ESPN NBA 2004 Nuggets Franchise, 2nd attempt.

First of all, WOOHOO! I can finally post stats properly...

I've decided to start over, this time with sliders via Arena/Wally. I've made a few less trades, this time I'm not as close to my old roster, but this way I won't be taking advantage of having too many rookies etc.

This post, if possible, will be edited with up to date player and team averages, my record, and any players that are doing specifically well in certain areas of the league. The setup I will be using is as follows.

    82 Game Season
Everything else set up to default (Pre-season on, etc)
    8 minute quarters
11 minute simulations (Appears to be most accurate)

I have simulated the first 3 games of my own season, to catch up to my old one. The easiest way I might get frustrated is having to continuously play the same games. Interstingly enough, I won all 3 games in simulation. The games were 2 at home wins against the Spurs and Kings, and an away game in Houston.

    Here goes.

    Your 2003-2004 Denver Nuggets!

    Starting Roster
    PG - Jason Williams
    SG - Jiri Welsch
    SF - Carmelo Anthony
    PF - Nene Hilario
    C - Arvydas Sabonis

    Bench Roster
    PG - Earl Boykins
SG - Jon Barry, Rodney White*
SF - Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Ryan Bowen*
    PF - Chris Andersen
    C - Marcus Camby

    * Indicates "Bottom of the Bench" or players who will only play when fouls require, or a blowout occurs.

    Key Off-Season Moves
    SIGNINGS:
    Arvydas Sabonis, 7 years @ 53k
Head Coach Larry Larson, 5 years @ 130k
Assistant Coach Stephen Poole, 5 years @ 17k
    Trainer Mack Harris, 5 years @ 60k
    Scout Leslie Townsend, 5 years @ 100k

    TRADES:
Andre Miller/Mark Pope for Jason Williams/2nd Round Draft Pick
Voshon Lenard/Jeff Trepangier for Jiri Welsch/2nd Round Draft Pick

I play a very much team oriented style basketball. I like to play a lot of 2-man basketball with Sabonis and Jon Barry when the opportunity permits, they both pass well and Barry is my go-to guy for 3pt shots.

My number one priority is that my players rebound, and number two play defense. The fast break points will come since I have a deep bench and noone plays to exhaustion, however on bad shooting nights I NEED rebounds. Luckily this has never been a problem, and with Hilario and Camby in there I often find my offensive boards nearing my defensive boards in number!

I'm very happy that I can do that ^^^^^. As of right now I'm just going to do the starters, but for games I'll have complete box scores. Perhaps at some points I'll decide that this isn't time consuming enough, and add the rest of the team!

My prediction? Sadly I'd love to predict something other than 82-0, but with a coaching staff as incredible as the one we have now...

    Game 4, Nuggets @ Pacers

As mentioned, I'm going to start off with game 4 as I simulated the first 3 games so that it was caught up with my previous franchise. I'll start off the with game story, followed by the box score.

For the first 2 quarters, things stayed pretty close. We were matched for offensive boards, fast breaks, and even incredible plays (A spectacular alley-oop to O'Neal, and an insane dunk from the baseline by Anthony... I don't know how far it was, but I saved the replay.)

Then the third quarter came along. I forgot to mention that while looking at the starting lineups, O'Neal and Reggie Miller were On Fire, while Nene was Ice Cold. This quarter was indeed Miller Time as he seemed to come of pick after pick and drain shots on me. 2s, 3s, I wasn't safe anywhere. Thinking back I should have put Ryan Bowen on him, a relatively quick SF with good blocking skill.

Toward the end of the third, I decided to check out my stats and shot chart, and see what my strengths were. To no surprise, seeing the score, I saw that Williams, Welsch, and Nene were all performing poorly. This saw me start the 4th quarter lineup that ultimately won me the game. Barry, Anthony, Andersen, Camby, Sabonis.

With Anthony on Miller, I was able to give him a little to worry about being guarded by a taller player who could also muscle him in the post on offense. Camby was guarding O'Neal, save Shaq or Yao Ming, I'll trust Camby to guard PF/C in the league.

That brang us to 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter, I had kept up with them, but they still had a 6 pt lead. I called a timeout during their free throws, and was prepared to take this game the best way I know how. Get the ball to Sabonis, post up, and pass it to Barry for the eventual 3, or pass it to a cutter when they come to double team.

It worked, I cut the lead 2 with :49 to go. Barry brings the ball up to the top of the 3pt line, I bring Sabonis out for the pick and roll to try and take the 3. They had none of it, they moved over to guard Barry but at the same time left Sabonis open on the wing. I'm not about to take a 3 with Sabonis, so I stepped inside the line and drained it.

With a full court press on, tinsley was trapped in his half by Barry and Camby, he tried to lob it over the top of them but Anthony jumped out and stole the pass intended for Reggie. He charged full-on toward the net, getting ready for the dunk, but Jermaine O'Neal was waiting... He had fouled Anthony hard earlier in the game, so at the right time Anthony kicked it out to Sabonis, who moved into the high post, and again kicked it out to Barry for 3!

I knew I had Reggie Miller on my hands, if that three wasn't blocked, it was going in. I called a 2-3 zone, and moved Camby and Andersen to the front with Barry and Anthony on the outside. I let them pass the ball to Reggie and sure enough he ran around a pick and let fly the three ball... Unfortunately Camby had a hand in his face, and the ball clanged off the rim. Sabonis grabbed his board and ran up the floor, this is when I made the mistake that could have cost me the game...

Sabonis had the ball at halfcourt with 10 seconds to go, they didn't have any timeouts left, and ran over to foul. To my surprise tinsley grabbed the ball from Sabonis as if Sabonis was asleep! Luckily Andersen was back to contest the upcoming shot, and it clanged off the rim as well!

Your player of the game, Arvydas Sabonis! 22 pts, 20 boards, 6 assists and 2 steals!

Your score, 107-104 Nuggets! We start the season 4-0.

    Tinsley - 18 assists, 5 pts, 4 TO

It was a great game, went right down to the last shot. Reggie's clutch could have come through and taken it to overtime. I would have had about 5 seconds to prevent overtime.

Barry and Camby continue to bring me great scoring punch off the bench, Andersen could develop into something great as well.

As attractive as that box score is, its time consuming, so I will be looking into other ways to do with. I recall hearing about one website that automated it, but it doesn't work for the NBA yet.
