Tampa Bay Buccs | Offseason report

    Game: Madden 2003 | Season: 2003
    ------------------------------------------------
    Latest headline:
Offseason Moves No Surprise, Cap Room Gained

Shattering a relatively quiet offseason so far was the news that two high profile, high salary players were traded. Simeon Rice was traded to the Seattle Sea Hawks and Doug Christy went to the Baltimore Ravens.

The moves were mainly made to give the Buccs some salary cap breathing room, but they did acquire at least one quality player in the deals. They received center Robbie Tobek from Seattle to plug the hole left by Christy's departure.

    RELEASED PLAYERS
QB - Joey Hamilton, $0 cap penalty
QB - Shaun King, $0 cap penalty
RB - Byran Hanspard, $0 cap penalty
WR - Frank Murphy, $0 cap penalty
    G - Matt Campbell, $0 cap penalty
LB - Jack Golden, $0 cap penalty
LT - Roman Oben, $0 cap penalty
WR - Kieth Poole, $0 cap penalty
RT - Jerry Wunsch, $750K penalty
CB - Anthony Midget, $0 cap penalty
FS - Dexter Jackson, $0 cap penalty
QB - Rob Johnson, $0 cap penalty
CB - Corey Ivy, $0 cap penalty
LB - Eugene McCaslin, $0 cap penalty

    RE-SIGNINGS
    MLB Derrick Brooks - $4.25M 3-year contract
    SS John Lynch - $3.40M 3-year contract
    RB Aaron Stecker - $600K 3-year contract
    LB Shelton Quarles - $1.00M 1-year contract
    LB Ashermond Singleton - $1.00M 1-year contract
    T Pete Pierson - $750K 1-year contract
    David Gibson - $600K 3-year contract
    Nate Webster - $1.00M 3-year contract

    TRADES
Traded Simeon Rice for Sea Hawk's C Robbie Tobek (81) and CB Ken Lucas (78)
Traded Doug Christy for Raven's DT Tony Ellis (56) and WR Ron Johnson (68)

Christy's progression was on the the decline -- and when focusing in on his very average numbers during last season compared to what's expected with his kind of salary, the Buccs decided to trade and free up some cap room. With the move, the Buccaneers cap room increased to $16.15 million

Headline: Buccs Hunt for New Punter Lands Hunter Smith
    ============================================
The Buccs filled the punter roster spot with 25 year old Hunter Smith (6'2", 212 lbs). Smith, a 4-year veteran, has a career 44.2 punting average. He spent his whole career with the Indianapolis Colts before being released in the offseason. He signed a one year contract for $1.05 million.

Smith has descent kicking power (90) but struggles with accuracy (88). He notched 10 touchbacks (compared to a league leading 20 by NY Giant's Rodney Williams' last year). Smith put the opponent inside the 20 yard line 19 times (compared to a league leading 39 by Redskins's Bryan Barker). Smith's longest punt is 69 yards.

Tampa Bay is still eyeing the upcoming Draft for quality punters. It is speculated that the Buccs may use either their second or third round pick to grab Maryland's Brooks Barnard (NCAA punting stats: 46 punts, 45.0 avg., 13 inside the 20, longest 63).

Note: I exported my Draft Class to Madden for this season
