Re: The Story of Head Coach Robert Power

Cardinals Offense Too Much For Black Knights; Spoil Power's Debut.

Robert Power's Div. 1A coaching debut wasn't something to be remembered as his team was beaten down by the 17th ranked team in the nation the now 2-0 Louisville Cardinals.

'We tried to keep up with them,' Power said, 'But their passing game was just too much for us to handle.'

The Black Knights did jump out to the early 3-0 lead but then the Louisville offense came alive scoring two touchdowns in a little over two minutes to take the 14-3 lead.

The teams exchanged field goals before a sixty-nine yard interception return for a touchdown by Senior Line-Backer, Robert McCune put the game on ice for Louisville.

The Black Knights were able to add a touchdown late in the game on a twenty-six yard scamper by Fullback Tielor Robinson.

It made no difference however as the Cardinals came out on top by a score of 34-13.

Army did have a couple of bright spots. First on the offensive side of the ball. Running back Carlton Jones had 31 carries for 121 yards but no touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, Defensive End Thomas Ryan Jr. set the school record for the most sacks in a game with four today. He had a total of eight tackles, seven of which were behind the line of scrimmage, a forced fumble as well as a fumble recovery.

Next up for the Black Knights are the 1-1 University of Houston Cougars down in the lone star state next weekend.

Re: The Story of Head Coach Robert Power

Power Gets First Victory in OT.

A 32 yard field goal must have seemed about one hundred yards longer to Army Head Coach Robert Power during his teams first possession of overtime in a 13-13 game with conference rivals Houston.

A thirty-two yarder should be almost automatic for any kicker, even under overtime pressure. And yet, Army head man Power was still pacing around on his sideline holding his hands on his head.

And the kick was good. right down the middle of the uprights with plenty of distance to spare. That look of worry that was on the coach's face just a few moments earlier had now changed to an expression of sheer joy. It was made even better by that first Gatorade shower of your career.

'There really is no better feeling,' Power said, 'Not just because it cooled me down in the Texas heat, but because it was that feeling that everything that you have worked for has paid off.'

In this game, it wasn't the running game that kept the Knights in it. Ironicly it was the usually horrid passing game that came up well enough to keep the team in the game at key moments and eventually get them in position for the winning field goal in overtime.

Although it wasn't stellar by any means the offense was barely good enough to keep the Cougar defense off balance using a majority of running plays mixed in with a few pass plays here and there the Knights were able to march down the field several times but were only able to capitalize twice when the got into the red zone during regulation.

'That's one thing that we're going to have to work on,' Head Coach Robert Power said. 'If there is one weakness to this team it's that it doesn't have the greatest red zone play on either side of the ball.'

Power seemed to be speaking for the offense when he said this because the defense was certainly able to keep the Cougar offense at bay when they got inside the twenty yard line. Making them go 0-4 during the game.

'If there is one thing that's improved since last week it's our defense,' Power said, 'We don't give up on any play because these guys realise now that the play isn't over until that whistle goes.'

Next up for the now 1-1 Black Knights is a trip to Hartford to take on the 2-1 UCONN Huskies.

Black Knights Improve Offense; Put Huskies To Sleep

Running Back Carlton Jones rushed for 122 yards on 22 carries and added his first two rushing touchdowns of the season on the way to a 26-7 victory to move his team to 2-1 on the season.

'Carlton(Jones) is always a strong runner,' Army Head Coach Robert Power said. 'You give him the ball and he'll find a hole to get through.'

An even better sign for the Black Knights is that their passing game finally seems to be showing slight signs of life.

Junior Quarterback Zac Dahman went an unimpressive 13 for 34 but did manage to throw for a modest 234 yards.

'I'm glad to see we're starting to get things going on the passing front. Zac(Dahman) is finally starting to make the right reads and it's paying off,' Robert Power said.

But the most impressive part of the victory for Army today was the defense. Coming up with five sacks, including three from defensive end Will Sullivan.

They managed to hold the Huskies(2-2) offense to just 124 total offensive yards including just 24 yards on the ground.

'Our defense has been our anchor all season long,' Black Knights Defensive Coodinator James Franklin. 'Navy had better watch out because we're singing last this year, loud and proud.'

This is the frist time since 1997 that Army has won back to back games when the defeated Rutgers and then Colgate. The players hope that this streak will be able to continue.

'Navy, Conference USA, the entire country better watchout because we're back.' Running Back Carlton Jones said.

Next up for the 2-1 Black Knights is a conference tilt with 2-1 TCU next week in West Point.

Black Knights Improve to 3-1 On Season

The 3-1 TCU Horned Frogs took a trip to West Point today to take on the surprisingly 2-1 Army Black Knights. And they were in for a bigger challenge then they had expected.

Army opened up the scoring with four and a half minutes to go in the first quarter when Tielor Robinson ran the ball in from one yard out to give Army the early 7-0 lead.

A lead that was extended to ten after a twenty-eight yard field goal early in the second quarter.

TCU came storming back however. TCU cut the lead down to three points just before the end of the third quarter on a two yard scamper by Billy Overshown. The knotted the game up at tens just fifty-five seconds in to the fourth quarter on a twenty-nine yard field goal by Mike Wynn.

It was all for not however as the Black Knights regained the lead with 1:18 to go in regulation on a twenty-six yard field goal by Robert Stoegbauer.

'Good teams just win, Great teams are able to come back when they're down and win,' Rober Power said after the game.

Zac Dahman continued to get the passing game going as he went 13-29 and threw for 124 yards but still had two interceptions.

'We've got to work with him(Zac) to continue to make better reads then the ones he's been making so that we can get the interception number down,' Quarterbacks coach Greg Hynes said after the game.

The Army Black Knights will look to go to 4-1 next week when they play host to the 3-2 Cincinnati Bearcats.
