    NCAA 2004: TCU Dynasty

Well.. I wasn't planning on doing one of these, but after my 1st year, I think I will pick up with it; if for nothing else, so that I can remember what happened.

I played the 2003 season on default AA. 2004 will be on Abner's sliders now that they are released.

The 2003 season was beyond expectations.. and I got lucky on more than one occasion.. Default schedule (rediculously easy), default teams.. My team was a B- overall. here are the results:

    Texas Christian University 2003 13-0 (8-0)

    Code:
     @ Tulane W 31-13
    Navy W 34-27
    Vanderbilt W 40-31
    @ Arizona W 30-24
    Army W 48-17
    @USF W 58-0
    UAB W 31-16
    @Houston W 35-10
    Louisville W 43-14
    Cincinnatti W 47-6
    # 17 So. Miss W 30-3
    @ SMU W 62-10

    Rose Bowl:
    #9 Oregon State W 22-9

Southern Miss was #17 only at the time of our game. They were missing their 4 best starting O-Linemen, and the rest is history. Oregon State was a tough game that was within one score till the end, but that is to be expected. They over-achieved a bit I think, as my team did but came out Pac 10 champs and proved to be a challenge anyway.

I was slated to be in the Liberty Bowl until the last week, where 5 teams ranked ahead of us lost. So it was kind of flukey that we made it to begin with, but I guess we made the most of it.

After the season, I signed a 5 year contract extension with the school.

Next up, the team and their performance.

    TCU Comes up Roses

    My key players:
HB Lonta Hobbs, So. 87 ovr.
DE Chad Schobel, Sr. 88 ovr.
DT Chad Pugh, Sr. 86 ovr.
LG Johnathan Glud, Sr. 87 ovr.
OLB Marvin Patterson, Jr. 84 ovr.
K Nick Browne, Sr. 89 ovr.

    Awards
HB Hobbs - Heisman Memorial Trophy, Maxwell, Best RB award, 1st team All-American.
    DT Pugh - 1st team All-American.
    LG Glud - 1st team All-American.
    K Nick Browne - 2nd team All-American.
    Best Coach - Me. Muahahaha.

    Records
HB Hobbs set an NCAA record for most rushing yards in a season, and new team records for most rushing yards in a season, most TD's in one game, and most rushing yards in one game.

DE Schobel set the school sack record in week 10 and held it until the Rose Bowl. In the second quarter, DT Chad Pugh took the record, which didn't stand for long. On Oregon State's second to last possession, DE Schobel reset the school sack record which would hold on the rest of the game.

Most Valuable Player: HB Lonta Hobbs. Due to a lack of a recieving threat and a need to keep the ball out of the other offense's hands due to weak pass defense, Hobbs was called on to do almost everything in his Sophomore season. He led the team in rushing and recieving for the year and has shown the best talent since LaDanian Tomlinson here in Fort Worth.

Next up: Recruiting and NFL draftees.

2004 Looking like a long road for the Horned Frogs

          Goners..
Unfortunately, I lost mostly everyone of any talent at all on my team. School sack leaders DT Chad Pugh and DE Bo Schobel both graduated, and my two best O-Linemen took off.

Suprisingly, HB Lonta Hobbs did not even consider leaving for the NFL after his Heisman season, citing "unfinished business". LT Anthony Alabi (91 ovr) thought about leaving, but decided to stay.

          Recruiting

The TCU Horned Frogs finished at #2 in the nation last year, and many screamed "playoff" as the 12-1 Ohio State Buckeyes took home their second straight national title (34-27 no less against Miami) in controversial fashion.

Following suit, TCU also nabbed the #2 recruiting class, behind only the Texas Longhorns. TCU's main recruits were a 79 OVR CB with 4.3 speed, and two linebackers who run a 4.4 40. In addition we nailed one LB who will come onto the roster at an 82 OVR. Tackling, as opposed to speed, is his strength. However, all was not rosy for the recruiting. The two most coveted players of the class, a MLB who ran 4.4, and a Center who showed all the promise of a 1st team all american, were nabbed by other schools: Miami and Texas respectively. Nonetheless, our 8 5-star recruits and 12 4-star recruits provide a solid foundation for the future. Losing so many players is tough, but we should have recovered as soon as these young guns are ready for starting roles.

          Offense Overview:

I will have HB Lonta Hobbs, Jr (94 ovr), and QB Tye Gunn, Jr (82 ovr) on offense, with LT Anthony Alabi (91 ovr) on offense. We will fail to field a WR over 69 ovr, and will be playing under 75 ovr at the other skill positions (TE and FB). Alabi is our only lineman above 70's overall. We will be starting freshmen at Guard, Tight End, Fullback, Wide Reciever, Center, and Right Tackle.

