    The Greatest Dane.....

A season in the life of the Albany Great Danes with their brand new head coach.....*flash bulbs popping all over the conference room*from Conover, NC Joe Steele!!!!! We are glad to have him aboard as our head coach and hopefully can put together a winning tradition. Let's give a big hand to our new head coach Mr. Joe Steele!!!!!!!!! *walks into room and sits down at the conference table* "Thank you Chancelor Jeff Timmons. Thank you to the entire athletic dept here at Albany for taking a chance on a unproven head coach with no experience whatsoever. I eat, sleep, and drink college hoops though so it's not like I'm going into this blind. I hope to instill a winning tradition here at Albany. I have met the kids and they are a great bunch of young players here. The cupboard isn't bear by any means, and I think we can surprise some people and make a deep run into the Conference Tourney. They are eagar to learn from me as I am from them so its going to be a great ride and a Season of a Lifetime. I preach on a family atmosphere and really its all about relationships. Winning and losing does matter but relationships last a lifetime. I can't wait to get our kids together, and see what we can do. I preach defense, defense, defense. If you have a off shooting night you can overcome it by playing great defense. So I hope you come out and support us and give our kids a great atmosphere lets enjoy this season!!!! Thank you and good night!!!!!!!!"

    Re: The Greatest Dane.....

The debut of Joe Steele's head coaching career was a very successful one. The Danes started slow against a very game Sacred Heart squad. Falling behind early 15-2. Joe quickly called a timeout to get the jitters out of the young team. They started pounding the ball inside to Chris Wyatt (16 pts, 10 rbs, and 2 blks) and quickly got back into the game. With the inside game flowing the outside game opened up as well. Bryan Wilson (16 pts on 3/4 from 3) drained 3 straight 3's to take the Danes first lead of the game at 25-22. John Iati had a great game from the PG slot as he just kept feeding Wilson, and Wyatt the ball. When that stopped working he started giving it inside to Levi Levine (9 pts on 2/3 fgs and 5/5 fts). So Sacred Heart decided to go zone. Bad idea. Iati then went to work on beating and penetrating the zone. He finished with 13 pts, and 11 assists. In the 2nd half the swarming Dane D wore down Sacred Heart and Albany got their first win of the season and Steele's career 60-47. After the game Joe had this to say about his team's effort "I can say enough how proud I am of these kids. We got off to a slow start and I called a timeout to see what was wrong. They told me that they wanted to win this one for me bad. I said whats wrong with you dont worry about me when it for us not me us. Let your shot be our shot. Don't be afraid to shoot the ball. If I see someone open and they don't take a shot they will be sittin next to me. Don't be afraid to be great fellas. Let's take advantage of this moment. We couldn't play any worse and only down 15-2. Thats 13 pts boys. Let's kick this teams ***!!!!" That they did. Albany shot 44.2% to Sacred Heart's 41.5%. 3/16 from 3 for the Danes while Sacred Heart shot 0/1. The lone guy that ate up the Danes D was Kibue Trim who had 20 pts, 10 rbs, and 3 blks. The Sacred Heart's head coach Dan Morrison had this to say "Albany played great. I thought we came out great but then Joe had them settle down and I knew we were in for a long night. Thats a good basketball team that will only get better. Great first win for Steele tonight I'm happy for him. For us we just have to move on and keep getting better." Sets up a rival game against Seina for the battle of Albany. Saints vs Danes be there or be square!!!!!!!!

St. Louis- The media from all over the country has now swarmed to where all roads have met in St. Louis. 4 teams played from Oct till now to achieve a dream that dream to be crowned the National Champions. In the first Semifinal it will be another Cinderella team the #11 seeded UAB Blazers vs #6 seeded Maryland Terripans. Maryland is the favorite, because they have been here before, and won it all with Gary Williams. In the 2nd semifinal it pits #3 seeded Ga Tech or also known as the Ramblin Wreck vs another Cinderella story. #5 seeded Albany Great Danes led by Joe Steele. Tech is gettin the nod here, because of experience and coming up short in last yr's title game. Paul Hewitt will have this team ready to go. Joe Steele on making the Final Four "This is beyond our wildest dreams. I've been here in 91,92,94,99, and 01. Though it was a spectator cheering on my fav team the Duke Blue Devils. This time I'm gonna be coaching in it. I can't say enough about my team's desire to win. We wre down double digits to the #1 ranked and seeded team in Illinois, along with Wake. I swear it's a ACC convention around here. UNC played Tech, FSU played Maryland, and we played Wake. Only team missing was Duke. Tech is gonna be a challenge we are gonna have to slow the pace of the game down and work for a good shot. If we try and run with them we will get run right out of the gym. I can't wait to let these kids play out their wildest dreams and see if we can shock the world one more time and get to Monday night. I wanna win." Paul Hewitt on Albany "I tell you what that team has a lot of pride. No lead is too big and they don't panic when they are behind. That comes from their coach though. You kiddin me a 21 yr old head coach with over 30 wins and just 1 loss? 2 games away from a title? That's insane. He's a great basketball mind, and I can't wait to match wits with him."

                UPSET IN ST LOUIS!!!!!!

St. Louis (AP)- Either its destiny or a cold wind was swirling around the arena tonight. Albany did it again and to who yet another ACC Team. This time Ga Tech found out what it was like to play stall ball. Albany got the lead early behind a slashing Brent Wilson and then when they got the lead the game pace shifted into theirs for the rest of the game. Tech's great shooters Jack, Bynam, and Elder from 3 combined for 0/15!!! Yes thats right not a single long range bomb connected. The Danes shot 31.1% while they held the Ramblin Wreck to 27% shooting. They also won on the glass 49-43. 44-40 on the defensive end and 5-3 on the offensive end. The bench also came into play as Albany had 14-2 margin in that category. After the game we caught up with Coach Steele. "Wow what can I say. People called me nuts for zoning this team. I was like I've used it all season why not one more time? Sure enough 0/15 from three and we move on to Monday Night. I told our kids as soon as we walk out of this locker room no more celebrating this win. We came here to win it all. Don't listen to everyone that will be blowing smoke up your tails, because I'm gonna tell you they will. We still have a game to play on Monday night. I can't wait to see who we play. Thanks to the NCAA for allowing us to switch and play first. I think that threw Tech off as well." Coach Hewitt had this to say "Well Coach Steele got what he wanted. A slow paced game. We turned it up a notch down 11 and quickly sliced that lead to 1 by trying to turn it into a track meet. However, Joe called timeout and settled his kids down and back to working the clock they went. It really frustrated us, because we love to run and our 3's werent falling so they didnt have to be in a hurry to score on the other end. I want to wish Coach Steele and the Danes good luck on Monday Night. Whoever they play better be ready for a dogfight that zone is killer." UAB upset Maryland in the 2nd semifinal game 94-68 turning it into a track meet. Eddins lead the way with 23 pts on 9-11 shooting. So for the title its #5 seed Albany vs #11 seed UAB. Cinderella is here and one of these will have the slipper fit!!!!!!!!!!!

                    Wow, just wow.
