    UCLA Bruins (C.Hobbes)

In a strange turn of events, the front office of the UCLA Bruins was forced to make a few changes before the season got underway. Their newly hired coach, Karl Dorrell, who never coached a game for the Bruins, stepped down from the position. He felt that although football meant a great deal to him, he needed to put his family first. After this shock finally hit the front office, they immediately called upon Coach Calvin Hobbes, who is better known for coaching the Cincinatti men's basketball team and, for a brief period, the Detroit Tigers.

    Game 1: UCLA @ Colorado

    @

    First Quarter
Winning the opening coin toss, the Bruins elected to receive the opening kickoff. Right from the get go, the Buffalo must've sensed trouble, as the kick was returned for 45 yards. The UCLA offense had no trouble getting to a good start, as Tyler Ebell got the pitch on the first play, and took it 43 yards for the touchdown.

    Second Quarter
The second quarter was much of the same, as the Bruins ran the Colorado defense out of their shoes. Ebell continued to have a big game, carrying for a big run after big run. The air attack also got underway for UCLA, as quarterback Drew Olson threw his first touchdown of the year to wide receiver Craig Bragg.

    Third Quarter
Colorado received the ball to open the second half, and got off to a much better start than expected. Right off the bat, their senior tailback, Bobby Purify, carried the ball for a big gain. Soon after, quarterback Joel Klatt threw a touchdown pass to get the Buffalo on the board. UCLA, however, was still up big.

    Fourth Quarter
Again, the Bruins took control of the ball in the final stage of the game. By using an affective running attack, UCLA controlled the clock well, burning sufficient amounts of time in their drives. When the game of keep-away was finally over, the Bruins took the victory over Colorado by the score of 38-17.

    Key Players

    Ebell - 27 att., 212 yards, 2 TD
    Bragg - 4 rec., 77 yards; 6 PR, TD
    Olson - 10-27, 182 yards, TD, 2 INT
    Clark - 3 Tackles, 2 INT, TD

    Purify - 13 att., 11 yards
    Klatt - 12-27, 2 TD, 3 INT
    McCoy - 5 rec., 105 yards, TD
    Hackett - 4 rec., 77 yards, TD

          Game 2: Illinois @ UCLA

          @

          First Quarter
Winning the coin toss, the visiting team of Illinois chose to receive the first kickoff of the game. This didn't seem to phase the Bruins much, as they forced the Fighting Illini to go three-and-out on their first possession. Obviously bringing the same mindstate from the Colorado game, Tyler Ebell started off hot against Illinois. He got the toss on two straight plays to open the offensive series for UCLA, and on the second toss, exploded for a 25 yard touchdown run. The UCLA defense again shutdown the Illini offense, and forced them to punt. The Bruins drove downfield with an aggressive running and passing attack, and eventually scored. This was the theme for the entire game...

          Second Quarter
As if their offense wasn't enough, the UCLA defense decided to put up some points against Illinois. On a bad pass by the Fighting Illini quarterback, strong safety Jarrad Page picked off the throw and ran it back for a touchdown. The Bruins' defense proved to be as strong as advertised, pleasing Coach Calvin Hobbes, going into the half with a 49-0 lead!

          Third Quarter
By this time, Coach Hobbes figured he would give his first string offense the rest of the day off. Even without their offensive stars on the field, the Bruins found ways of scoring on the ground and through the air. Second string tailback Akil Harris battled it out on the ground, while receiver Jacques Lazarus tore up the Illinois secondary.

          Fourth Quarter
UCLA dominated the final quarter, as they did the entire game. They controlled the clock, hoping to get this blowout over with as soon as possible. Finally, when all was said and done, the Bruins backed away from the game victorious, beating down the Fighting Illini by the score of 65-0!!

          Key Players

          Ebell - 16 att., 178 yards, 4 TD
          Bragg - 6 rec., 102 yards, 2 TD
          Olson - 12-23, 146 yards, 2 TD
          Chillar - 7 tackles, 4 TFL

          Jones - 3 rec., 71 yards
          Williams - 6 tackles
          Virgil - 5 KR, 103 yards
          Beutjer - 7-22, 98 yards, 4 INT, 7 sacks

I'm loving this journal. The format reminds me of the North Texas one... They both look good ! I'm also liking the helmets and each quarter has a recap.

Good luck against OKL..you are really gonna need it against the nations best defense.

                      Game 3: UCLA @ Oklahoma

                      @

                      First Quarter
After making the decision to receive the opening kickoff, the Sooners must've had in mind a blowout for this game. On the very first drive of the game, Jason White and Mark Clayton hooked up for a 40 yard touchdown pass. Oklahoma later added another touchdown, leaping out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

                      Second Quarter
Obviously getting an earful of critique and nonstop yelling during the transition between the first and second quarters, the Bruins got motivated. The offense started to click more and more, and the defense settled down and stopped giving up the big plays. They inched toward the goal line, and let Tyler Ebell pound it in for the first UCLA score of the day. The Sooners later added another touchdown, padding their comfortable cushion, going up 21-7.

                      Third Quarter
After receiving the kickoff to start the second half, the Bruins' offense seemed shakey again, and were unable to spark anything productive. They were forced to go three-and-out numerous times during the quarter, but eventually had quarterback Drew Olson and wideout Craig Bragg hook up for a touchdown. Again, Oklahoma answered with a touchdown of their own, keeping their 14 point lead.

                      Fourth Quarter
UCLA took the field with anger in the fourth quarter, and for a good reason. The aggressive Sooner defense had shut them down all day long, and they were unable to obtain any type of momentum. However, Tyler Ebell, put his legs to work in the fourth. After holding Oklahoma to a three-and-out series with only two minutes remaining in the game, Ebell lead UCLA down the field. He finished off the drive himself, pounding the ball into the endzone for a score, making the score 28-21 in favor of the Sooners. After holding the Sooner offense yet again, the Bruins' offense charged upfield. Connecting on two fourth down conversions gave them the needed momentum, and allowed them to tie up the game on a touchdown pass from Olson to tightend Will Peddie. With only 14 seconds remaining in the game, the Bruins kicked the ball off. After a good return put the Sooner offense on the 40 yard line, they had enough time for one more play. Jason White hurled the Hail Mary downfield... only to be picked off by Matt Ware! Ware picked up a few blocks, and returned the ball all 90 yards for the winning touchdown, giving the Bruins the upset win over the #1 Oklahoma Sooners, 35-28.

                          Game 3: UCLA @ Oklahoma
