    Under pressure: A goaltending BAP (NHL 09)

    Alright. So I have one of these running over on IGN, but I lack the ability to post pictures and such, and was directed here. I figure it's a good call. The stories will be the same, so you should only have to check here if you've got any interest. The only difference should be the markup.

    ==============================
    Brendan Gordon entered what had been his home for the past few years. Playing next to the Trailblazers in the Rose Garden, Gordon's WHL championship winning Portland Winterhawks said their goodbyes today at the Rose Quarter. Gordon, at the age of 19, would not be playing for another year with the team that had become so loved in the city, and would soon enter the NHL entry draft. Hands were shook, hugs were given, and every personal contact number was made public to the leaving players.

    "If you ever, ever need a place to stay when you visit, hit me up," said the soon to be starting goaltender, Kurtis Mucha (moo-KAH). Mucha and Gordon had become closer to brothers than any of the four that Kurtis lived with.

    Nodding, Gordon departed after one last, long handshake round with his coaches. He had left his car with the Muchas, so he paid $2.00 for the bus fare and headed towards the airport. Lugging his favored Nike Bauer Supremes down the bus aisle, he picked an open row of seating and stashed his gear. He thumbed through a few papers he needed to make the necessary flights, and sat back thinking about what the scouts had said.

    (Gordon's positional play makes up for his average speed and athleticism. Posted impressive numbers in the WHL, obviously numbers good enough to take his team through the playoffs. Gordon is a diamond in the rough, and will likely be drafted in the second or third round.)

    'Not bad', he thought, 'not bad at all.'

    =======Two days later========

    Gordon had made it to the scouting combine, but encountered a pretty big hitch. The Supremes he had played with for the past two years were lost in the baggage transfer. Unable to find them anywhere, he had been compensated for them in full by a very apologetic clerk. Gordon made his way to the nearest ATM and withdrew another large chunk of change, and hit every store he could find selling hockey gear. He settled, finally, on a pair of blue and white one95's, but was upset about the loss of his beloved pads.

    As any goalie would know, playing in pads that haven't been broken in is not a particularly enjoyable experience. Being a goalie, he knew that fact very, very well. He made his way to the official lodging of the rookies to be, but his bad mood seemed evident to all the others, and he wasn't making too many friends.

    ======Fast forward past the scouting========

    He hadn't performed well, and he knew it. Bad equipment made a small difference, but he had been overwhelmed. His potential second pick rating felt as if it had gone down to a fourth round. He gained some ground at the end of the combine's tests, even stopping all 18 shots he faced in a scrimmage, but the damage had been done.

      ======Draft Day======

      Nerves were at their peak as Brendan Gordon searched for his belt. His roommate, Anton Gustafsson, stood in the doorway, aching with silent laughter. The belt was hanging from his index finger as he watched Gordon crawl along the floor, searching the beds.

      Anton was the son of Capitals legend Bengt Gustafsson, and had met Gordon by force when he found that he was paired to a room with the grumpy goalie from the night before. After he had finally calmed himself, Gordon and Anton had become fairly fast friends.

      Gordon looked up in a fury to find his friend of the past few days bent sideways, laughing as he gave back the belt that had eluded the young goaltender's grasp for the past 15 minutes.

      "Not funny. You know how weird goalies get. Just remember that we still have to spend one more night together, and this time you can pass out drunk."

      Anton's face went from laughter to one of mocking worry, and he helped his friend up from the floor and walked with him down the hallway of the 15th floor.

      =====The First Round=====

      Gordon's name wasn't called, as was to be expected. The first draft pick was Steven Stamkos, who went to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nobody in the whole of Ottawa was remotely surprised, and the draft carried on.

      Anton Gustafsson had been picked, and like his father before him, he had become a Washington Capital.

      =====The Second Round======

      Again, Gordon's name had missed the boards. Not a huge surprise, but a slight disappointment as he sat uncomfortably next to his mother Diane, and the Mucha household. They had flown out to attend the drafting of their "adopted" son, and Kurtis' mother seemed just as worried as his own.

      =====The Third Round=====

      Gordon was disappointed now. He had expected a third round pick, as had most of the people around him. Sighing, he figured that his combine play had hurt him more than he expected, and he silently cursed United Airlines flight #842.

      =====The Fourth Round=====

      Almost at the end of his rope, Gordon felt like giving up on his draft hopes this year. He'd have to go play somewhere in Finland and enter next year. He pondered how to get there best when he heard his name over the loud speaker. Cheering rose up in his seating area, and he stood up confused and started to make his way down to the stage. He was halfway down the stairs before it had occurred to him to look at who had drafted him. He looked up and saw a few faces beaming at him, holding up the jersey he hoped to wear in the years to come:

      He sprinted down the rest of the stairs and shook hands with the Wild GM, donning his jersey with a grin worthy of the newspapers, despite his late pick. His career was close to taking off...

        Lofty Goals

        Gordon had survived the tryouts and camp, and signed a one year deal at the cap minimum with the Minnesota Wild. He had only talked to the General Manager during the contract negotiations, but it was clear to him that he wouldn't be playing in the NHL right away. He didn't expect to, and seemed thankful that he wouldn't be going straight from WHL talent to taking on the shots of Alexander Ovechkin.

        He was sized for his Houston Aeros jersey the following day. Afterwards, he was introduced to a second man, accompanied by an label-less book.

        "Okay, Mr. Gordon, it's time to talk equipment," said the stranger.

        Brendan's eyes lit up immediately, like a kid in a candy shop. The chance to order some Minnesota Wild Supremes was too good to pass up on, but he looked at the rest of the padding anyway. The team paid for it, the least he could do was look. Thumbing through the pages, he came very close to picking a pair of green and red Itechs, but he moved on.

