I was awoken abruptly by my phone alarm ringing, to the tune of "Lithium" by Nirvana, my favorite song and favorite band of all time. I wiped the sleep from my eyes, and watched as my scouting report flashed across the TV screen, on TSN Sportscentre. It was the morning of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. As I climbed out of bed, and grabbed my shirt from the floor of the hotel room, it finally hit me. My parents had sacrificed so much, and I had worked so hard, and finally it was almost time for me to live the dream of every young hockey player. I was in Ottawa, with my family and friends, chasing my lifelong dream, of becoming an NHL player. I woke my roomate, Jason Skyland up by throwing a couch cushion onto his bed. Jason and I were teamates, linemates, and best friends, ever since we began playing together on the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, nearly two years ago. "Damn man, it's almost time. I can't freakin' believe it, we're about to be drafted into the NHL.", I said, as I started getting ready. I couldn't eat, I was so excited, and nervous.
"I know, it's crazy. We've gotten this far in our careers, it's almost surreal to think we can actually get drafted", said Jason as he brushed his teeth. As I thought to myself, there was a knock on our door. It was both of our parents, they were all ready to head down to Scotia Bank Place, for the start of the draft. I checked my phone, and read the text from one of my mentors, Pat Kaleta, another Buffalo kid and player for the team I worshipped all through my childhood and hoped to get drafted by, the Buffalo Sabres.
"Hey, just wanted to wish you luck kid. You've worked so damn hard, and I can't wait to see who you get drafted by. I look forward to kicking your *** around a real NHL rink in the near future, LOL. - PK" was the message. I laughed and showed Jason, as we greeted our parents, and walked to the elevator. Not much was said in the elevator, as the tension and excitement kept us silent. No one knew what to say. The elevator dinged, and our little group walked through the lobby, and out into the world, heading towards our future.

The draft started off, with dynamic scorer Steven Stamkos going to the Tampa Bay Lightning. After what seemed like forever, I got a kick from Jason, and snapped out of my daze. "The Penguins are up next man, I want to see who they pick." said Jason, nearly having a fit of excitement. We both watched as Ray Shero, and Michel Therrien, GM and Head Coach of the Penguins respectivley, made their way to the podium. "The Pittsburgh Penguins are very happy to select, from the London Knights of the OHL, right-wing.. Jason Skyland!" said Shero. I thought to myself, "HOLY S**T!, Jason just got drafted!" and my thoughts mimicked Jason's expression, as his jaw nearly dropped to the floor, as he was bombarded with hugs and pats on the back. I gave him a little shove, and he stood up, and nearly sprinted down to the podium, and recieved his jersey, with #96 already stitched on it. I watched as Jason was escorted away to do a bunch of interviews. He has been touted as the "Next One" for years, putting up insane amounts of points. As I watched a few more teams pick, Buffalo drafted a giant defenseman, 6'7" Tyler Myers. I felt a mix of happiness and jealousy. I was in a daze again, when I heard Commisioner Gary Bettman on the PA. "Excuse me, we have a trade to announce. The Buffalo Sabres have traded their 2nd Round pick in 2008, and the rights to goaltender Nick Eno, in exchange for Detroit's 1st Round pick, 30th overall in this year's draft. Buffalo, you're now on the clock." I thought that was a bit weird, and I looked at my dad, who gave me a slight grin. My heart started pounding, and I started praying. GM Darcy Regier, Coach Lindy Ruff, Assistant Coach James Patrick, and former Sabres enforcer Rob Ray, stepped up to the podium. I started sweating and shaking slightly. "With our 2nd pick of the 1st round, we are so very proud to draft, from the OHL's London Knights, left-wing Nick Barry!" At that moment, it felt like a tidal wave hit me, as I was bombarded by my family and friends. "Congrats kid, You just got drafted by the freaking SABRES! I knew you could so it, I'm so ******* proud of you!" said my dad, who gave me a bear hug. I hugged my mom, high-fived everyone and anyone, and walked down to the podium. Everything was a blur, I couldn't even think. I shook Regier's hand, and was greeted by Coach Ruff, James Patrick, and one of my heros grwoing up, Rob Ray. "Congrats kid, welcome to the Sabres" said Regier, as he handed me my jersey, with my number, 81 and name stitched on. I slipped my new blue&gold jersey on, as I had my first photo taken with it on. It sure felt incredible to be wearing an official Sabres jersey with my name and number on it.

