NHL 09 ~ The Beginning of the Ron Wilson Legacy

    SPORTS

    Photos by Tony Bock/Toronto Star - June 10th, 2008

Kevin McGran, June 10 [AP] - Richard Peddie formally announced today that the Toronto Maple Leafs had hired Ron Wilson, former San Jose head coach who was unexpectedly fired in San Jose last year after taking them to the conference final. He seemed excited about being the first step in the re-building of this franchise. He also seemed excited to be involved in the re-building. The Leafs also announced today that Cliff Fletcher would be staying on as the General Manager for at least one more season, there are still many speculations that after this year Brian Burke will be coming into help overhaul the team.

Kevin McGran, June 21 [AP] - Yesterday the Leafs made an astounding aquisition when they traded up to the fifth slot on the draft board, and drafted 18 year old defenseman Luke Schenn. "I like Luke's mix of size, mobility and offensive skill, I think he can really bring a lot to the table for our franchise." said Cliff Fletcher after the round yesterday.

Kevin McGran August 1 [AP] - A public press conference was held today with Cliff Fletcher to showcase all of his new acquisitions that include bringing back team captain Mats Sundin for at least two more years Mikhail Grabovski, Niklas Hagman, Jeff Finger, Curtis Joseph and Ryan Hollweg all from the NHL's free agency. Cliff Fletcher also dealt a lot this summer with the European leagues bringing in former Leaf draft pick Nikolai Kulemin, All Star defenseman Jonas Frogren and brother of current Detroit Red Wing Valtteri Filppula, Ilari Filppula. Cliff Fletcher and Ron Wilson along with the rest of the Toronto Maple Leafs executive members seemed excited about this years young and energetic team. "I can't wait to see how they produce on the ice." said Richard Peddie about this years squad.

Kevin McGran, October 2 [AP] - Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin successfully returns, although later than expected, to the ice after a long decision whether or not he would continue with his NHL career. The Leafs begin their season Thursday the 9th as they will try to play spoiler to the Red Wings banner raising ceremony for their Stanley Cup championship last season.

          The Leaf Report

The Leafs made one change to the lineup today that saw Alexei Ponikarovksy wearing a suit while Ryan Hollweg saw his first ice time since his suspension. The Leafs just squeaked by Montreal today in a tight game that saw fantastic goaltending at either end of the ice and it seems as if Toskala is making his statement early.

During a press conference after yesterday's game with Cliff Fletcher and Ron Wilson, Fletcher spoke about the Leafs captain and his unexpected return to the Leafs and his early season success. Then Ron Wilson who had been silent the entire press conference exploded about Ryan Hollweg's violent display during the game, he stated that there was zero reason for 2 of his 3 fights and the stupid penalties he took, including the major and game misconduct in the third were, "absolutely ridiculous, I will not have that on my team and I have officially stated to management that I want him off of my roster, whatever it takes, and he will not see anymore ice-time with me coaching this team."

Dennis Wittmann, Sports Analyst - October 12, 2008

It didn't take long, only a few hours actually, to find Ryan Hollweg a new home. After Ron Wilson's outburst about Hollweg's scrappy and violent performance in yesterday's game against Montreal, the Leafs began to shop him around. This afternoon it was reported that Ryan Hollweg was heading south to Florida and in return the Leafs had acquired a familiar face in Wade Belak. Belak is also a scrappy aggitator but in a more fair sense of it. Wade Belak is quite excited to be heading back to Toronto. "To be honest, Florida was fun, but Canada is my home and it is good to be back/" said Belak after receiving news of the trade, of course this trade still banks on successful physicals.