        He came to the Bauer Supremes, and opened his mouth to say "These ones. These right here," when something stopped him. On the page was a pair of gold one95's, with red and green stripes. They looked too good to pass up on, and he picked them without hesitation. As he left, he wondered to himself if the picking of his new equipment was some kind of symbolism, demonstrating the real entry to his professional career.

        =====The start of the season=====

        The rest of the offseason was pretty mundane. Practices were normal, and a bond had been formed between the older AHLers, and the new blood. The pre-season had also gone off without a hitch, but the thought looming in everyone's mind was the rookie starting at goal.

        Gordon walked first down the hallway out of the locker room, pausing to take it all in. Fans all over Houston had come to watch the Aeros, and Gordon was jittery. Behind him, his captain told the team not to be worried. "This may be the opener, but we've got 81 more to go after this. Don't get ahead of yourselves."

        (Editors note: I already played games one and two of this before I had decided to document it, so there aren't too many details I can remember. Basically, I was destroyed by Portland 5-1, and then took Hershey down in their home opener 4-2, facing 21 shots in the process.)

        =====Finding a rythm=====

        After the first two games, Gordon felt pretty normal. His first game had gone terribly, terribly wrong, but he recovered like a true professional should. The third game would come later tonight, and that was the true test. The Aeros headed to Chicago to play the Wolves, Atlanta's AHL affiliate. The time was approaching quickly, and he donned his one95s and tried to get focused...

        He led the way like normal through the tunnel, Locke right behind him. Music thudding, he hopped over the dasher and made his way to his crease, adjusting the ice around him to his needs. Checking his water bottles, he warmed up with his teammates and got ready to face the first shot of the game...

        (Game ensues)

        After the first period, Gordon had only encountered two shots to his team's seven. They had capitalized on two of those seven shots, and already had a commanding lead.

        During the second period, a deflected shot clanked off the post as the Aeros killed a penalty. Maintaining composure, Gordon rid the crease of such annoyances, and play continued.

        After two, Gordon had faced more shots than his team had dished out, stopping 6 to his team's 3. Nobody had scored, and Gordon had been spectacular to keep it this way. Players found him rocketing across the crease to stop more than one well placed one-timer.

        With the third period coming to a close, Olvecky potted an empty netter to seal the game. All that remained is.....

        Game over! Gordon pumped his fist in triumph, stopping 15 shots of 15 total, and gaining his first career shutout. The Aeros won 3-0.

        (NHL Insider says: Gordon played in position the entire game, and knew when to cover and when to pass the puck. Shutting his opponent out is no small feat, but it helped that he had faced far fewer shots than his opponent.)

        Pleased, Gordon returned to the hotel already in the midst of a celebration. The team's second win of three games, and Gordon's first career shutout made the night worth celebrating. They had beat down the Chicago Wolves, and all seemed good.

                  Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to the ice arena later for some skating, but I should be able to crank out an update tonight.

                  ==============

                  Things were on the up for the Houston Aeros. Sure, they had lost their last game in a shootout, but the team played as one, coming back from a two goal hole to tie it up. Gordon and his comrades sat cheering on the bench through the entire game, and they had escaped with a point. The team had held together and now he had a chance to really set them apart from the lucky teams, should they take their next game.

                  He had run with the team the morning of the game. They jogged, laughed, and all-in-all sounded like your average sports team. At the end of the exercise, Gordon had changed and left, going out towards the hotel. He had never been too far outside of Portland, except for minor traveling in the WHL. Never did he expect to see himself on the other side of the continent. The Lake Erie monsters were his next test, and a test they would be.

                  The team and coaches had studied the Monsters as best they could in the past few days. The only edge they felt that they would have over Erie would be goaltending, and that was only if Gordon would remain consistent. Lake Erie was very capable of sniping the rookie straight out of his crease and on to the bench, and Gordon knew it. Thinking of it while he walked back to his room disturbed him a little, but the desire to prove himself seemed to stop such thoughts from rattling him.

                  =====Game time=====

                  Getting ready to emerge into a hostile environment is tough, especially when you're doing it on purpose. No sane man would cast himself into a pit of hungry lions.

                  "Well, consider me insane," Gordon mumbled, and he hopped on to the ice of the Quicken Loans Arena.

                  The boos lasted only as long as it took for the home team to make their way out, at which point the fans changed tack quickly. Cheers and screams came pouring out of every corner of the arena, flooding everyone at the ice surface in crazed passion and excitement.

                  Locke moved towards the circle, staring down the Monster before him. Getting ready to take the draw, the game was on.

                  [The game will be played later. I've got some college books to look up, so I don't feel like I'd have the focus needed to play goalie.]

                    This storyline is quite epic, and the format is great. Keep up the great work Brendan, this is written extremely well.

                        The whole team's nerves were high, but the game ended in a rare double shutout. Gordon and the Aeros had been outshot all game, until the very end of overtime, and Gordon registered 16 saves on the night, but it would be the weakness of his blocker that lost them the game. He had stopped the first shot of the shootout, but let in the next two. He held on strong near the end, but nobody could beat Bacashihua. Frustrated, Gordon packed his things and silently waited for the plane to take them back to Houston.

                        Stats:

                        Shots:
                        1-4 LE
                        9-8 LE
                        13-15 LE
                        19-16 HOU

                        Shootout:
                        LE: XGGX
                        HOU: XXGXX

                        Gordon registered a second star rating in tonight's game.

                              My worry with more in-game pictures is that once I hit the online limit for my profile, they'll start being deleted. After that, the first few posts won't have their pictures anymore, and newcomers won't see anything.

                              Of course, it's not like I have any newcomers anyway.
