Florida Atlantic Season comes crashing down with Tom Herman fired; reach in new direction for next coach

      Welcome to Paradise

(Boca, Raton, FL) - The banners and advertisements showed in Boca Raton upon the hiring of Tom Herman. The ousted Texas Longhorns coach hoping to redeem himself on the coaching carousel of FBS football. The Owls had seen some of their most prolific football under ex-head coach Lane Kiffin. The now Ole Miss head coach caught fire as the Owls head coach. His winning percentage of .675 ranks the highest in school history and numerous NFL level talents saw their careers take off under his tutelage. The years since hadn't been as kind to the Owls who hoped to see a similar spark from Willie Taggert after he had been let go from Florida State, but the trip from Tallahassee to Boca Raton was every bit as unkind as the one from Eugene. Taggert failed to reach .500 in his time with the Owls.

Stepping in the long shadow of Lane Kiffin's short but immensely successful shadow had been damning for the coach, and he ended up being fired after a rough loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers that led to a second consecutive 5-7 season and the Owls missing out on the post season. Taking a third swing at an ousted coach (admittedly Lane's story weaves a different tale as he had a very successful stint as coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama), the Owls landed on Tom Herman. Herman had experience at a mid-major program much like Taggart, helping Houston ascend before a difficult run at Texas led to his termination.

The Tom Herman experience in Boca Raton proved to be a disaster. While the Owls failed to make the post season in any of Taggart's full seasons, the Owls weren't able to surpass 4 wins in any of Herman's seasons at the helm. The team deciding to make the move on after a 2-8 start to the season. The program was spiraling. What had been five years ago an ascending program among the college landscape had quickly fallen from grace and now has been several years removed from postseason play. The glimmers of fire that this young program once had, became nothing more than faded embers of a time past.

Naturally, with their history of landing coaches that had once been among those sought after by the elite programs, the school's athletic department has decided to go in a different direction. To take an opportunity on a new, young coach that hasn't had a taste of coaching at the FBS level. In fact his experience mostly stems from Division 2 West Florida. The Florida Atlantic Owls have agreed to terms with 33 year old Tyler Vail.

Tyler Vail played quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins in 2012-2013 after playing at a junior college in his home state of Illinois. Vail was a decent quarterback, while his name won't be in the Maryland record books and his NFL career ended after bouncing around a few different team's training camps in the few years after his graduation, he soon landed on as a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland. There he had his first experience in the coaching realm, where he stayed for 4 years, at age 25 he took the offensive coordinator position with the Berry Vikings out of Georgia. The Division 3 school proved a good jumping off point for his coaching career, helping guide quarterback Slade Dale to all-conference honors in his first year. The accolades kept coming for the young coach who after 2 more seasons was offered his first collegiate coaching job at West Florida.

With the West Florida Argonauts, the young coach compiled winning records every year, including an offense that ranked near the top of the division and an opportunistic defense that leveraged pressure to make opportunities. His games were high scoring and electric, drawing fans of the sport that outpaced normal attendance for the program. While there was no championships, his performance and a ~.600 winning record caught the eyes of Athletic Director Brian White. The interview only sealed the deal.

"It was time for change. We've brought in talented coaches with a bevy of experience from premier colleges across the land, but we're entering a new era of college football and it's time for a new era of Owl Football. Bringing in [Tyler Vail] allows us to do both of those things. He has success in his coaching stops in his career, and can bring a fresh new energy to our football team that we've been sorely lacking for years now. We are committed to excellence to our community and to our student athletes and this is a step in the right direction."

