    Gators Open Season Tonight In
    Jacksonville

Head Coach Billy Donovan hopes to
    produce a seventh straight 20-win
    season.

Jacksonville, FL. - "Soft." "A finess team." "Chokers." "Overrated." These are just some of the labels that the Gator basketball team are desperately trying to shed off of their identity. The Gators seem to have made it a habit of being ranked fairly high in pre-season polls only to take an early exit in the 'Big Dance'. The team has not advanced past the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament since making it to the NCAA Championship game in 2000. A big reason for their early exits along with losing 'key' big games during the season, has been the inablity to compete in the post against bigger, stronger, and more physical teams. This has been an achilles heel for the Gators since....well...forever. The Gators are hoping to change the pattern this season. Gator Head Coach Billy Donovan commented, "Not to make any excuses, but last year, I truely believe that we over-achieved. If you consider everything this team went through (Drejer's sudden departure, injuries, etc...) I think they did a tremendous job of sticking together as a team...These kids have created a special bond with each other and I think that togetherness will only make them stronger this year." The Gators are coming into the season with the return of their big 3, David Lee, Matt Walsh, and Anthony Roberson, along with a talented group of freshman that could make an early impact. The Gators arrive here in Jacksonville for their season opener tonight. They are coming here ranked #15 in the preseason Men's Top 25 poll.

        Gators Lose Home Opener

The Gators struggled to get points
        inside the entire game.

GAINESVILLE, FL- After a shaky 79-68 victory against the Jacksonville Dolphins, the Gators came back home feeling more confident that they got through the "season opening game" jitters. Perhaps, after the 74-82 loss to FAU last night, the Gators may want to re-evalutate themselves as a team. Junior guard Anthony Roberson found himself in early foul trouble, and it proved costly to the Gators as they were unable to get in any offensive rhythm for most of the 1st half. They found themselves playing catch up in the 2nd half and fell short in the final 2 minutes. "Having Anthony in early foul trouble like that really hurt us early in the game. He's our leader, our floor general. He makes this team go", said Gator Head Coach Billy Donovan. Roberson, who finished with 13 wasn't the only Gator that was 'missing in action' last night as the inside game was almost non-existent for the Gators the entire game. That can be credited to FAU's stiff defense down low which included constant double teams and contested almost every single shot inside. Florida forward David Lee did finish with 14 points, however 10 of those 14 points came from the free throw line. Other than Lee, no Florida post men finished the game with more than 2 points. Gator forward Chris Richard said, "That's something we definitely have to work on. We can't have another game like that. We're depending too much on our jumpshots...we won't be doing much this season until we have some kind of presence down low." The Gators may also want to work on their perimeter defense as they allowed FAU to shoot 60% from the field including a 6 for 6 performance from the 3 point line. FAU forward Mike Bell led the way for the Owls with 26 points.

        Final Score: FAU Owls 82
        Florida Gators 74

Leading Scorer: Mike Bell - 26 points
Key Stat: Fred Marshall - 5 for 5 from 3-point range.
        Current Record: 2-0

Leading Scorer: Matt Walsh - 27 points
Key Stat: Adrian Moss, Joakim Noah, Chris Richard - 6 points combined.
        Current Record: 1-1

        Next game: Providence
