As the 2003 season opens for the North Siders, along with it are new hopes. The Cubs have made some personnel moves, most importantly being the acquirement of Dusty Baker. General Manager Henry Hughes is quoted as saying.
"Getting Dusty is going to be huge for this team, he's a winner and I know he can bring that same attitude here."

After unleashing a wicked curveball, Wood grabbed his elbow and was escorted off the mound. Wood will be out for 71 days with torn ligaments in his elbow. The Cubs did win the game on the strength of homers by Grudzielanek and Sosa. The final was 10-4.Comment

Juan Cruz has been called up from Iowa and will be placed in Wood's spot in the starting rotation. Optioning Bobby Hill down to Iowa.
