Re: The Rambling Wreck - NCAA 2009

By every possible measure, 2008 shapes up as a year of change for Georgia Tech. With new head coach Paul Johnson comes the adoption of the spread-option offense and the exit of defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta, who deftly turned the Yellow Jackets into a perennial nuisance for the rest of the ACC. As if all of that upheaval isn't unsettling enough, the defense has lost three of last year's four All-ACC performers and the special-teams unit must replace Durant Brooks and Travis Bell, one of the best punter-kicker combinations in the history of the program. But Johnson isn't looking to rebuild, or take a step back to take a leap forward. He wants to win now, and why not? After what he did at Navy, this year should be a breeze. However, with so many changes, he's being allowed a bit of a grace period. The shcedule is hardly a breeze, with conference battles against Boston College and Virginia Tech in September, but once the Tech offense starts to work, opposing defensive coordinators will have nightmares. At least that's Johnson's goal.

    Offense:
Taylor Bennett, last year's starting quarterback, has transfered, so Josh Nesbitt is the clear-cut leader to become coach Paul Johnson's first signalcaller at Tech, if he can get past a groin injury. He possesses the athleticism to run the spread-option attack. He ran for 339 yards as a true freshman and flashed the burst and escapability that make him a natural for the new scheme. The interior of the line mustbe rebuilt, and top RB Tashard Choice has to be replaced. His successor is likely to be Jonathan Dwyer, who raced for 436 yards and nine scores as a freshman in '07. Even with all of the uncertainty, Johnson has produced with far less talented players at Navy.

    Defense:
With all of the attention on the transitioning offense, the potential of the D-line has been overlooked; it should be among the best in the country. DE Michael Johnson and DT Vance Walker almost certainly will be first-round NFL draft picks next year, while big Darryl Richard is a major presence on the inside. DE Derrick Morgan would be the bright new star if it weren't for the other three future pros around him. However, Jon Tenuta's departure leaves a sizable hole, as do the losses of DEs Darrell Robertson and AdamnOliver, LB Philip Wheeler and S Jamal Lewis. New coordinator Dave Wommack will have to revamp a good secondary that was gutted by graduation. The LB corps needs untested prospects Kyle Jackson, Anthony Barnes and Brad Jefferson to shine, but they'll get plenty of help from the front four.

    Special Teams:
There's no underestimating the impact of losing P Durant Brooks and PK Travis Bell, who both were named first-team All-ACC selections in'07. Mohamed Yahiaoui is inline to be the punter and placekicker, but he will get challenged this summer by a handful of walk-ons.

        Mauling the Hapless
Georgia Tech starts 2008 with an
        impressive win over FCS Southeast.

        Georgia Tech - 84
        FCS Southeast - 7

Atlanta, GA - Paul Johnson's first game as Head Coach of the Rambling Wreck was quite an Offensive showing. Many people believed that it would take a few games to implement the Spread-Option attack in Tech's offense, but in their first game they put out 84 points. Jonathan Dwyer, Josh Nesbitt, and Jaybo Shaw all were key parts to the Offensive Gameplan. The ACC better be aware of the Yellow Jackets, they play Boston College next week.

        Watch out for the Wreck!!!!