Charlie Baker works agreement to return normalcy to FBS landscape

(indianapolis, IN) - Chaos broke when the Pacific 12 folded on itself with major colleges opting to join the ACC, Big 12, and B1G conferences. The effect only continued to grow when the Big 12 ended up losing mainstays Oklahama and Texas to the SEC not long after losing Texas A&M to the Southeastern Conference in a move that consolidated powers into three major conferences, with the Big 12 falling just shy outside of the bubble considering the size of their losses compared to their new members they had gained. The concentration in power further solidified the B1G and SEC as premier conferences at the FBS level, but it had a noted impact on the day to day of the student athlete. At schools such as Stanford, the California based institution joined a conference with the majority of his members based on the opposite coast proving to be a substantial logistics challenge, that introduced further problems when considering athletes also had needs to pursue their academic curriculums during athletic seasons that now imposed significant travel constraints.

This also spanned to other sports, which saw the dissolution of Pacific 12 lead to difficulty in maintaining scheduling agreements for sports that don't generate as much revenue as football, or further sinking those athletics into different divisions of collegiate sports to continue their operation. A worrisome trend that drew the focus upon the greater landscape of all collegiate sports. There was however a solution that loomed in light of all of the chaos as schools fought to maximize the revenue of their football programs by aligning themselves accordingly with the major conferences.

The expansion of the college football playoff has offered a tremendous opportunity to revitalize the regional rivalries that drew so much fandom to the college sport, while providing schools access to the highest levels of competition and additional revenue streams. In a call with the commissioners of the major football conferences along with having meetings with the boards of the premier schools, agreements are now in place to restore the college football landscape mostly to it's original landscape.

        The Pacific 12 is reborn.

All schools that had been lost in the reshuffling of the conference rejoin Oregon and Washington State in what was a short-lived two team conference. Returning are Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Utah, USC, California, USCLA, Stanford, Arizona State, and Colorado. The return of these schools to the Pacific 12 means that the planned additions of several Mountain West teams will no longer continue as planned, only Boise State and Colorado State will continue with their move as planned for the 2026 season.

Not only this, but the Big 12 sees a resurgence as anchor programs Texas and Oklahoma return to the conference after a brief stay in the SEC. A move that Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark calls "a big win for parity, the student athletes of these programs, and the conference as a whole". The Big 12 swells to 14 teams with the return of these programs.

Part of the deal was [Charlie] Baker working with the Notre Dame football board, to finally formalize their agreement to join the ACC. The South Bend program had been independent, with it's own unique path to the college football playoff, but has been a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference for some time now in other sports. This move unites the program and gives the ACC a tremendous boon to their conference's prestige by bringing in such a strong program.

In a quieter move, the Connecticut Huskies move to the MAC conference, joining Massachusetts and Buffalo as the Northeast programs. UConn has struggled with it's football program in recent years and has been in between conference agreements. This gives them a home with regional opponents.

The details of these moves largely focused on the power conferences, but in agreements with the smaller programs and conferences, pathways for promotion and access to programs and funds are set to improve. The NCAA is not in favor of a full promotion or relegation system as has been touted, but there are talks to improve access for proven Mid-Major teams to join larger conferences.

These moves no doubt while controversial will have a substantial impact on a college football landscape that among the chaos that NIL had brought was also dealing with rapid realignment. The goal is to help stabilize the playing environment, improve parity, improve quality of life for the student athletes. Will it work in such a way? It's yet to be seen, but never has a reversion back to the status-quo been such a shake up as it is now in college sports.

          Florida Atlantic 2025 Season Preview

(Boca Raton, FL) - Expectations are mixed heading into the 2025 season, cautious optimism reigns after the Owls season ended blowout victory a year ago, but the team looks vastly different than the one led by Tom Herman and then interim head coach Chad Lunsford. Now at the reins is young coach Tyler Vail, a quarterback in his collegiate career turned head coach. It's only fitting that his FBS coaching debut comes against his alma mater when the Owls travel up to Maryland to take on the Terrapins. As the fall nears its time to look on the state of the roster and of this team that a year ago hung around the bottom of the American conference thanks to a five game losing streak that derailed their 2024 season. The goal this year is simply to be competitive. A .500 record seems to be the ceiling for this team, any return to the post season would be an immensely welcome change from the recent status quo that has settled upon Boca Raton.