We walked back to the Sabres table, and I was greeted by someone unexpected. Another player I idolized, Thomas Vanek. "Congrats, Nick. I look forward to seeing you in the blue and gold, and maybe on my other wing someday." said Vanek, as I shook hands with him. I was interviewed by TSN, CBC, Sportsnet, ESPN, NHL Network, and several newspapers, before Darcy Regier gave me his number, and said, "Congrats once again kid, we'll be in touch. Keep out of trouble, and start getting ready for training camp. Good luck.", and with that, Jason, both of our families, and I departed the arena, and went to celebrate. I was still in disbelief. I have the opportunity to play for my hometown and favorite team, under the bright lights of the NHL. I had never expected to be drafted in the 1st Round, so it was a total shock to me. I checked my phone, and had 77 unread texts, and 35 missed calls. I started looking through them, and replied to all, thanking everyone who had congratulated me. Old teammates, friends, other family members, my billet family, and a few of my old coaches had all texted or called. We all walked into a restaurant, and I just let it all soak in. I was going to be a professional hockey player...

After training camp and the preseason had finished, Darcy Regier called me into his office at HSBC Arena. "Thanks for coming Nick, I needed to have a chat with you." said Mr. Regier. "You've had a solid camp, and excellent preseason and have proven that you are a very talented prospect, and you give us a very bright future. We believe that it will be better for your development, if you start the season with the Pirates, in the AHL. Starting with the Pirates will be a very beneficial aspect to your development. Show us what you can do with the Pirates, and with some hard work and determination, you'll soon be a key member of the Sabres. We're very lucky to have a powerforward like you in the pipeline of our franchise. It is tough decision for me to send you down, but it will only help you in the long run to adjust to the pro lifestyle." said Mr. Regier. "Alright sir, I will try my damndest to improve my game, and to make the organization proud." I said, optimistically, yet somewhat dismayed. "Coach Dineen will be in contact with you shortly. Any questions? No? Well, good luck kid." And with that, I walked out of the arena. As i walked to my car, I felt my phone vibrate. A text message.

"Hello, Nick. This is Kevin Dineen, your new head coach. Mr. Regier has informed me that you've been sent down to the Pirates. We've worked out some expectations that we would like you to aim for this season..

    - Score at least 28 goals

    - Have at least 140 hits

    - Record at least 68 points

    - Take at least 175 shots

I know those seem a little steep for your 1st season, but with your skill set, it should be no problem, once you adjust to the pace of the game at a higher level. I've decided to start you out on the checking line, but don't get too comfortable there. The better you play, the more ice time you'll get, and the more you'll move up the depth chart. You'll also be playing the point on the 1st power-play unit, and on the 2nd penalty-kill line. Our first game is coming up soon, against the Manchester Monarchs. Get ready kid, I expect you in Portland for practice by Thursday. Check out the pro-shop in town once you get here, and pick up some new equipment if you want, it's free. - Coach Dineen" I headed home, and packed my bags for Portland.
    ---------------------------------------------

I arrived in Portland, and was greeted by defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani, whom I'd be sharing an apartment with. "There he is, Mr. Big-Shot Prospect. Welcome to Portland" said Gragnani, through a grin as he greeted me. He helped me with one of my suitcases, as we hopped into his car. We joked around a bit, and got to know each other. The new apartment was pretty big. I put my stuff in my new room, Marc-Andre pulled some chips out, and turned on the Xbox 360. "Think you can beat me?" he said. "Hell yeah I can beat you. I got dibs on Buffalo" I said, as he handed me a controller, and popped in NHL '09. Well, he ended up beating me 5-4 in OT, as the Edmonton Oilers. "Loser buys the pizza" said Marc, laughing. "Ah, I see." He gave me a menu, told me what to order, and then we both left to go get it. Before we got to the local pizzeria, he stopped at the pro-shop, and I picked out some new equipment. An Easton Synergy Elite stick, NikeBauer Vapor XXXX Skates, NikeBauer Vapor XXXX gloves, and a RBK 8K helmet, with a clear, curved visor. I grabbed a few rolls of hockey tape too, and picked up a NikeBauer Vapor XXXX stick, as a backup. "Nice stuff, maybe I'll pick out some new stuff later. Anyways, Mancari, Gerbe, and Enroth are coming over in a bit, they want to meet you." said Marc. "Cool, what time?" "About 15 minutes from now, let's get that pizza, I'm starving" said Marc. With that, we got the pizza(which I paid for), and returned to the apartment. We all partied, probably more than we should've, and didn't stop until almost 3am. We had practice at 8:15 in the morning....

