With Just 4 weeks to go before Game 1 of the regular season, the Atlanta Falcons were coming to terms with the shock change of franchise ownership as Arthur Blank sold the team to UK entrepreneur Olav de Vries. In a brief statement released to the media the new owner had this to say.
"The fanbase for American Football has become global, no more so than the ever increasing number of fans from the United Kingdom. Arthur was wishing to enter retirement soon and felt that he could not put all his efforts into the team and wanted to make sure that the recent success built under General Manager Thomas Dimitroff and HC Mike Smith would not be affected. I feel we can take this franchise to the next level and over the next few years add further pieces to the foundations already laid and make this team into a potential dynasty. I have no plans to change any of the current managment structure but will be looking to invest in the team and make it stronger. I believe this franchise is going places and by growing its fanbase across the world, we can make it as good as some of the famous teams over the years."
It remains to be seen if Olav de Vries sticks to his word and the pressure will be surely on the team and the managment to perform this season so there is no further upheaval or major changes.
In an early statement of intent, the Falcons have aquired defense end Adewale Ogunleye on a two year £15.82m contract to bolster the Falcons pass rush.
In other early moves, Defensive back Brian Williams and Defensive End Chauncey Davis have been released.
With game 1 of the pre-season round the corner, it will be interesting to see if the Falcons handle the expected pressure. Matt Ryan enters his 3rd year as the franchise Quarter Back and Michael Turner looks fitter than ever. These two will be integral to the success or failure of the franchise.
