Coaching Legacy of Kevin Rogers (CH- 2K9)

This is the Coaching Legacy of Kevin Rogers.

This does not mean that my Show franchise is done. I am just taking a break.

Waco, Tx- Big news out of Baylor University today, as Baylor Bears hired new coach Kevin Rogers. This is a pretty bold decision for the Bears, giving a new coach whom has no experience a new job like this.

"We are aware that their are doubters out there, but we believe that this will benefit both the university and the athletes." said the Athletic Director of Baylor.

It is not normal for such a young coach to take over in a big conference without a good resume, so he will instantly be on the hot seat.

"I am excited, for this program, for these young men, for this university. We have some big players here, and Baylor will be a team to reckon with." said Coach Rogers confidently in his first press conference.

The Bears survive against the fiesty Tigers of Jackson State. Led by Henry Duget, Baylor managed to pull away late to a 13 point victory. Duget had 21 points and hit 4 of 6 from downtown. Kevin Rogers and Curtis Jerrells also contributed to the production which gave the Bears momentum throughout the late stages of the second half.

Jackson State was led by their power foward Maxey who put up 18 points for the Tigers.

          Baylor Wins Paradise Jam!!!

          November 16: Baylor 68 Witchita State 54

Three's Rain All Night In Tourney Opener.

Henry Dugat and Curtis Jerrells combine for 8 three pointers as they pull away from the Shockers early. Jerrells is really beginning to step up as a captain of the Baylor team, and this would show to be imprtant later on the in the tourney.

          ---------------------------------------------------------------
          November 17: Baylor 62 Norte Dame 59

Jerrells Hits Buzzer Beater To Move Bears to the Finals.

In a game where to big men battled all night long, it was the senior point who stole the show late.

Baylor forced a missed shot with 2.8 seconds left in the game, and looked to push the ball up court against the pressing Irish defense. "I knew that once Curtis got by the press, he would get a shot off" said Coach Rogers, and that shot was money deep from behind the 3 point line.

"I just wanted to get the ball off before the buzzer sounded, I didn't know if it would go in or not, but once it left the hand, I knew it was money" said a confident Curtis Jerrells after the game.

Kevin Rodgers won player of the game honors, as he put up 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to keep the Fighting Irish off balanced. Kyle McAlarney carried Norte Dame with 21 points, but most came in the 1st half.

          ----------------------------------------------------------------
          November 19: Baylor 79 Illinois-Chicago 36

The Flames stood no match to the Bears.

This game was over by halfway through the first half, as the Bears just jumped out to a hot start and never looked back.

Tweety Carter led the troops with some crazy 3-pt shooting as he had 18 points.

          Baylor Record 4-0

            November 24, 2007: Baylor 57 Centemary 43

Baylor keeps rolling in non-conference play.

While the score may only be a 14 point deficit, this game was over early. Baylor jumped out to a 16 point lead by halftime, and just seemed to coast to an easy victory in Waco.

There was not one player that stuck out in this matchup, as it was a pretty balanced attack. Lacedarius Dunn led the team with 13 points including the breakaway jam late to put the Bears up by 14.

Duget and Jerrells also managed to put up double figures but struggled from the 3-pt line which brings up some questions for the next game.

Centemary was carried by the sophomore small forward, Anthony Gatlin, who scored 18 points, but they were pretty overmatched from the beginning.

One thing that coach Rogers said he would work on in practice this week would be the lack of boxing out on the defensive glass, and also ballhandling.

Baylor will play Washington State on November 30th which should make for a great game.

              Baylor Recruiting News

Baylor Inks 2 during National Signing Week

**** Byron Lloyd PF (Odeesa, TX)
Byron averaged 11.6 points and 9.3 rebounds during the ABL and will be able to fill in nicely with the departure of Senior Kevin Rogers at the end of the season.

He wanted to remain close to home, but really loved the fact that he seemed wanted by the Baylor staff. "They wanted me, and I wanted them. I am just ready to step on that campus next year and get ready for the Big XII competition." said Byron Lloyd.

*** Darrall Laksa SG (Lubbock, TX)
While it came down to Texas Tech and Baylor, the last little push made by Coach Rogers coaching staff seemed to be what enabled the Bears to land Laksa.

The shooting guard from Lubbock signed his letter of intent today and made it official that he wanted to be a Baylor Bear. Laksa averaged 10 points and 4 assists during ABL play but his leadership is what stood out for this coaching staff. "Just watching how this young man carried himself on the court was enough for me, I am excited to have this young man play for me next year." said Coach Rogers.

What's next for recruiting? Well Baylor will still need to look at getting a point guard once Curtis Jerrells leaves, but as of right now, everything seems to be pretty good down the road for Baylor.

                November 30, 2007 Baylor 76 Washington State 48

Hot Second Half to Much For Cougars To Handle.

                WSU 30 18 48
                BU 32 44 76

Going into halftime, this game was very close and a great battle. Every time Baylor seemed to pull away, the Cougars will just claw their way back. Their hot 3 point shooting early kept Washington State in the game.

Well things changed in the second half for Baylor. Their defensive intensity picked up, and so did the play of Kevin Rogers and Henry Dugat. Some big 3's midway during the second half broke the game wide open for Baylor as Dugat caught fire. Then Kevin Rogers just became a force down low. Scoring 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, Rogers was the pick for Player of the Game, and it was an easy choice.

Nikola Koprivica carried the Cougars early, scoring 12 points in the first half, but struggled mightly when Baylor changed up their defensive attack. "The man nailed 3's while we were playing zone, we got out of a zone, and he missed his shots. It is as simple as that." said Coach Rogers during his press conference. While he may seem to be a young coach, slowly but surely, fans are finally beginning to believe in him.

                Baylor Record: 6-0

                  December 3rd, 2007: Baylor 69 Miss. Valley St. 55

Delta Devils Stand No Chance In Waco.

Not much happened here as Baylor just completely destroyed the Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State. The game was only as close as it was because the Devils got points during garbage time against the Baylor scrubs.

Kevin Rogers and Curtis Jerrells both had 14 points to lead the team to this victory.

                  Baylor Record: 7-0

                        December 19th, 2007: Baylor 84 South Carolina 78 F/OT

Baylor Blows 2nd Half Lead But Win in OT.

                        BU 43 22 18 84
                        USC 35 30 13 78

While Baylor did play very well for the most part of the game, they did manage to blow a 14 point second half lead to allow South Carolina to push the game to OT.

"We shot way to many 3s. We have to hold back, get it inside." said Coach Rogers after the game. Baylor shot 8-35 from the 3pt line and while they did manage to win, those numbers are going to have to come down.

Kevin Rogers and Mamaodu Diene both had double doubles to lead the Bears to a big victory, including some big offensive rebounds in OT to allow Baylor to eat up a good amount of clock.

Devan Downey did manage to bring the Gamecocks back in the game however, scoring 17 points in the 2nd half, but the Gamecocks were just to tired in OT.

Baylor only has 1 day to rest as they travel to take on Southern this Friday.

                        Baylor Record: 8-0