Awesome. Love the little details. I don't have time for stuff like that during the weekend, which is when I'm allowed to play video games, but I'll be sure to try and do some of that off-ice stuff.

Anyways, enough of my thread-hijacking. Awesome job, and keep up the great work. It's a great read.

Thank you so much NY, I really appreciate you checking this out. I'm trying to make the storyline/write-ups as detailed as possible. I might be a sportswriter someday(lol), so I'm trying to work on my writing skills/technique. You keep up the excellent work on your BAP too, I'm really enjoying yours, as is.

If you're seriously interested in being a sportswriter, I might show some of these to my dad. He used to cover the Rangers for a NY newspaper. He could probably give some good constructive criticism.

            PRACTICE

Partying into the wee hours of the morning with my new teammates was NOT a good decision. We payed dearly at practice that morning. Coach Dineen could tell immediately, and promptly separated the group of us from the rest of the team, and ripped us all new a**holes. I felt ashamed, but as soon as I did, I forgot, as we had to skate laps and do 45 push ups for every two laps. After about a half hour, Coach finally let us have some water, started going over strategies, and determining line combos. Coach put me on the 3rd line, with rookie playmaker Felix Schutz at center, and veteran grinder Tyler Bouck at right-wing. As we got accostumed to one another, and work on power-play and penaty-kill drills, I took a slapshot right in the crotch from captain Mark Mancari, who holds the AHL record for hardest slapshot. I stumbled off to the bench, silently screaming "F**K!!! F**K!!!", in obvious pain. I took a minute to gather myself near the bench, and returned to practicing. We started to scrimmage, and I got a quick goal off of a sick pass from Marc-Andre, and set up Tyler Bouck for the game-winner, final score being 3-2. "Alright there, Barry?" said Mancari as we skated off. "I'd better be", I said jokingly. "You killed all of my future kids, man that hurt like a ****" I said, trying to keep a serious face, but laughing along with Mancari, Enroth, and Marc-Andre.

            --------------------------------------------

            PREGAME

My nerves didn't hit me until we started suiting up for the game, against Manchester at home. "All right, I want you guys to play your best. I want an up-tempo, physical, and smart game played. Your a good bunch of players. Go out there and play your game. Let's start this season off on the right foot, with a win. Good luck boys, keep your heads up, and play smart. No dumb penalties. Minizmize turnovers." said Coach Dineen, optimistically. I tied my skates up, finished taping my new Synergy Elite with black tape, and adjusted my new NikeBauer 8500 Helmet. We were all quiet, and then coach said"It's time boys. Let's get us a solid win!", and with that, we got ready to head out onto the ice. I stood up, put my gloves on, tucked my jersey in on the right side, grabbed my stick and followed Mike Card and goalie Jhonas Enroth into the tunnel. My heart started pounding, as we all yelled "PIRATES!" on three, at the command of captain Mark Mancari. "This is it, the 1st step into my future, my 1st professional hockey game.." but my thoughts were cut short, as "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns 'N Roses started blarring. We could now hear the crowd, roaring with excitement, eager to see the Buffalo Sabres prospects in action for the 1st time. The crowd grew louder and louder, as we stepped out onto the ice, and skated around a bit, trying to get focused. Tyler Bouck, right-winger on my line skated up and tapped me on the shinpads with his stick. "Good luck kid, I got your back", he said, with a smile. "Thanks Boucky, I got yours too", I said. The ref then signaled for us to get ready. As I skated up to the faceoff circle, and lined up against Manchester winger Teddy Purcell, I showed a bit of my aggressive side, and gave him a little shove. He looked at me, and gave me a bit of a slash. "Knock it off!" yelled the ref. I gave Purcell a little crosscheck, and menacing glare, and said "You wanna go?" jokingly, as the puck was finally dropped....

That'd be cool man. That's if my hockey career, or music(guitar/band) career doesn't work out, lol. If your dad doesn't mind, than that'd be cool. Thanks.

Whoah, you play real hockey too? That's awesome. Yeah, I'm on the ice about 8 times a week, so I get my fill of hockey even outside of 09. Anyways, great job, you really draw out the pregame stuff, I'm dying on the inside, waiting to see how you handle the on-ice stuff.

