WSB 2K3 Seattle Mariners Franchise

I picked up WSB 2K3 yesterday and I am starting my Mariners franchise Before I played any games, I tinkered with my team for a bit. I reacquired Ken Griffey Jr. by trading Mike Cameron, John Mabry, Calvin Pickering and 37 pts for him. I then promoted Snelling, Ben Davis, and a scrub to the big team to get my rosters up to 25. I then traded Jamie Moyer, Dan Wilson, Greg Colbrunn, and another player (names escapes me) for Kerry Wood. Moyer was getting old and I wanted another hard thrower to compliment Freddy Garcia. So after all that, I resigned Ichiro to a 2 year 22 BP extension and I am now in the hole 36 BP My opening day lineup looks like this:

2B - Bret Boone
3B - Jeff Cirillo
LF - Randy Winn
CF - Ken Griffey Jr.
RF - Ichiro

SP - Kerry Wood
SP - Freddy Garcia
SP - Joel Pineiro
SP - Ryan Anderson
SP - Soriano

MR - Jeff Nelson
MR - Arthur Rhodes
CP - Sasaki

I will be playing my first game tonight. I traded a lot of players and gave up a lot, but my team is better and has more power. I will make more trades as I see fit...

Aint it cool how you can acquire guys in trades using BP. I thought that was amazing. SO you are all ready in the hole points wise. Should be interesting to see you get out of that. I look forward to seeing your results.

So I finally put my new look Mariners on the field against arch rival Oakland Athletics. Opening day match-up is a dandy - CY Young Winner Barry Zito taking on newly acquired Kerry Wood - out to prove that he can be the ace of the staff.

Well, the match-up really didn't live up to the billing as the Mariners wiped out the A's 12-0. Zito gave up six earned runs in 3.1 innings and really struggled to get batters out. Kerry Wood pitched a complete game shut-out striking out 10 and walking 2 while giving up 9 hits. Edgar Martinez was the player of the game going 3 for 5 with a double., home run, and 4 RBI's. He's desparate to win a World Series.

Overall, an impressive start by the Mariners, who look much stronger in terms of power and injecting some power into a pitching staff that needed it.

Second match-up: Freddy Garcia versus Mark Mulder - yet another potential pitching duel and what a duel it turned out to be.

The Mariners pulled out a hard fought 3-1 win over the A's to go to 2-0 on the year. Mulder pitched 7 strong innings, striking out 4 and walking 1 while giving up 2 runs while Garcia pitched 7 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 13 batters to earn player of the game honors. Bret Boone and Eric Chavez each hit solo home runs. Sasaki stepped into the 9th to earn his 1st save of the season.

I am really enjoying this game right now. The Franchise mode is very sweet and the ability to thrown in money to complete a trade is even cooler because that saves me from giving up roster players and prospects when I could just throw in some money. Now, mind you, I am in the hole right now but if my team continues to do well, I am sure they will be out of it in no time.

Well, at 2-0, I have two more games with the A's. This time, Pineiro took the mound to face Hudson.

The Mariners take their 3rd in a row from the A's by a final of 4-2. Pineiro pitched 6 innings giving up 1 run and striking out 5. Hudson pitched 7 innings, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 3 while walking 1. The player of the game was Ken Griffey Jr. who hit a three run homer to boost the M's to their 3rd win in a row.

After the game, The Mariners earned one budget point to go in the bank so I am -35 now
