    Nigel Cambridge's Coaching Career (CH2K8)

Sacramento State Hornets sign former college player to head coaching position

Sacramento, CA - Talks have finally come to an end, and the speculation is over. The Hornets have picked 27 year-old Nigel Cambridge for the new head coaching job. Nigel was a member of the Ohio Bobcats basketball squad for four years, and has been around the game all his life he says.

"I'm looking to breathe fresh air back into this program. They've had some down years lately, but I'm here to bring basketball back to the forefront."

He brings along assistant coaches Treg Herman and Kelvin Nichols.

Kansas State thumps Sacramento State 82-59

Sacramento, CA - In very unsurprising manner, Kansas State, lead by the preconceived best Freshman in the country, put down Sacramento State in the season opener. From the get go Kansas State was in control, forcing two quick turnovers in the trap for dunks for Michael Beasley. Nothing really changed from that point. Michael Beasley and Bill Walker looked like All-Americans dropping 29 and 21 points respectively. Their defense was tough, as they forced 20 turnovers total.

Sacramento State can be happy about a few things though. Starting forward Donald Thomas put up 12 points and 7 rebounds, being matched up against Beasley most of the night. Starting shooting guard Loren Leath also dropped in 13 points, going 2-5 from the three point line.

      Kansas St. Wildcats:
      M. Beasley: 29 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks, 13-13 free throws
      B. Walker: 21 points, 7 rebounds, 1-1 three pointers
      B. Young: 7 points, 8 assists, 1 turnover

      Sacramento St. Hornets:
      L. Leath: 13 points, 4 rebounds, 7 turnovers
      D. Thomas: 12 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist
      J. Eller: 7 points, 7 rebounds

Southern Utah pulls off comeback against Hornets, 68-61

Sacramento, CA - Starting the new season off 0-2 is not what coach Cambridge wanted. Having a double digit lead and letting it slip away? Definitely not what coach Cambridge wanted. The Hornets had gotten an eight point lead at the half led by Loren Leath's three point barrage, hitting four in the first half alone, but the game would end in a loss. Second half the team went cold, Leath would go 1-7 in the second half, after going 4-7 in the first. "He started chucking there, and that's what we can't have, shot selection is now an issue." Said coach Cambridge. Southern Utah downed the Hornets 68-61.

"We're a young team learning how to win," said Cambridge, "a lot of these guys haven't been in a position to win in a long time, and we're trying to change that culture this year."

Spirits were low after today's finish, coach Cambridge leaving the floor with his head down.

        Southern Utah Eagles:
        N. Adepoju: 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists
        D. Baker: 22 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists
        N. Livi: 9 points, 10 assists, 3 turnovers

        Sacramento State Hornets:
        L. Leath: 19 points, 2 assists, 5-14 three pointers
        J. Williams: 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists
        J. Eller, 10 points, 5 rebounds, 1 block

Eddie Sutton gives young coach a lesson as his Dons get past the Hornets, 67-55.

Sacramento, CA - Eddie Sutton may have left the Big XII's Ok. State, but a smaller conference doesn't mean he can't coach. Poor shooting was today's problem, was the Hornets (0-3) fell to the University of San Francisco (2-1). From the gun Sacramento State seemed lifeless, Loren Leath put in another bad shooting night, going 2-10 from the three point line. The Hornets were beat down on the boards tonight, and in a vicious way. The Dons had a 31 to 19 edge in rebounding. All of that, combined with shooting over 50% from the floor, put the Dons in position to win.

"The way I see it is this. This is college basketball, anything can happen I think we all know that. Something needs to happen with this team, something needs to happen now, before this ship sinks too deep to sail." These were the coach's words when he got home with the team and off the bus.

USF's point guard, Manny Quezada, gets ahead on the break for the bucket against the Hornets.

          Dons:
          M. Strong: 19 points, 2 assists, 3-5 three pointers
          D. Lowhorn: 13 points, 13 rebounds, 2 steals
          M. Quezada: 13 points, 9 assists, 0 turnovers

          Hornets:
          L. Leath: 14 points, 1 assists, 2-10 three pointers
          D. Thomas: 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1-2 three pointers
          J. Williams: 10 points, 4 steals, 2 blocks
