried to stay cool while watching Florida's opening season win of 48-24 over the visiting Wolfpac.

Running back Salvatore Stevens showed Gator haters that he can be the man this season after running for 213 yards and 3 TD's, while adding another 34 yards via the air and 2 more touchdowns.

The Gator offense racked up 608 total yards, 38 first downs, and held the ball for almost 40 minutes. Their balanced game plan constantly kept the Wolfpac defense off guard the entire game.

The Gator defense also played well, holding UNR to -1 yards total rushing for the day. The only downfall was a 73 yard touchdown they allowed on a catch and run due to a missed tackle. Sophomore DE Jon Stewart had 2 sacks and sophomore LB Harry Dalton had 5 tackles and an interception.

Coach had this to say after the game. "I'm very pleased with how some of the new starters played. Mike (Kirby) played well, Salvatore was an absolute beast, and our young d-line played well. We need to work on our defensive backs though. Next week we have UNLV at home for our final tune-up before the SEC schedule starts."

(AP - The Swamp) - For the 2nd straight week the Gators faced a Nevada team, this time the UNLV Rebels came rolling into town. This time though instead of the sun that both teams are used too, a heavy rain drenched the field and turned it into a mud bowl. In the end though, the Gators, powered behind QB Mike Kirby's 5 passing TD's, easily prevailed 45-20.

Last week's offensive star RB Sal Stevens rushed for 119 yards on 26 attempts. He caught another 5 passes for 47 yards and added another receiving touchdown on his season. Overall the offense racked up 592 yards, 37 first downs, and held the ball for almost 36 minutes.

The hard hitting defense used the rain to its advantage, causing 6 Rebel fumbles on the day. The Gators did allow UNLV RB Jeremy Freeman to run for 114 yards and 1 TD though, something which coach addressed after the game.

"We are pleased to start the season 2-0. Granted the opponents have not been top notch teams, but it gives us a good idea where we stand. Our offense is playing well, Sal (Stephens) continues to amaze me whenever he gets the ball, and our special teams are creating big plays. Our defense this week though had a tough time stopping the run. We have an off week coming up where hopefully we can work some kinks out before we take on the rest of the SEC."

Upcoming week is a bye for the Gators. Week 4 Auburn travels to The Swamp.

(AP - Gainesville, FL) - The SEC schedule kicked off this weekend in a big game featuring two Top 25 teams. The 3-0 Auburn Tigers came into The Swamp to take on the 3-0 Florida Gators. The Gator fans packed the stands, with 90,000+ in attendance, and enjoyed a nice overcast day where the temperature only reached 81 degrees.

The 1st quarter didn't give the Florida faithful much to cheer about though. A field goal followed by a safety gave Auburn a 5-0 lead going into the 2nd quarter. Florida got on the board with a 19 yard field goal but Auburn returned the kick for 98 yards to the Gator 4 yard line. David Nicholas then caught a four yard touchdown pass from Lonnie Kenney to give the Tigers a 12-3 lead with 13 minutes left before the half.

The Gators kicked another field goal, got the ball back, went on a long drive and finally took the lead 13-12 on backup running back Randal Hall's 3-yard touchdown scamper. On the next Auburn play from scrimmage a jarring hit knocked the ball from HB Gary Smith and Florida recovered with just under 2 minutes left in the half. Three plays later Florida star HB Sal Stevens caught a short pass and ran all of one yard to give Florida a 20-12 halftime lead.

The 3rd quarter was more fireworks as Florida took a 27-12 lead on another Stevens touchdown before the Tigers clawed back to five, down 27-22. Florida had another nice drive that ended in a FG and once again Tiger halfback Gary Smith fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Florida. Three plays later, on the last play of the 3rd quarter, the Gators scored to take a 37-22. Two minutes into the 4th Gator wide out Bert Worley took a punt and returned in 53 yards to the house, giving the Gators a 44-22 lead which turned out to be the final score.

After the game coach had this to say. "We are happy to get a win against a Top 25 team. We didn't start out very well but in the end we outscored them 41-10 over the final 3 quarters to get the victory. Sal had another great game, adding two more touchdowns to give him eight on the season. Unfortunately Mike (QB Kirby) took some hard hits out there. The two interceptions and fumble he gave up have to be addressed. Next week we can't make those type of mistakes or we will get beat."

Next week Florida travels to #4 LSU, while Auburn is at #6 Ole Miss.

(AP : Death Valley) - In the battle of the SEC East vs. West the #5 Florida Gators traveled to #4 LSU to take on the Tigers today. 92,300 packed the stands hoping to see the home team come away with a victory. Instead they had to go home disappointed after the Gators snuck away with a 30-25 victory.

HB Sal Stevens rushed for 2 TD's, and kicker Julian Wilkerson continued his perfect season going 3-3 on FG's and 3-3 on extra points to help lift the Gators to victory. Florida built an early 17-3 lead but the Tigers closed it to 17-16 halfway through the 3rd quarter. A short Stephens TD run, and 2 FG's though gave Florida a 30-19 late into the 4th quarter that was too much for LSU to overcome.

After the game coach had this to say. "We are very happy with our guys today. To play at LSU, one of the best teams in the country, and get a win is outstanding. Our guys played tough and it was a great win."

Next week the Gators play at home vs. undefeated #9 Ole Miss. In related news star HB Sal Stevens was suspended for his 1.91 GPA and will miss the game. Apparently there was a mix-up with the AD over allocation of study time hours and now Stevens has to pay the price. Coach G was visibly distraught when he found this out after his press conference and raced off to have a word with the bosses.

(AP) - In the game of the week 5-0 Ole Miss traveled to the Swamp to take on the 4-0 Gators. Both teams had top 10 rankings and aspirations of high ranked playoff seeds at the end of the year.

Unfortunately for the Gators the Rebs scored 11 points in the 4th quarter, including a 32 yard field goal by K Gordon Valencia with :10 left to propel them to a 18-15 victory. The Gators high scoring offense which had scored almost 40+ points in each previous game did not score one touchdown on the day, all their scoring came on 5 Julian Wilkenson field goals.

It was another overcast day as 90,000 fans packed the stands once again. The story of the game was Florida Heisman candidate HB Sal Stephens suspension due to grades. In his place though HB Randall Hall ran for 122 yards, and caught four passes for 99 yards. QB Mike Kirby was once again under 60% completions and threw 1 interception.

The defense played well, holding Ole Miss to only 301 total net yards. They also intercepted Rebels QB William Cunningham two times.

Coach had this to say after the game. "I'm very disappointed for the guys on this one. The coaching staff/AD takes full responsibility. We let them down by missing the boat preparing this week. I take my hat off to Ole Miss. They are a good team and came to our house and beat us. I wish them luck the rest of the way."

Next week the 4-1 Gators travel to take on the 4-1 Tennessee Volunteers while Ole Miss gets the week off to celebrate.

(AP) - Over 100,000 fans were on hand today as the 4-1 Tennessee Volunteers welcomed the 4-1 Florida Gators. In a high yardage but low scoring affair they went home upset as the Gators came from behind for a 17-10 victory.

The Gator defense held Tenn QB Aaron Bernard to under 50% completion percentage, intercepted him twice, and kept the Volunteers out of the end zone on their final drive to help the Gators hold on to the victory.

Coach had this to say after the game. "We are pleased with the defense. They gave up almost 400 yards but didn't break. SS (William) Hill played a great game with 10 tackles, 8 solo, with two of those huge hits in the backfield. Our offense has been hurting since Sal (Stephens) was suspended but hopefully we can get him back after the bye."

Next week Florida is idle while Tennessee is at #2 Ole Miss.