It isn't the coach alone that will be doing this however, Tyler Veil's offensive scheme will be a spread offense that leans in favor of speed. A quarterback in his collegiate career it's no surprise he's interested in passing the ball more than running, but his running backs have been effective. The objective of his offense is to open up the field, catch and runs and outside runs are the name of the game.
          Quarterbacks

          Caden Veltkamp (JR-RS)
          Zach Gibson (SR-RS)
          Isaac Henley (FR)
          Kasen Weisman (SO-RS)
          Carson Cruver (SO-RS)

In a boon for this offense, Caden Veltkamp transfers to the Owls after a strong season a year ago with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Veltkamp passed for over 3000 yards and 25 touchdowns in leading the Hilltoppers to an 8-6 season a year ago that ended ironically in Boca Raton. While the Hilltoppers lost that game, they also lost their starting signal caller who opted to stay in Boca Raton and join the Owls. This is a big win, a veteran leader for this offense, he has plus arm strength and good accuracy. While Vail's quarterbacks generally are more mobile, Veltkamp will no doubt help open up this Owls passing attack. Backing him up will be senior Zach GIbson, a Georgia State transfer. Of those posting stats a year ago for the 90th ranked passing attack, Kasen Weisman and Carson Cruver return. Both combined totaled for less than 500 passing yards and figure to be depth pieces. Isaac Henley brings an interesting piece to the future of this position group, but will be taking a redshirt year this season unless injuries force him into action.
          Running Backs

          Gemari Sands (RS-SO)
          Xavier Terrell (RS-SO)
          Kaden Shields-Dutton (SO)
          Harold Burks (FR)
          Keshawn MCGee (FR)

          Jeremiah Perkins (SO) - FB

This running back group boasts solid talent that should help take some of the pressure off Veltkamp. Both [Gemari] and [Xavier] Terrell are elusive runners that fit well into Tyler Vail's scheme, and [Kaden] Shields-Dutton offers a good bruiser for short yardage situations. This group largely returns from a year ago, with Terrell and Sands rushing for about 300 yards in limited action. Expect a running back by committee approach here.
          Receivers

          Easton Messer (RS-JR)
          JR Wilson (SR)
          Jabari Smith (RS-SO)
          Dominique Henry (RS-JR)
          Jayshon Platt (RS-JR)
          Joseph Young (RS-JR)
          Asaad Waseem (RS-SO)
          Jade Card (FR)
          Jadrian Poindexter (FR)

          Tight Ends

          Kahlil Brantley (RS-SR)
          Gary Nelson (RS-JR)
          Justin Zimmerman (RS-FR)
          Shaun Mooney (SO)
          Martavious Collins (RS-FR)
          Jackson Lee (SR)

Familiarity is always a concern when bringing in a transfer portal quarterback, one way to alleviate that is to bring in one of his top targets from the past year to pair with him offensively and the Owls did just that in landing Easton Messer. Messer who finished just shy of 800 receiving yards was a reliable target for Veltkamp and should continue to be so in Boca Raton. Some scouts project Messer to be a NFL talent, currently grading in late rounds, but his play will no doubt bring a few scouts to the stands especially thanks to his smooth route running. Expect to hear his name called early and often. Kahlil Brantley also adds a good physical receiver that should see passes down the middle of the field in Vail's offense. Beyond that this position group is on the older side, with the majority leaning in their JR and SR years. While that'll be a strength this year, expect Vail to hit the recruiting trail hard to restock this cabinet. For this season the experience and depth should help elevate this offense.
          Offensive Line

          Tackles

          Paul Trent (SO)
          Daughtry Richardson (RS-JR)
          Vincent Forney (SO)
          Clyde Ellington (FR)
          Keon Rohe (RS-FR)
          Chandler Stewart (SO)
          Mauricio Hinds (RS-FR)
          Ja'Kavion Nonar (RS-JR)
          Carson OSmus (RS-FR)

