    The Woj Report
Woj: Davis Bertans unhappy, wants out of Washington

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN is reporting that forward Davis Bertans of the Washington Wizards is unhappy with the organization and has requested to be released or traded.

The 6-foot-10, Latvian three-point-sniper's longtime agent, Arturs Kalnitis, has reportedly been in contact with the Wizards management in order to get a deal done in a swift manner.

"Winning is an important aspect of Bertan's future," says Kalnitis. "Playing for the Spurs in his first few season, winning is all he knows. He wants that feeling again."

Bertans, a dead-eye shooter, spent his first three seasons with San Antonio -- and now at just 27 years old, is looking to be a contributing factor on a winning team. He can definitely provide a spark off the bench or even start on most championship contenders.

"Right now the leading candidates for his services are Houston, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia," says Woj. "Of course this depends on the asking price, but these teams, at this point seem to be showing the most interest and that seems to be mutual on both sides."

Wojnarowski reported that Miami could also be in the mix, and they have the most CAP space available to work with, which could be very enticing for Washington to unload a bad contract or two. However, don't expect John Wall's contract to be unloaded with the likes of a player with Bertans' caliber, while an important and valuable contributing piece, he's simply not talented enough to garner that much pull.

At this time there have been no reported trade offers with any further details of actual trade packages.

NBA Draft: First impressions of the hits and head-scratchers

Full disclosure — assigning grades to a draft that just happened is typically foolish. Today’s reaches are tomorrow’s steals, and today’s sure things are just as likely to disappoint.

It’s an inexact science, and judging it in the immediate aftermath is even trickier when you view it as just part of an offseason puzzle that will be filled in over the next seven days. But it’s a fun exercise where you can try to judge the way teams navigated the road that was before them.

OK, now that I will not be held responsible for any of these evaluations, let’s get to it.

      FAVORITE PICKS

      No. 3 Charlotte: LaMelo Ball

The Hornets didn’t overthink this. Yeah there’s a lot of noise surrounding any player with this last name, the comparisons to his brother, the influence of his father. Ultimately the Hornets end up with a player that some scouts thought was the most talented in the draft.

Ball has a chance to be a star, and that matters even more in places like Charlotte, where top-tier free agents haven’t seriously considered as a place to sign.

      No. 6 Atlanta: Onyeka Okongwu

The Hawks address a huge need by getting a versatile defender who can play either spot in the frontcourt. The stress fracture in his big toe didn’t derail his draft night, and he ended up on the same roster as Trae Young.

Plus, the moment with his mother on draft night was one of the most emotional.

      No. 12 Sacramento: Tyreese Haliburton

Haliburton slid out of the top 10, one of the night’s biggest surprises, but it seems like the Kings will benefit. He fits really well next to point guard De’Aaron Fox and seems like a no-drama player for an organization that could use more guys like that.

          That's really funny

Next question. Why does the code show up as a large white space in preview, but when you press post the video appears? lol

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Matters were turned to the hands of CSUN freshman quarterback Derrick Sims-Mercier in the game's most vital moments as the team watched starter Jelani Gilchrist leave the contest injured.

Sims-Mercier overcame two straight incompletions, a sack, and a critical red zone penalty to cap the Matadors' final drive of regulation with a four-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Holster to force overtime.

Gilchrist, in an iconic overtime return, found receiver Da'Sean Stevens in the corner of the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown as CSUN (5-1, 2-1) defeated Cal Poly (2-5, 0-3) 33-30.

                    Box Score

The duo of quarterbacks finished with mere identical numbers; 65 passing yards – which Sims-Mercier achieved on the final drive alone – and 65 rushing yards. Gilchrist, however, threw two interceptions to go on par with CSUN’s two takeaways against Poly, both on fumble recoveries.

“Those are the type of moments I love being in,” said Sims-Mercier, who attempted his game’s nine passes on the drive, completing six.

CSUN nearly forced another fumble late in the fourth quarter as the defense stripped the ball loose from Tanner Trosin only for it to be recovered and later turned in for Poly’s go-ahead touchdown run by Akaninyene Umoh with 1:56 left.

The Mustangs took the first possession in the overtime period but were forced to settle for a field goal from 36 yards out. CSUN and Gilchrist stalled on their first two plays, but the junior quarterback ended up delivering the game-winning pass to Stevens just as his pocket collapsed.

“I had confidence behind [the throw],” Gilchrist said. “The line gave me some time to see things out, but I saw a guy coming off the edge and so I knew I had to make a quick decision.”

CSUN’s 130 yard passing performance was their best of the season thus far. Da’Sean Stevens recorded three receptions for 49 yards while freshman Wyatt Zyskowski added another pair for 37 yards.

Against a fellow – and more experienced – option team in Poly, the Matadors outgained them 314-292 on the ground. Jake Brito paced the CSUN offense with 95 yards while the Mustangs’ Umoh took 25 carries for 131 yards.

CSUN’s offensive guard Leslie Bennett recovered and scored a fumbled +20-yard run by Brito inside the end zone in during third quarter. The touchdown proved to be well needed as Poly went on to score two consecutive touchdowns in a 10 second span behind Umoh’s first of two scores followed by a 28-yard pick six by defensive end Nick Dzubnar.

Dzubnar, a touted NFL prospect, played in his first meeting against his brother, Colin, who transferred from Poly to CSUN last year.

“Was it perfect? Not at all,” Matadors coach Dumon Moran said. “But it was one heck of a football game.”

MWC MEDIA DAYS: HAUCK LOOKS TO LIMIT DISTRACTIONS
By Matthew Gaines on June 22, 2013 at 3:28a

MWC MEDIA DAYS | UNLV FOOTBALL

LAS VEGAS — Bobby Hauck represented the ninth of 12 coaches to take the MWC Media Days podium Tuesday at The Cosmopolitan.

With Las Vegas Stadium in mind, Hauck used his opening statement to eliminate any talks of future conference realignment among other things lying ahead in UNLV's suddenly-turned fate.

“What we’ve been gratefully presented by Las Vegas should certainly improve the stability and state of our program,” Hauck said of the stadium. “But like any other time, our focus is narrowed immensely upon how we can improve here in 2013.”

Since leaving Montana in 2010 as the second winningest coach in program history, the bright lights of Vegas have pinned mostly turmoil on Hauck’s career. The third-year Rebel coach has won only two games in each of his three seasons, compiling a record of 6-32, the second lowest winning percentage among all active FBS coaches.

Speculation aimed for Hauck’s firing back in January, but instead he returns for another opportunity to right the UNLV ship, and potentially remain in their future plans.

“I’m 100-percent committed to this program,” Hauck said. “We’re not where most would like us to be, but when I accepted this job I knew exactly what I was in for. It’s a process. But I’m very happy to say we’re headed in the right direction.”
