Burning Up The Desert: A Diamondbacks Franchise

Well I am back, although this time not with football. This time I am going to be rolling in MLB 08 with one of my favorite teams of all time, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Expect nothing but the best I have to offer with this story; and I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I have reporting on it. This is also posted on MaddenMania, just so there is no confusion. There will be some starting posts cut out on here, due to not being able to always edit posts like on MaddenMania.

JOHNSON A CASUALTY OF AGE IN ARIZONA
Randy Johnson released from Arizona; reason is age

[top]Johnson winding up to deliver a pitch in Cincinnati. [bottom]Johnson watches as a deep fly ball dies out at the warning track.

TUSCON, AZ (AP)Today there was some breaking news out of the Arizona Diamondbacks training facility. It appears that after a long struggle with ownership about Randy Johnson and his position on the team has come to an abrupt end.

Johnson had finally come back to Arizona after spending two seasons in New York, one of which he experienced good results, and then the next very average results. 2007 was the return of the Big Unit to Arizona where he spent most of the season injured, going 4-3 in 10 games. Some of the troubles are contributed to the age of Johnson and the fact that most 44 year olds begin to drop in productivity, especially strong armed pitchers. Johnson has had many great seasons in the league, but many believe that those years are now behind him. Although Johnson is nearing the 300 win mark, it will have to be with a team other then Arizona.

Randy was finally given his walking papers earlier today when a long battle between upper management and the coaching staff finally came to a head and Bob Melvin was finally given his way. Although the release of Johnson had nothing to do with his relationship with Melvin, who many believed both had a good working relationship with one another, but rather it was an age decision. Randy Johnson was available for comment after leaving the spring training facility with his belongings in hand.

“I can understand their decision on the matter, but to say I am not angry with how it was all done would be lying. I just wish this didn't get as public as it did, I have great respect for this organization and everything that it has done for me. I am sure that there are going to be other teams out there that need my arm, and I am glad that the Diamondbacks have given me the chance to pursue my own options rather then trade me.”

Bob Melvin was available to comment a little after the Diamondbacks came off the practice field, and had some interesting words for the media.

“Randy Johnson is a great guy, we have no problem with him, but when push comes to shove we want younger players on the team. We have no doubt that he can still pitch, but we have some young guys in the farm that can do what he can. We feel that Johnson will find a job elsewhere and we hope for the best for him.”

            2008 SPRING TRAINING

DIAMONDBACKS HITTING IS THE BRIGHT SPOT IN SPRING

The Diamondbacks hitters were burning up pitchers; unfortunately opposing batters were doing the same

[top]Brandon Webb will be the staff ace in 2008, looking to improve on a rocky spring. [bottom] Dan Haren will be the #2 starter, and will compliment Webb perfectly.

[top]Chris Young is going to be looked at to be the source of power in the batting order in 2008. [bottom]Upton must improve on a poor spring average to stay in the field come the regular season.

Even though the Diamondbacks finished spring training with an impressive 17-11 record, there is a lot left to be desired of the pitching staff. Many of the wins can be contributed to the great hitting that was displayed by the young bats in Arizona.

Brandon Webb, staff ace was looking to be the best pitcher coming into the spring and although that looked to be the case, there is a lot of things that the coaching staff would like him to improve on. Webb ended the spring with an impressive 5-0 record in 6 starts, but that is not the concern of the staff, the concern is just how sloppy he was in picking up those wins. Brandon finished the spring with a poor 4.00 ERA, something that needs to improve going into the regular season. The offense will not be able to put up the big numbers all the time to get by and its going to be up to Webb to fine tune his pitching a little more. The 4 homers allowed in 6 starts is also a concern, although he is not the only one with that problem. Dan Haren, the pickup from Oakland also had a rough start, 2-1 in the spring and being hammered 6 times in 6 starts for homers. A problem that needs to be solved in the first couple starts of the season.