          Guards

          Madden Sanker (RS-SO)
          Alex Atcavage (RS-SR)
          Vincent Fiacable (RS-JR)
          Ovie Dubre (RS-SO)
          Woody Jean (RS-SR)
          George Traylor (JR)
          Xavier Bryan (RS-FR)

          Centers

          Qae'shon Sapp (RS-SO)
          Braden Cunningham (RS-FR)
          Darnell Wolf (RS-JR)

This offensive line group is young and talented, there is a lot of room to grow here with good depth and most starters are coming into their sophomore or junior years. Daughtry Richardson and Qae'shon Sapp look to be the leaders of this offensive line, which should be near the upper half of the American conference. An offense needs to be strong in the trenches and this is a good group for Tyler Vail's first season at the helm.
          Defensive Line

          Edges
          Deshaun Batiste (RS-FR)
          Wilky Denaud (RS-SO)
          Eric Brantley Jr. (RS-SO)
          Gavench Marcelin (SO)
          Walt Barber (RS-SO)
          Dee Billingsley (RS-SR)
          Tyrell Thompson (RS-FR)
          Zac Watkins (RS-SO)
          Chenellson Exume (RS-FR)
          Tyclean Luman (RS-FR)
          Tycoolhill Luman (RS-FR)

          Defensive Tackles
          CJ Doggette (RS-JR)
          Naejuan Barber (RS-SR)
          Enyce Sledge (RS-JR)
          Bryce Langston (RS-SR)
          Kiemar Richardson (RS-SR)
          Nimari Brantley (FR)

A solid group headlines the defensive line. Expect creative rushes and stunts from edges Deshaun Batiste and Wilky Denaud. Adding to that will be a strong interior presence from CJ Dogette and senior Naejuan Barber. Batiste joins from Tulane. Denaud a former 4 star recruit recorded no sacks last season but is looking to establish himself in his first full season as starter. CJ Doggette joins from Ohio, where he recorded 3 stacks and displayed a good motor as a defensive anchor for the Bobcats.
          Linebackers

          SAM

          Jarvis Johnson (RS-FR)

          MIKE
          Tyler Stolsky (RS-JR)
          Zyere Horton (RS-JR)
          Hector Chavez (FR)

          WILL
          Leon Hart Jr (RS-SR)
          Char'quez Lee (RS-FR)
          Robert Lee (FR)

The middle of the defense is lacking on upside. Leon Hart joins the Owls after posting 12 tackles a season ago for the Marshall Thundering Herd. Tyler Stolsky joins from the Golden Gophers where he saw sporadic playing time. This group doesn't have much live game experience and it'll be very much learning on the go. It'll mark or break this defense depending if these linebackers are able to step up.
          Defensive Backs

          Cornerbacks

          Terez Reid (RS-SR)
          Derrick Rogers Jr. (RS-SO)
          Chris Tooley III (JR)
          Cameron Goggins (SO)
          Antonio Robinson Jr. (RS-SO)
          Shovon Jackson (SO)
          Lawrence Johnson (SO)

          Free Safeties

          Mike Wright III (SO)
          Kyle Boylston (RS-FR)

          Strong Safeties

          Wendol Philord (RS-SR)
          Tyler Shields (RS-SO)
          Dillon Williams (RS-JR)
          Tracy Bennett (FR)

The backend of the defense isn't much stronger than the middle, Terez Reid was a late add, after the senior cornerback from Grand Valley State opted to leave UTEP to join the Owls, though through early fall practices he looks to be the starter of this unit, looking to build upon the 3 interceptions he had a year ago. Derrick Rogers joins from Purdue, returning to his homestate after taking a redshirt year with the Boilermakers. He did see limited action in his true freshman year. Wendol Philord earned an extra year of eligibility and looks to build on a strong season ending performance against Tulsa after piling up 8 tackles and a sack in the Owls victory.
          Kicker
          Garrison Smith (RS-SR)

          Punter
          Logan Lupo (RS-SR)
          Cris Dukes (RS-FR)

Garrison Smith joins the Owls for his senior year after going 13-16 with the Akron Zips a year ago, including 4-6 from outside 40 yards. He adds a reliable option to this special teams unit. Logan Lupo earned recognition as a top 3 finalist as All-AAC punter. He has solid leg strength, while not regularly flipping the field, he still remains a boon for this team.

