"Good-Bye Boys"

6-3. The final score of my final game with the Mississauga Majors of the Ontario Hockey League. We were knocked out of the OHL playoffs by the Niagara Ice Dogs in four games. We walked back to the dressing room. I pulled off my mask and shook my head like a dog. Wiped my nose with my fingers and wiped it on my pads. 15 minutes had gone by and I was still sitting there, staring and realizing this is it. Im 19 years of age, and done my 4 year in the OHL. I compare it to a high school graduate. You must work your *** off, until you realize your only 30% complete what you must do. I am going to Ottawa to be drafted into the NHL. Wow.

Draft Day

I have watched this event on TV every year since I passioned hockey. It was the most surreal moment of my life. I feel like a celebrity. I remember flicking on TSN early that morning and watching Bob McKenzie give his thoughts on myself. "He is a good butterfly style goaltender, very talented down low, and a quick one to recover. I expect him to be a late 3rd rounder."
When it was nearing the end of the second round, I got that feeling of high anxiety. Thoughts, like,"What if I don't get drafted?" Waiting I did, listening, I did, hoping I did, praying I did. It was the beginning of the fourth round. Doug Risebrough of the Minnesota Wild told Gary Betman his selection.
"With the 115th overall pick, The Minnesota Wild are glad to choose from the Mississauga Majors, Goaltender, Dylan Spero."
My mom cried, my dad smiled, my sister changed songs on her iPod. I smiled and walked down the aile, adjusting my tie, I put the hat on, along with the jersey and said,"Cheese" I had done it, I was in the NHL.