Augie Ojeda was the surprise performer on the team this spring with an impressive .439 average, almost .100 over the next closest hitter on the team, Orlando Hudson. Although not a fast player, and certainly not the most powerful man on the team Augie makes a great low end hitter as he is more then capable of brining in runners that hit in the 4, 5, and 6 spots in the lineup. And as long as the 33 year old continues to play this well he will be the starter for the Diamondbacks at shortstop the whole season and Stephen Drew will just have to continue waiting his turn for his chance to finally be starting shortstop.

The power of the lineup, which is a no doubter is in the bats of non other then Chris Young, who was projected to be a leadoff man, but will be dropped into the number 3 spot come the start of the season. Young had an impressive 2007 season with the Diamondbacks hitting 32 homers, however the concern with Young is that he needs to bring up his average which was only .237, far from what everyone is looking for out of him. If Chris can manage to bring up his batting average to around .280 then he will no doubt be one of the most dangerous hitters in the lineup. The next best power hitter in the lineup was Stephen Drew, also with 5 home runs. The unfortunate thing however for Drew is that he will be playing behind Augie Ojeda who will be eating up the vast majority of playing time.

Around the league many players were able to put up very impressive numbers, and unfortunately for the Diamondbacks, most of those players make their home in the National League. Pat Burrell and Prince Fielder both had great power hitting springs, hitting 9 homers each, respectively. However its Milwaukee's J.J. Hardy that had the best spring of most players overall, with a .362 average, 7 home runs and an amazing 30 runs batted in he was the most dangerous player in the league. However the most impressive and possibly most frightening stat is, Jose Reyes' 30 steals in 30 games. This has many teams shaking at the thought of him getting on base, and with great concern as Reyes getting on base, by spring standards almost assures you he will be stealing at least one base per game, which will lead to a runner in scoring position for the deadly Mets batters to take advantage of.

                  2008 DIAMONDBACKS ROSTER PREVIEW

                  BATTING - PITCHING - RESERVES
                  RED = ROOKIE

Over the course of just a few shorts days after spring training ended something drastic changed in the mind set of the Diamondbacks coaching staff. At the end of spring it seemed that everyone on the team was singing the praises of shortstop Augie Ojeda and today with the official release of the opening day rosters was name was very boldly left off the list. Augie, although having a great hitting spring has been placed on the bench and Stephen Drew has been given the starting job out at short. The reason given at media day was that Stephen Drew will be placed in the fifth spot in the batting order, as he has good power and ability to bring home Jackson and Young while hitting for a standard average.

That wasn't the end of surprises when the batting order was announced however as Eric Byrnes has been upped all the way to lead off on the team. Coming our of the sprint it seemed destined that Hudson would be lead off followed by Justin Upton. But in a surprise move Byrnes was placed on top of Hudson in the top spot followed by Justin Upton. Hudson was moved all the way down to the seventh spot in the order to steady the lineup and allow all parts of the order to ave some speed in it. Chris Snyder the young catcher will round out the order at the bottom batting either. However he isn't to be taken lightly as he can still hit very well. Although he won't be driving in a lot of runs if he can hit for a good average it opens up the chances of the one and two hitters to bring home some runs.

Finally the middle of the lineup, where there were no major surprises other then just a couple hitters switching around where they will be batting. Chris Young was projected to be the clean up man, but has been moved to third in the order where his speed and power will be even better utilized. He will be protected from the clean up man Conor Jackson. Young should not be walked all that often as few pitchers would want to go around him and end up with and equally talented hitter in Conor Jackson at the plate. Mark Reynolds will round out the lineup batting sixth for the Diamondbacks coming into the season. He has just enough power in his bat to bring home any runners still left on the bags after Drew. Going into 2008 this might be the most complete lineup from top to bottom that the Diamondbacks have ever had, and now its a matter of time till we start seeing some results.

The starting pitchers for the Diamondbacks could be one of two this this season, great or average, and for this team to win they will have to be great more often then not. Brandon Webb and Dan Haren will of course be the anchors to the starting pitcher both expected to easily gain 15 wins in the season. Webb is however also expected to challenge for the Cy Young award come seasons end. After those two however it becomes a little choppy in what is going to happen Micah Owings had a surprising spring with a low ERA, and if he can continue that play into the regular season he will be a very solid number three pitcher. Juan Gutierrez and Edgar Gonzalez will be ending out the rotation, that many people say would have been stronger with Johnson, but as long as each can get ten wins this season they should be more then enough at the end of the rotation.