I'm looking forward to it! It's outside of the teams I typically use to start off dynasties, but they have a good stadium and great depth in the local recruiting pool. It should be a good rivalry with FIU.

Malik Washington displays poise in the pocket delivering a beautiful pass on a rainy afternoon

Maryland spoils Vail's homecoming in 48-28 rout led by Freshman Malik Washington on opening weekend

(College Park, MD) - In a glimpse of the past and future, the University of Maryland had two such occurrences on opening weekend. Head Coach of the Florida Atlantic Owls, Tyler Vail returned back to his alma matter in his coaching debut at the FBS level. Vail, a two year starter after transferring in from junior college finished his collegiate playing career as a Terrapin. The overcast soon turned to rain, a rain that went between light and heavy throughout the four quarters this afternoon. A fact that played into the Terrapins early reliance on a ground attack spearheaded by their dexterous freshman quarterback Malik Washington in his collegiate debut and Nolan Ray in the backfield.

The offense was able to carve it's way down field by virtue of explosive plays as the rain took an early toll, causing some Owl players to be caught out of position and the larger Terrapin offensive line able to win in the trenches of the rainy afternoon. The first drive culminated in an empty-back set, with Malik Washington ended up playing spoiler after noticing no receivers open and took the ball into the end zone untouched from a clean pocket. The size of the B1G was on display as the Terps benefitted from the elements in establishing an early 7-0 lead, though the lead wouldn't last long.

Ex-Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Caden Veltkamp (QB) and Easton Messer (WR) connected on an electric play action pass, a deep post that saw Messer fake out his cornerback and haul in the pass underneath the covering safety who ended up out of position to make a tackle after the reception. A long 66 yard pass from the Owls on the following drive after some slow early pair of first downs that relied on a ground game that unlike the Terrapins struggled to get much traction. A trend that would continue throughout the day, with Gemari Sands finishing with under a 3 YPC and under 50 yards rushing on the ground. Without a ground game the Owls had an even larger disadvantage thanks to the prevailing elements.

Despite these hiccups and a strong showing on the next drive by their offense, the Owls managed to get their first lead of the afternoon when on a second and goal, Veltkamp hooked up with Messer on a bubble screen right off the goal line for an easy touchdown to put the Owls ahead 14-7. The stadium grew quiet among the pour rain as the Owls had looked strong and resilient to start this game while the Terrapins had started to sputter after a great first drive, a potential upset seemed to be in the works.

This would however be the last time the Owls held the lead.

The silence only lasted one play, the first offensive play for the Terrapins on their next drive ignited the crowd again, a deep slant and without safety help it led to a 75 yard touchdown to knot the game at 14 a piece and from there the Terrapins wouldn't look back. The Terrapins would score the next 10 points of the game, giving them a good cushion that would briefly look tangible by the Owls after their two-minute drill offense scored on a quick strike after catching the Terrapins napping on a no-huddle pass from Veltkamp to Jabari Smith that would bring the game back within 3 to go into the half.

The issues for the Owls remained, their explosives were keeping them in the game but the early passing attack that looked strong started to struggle in the rain as receivers accounted for 4 drops going into the half and would double that number by the end of the game. With those woes inflicted on the passing game and an ineffectual ground game the Owls second half looked very unlike the second half.

