*Legend In The Making* A Jason Skyland Be A Pro

Whenever you think of hockey, you think the fastest sport on earth. Where if you don’t have your guard up at all times, you’ll end up leaving the game on a stretcher. Since I was a little boy, I’ve always loved the fastest game on Earth. Just thinking of it gives me a chill down my spine. This is finally my time to shine. This is my story!
I was already awake, just lying in my bed when my mother came into my room. She noticed that my face looked worried and said “What’s wrong, you look like a wreck”. “I guess, I’m just nervous about the rest of the day” I responded. My day had finally come, the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. I was finally eligible to be drafted into the National Hockey League. I had been projected to be drafted in the first round, but it would have to be hard, with North American players such as Steven Stamkos and Luke Schenn in there and European superstars such as Nikita Filatov and Ivan Shertok to boot. The Tampa Bay Lightning have the best chance of taking the 1st overall pick after coming in last place last year.
I had decided to walk around town before heading back home to head to the draft. I had decided to meet my buddy Nick Barry over at the mall. As I walking past stores, I saw a group of people crowding 1 person. As I walked up to the group, my curious face turned into a grin as I saw Nick gloating about being in the Entry Draft. “Yea, of course I’ll be picked first” said Nick. Then that stupid person that’s always in the crowd yells out “Isn’t Jason Skyland going to be picked first overall?” Nick then burst out of the crowd in a rage, yelling that I’ve got nothing on in. He then ran straight into me, knocking him down, but I only stumbled around.
“Hey, what’s your prob-, oh, sorry about that Jason” Nick said as he started to get up from the ground. “So what do you want to do?” I asked. “Maybe hang out at Vanessa’s house, her parents are on a trip to the Bahamas and I’ve been the only one really visiting her, she’d love to see you again” Nick responded. Vanessa was Nick’s girlfriend for 3 years. They both had the same personality, cocky on the outside if you don’t know them, but if you do, he’s one of the nicest guys you can know. Nick had come down from Buffalo, New York, his hometown, after the season ended. Luckily we were both on the same team mid-way through the season, when I was traded to the Oshawa Generals. As we arrived at Vanessa’s house, she seemed to be in a pretty down mood. We both asked what was wrong, she only responded as to saying that she’d miss us when we were drafted. We tried to spend as much time as we could with her. It was lucky enough that she was going to attend the draft. My parents, Nick, Vanessa and my girlfriend Jessica, we had been together for a good 5 years. So we had decided to carpool in my father’s pickup truck. We sat down in our seats and waited to see who would pick first. I clenched my fist when I looked over to Ivan Shertok. I always knew that guy was such a jerk. As I had my girlfriend on my right, my mother on my left, my best friend behind me and my father in front of me along with my grandparents, I’m fully prepared to see what happens.