The bullpen is strong for the Diamondbacks, with most of them having an average 3.00 ERA coming out of spring it looks like they should be the strong point for the pitching. Tony Pena earned the setup role after an impressive spring where he had just a 2.40 ERA, very good average by any standards of pitching. Brandon Lyon will be the unquestioned closer moving forward and after a spring that saw him post a 1.88 ERA and eight saves it is no wonder that he will be back closing the door in the ninth. His 18 strikeouts to only 4 walks also has the pitching coaches drooling that he has finally found his stuff to be a very effective closer, something any team hoping to make the playoffs need.

PITCHING DOMINATES IN THREE GAME SERIES SWEEP
Webb and Haren pitch back to back complete games; Byrnes catches fire

[top]Justin Upton hits the game tying home run in game one of the series. [bottom]Mark Reynolds trots home to score the game winning run for the Diamondbacks.

[top]Aaron Harang on a strikeout pitch to Upton one of his 5 on the day. [bottom]Brandon Webb delivers a pitch too home, on his way to picking up his first win of the season.

On opening day it was a tale of two pitchers in Cincinnati, one that looked like we would see a part of major league history, and another that was just trying to keep his team in the game. Brandon Webb was the later of the two pitchers. There is little question that Webb is one of the best pitchers in baseball but even good pitchers give up hits, its the great pitchers that don't allow runs. And twice early in the game Webb was faced with Corey Patterson bunting for a single, and then following that up quickly with a quick steal of second. Both times though Webb came back with strikeouts and great pitching to get out of the innings. Aaron Harang, was showing why he is one of the best pitchers in the national league, taking a no hitter into the 7th inning of the game. Although he was saved by some great defensive play, especially by Adam Dunn who robbed a sure double from Upton in the 4th inning. Brandon Phillips RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, which would hold up until the ninth inning. Things were looking bad for the Diamondbacks, with one out already in the inning it was up to the unlikely man Justin Upton, and he answered the call, this time all Adam Dunn could do was turn around and look at the ball fly out. With the tie in hand and the tenth coming up, the bases were loaded and Eric Byrnes was up for the winning hit and delivered. Lyon came in for the last out and closed the door on a win for Webb in an intense opening day win for Arizona, and a heartbreaking loss for the Reds.

Unfortunately for the Reds they would be up against another ace in Dan Haren, and he was on his game after a days break. And this time the Diamondbacks bats came to the game as well. Bronson Arroyo could not get anything past the Arizona bats early on as he was roughed up early and often. Stephen Drew had the breakout game that everyone in Arizona was hoping he would have, and although he did not hit a homer run he did more then enough to push this team over with a couple runs batted in. It's more then enough to help the team, as every little bit helps out Arizona in the quest to win games. It also doesn't hurt when Dan Haren is on the mound and pitching nearly perfect. Everyone thought that Webb had a great game, however Haren out shined him with a great pitching performance and a complete game shutout, which improved on an already great team ERA, which after this game hovered at 0.46, well less then the league average. A complete game shutout is a great way to pick up a win any time of the season, but to do it in your first game of the season is one of the perfect ways of starting a season.

Game three once again was a return to game one pitching for both teams, the game was another classic with heartbreak in the end. Micah Owings had a great deal of pressure on his shoulders coming into the game, as he was taking over Randy Johnson's spot in the rotation. It was a move that was criticized by everyone in the baseball media, as Johnson was a proven winner and was being cut to make way for an unproven pitcher in Owings. And today Micah showed why he was given the chance, he went seven strong innings, with two earned runs, and seven strikeouts. Much better then anyone could have hoped for. But the Reds had someone on the mound just as good, Cueto went seven strong to match Owings, and only allowed two runs. And going into the ninth it was still tied. And then came Eric Byrnes, and he knew just what to do, and that was hit a game breaking three run shot. The Diamondbacks tacked on a couple more runs and broke it open to a five run game. Arizona hung on to win the game by the same five run margin.