The Terrapins on the opposite end leaned more on their ground game, both on the capable legs of their freshman signal caller [Malik] Washington and halfback Nolan Ray. After playing all 12 games a year ago for the Terps, the third year Sophomore exploded in this one with decisive runs. He hit the holes opened up by the offensive line fast and proved an elusive runner when the defense did get to him, proving to be a difficult back to bring down. He finished with 128 yards on the ground, averaging well over 9 yards per carry along with a pair of second half touchdown runs that would help seal the game for the Terrapins who came out playing a brutal ball control style offense in the second half and offered the Owls little opportunity to come back.

The Owls offense in the second half was highly ineffectual, adding to that was an injury to Veltkamp that saw the quarterback leave the game for two drives. Back up Zach Gibson wasn't able to spark the offense, throwing a third quarter interception that helped the Terrapins cruise out to an early lead. Veltkamp would return and lead the Owls to a late third quarter touchdown drive, throwing his fourth touchdown to bring the game back within 10 points, he would ultimately be pulled from the game late in the fourth quarter as a precaution. Nolan Ray scored his second touchdown early in the fourth to put the Terps back up by 17 and after two sputtering drives and only a few minutes left in the game the Owls weren't able to spark any magic. The game ending shortly after Zach Gibson threw his second interception of the afternoon on a hail mary attempt late.

With the loss, the Owls fall to 0-1 on the season while the Terrapins improved to 1-0 after their home opener. The Florida Atlantic Owls have a week off before their home opener against the Kent State Golden Flashes where they are favorites by 3.5 points against the MAC school. Maryland too will face a MAC foe, welcoming Northern Illinois in their second of a three game homestand to open the season before they open their B1G schedule on the road in Wisconsin.

Pretty tough to lose your starting QB who was playing pretty well and to have to roll with the backup. Hopefully the injury isn't to long. You had to figure a win over Maryland was going to be pretty tough

He'll be back next week! But the wear and tear had him pretty beat up, he wasn't getting sacked often but he was taking hits on several throws. It was a tough one for sure, the first half seemed good but the everything fell apart, not being able to run and the drops killed us. Once their offense got hot there wasn't keeping up and no possession game to hold them off the field at all. Definitely a positive though from the quarterback spot, it was a strong game against a solid team.

CJ Doggette pulls down Dru Deshields for a sack in the Owls home opening win over the Golden Flashes

Owls seal home opening win over the Golden Flashes, 30-17

(Boca Raton, FL) - In it's 2025 home opener, the Florida Atlantic Owls came out roaring, piling up 14 points in the first quarter wanting to make up for a tough showing against Maryland two weeks ago in front of their home crowd. In this one they faced the Kent State Golden Flashes, the MAC program is expected to finish near the bottom of their conference this season and served as a good step in the right direction for an Owls team looking to start moving back in the right direction after a difficult Tom Herman led tenure. They got off on the right foot with this one, as head coach Tyler Vail spoke to local news stating he wanted to get the offense going early and it proved to do just that as the Golden Flashes seemingly had no answers for the Owls offense.

Caden Veltkamp picked up right where he left off after leaving early against Maryland two weeks ago with a pair of first quarter touchdown passes. His first coming on a long touchdown drive and short completion on a slant in the red zone to tight end Kahlil Brantley. The strong tight end beating the corner for the ball for an early 7-0 lead. It would only be extended after a key third down sack on Kent State quarterback Dru Deshields pinned the Flashes back in their own zone deep giving them a bad position for a punt that quickly turned into good field position for the Owls. On a play action roll out. Caden Veltkamp found a streaking Jabari Smith for a long touchdown pass to extend the lead to 14-0. Smith has quickly been proving himself in the early parts of the season to be excellent at stretching the field and giving a reliable target to Veltkamp outside of Easton Messer.

