    Carolina Hurricanes (NHL09, Finally)

Raleigh, NC (AP) - In a surprise move today the Carolina Hurricanes fired GM Jim Rutherford. Coming into his place will be former NHL great Ray Bourque. Rutherford, who led the hurricanes to a Stanley Cup victory in 2006 was a bit stunned to say the least. He stated that he's a part owner of the team and that the team didn't play no matter how strong he felt and knew they were.

Joe Corvo is the hero to open 08-09

Raleigh, NC - Talk about an exciting way to open your season. Florida and Carolina needed extra time after both goalies kept the puck out of the net through regulation. Florida managed to throw 17 towards Cam Ward, most of which he easily turned away while being tested a few times. Carolina managed to force Thomas Vokoun to make 28 saves. 28 seconds into overtime is all it took for the 'Canes to win there season opener. Joe Corvo ripped one from the blue line beating Vokoun high glove.

          Stats:

          FLA/CAR Shots: 17/29
          FLA/CAR Faceoffs: 4/21
          FLA/CAR TOA: 5:21/7:37
          Powerplay: FLA 0/2 CAR 0/5

            Offense shows up in Tampa

The Canes offense scored in regulation and Cam Ward was scored on. It surely was a different game. The Hurricanes managed to strike the Lighting for 4 goals, while allowing only one themselves. But if you look closer, offense wasn't there. 9 shots through 60 minutes.

            Scoring Summary:

            1st: CAR - E. Staal (J. Williams, J.Melichar) 8:38 1-0 CAR
            2nd: TBL - J. Halpern (E.Artyukhin, J.Jokinen) 15:32 1-1 TIE
            J. Williams (T***utu, J. Pitkanen) 19:41 2-1 CAR
            3rd: E. Staal (R. Whitney, J. Pitkanen) 2:02 3-1 CAR
            B.Sutter EN (W. Brookbank, J. Pitkanen) 19:58 4-1 CAR

            Stats:

            CAR/TBL Shots: 9/17
            CAR/TBL Faceoffs: 13/6
            CAR/TBL TOA: 6:45/8:10
            Powerplay: CAR 0/0 TBL 0/0
