From the Ground Up: A Gauntsghost/SabresKings Fantasy Draft (2K7)

Some sort of catastrophe is afoot in the NHL. We don't know what happened here at the associated press, but the word on the street is that the entire league is going to have to pool together their players and draft from the ground up all over again. The cover story used is to promote some sort of equality for hockey markets, making up for the recent recession by giving every team a fighting chance at a Cup for the following year.

The Boston Bruins (Gauntsghost. Hey, give me a break, I have to do all the draft screens and writeups) have snagged the first overall pick in the draft, followed by the LA Kings (SabresKings). Stay here for comprehensive draft details.

    SPOTLIGHT: Boston Bruins
With the first overall pick, the Boston Bruins welcomed Alexander Ovechkin to the team. With their second pick, they selected Jarome Iginla, who was surprisingly still in the pool. The third draft choice went to Marc-Andre Fleury. The projected lines for the Bruins at the start of the season are as follows:

    Alexander Ovechkin(93) - Patrice Bergeron(85) - Jarome Iginla(92)
    Ville Peltonen (75) - Mike Comrie (84) - Petr Sykora (82)
    Rob Zamuner (74) - Derek Roy (79) - Dustin Brown (76)
    Pierre Dagenais (74) - Zach Parise (79) - Anthony Stewart (75)

    Joni Pitkanen (85) - Brian Rafalski (84)
    Ryan Whitney (80) - Tom Preissing (80)
    Cory Sarich (80) - Zbynek Michalek (79)

    Marc-Andre Fleury (85)
    Peter Budaj (79)

The projected statistics for the team have been rated out of 10 by our hockey analysts, and can be seen below.

    OVR - 6
    OFF - 6
    DEF - 6
    SPCL - 7
    GOAL - 5

    SPOTLIGHT: Los Angeles Kings
With the second overall pick, the Kings snuck Joe Thornton away from the rest of the draft pool. Thornton, who has been ranked as the second best player in the league by analysts after a 125 point season, netting 29 goals and 96 assists. With the second pick, they selected Thornton's target and linemate Marian Hossa. The projected lines are as follows:

    Marian Hossa (91) - Joe Thornton (97) - Peter Bondra (82)
    Alexander Frolov (82) - Henrik Sedin (86) - Darren McCarty (76)
    Dustin Penner (75) - Tuomo Ruutu (83) - Fredrik Sjostrom (75)
    J.P. Vigier (74) - Jeff Carter (80) - Jiri Bicek (74)

    Dan Boyle (84) - Andrej Meszaros (82)
    Marek Malik (79) - Keith Ballard (80)
    Christian Erhoff (79) - Karel Rachunek (77)

    Kari Lehtonen (84)
    Tim Thomas (78)

The Kings are poised to be an offensive threat, with dangerous players on just about every line, but their defense is slightly suspect. The overall projections are below:

    OVR - 6
    OFF - 7
    DEF - 5
    SPCL - 6
    GOAL - 4

With the real offseason dealings yet to come, as teams attempt to regain their old fan favorites, or strike out for new ones, a lot is still up for debate as to where players will be when the season starts. For now, stay tuned (yeah, right).

Awesome. I'm pretty happy with that roster, minus McCarty, Vigier, and Bicek, and Rachunek and Malik might wanna GTFO too....

The Boston Bruins have just traded Mike Comrie (C), a round 1 draft pick, and a round 9 draft pick to the Detroit Red Wings for Brad Richards (C). The Bruins, upon making this trade, have increased their OVR and OFF ratings to 7, and Richards will be replacing Bergeron on the first line.

However, in a totally ******** move (Nick....), The LA Kings have acquired Brad Richards immediately, along with a 4th round pick, in exchange for Joe Thornton (And he suggested this. Not me.)

The new lines for both teams, along with ratings, are below.

      Boston:

      Ovechkin - Thornton - Iginla
      Peltonen - Bergeron - Sykora
      Zamuner - Roy - Brown
      Dagenais - Parise - Stewart

      Pitkanen - Rafalski
      Preissing - Sarich
      Whitney - Michalek

      Fleury
      Budaj

      OVR 7
      OFF 8
      DEF 6
      SPCL 7
      GOAL 5

      Los Angeles:

      Hossa - Richards - Bondra
      Frolov - Sedin - McCarty
      Penner - Ruutu - Sjostrom
      Vigier - Carter - Bicek

      Boyle - Meszaros
      Malik - Ballard
      Ehrhoff - Rachunek

      Lehtonen
      Thomas

      OVR 6
      OFF 6
      DEF 5
      SPCL 6
      GOAL 4