Re: *Legend In The Making* A Jason Skyland Be A Pro

Since the draft had yet to begin, Nick and I went over to check out some of the other prospects. We were able to see Drew Doughty and Zach Bogosian. Both of them were high up in the NHL scouting ranking as Doughty was ranked third and Bogosian fourth. Jessica and Vanessa came over to see Steven Stamkos when they noticed Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin were with their respective teams to announce who they were going to draft. I swear they would have fainted if we hadn’t rushed them away from Sid the Kid and Alexander the Great. Nick, Vanessa, Jessica and I had decided to go check out Scotiabank Place and also to buy some popcorn as we were starting to get hungry. We left the popcorn with the girls when we heard that the draft was about to begin. Eventually all four of us rushed back to our seats to attend the Draft. Gary Bettman, the league commissioner, walked onto the stage to announce who had the first overall pick. “Hello fans of Ottawa and players to be drafted, if you did not know, I am Gary Bettman, the league commissioner and I am here to announce the possessor of the 1st overall pick” he announced into the microphone as it echoed through the arena. “The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded their 3rd, 4th and 5th draft pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for the 1st overall pick” Bettman announced. Mario Lemieux, the owner of the Penguins stood up and waved to the crowd, causing a number of cheers. It seemed my heart was doing back flips, my all time favorite team had the first overall draft pick in the draft I’m in.
Nick probably had noticed that I was hoping so hard to be drafted first overall, I mean who wouldn’t want to get to play with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. Nick patted me on the shoulder as Ray Shero, the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, went to go use the first overall pick. “Thank you Mr. Bettman, we do possess the 1st Overall Pick and we pick Jason Skyland of the Oshawa Generals of the OHL!” Shero said, pointing me out from the crowd. I leaped out of my seat in joy, hugging my mother and father and kissing my girlfriend. Nick gave me a high five as I walked down the aisle to Ray Shero and Mario Lemieux. They handed me my draft hat, and then finally, my jersey. On the back it read “Skyland and 08, the year of the draft”. I walked back to my seat, my stomach churning from the inside out of the thrill of being drafted to such a team.
Later in the draft, the 7th pick in the NHL draft went to the Los Angeles Kings, selecting Nick. Nick practically ran down to the Kings organization to receive his draft jersey and his draft ring. Of course, Ivan Shertok was drafted by the New Jersey Devils and after the draft had started bragging about knowing where he is going to be drafted to. Jeff Shannon, who had gone to high school with me, he had been going to the Vancouver Canucks. After the draft, my new friend Jeff, Nick and Jessica plus being followed closely by Vanessa decided to head out to a restaurant to celebrate. Soon enough, I hope I would be getting the call of a contract negotiation.

I was starting to get a bit worried, it’s been a whole week, and still no call from the Penguins about my future. I had been sitting on my porch when I got the call. There I was sipping lemonade with Jessica, still a little bit down with the no-show from the Penguins. I was starting to guess they didn’t want me anymore, after the recent signing of the Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedetenko, my possible start of the season with the Penguins were looking grim as they were both wingers. Then, my cell phone started to vibrate along the table. I quickly picked it up and checked out the caller id: it read “Ray Shero”. I quickly started gasping for air, still not believing he finally called. In the midst of my breathing, I almost forgot to answer. I flipped open my phone and quickly said “hello”. “Yes, hello Jason, it is me Ray Shero and I have some rather unpleasant news for you” he responded. My facial expression quickly turned from relived to worried and Jessica clearly saw I had fear in my eyes. She mouthed the words “What’s wrong” but I turned away. “I’m extremely sorry, but in a act of accepting cap space, we’ve traded you to the Toronto Maple Leafs for draft pick, I have no time to talk anymore, I must go, goodbye” he said as the line went blank. A tear quickly developed into my eye. Jessica quickly ran over to my side and started rubbing my back to help soothe the pain. Nothing was working, so I walked into the house, not saying a word. Later that night, as I was packing my bags, Nick and Jessica walked into my room. “I still can’t believe this happened, I was just so pumped up to play for the Penguins and for them to let me down like this...” I said, still paying attention to loading in my sweater into my suit case. “At least you didn’t get sent over to Philadelphia, that’d kill you badly” Nick responded as he sat down on the edge of my bed. “Well, I’m leaving for Detroit tomorrow morning, so I guess we’ll play NHL 09 for the night Nick, Jessica?” I responded, turning on my Xbox 360. “Why are you heading to Detroit, I thought you were on the Leafs” Jessica said, turning on her controller. “We play in Detroit against the Red Wings for our first game” I responded while looking at the television. I still couldn’t believe I got traded, but I’ll promise myself, I’ll make the Penguins pay for sure.

              INTENSE PLOT TWIST!

Obviously there are too many superstars on the Penguins with Crosby and Malkin, and if Skyland was on it too, the Penguins would explode. Anyways, good luck in Toronto.