The Golden Flashes offense was mostly listless in the first quarter, only getting a single first down and accounting for 17 yards of total offense, the Owls defense looking much improved, getting pressure on the signal caller and disrupting the running game early getting contact on the runner at or near the line of scrimmage to stop them from being able to move the chains or extend drives. The Flashes needed a play to get them sparked in this one otherwise the rout could be in as the Owls offense looked impressive in the early going. The Golden Flashes would get a bit of a spark when a blown assignment saw DaShawn Martin get behind the safeties with no help over the top. Despite a slightly underthrown ball, the defense couldn't catch up to the sophomore wideout who scored the Flashes first touchdown. Martin would account for two touchdowns on the day, and had a game high 163 receiving yards proving to be a thorn in the Owls side that kept the Flashes hanging around.

The spark wouldn't be long lived however as the game would move into halftime with a pair of Garrison Smith field goals of 38 and 46 yards to put the Owls up 20-7 heading into the half with momentum seemingly on their side. The offense wasn't looking as dynamic as the Flashes defense began to settle in and get some pressure on Caden Veltkamp forcing him to speed up his progressions and miss some of his reads. The Owls lead would look strong going into the fourth quarter after an uneventful third quarter saw only a Golden Flashes field goal bring the game within 10, which early in the fourth would be extended back out to 13 and a 23-10 lead for the Owls when Garrison Smith connected on his third field goal of the afternoon.

Then things started to turn for the Golden Flashes, another spark park that might've been just what they needed. Again none other than wide out DaShawn Martin who caught a slant and broke a tackle. An early season issue has been safety help over the top and it continued to manifest in the fourth as the backend was left wide open for the speedster wideout who after an initial broken tackle would go 72 yards for a touchdown and bring the game within a single score at 23-17. Things looked bleak for a moment as a quick three and out saw the Golden Flashes offense who once again hoped to get humming behind the spark they had gotten, but the Owls defense despite the big play issues proved resilient, after allowing a first down the Owls deense would tighten up and force a turn over on downs when they swatted a Dru DeShields pass intended for Da'Realyst Clark (Clark finishing with 2 receptions and 26 yards), giving the ball back to the Owls in positive territory and time on their side.

The ground game would be strong enough to close out this game. A week after looking helpless against the Terrapins, the Owls ground game looked better in this one, aided by this was a healthy mix of screens and motions that took pressure off the interior of the line which struggled immensely against the Terrapins. Gemari Sands would ice the game late in the fourth when he powered through the A gap between the left guard and center and powered through MIKE linebacker, Kevin Rich's tackle falling into the end zone and putting the game out of reach late, giving the Owls a 30-17 lead that would hold after a late hail mary would be batted out of bounds sealing the win for the Owls in the home opener.

It might not've been the first game, but Tyler Vail picks up his first FBS coaching victory in the Owls home opener over the Golden Flashes as the Owls improve to 1-1 on the season and turn forward to their annual rivalry game against the Florida International Panthers (1-1) next week. For the Golden Flashes, the loss is their first of the season and they fall to a 1-1 record on the season. Kent State will travel to Buffalo next week where they open up MAC conference play against the 1-1 Bulls.

In the post game conference, Tyler Vail was focused on the explosives on both ends. "Those kind of plays can make or break a game or season. When you're on the right side of one, like the early touchdown to [Jabari] Smith, those kinds of things can give your team fuel. On the flip side though, two consecutive weeks we gave up huge scoring plays to the opposition, this time it didn't lead to a loss but that won't always be the case. We need to tighten up the communication on the back end and make sure our safeties stay over top and give help like they're supposed to. Both plays were Cover 3's and they had deep zones but got caught up in crosses in the intermediate area. We won't stop working on that. Mental errors like that will cost us football games. Good team win today, but we have just as many things to build on today as we do positives. It's the first win in a long season."

Owls survive despite special teams miscues to claim 8th straight Shula Bowl, 21-13
(Miami, FL) - An irate looking Tyler Vail stood at the podium, looking like a defeated coach rather than one that had just won his first rivalry game as the coach of the Owls. It was understandable though where his frustrations stemmed from as mental miscues and errors nearly had this game slip away from the Owls. A lot of issues stemming from special teams where mistakes stacked. A botched snap causing a hurried missed field goal, along with two other misses from Senior kicker Garrison Smith kept the game within shooting distance of a Golden Panther squad looking to end a now eight year streak of defeats against their metropolitan rivals in the Florida Atlantic Owls.