Yep, I do. I play Midget Minor here in Buffalo. Same here too, I'm on the ice a ton. We have the Winter Classic rink from '08 right in town(outskirts of Buffalo), and I have a decent sized rink in my backyard. Thanks man, I'll have the first game up in a bit tonight. I'm glad you're liking this. Firefox froze when I was posting the original form of that pregame update, and I lost my full update, so that's only about half of what it would've been.

Felix Schutz won the opening faceoff. We moved the puck up the ice, I went to the front of the net, and deflected a slapshot from Tyler Bouck off of the crossbar. Mike Card kept the puck in, passed it to me, I took a slapshot, and hit Monarchs goalie Jonathan Bernier right in the mask. "Keep the puck in!" yelled Coach. Kevin Westgarth tried to bring the puck out of the Monarchs zone, but I caught him with his head down and destroyed him along the boards. Schutz called for a pass. "Pass, out in front" he yelled. This was where I made my first mistake. I passed it, but not to Felix. I passed it right to Teddy Purcell in the slot, who immediatley charged down the ice . "What are you thinking Barry? Change, NOW!" yelled Coach. Just as I climbed over the boards, Marc-Andre Cliche wired a wrister over Jhonas Enroth's shoulder, putting us down 1-0. "F**K!" I thought to myself. "Keep your head up, and watch the turnovers" Coach said to me. I skated a few more shifts in the 1st, and hit the crossbar twice. I had a few more hits. The rest of the period was mostly back-and-forth action, with no great scoring chances. I didn't play in the last 8 minutes of the 1st, as I had another bad turnover.
Heading into the second, I wanted to be smarter with the puck. Me and Boucky combined for a huge hit on Matt Mouslon in the Monarchs zone, the puck went back to Marc-Andre Gragnani, who kept it in. I called for the pass near the blueline, drove towards the right half-wall, going right around Alec Martinez. Joe Piskula tried to poke check, but as I raeched the goaline, I stopped quickly, pivoted back on my right skate, and flipped a saucer pass over a sprawled Martinez, which found Felix right in front of the net. He blasted the one-timer in from the top of the crease. "YEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!!" was the synonomous roar as we all celebrated in the slot. "Excellent pass man" said Felix, as I patted him on the helmet. "Good shot" I said. We returned to the bench, and coach complimented me on my assist, and first career point. We had the game tied at 1-1. "Can't believe I got my first point this quick, this is going to be easy" I thought to myself. The 2nd period ended, just as I took a stupid cross-checking penalty to the side of our net. Vladmir Dravecky deflected a shot off of the post, just as I came flying into the crease, a bit late. I hit him with a nasty cross-check, right in front of the net. The penalty turned out to be costly, as Richard Clune scored on the ensuing powerplay. Our line kept generating chances in the 3rd, but nothing was going in. With a minute left in the third, Nathan Gerbe scored the game-tying goal, making it 2-2. We all celebrated, and high-fived Gerbe. "Nice one man" I said to him, as he hopped on the bench.
We headed into the OT. Coach put me and Felix out there. We kept the Monarchs pinned in their end for almost the whole 5 minutes. Nobody on either team got a good scoring chance. I made a big shot-block on Purcell, as Jhonas flopped in net, anticipating the cross-crease one-timer. We headed to a shootout. Gerbe shot first, but got robbed glove side by Bernier. Jhonas stacked the pads to deny Purcell's Datsyukian deke. Coach told me I was up to shoot second. "Alright, I think I'll fake a slapper, and take it back-hand forehand" were my thoughts, as I skated to center. The ref blew the whistle, I picked up the puck, and skated in on Bernier, at about half-speed. I faked the slapper, which got Bernier to drop down into the butterfly. As I went to go backhand-
forehand , I looked down at the puck for a second, and BOOM. Bernier pokechecked me, just as I brought the puck to the backhand. "Dammit. Dammit. Dammit" I thought, as I slammed my stick into the boards in the corner, and skated back to the bench. Nobody scored until round 10, when the Monarchs Paul Crotsy beat Enroth with a slapshot. Mike Card then kept it alive, Enroth stoned Piskula, and Mike Funk dangled the hell out of Bernier, and ripped a nasty wrister topshelf, to win it in round 11. We went crazy, jumped off of the bench and dogpiled Funk in the corner. I couldn't belive we won, and that I got an assist in my 1st ever game. In the lockerroom, I looked at the scoresheet. I managed 13 hits, and played 18:49. Not bad for my 1st game. I was beat, and slept like a baby once I got back to the apartment.