I arrived him Toronto extremely early in the morning. Jessica and I had decided to stick together since we both graduated; we had decided to live together. Nick said he will come down soon after he got his contract worked out with the Kings. Jeff has been busy lately with training with Alexander Ovechkin and Sergei Fedorov to improve his speed. He’s always been a fast skater, but only in junior, the NHL is a whole new level. I really shouldn’t be talking, I’ve only learned what I can during the off-season and from watching countless of games on the TV. I walked into the Joe Louis Arena, expecting Jessica and I being the only two there, but when I saw the ice, I saw the figure skating on the ice with blue suspenders on. He must be a Maple Leaf. I shook my head and walked into the dressing room. I looked around the dressing room, really only noticing the Red Wings logo on the floor and the giant “Away” sign. As I looked around, I saw the name tablet named “King” with a bunch of equipment lying around. He must have been the guy skating on the ice. Then I saw a name tablet that read “Skyland” with a jersey hanging over it. My mouth practically dropped when I saw the number 79 on it. I never would ever wear that number. I was always either 96 or 9. I could see 9 out of the picture because of Dominic Moore, who wears the number 9. But whatever happened to 96. As I sat next to Jessica while pulling on my skates, Nikolai Antropov and Tomas Kaberle walked inside and noticed me. We didn’t really saw anything except saying “Hi”. Soon enough, the dressing room was full and game time was nearing. I pulled over my head my Maple Leafs jersey, stood up and headed to the rink to play my very first NHL game. It was the beginning of the rest of my life!

                  Just a comment, no team would ever trade there 1st overall draft pick for a 2nd, a 3rd, a 4th and a 5th, ever.

Toronto Maple Leafs face off against the defending champs, the Detroit Red Wings!

                      First Period

I thought as though I got off onto a great start to my career. I was able to take the puck and get behind a great defensemen like Nicklas Lidstrom only to end up getting robbed by Chris Osgood. Vesa Toskala was having a great period, shutting down capable players like Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. Nearing the end of the period, I felt as though the game was getting harder and more frustrating. As the siren rang and the period ended, both goalies proved to be quite solid with a 0-0 tie.

                      2nd Period

This period seemed to only get harder. Henrik Zetterberg started off the scoring, teeing one up off a quick one-timer. I didn't know what to do as I wasn't much of a two way player. During my junior hockey days, I never really had to as I was on a very defense capable team. Yet it seemed everything was different with the Leafs, ecspicially against the red hot offensive team like the Detroit Red Wings. I would start to get in penalty trouble because as soon as the end of the period came, I had been in the box 3 seperate times and the Red Wings had took a commanding 3-0 lead off goals from Tomas Holmstrom and dangle master Pavel Datsyuk. Many fans of the Red Wings knew what was happening, a classical Leafs game where the other team killed. They were sure in for a surprise in the 3rd.

                      3rd Period

I had knew most of these goals had to be my fault. Many of them not being rookie mistakes but plain old screw-ups by yours truly. I needed to get my team back into the game quickly, there wasn't a second to spare. I took the game upon my shoulder's, scoring my first career goal, going top shelf on the Red Wings. We were closing in on the Red Wings. I got 1 more goal, looking somewhat like my first. We were down one with not much time left in the game. Time was running out in the game as I scored my third goal. My first career hat trick in my first career game, I'd say it's a pretty good start. The game went into OT, as the Leafs had begun their crazy comeback.

                      Overtime

Since Overtime only allows four players on each side, I was moved to play center. Matt Stajan and I played most of the Overtime paired against Marian Hossa and Pavel Datsyuk. Neither of us could score in the dead quiet Joe Louis Arena. Jessica was going crazy out of the quite quiet crowd. I was guessing they couldn't believe the major comeback the Toronto Maple Leafs had made. Now it was onto the shootout.

                      Shootout

The Red Wings had some of the top shooters in the world with Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Marian Hossa, who had played last year with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Atlanta Thrashers. Vesa had to be on top of his game if he had a chance of stopping those three and winning us the game. Mikhail Grabovski couldn't score as it looked like he was trying to stick the puck through the five-hole of Osgood, but Osgood closed it up. Marian Hossa was unable to score, losing the puck while deking to his left. I went up second, deked and roofed it uptop for the 1st goal of the shootout. They used Pavel Datsyuk, but he was robbed by Toskala's glove. Jiri Tlustly had his chance as he ended the game, poking the puck through a hole between Osgood's elbow and ribs. We won the game 4-3 in the shootout, and I was looking good in the beginning of the year. I was awarded the 1st Star of the game.

Well yea, but this guy always has to be the #1 overall pick. He can't play it off that he was a late pick. I think bhurst's pre-draft story is the best on here so far.
