Re: Success is a matter of hanging on after others have let go…My journey to the NHL

Word from the big team is that Atlanta has signed Martin Lapointe and Martin Gelinas

We all head out after the game to celebrate our first win together. I still don’t really know a whole lot of guys on this team, we’ve spent a lot of time together, but mostly practicing and drills. Matt Siddall, who plays on my line, is probably the closest I have to a friend here so far. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec is pretty cool too, but it’s usually Matt that I spend the most time with.

Matt: “You did alright tonight man”

Me: “Yeah, it was great to score that goal. Seemed like a lot of weight lifted from my shoulders. I can’t believe I got called on that penalty that cost us the game, coach looked upset.”

Matt: “He always does. It was just your first game. After what you have been through you should be proud. Just wait until both of us get to

Me: “LOL, Yeah, we’re a package deal, Atlanta needs to call us up, get some decent players for a change!”

    Matt: “Soon man, soon.”

We enter the bar and we all find a table together. I head up to the bar with Matt to get the first round of beers. Getting closer to the bar now, some obnoxious guy seems to be making an arse of himself. I get to the bar, he’s back on to me, but there is something strangely familiar about him, I can’t place it. He picks up his drink, leans back his head and starts chugging it. Suddenly he loses his balance and comes back crashing into me. He turns around and the air comes out of my lungs.

    Brian Motzinger.

Brian: “Well, well, lhook who whe haf here”

Me: “Brian, what are you doing in Houston?”

Brian: “I lif here nhow. Whorking fhur an inshurance comp’ny. Wha tha hell you doin’ here?”

    Me: “Playing hockey”

Brian: “Rheally? Wow, nhot me. Nobody’ll ghive meh a shot now. Thanks to yhou…”

Me: “Me? Your drunk *** hit us, remember? Probably not, you were too drunk from what I here…I see not much has changed.”

The situation escalates as Brian gets in my face, the stink of alcohol is everywhere.

Brian: “It’s auhl yur fhault mhan, I was jus drivin’ minded mhy own biznessh, then suddly you were right in fhront of meh”

Suddenly Brian’s fist was slamming into my face.

As I was hitting the floor, all I could think was how quick he was for someone so drunk.

I got up looking to get a shot in before the bouncers got to us, when I saw Motzinger on the floor himself, with Matt standing over him, begging him to get up again.

Then we were escorted out of the bar.

    Me: “Hey Matt…”

Matt: “Sorry man, I know who that was, when he hit you I just reacted.”

    Me: “No problem man, thanks.”

Pain. Still with the pain. I thought it was supposed to get better. When? The pills help, but not nearly for long enough, and they’re nearly gone now. Dr. Reid said this was a one month supply, but it’s only been two weeks. Time to phone his office and get some more. His receptionist, an old hag named Lucy answers the phone and immediately cops an attitude when she hears my voice. I tell her I need Dr. Reid to give me a new prescription, she says she’ll tell me the same thing she told me two hours ago, and yesterday, and the day before that and the day before that…there is no other prescription. What is she talking about? I didn’t call two hours ago, or yesterday, or at all. Did I? Suddenly Dr. Reid is on the phone, telling me that he gave me a one month prescription because that is all I needed. If I’m almost gone through the pills then I am taking too many and I need help. Come in and see him or go to the hospital, but I won’t get any more pills at his office or anywhere else. I’m developing a problem he says. Idiot doctor.

Thanks. Glad you like it. I was wondering if there is too much story in it? Game updates should be more frequent in this soon, my backstory is almost complete...

I do actually have some plans in mind for future stories, but the main focus will be my games.

thats to bad I'm happier with 10 backstories and 1 game and repeating that but whatever floats your boat.

Time for our second game. We’re in San Antonio to play the Rampage. They seem to have a pretty good offensive team. Early in the first period Stevenson gives me a pass and I skate in front of the net and let a shot go…CLINK…off the goal post! So close. I get a little extra charge in me from the close call, but the puck is soon on it’s way down towards our end.

After two periods we are down 2-1. I’m -1 on the game so far. Coach Granato pulls Pavelec for an extra attacker…me. We’re out there buzzing around the Rampage goalie, but can’t get the puck in. The Rampage get the puck out and into our empty cage. Now I’m -2. We lose the game 3-1.

Ding-dong. Ding-dong. Ding-dong. I pick up the phone. “Hello?” Ding-dong. Nobody there. My head is pounding…wait, no, that’s the door. I get out of bed and make my way to see who is knocking on my door so early…I open the door to see my sister Denise standing there.

Me: “Denise. You better have a good reason for knocking on my door so early in the morning.”

Denise: “Larry, it’s 3:00 in the afternoon.”

Me: “What? I’m late for work.”

                        Denise: “Don’t bother…”

Me: “Look Denise, I have to go, those shelves aren’t going to stock themselves. Gimme a ride to Walmart will ya?”

Denise: “Larry, you were fired last week, remember? Of course you don’t. You need help Larry…”

                        Me: “Oh here we go…”

Denise: “Listen to me. You need help.”

Me: “Yes I do, but nobody seems to willing to give them to me.”

Denise: “The pills aren’t the help you need, they’re the problem.”

Me: “No, Denise, they aren’t, people like you are.”

She says something unintelligible as I slam the door in her face. She’s been constantly at me for the last month. Especially after I found some pills in her medicine cabinet, and helped myself to them. It was no big deal, just needed them to dull the pain, pain that I’m not sure is there anymore.

A hamburger. That’s all I want. Yet this pimply faced dork in front of me refuses to give me one. What’s his problem? The manager is looking at me, he looks upset. He’s on the phone, all the while looking at me. I turn my attention back to the pimply nerd…

Me: “This is Burger King right? BURGER King?"

                          Pimply: “Yeah”

Me: “SO GIVE ME A @%$&! BURGER!”

I don’t feel so well. Must be the hunger. My leg is killing me again. Stupid park bench, not very comfortable. Somethings wrong. My vision goes black. There’s a hand on my shoulder. My hamburger? Vision’s back. Police? What the hell? Darkness, nothing but darkness.

My vision is coming back. Did I fall asleep waiting on the hamburger that wasn’t coming? Police are gone, that’s good. How did I get home in bed? Wait, that’s not right, I don’t have a bed. Don’t have a home. Suddenly, the attractive woman from the party is looking at me again. She mustn’t be able to get me off her mind. Sweet. Wait, wasn’t she a…

I’ve had this game marked on my calendar. The City Flames. My first shot against the organization that cut me, because I wasn’t good enough. Well, here I am. Ready to prove you wrong

Quad City starts out the game in our zone. All over us. We are barely surviving the first minute and a half. We weather the storm and end up taking a 1-0 lead after the first period.

Second period, the puck is in the neutral zone, Flames defenseman Matt Pelech and I are battling for it. The puck moves on towards our end. Pelech is jawing at me about being cut from their team. Says I’m a loser. Suddenly the gloves are off. A couple of solid shots to the head shows Pelech who the real loser is, as he crumples to the ice. My first fight, and I kicked butt. After I serve my five minutes, I get out of the box and Quad City scores to make it 1-1.

It’s the third period and neither team has been able to grab the lead. It’s been a pretty boring period of hockey. The third period ends. Nothing is solved in OT. Time for a shootout.

We send Matt Siddall out there first, but Leland Irving stops him. Pavelec then stops Dan Ryder. It’s my turn. It would be huge if I could score here in the shootout to help beat these guys. I break in on Irving and let my shot go, but it goes off his pads…denied. Tomas Pospisal scores the eventual winner, and we have our first win of the season!