The offense continued to show it's collective muscle, especially so on the ground as tailbacks Xavier Terrell (92 yards with 7.7 YPC) and Gemari Sands (75 yards with 4.4 YPC) as the run game continued to gain traction in the weeks that followed a disastrous opening weekend game against the Terrapins. It was the ground game that saw a lot of action in the most balanced play calling that Vail has done as head coach, with 33 passes and 29 rushes it was nearly a perfect split down the middle and with as much success as they were having it wasn't surprising. Adding to that was big plays, both halfbacks each notched a run of over 20 yards. That wasn't to say the aerial attack was anything to scoff at either. Caden Veltkamp in the early season is looking to be among the top quarterbacks in the American conference and he showed it again in this one as he added over 300 yards in the air on 66% completions along with a pair of touchdowns.

The main issues arose in the red zone where the offense sputtered. The ground game while excelling at stretching the field and churning the yards in the middle of the field couldn't get much going in the red zone, nor could the aerial attack causing several promising offensive drives stall in plus territory, adding to the problems was the disastrous day by senior kicker Garrison Smith who finished the day 0-3 on field goal attempts despite not attempting a field goal longer than 40 yards. It was enough that a strong offensive day was nearly undone thanks to the inability to finish drives with points on the board. A 9 point swing would've turned this one into a borderline rout, instead of a one possession nailbiter that went down to the final whistle.

The Panthers struck first late in the first quarter on a 43 yard field goal to put them up by 3. That lead would survive a drive by each time before the Owls would get a spark, when Caden Veltkamp caught a streaking Easton Messer for a huge 62 yard touchdown strike for the Owls to take the lead, one that would hold for the rest of the half as the Owls inability to score in plus territory cost them 6 points on a pair of good drives to end the half, sending the game into halftime as only a 7-3 score.

"The execution isn't there. We've got to finish when we get down there. Special Teams can win you the game or they can lose you the game, and right now it's cost us 6 points that we need. In any game all points matter, but this is a rivalry game. It means more. If we want that trophy at the end of the day we've got to earn it." Spoke Tyler Vail to the local press in the tunnel before going in to talk to the team.

The start of the the third quarter almost seemed to be an omen of sorts. The Panther's offense orchestrated it's best drive of the afternoon and moved the ball at will on an Owls defense that up to that point had held them to little offensively, culminating in a 28 yard touchdown pass on a broken coverage deep slant to C'Quan Jnopierre. What would've been a 13-10 game instead gave the lead back to the Panthers in a 7-10 contest. The lead change would be short lived however, the Owls would storm back thanks in large to Gemari Sands who would close out the game for the Owls with a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, that along with another Panther field goal would leave the score as 21-13 going into the final frame of a hotly contested rivalry game.

The Owls first offensive drive in the fourth quarter would get the ball down to the 11, where Garrison Smith would miss a kick from the right hash, a much needed score to extend the lead to two scores and deep in Panther territory. Instead the Panthers would get the ball back and Keyone Jenkins seemed to be heating up, but the Panthers would struggle to get the ball past midfield the rest of the game, their best drive just barely sneaking into Owls territory before the drive stalled. The Owls despite the special teams errors and red zone struggles would manage to hold on and win the game, improving their record to 2-1 while the Panthers fall to 1-2 and have now lost 8 straight Shula Bowl games against their rivals.

"Execution wasn't where we needed it to be. We were lucky to get out of there with a win today, that won't always happen and more often than not it's going to bite you. We performed in 3 quarters of the field, but just like the game itself, there's four quarters and if you don't execute in every phase, you won't win. We got away today, but that cannot be the norm." Spoke a frustrated Vail in the post game conference.