The offense is in no better shape than last year. It is more top-heavy and the passing game looks to be anemic compared to last year; which says something. Although QB Tye Gunn passed for 18 TD's, he also had 8 picks and did not throw for over 2,000 yards. In addition, our HB was our best reciever - and we have lost tons of talent at the WR position this offseason. We will have trouble scoring points against the better run-stoppers this year, and Lonta Hobbs will likely have to contend with D-Linemen in the backfield more often than last year.

          Defense Overview:

We lost DE Bo Schobel (88) and DT Chad Pugh (86), not to mention our starting MLB, LOLB, and two starting corners. We will be filling these spots in with 5th year seniors most likely, but will have freshmen who are not far behind. The only 2 positions on the defense which we will field a player above 70's ovr is 1) at ROLB, where Martin Patterson, a senior will play at 90 overall. He is a very sure tackler but not very fast. We will likely start freshmen at the other 2 LB positions. We will likely play Chaz Hatcher, the freshman stud MLB (82 ovr) at MLB, and play one of our 4.4 running LB's (one is a ROLB, the other a MLB.. 87 and 85 speed respectively) at LOLB and redshirt the other. Our pass defense looks to have some holes just as last year, but it has more potential, with some speedy freshmen running the field.

          Special Teams Overview:
We lost our all-american kicker and our starting punter, and were left with nothing. We recruited solid replacements at both positions, but neither will measure up to what we had last year. We will likely make up for these losses with more speed in the return game.

Overall, our team is rated approximately the same as last year. We are much younger, but our ratings are similar: B overall, B- Offense, B- Defense, B+ Special Teams.

          The Polls See...
A rough year for the TCU Horned Frogs. We begin the season with a preseason ranking of #16 overall, a drop of 14 spots from the end of last season. Evidently, the writers at Sports Illustrated feel that the losses are too great to be overcome in just one year.

Re: 2004 Looking like a long road for the Horned Frogs

Our Schedule next year is typical C-USA. Pretty cheesy except So. Miss and Louisville. Non-Conference I have #24 UCLA, rivalry vs. SMU, Boston College, and Rice. This is a two-star schedule (I had 1 star last year.. so this must be twice as hard!!! lol.), so if anyone has any suggestions on who they'd like to see me play in 2004, go ahead and post 'em here and I'll pick a team to stick on there. Rice just isn't doing it for me.. lol.

(On a side note: Maybe the Pac-10 is interested in annexing TCU? Maybe they want to see me take on UCLA to see if I'd compete better than one of their slouches.. I'd rather join the ACC, Big 12, or Big East.. or SEC.. but hey.. still would join if I got an offer!)

TCU Kicks off the season with a scare

Fort Worth (AP) - #16 TCU escaped Tulane this week 20-17 at home, to start the season 1-0. Last year's heisman winning HB, Lonta Hobbs, was one of several bright spots for the Horned Frogs, as he ran for 248 yards and a TD, with 18 yards recieving. QB Tye Gunn had an awful day, completing less than 30% of his passes and throwing a pick to put Tulane back in the game.
Tulane had a chance to tie the game with :48 seconds left in the 4th quarter, when they missed a field goal from TCU's 25 yard line.
TCU had many missed opportunities and many miscues on the day. In the 2nd quarter, on a 3rd and short, QB Tye Gunn had Lonta Hobbs open on a streak to the endzone and overthrew him by inches at the goalline. Additionally, backup CB Mark Walker fumbled 2 punts, one on his own 5 yard line - both would translate into Tulane touchdowns.
Freshmen standouts included MLB Chaz Hatcher, who had 8 tackles, including 3 for a loss, and a sack. Also shining bright were LE Donnelly and DT Johnson, who had 2 sacks themselves.
However, the freshmen class's first game in Frog Purple was bitter sweet. Highly touted blue-chip CB Darin Bond (79 ovr) dislocated his elbow on his second punt return and will miss 7 weeks. This leaves TCU with only 3 CB's, none of which with speed at 80 or above. Look for TCU to possibly take the redshirt off the speedy freshman FS recruited this past season and possibly play him at corner.

TCU travels to Knoxville, Tennessee, for their toughest scheduled game of their young careers. Head Coach Rob Dudzinsky's 14-0 record in the NCAA is in serious danger, and facing 3 wideouts over 85 overall without your number 1 corner will not help.

It's going to be a tough game on the road, and if we're to have any chance at all, we're going to have to be flawless.

                      TCU: 20
                      Tulane: 17

Player of the game: HB Lonta Hobbs, 248 yards rushing, 1 TD, 2 receptions, 18 yards.

Next week: The #13 Horned Frogs travel to Knoxville to take on the #17 Tennessee Volunteers.
