Alright, Terp Nation, take a deep breath. Inhale the lingering scent of disappointing 4-8 seasons, then exhale all that negativity. Because a new era is dawning in College Park, and it's going to be… well, we're not entirely sure what it's going to be, but it certainly won't be boring!

After a rather forgettable run under Coach Locksley, the University of Maryland has decided to go in a bold new direction. Forget the seasoned veterans, the big names, the coaches with a proven track record. Nah, that's too conventional! Instead, we're handing the keys to the kingdom (or at least, the slightly rickety bus that is Maryland Football) to a man, a myth, a legend in his own mind: Coach Derick Baker!

Now, if you're frantically searching his Wikipedia page for collegiate coaching accolades, save yourself the trouble. There aren't any. Coach Baker is a true "Level 1" coach, a blank slate, a wild card. But don't let that fool you! The whispers from the underground football forums and back-alley chalk talks paint a picture of a man known simply as "The Mad Scientist." We're talking unconventional schemes, experimental play calls, and probably a whiteboard full of diagrams that look more like quantum physics equations than football formations. Will it work? Who knows! But it's going to be a ride, baby! Terrapin Tales: A Brief (and Sometimes Painful) History

Before we dive into the glorious unknown, let's acknowledge our roots. Maryland football has a history, folks! We're not some fly-by-night program. We've been slinging the pigskin for over a century, accumulating 11 conference championships and even a National Championship in 1953! Yes, 1953! Google it, kids. It was a simpler time, when leather helmets were still a fashion statement and the forward pass was considered a daring innovation.

We've seen legendary coaches and countless NFL talents don the red, black, and gold. From the glory days of Jim Tatum to the recent influx of drafted players like D.J. Moore, Darnell Savage, and Deonte Banks, Maryland has a proud (if sometimes frustratingly inconsistent) tradition. We've been in the ACC, and now we're battling it out in the Big Ten, which brings us to... The Battle Lines: Rivalries Old and New

Being in the Big Ten has certainly spiced things up, but we still cherish our historical rivalries. The border brawl with Virginia is always a fiery affair, steeped in decades of tradition. There's also the intense battles against Penn State that always get the blood boiling. And of course, the long-standing (though less frequent these days) grudge match with Navy. Get ready for some classic, hard-nosed football when these games roll around! The Current Concoction: Strengths and Weaknesses (and a whole lot of "Work In Progress")

So, what kind of ingredients is our Mad Scientist inheriting in this Terrapin football laboratory?

    Strengths (The Potentially Explosive Elements):
    • Talent Pipeline: Maryland has actually done a decent job of producing NFL talent recently, especially in the secondary and at wide receiver. There are some athletic freaks on this roster, individuals with raw ability just waiting to be unleashed.
    • Playmakers in the Skill Positions: We've got some guys who can make plays with the ball in their hands – wide receivers with deep speed and reliable hands, and running backs who can break tackles.
    • Defensive Backfield Potential: The Terps have consistently put defensive backs into the NFL, suggesting a foundation of talent and coaching in that area.

Weaknesses (The Volatile Chemicals That Could Blow Up in Our Face):
    • Consistency (or Lack Thereof): This has been the bane of Maryland football for years. Flashes of brilliance are often followed by head-scratching performances. Coach Baker's biggest challenge will be instilling a winning mentality and consistent execution.
    • Offensive Line: Protecting the quarterback and opening up running lanes has been a recurring issue. A mad scientist can draw up all the brilliant plays he wants, but if the O-line isn't holding up, it's all for naught. This is a major area of concern.
    • Depth: A 4-8 season doesn't leave you with a roster overflowing with five-star talent. We'll likely be relying on some younger players and will need to develop talent quickly.
    • Special Teams: Often overlooked, but crucial. Can our special teams provide a spark or will they be another source of frustration?
The Recruiting Blueprint: Mad Scientist's Shopping List

Coach Baker, with his "Level 1" coaching status, is going to have to be a master recruiter. His "mad scientist" persona might be a double-edged sword – intriguing to some, terrifying to others. Here's what we're thinking for recruiting goals:
    • "Lab Rats" (High-Potential, Under-the-Radar Recruits): We need to find diamonds in the rough. Coach Baker's experimental approach might appeal to players who aren't cookie-cutter prospects but have unique skills that he can exploit. Think athletes with weird measurables, position-less players, or guys who just "don't fit the mold."
    • "Big Ten Beasts" (Offensive and Defensive Linemen): This is paramount. We absolutely HAVE to improve in the trenches to compete in the Big Ten. Big, strong, mauling linemen are a top priority.
    • "Hybrid Hounds" (Versatile Defenders): Given the "mad scientist" moniker, imagine defensive players who can play multiple roles – a safety who can blitz, a linebacker who can cover slot receivers, a defensive end who can drop into coverage. Versatility will be key to his exotic schemes.
    • Local Talent (DMV Pipeline): The DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) is a hotbed of high school football talent. Locking down the best players in our backyard is crucial for building a sustainable program and fueling local excitement.

So, there you have it, folks! The stage is set for what promises to be one of the most unpredictable, exciting, and possibly chaotic online dynasty franchises in College Football 26 history. Will Coach Derick Baker lead the Maryland Terrapins to glory, or will his experiments result in a glorious explosion of epic failure? Only time, and many, many hours of intense gameplay, will tell.

Tune in next time to see if the Mad Scientist's first batch of recruits blows up in his face, or if he's brewing up a championship concoction!

      Head Coach: Derick Baker

      Offensive Scheme: Spread Offense

      Defensive Scheme: Base 3-4 Defense

      Current School Ranking: 3-Star

Recruiting Strategy: Focus on 4-star talent and below. Prioritize recruits interested in the program or local talent. Avoid players with significant deal-breakers. Team Needs:
      • QB: 1 (Dual Threat preferred for Spread Offense)
      • WR: 2 (Variety of skill sets, e.g., Route Artist, Gadget)
      • Tackle: 1 (Emphasis on protecting the QB)
      • Guard: 2 (Strong interior linemen for run blocking and pass protection)
      • Center: 1 (Crucial for offensive line communication and snaps)
      • OLB: 2 (Lurkers for 3-4 defense - pass rush and coverage ability)
      • Mike LB: 1 (Lurker for 3-4 defense - run stopping and leadership)
      • FS: 1 (Coverage Specialist for backfield support)
      • SS: 2 (Versatile - Coverage Specialist and Box Specialist needed)

      Recruiting Board Analysis:

      Quarterback (Need: 1)
      • Jared Leeuwenburg (3-star, Dual Threat QB): Aligns perfectly with the spread offense. As a 3-star, he's within the target ranking. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.

      Wide Receiver (Need: 2)
      • Jackson Durant (4-star, Route Artist WR): Excellent talent within the 4-star limit. A route artist is a valuable asset for a spread offense. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Rico Knight (4-star, Gadget WR): Another 4-star talent. A gadget player offers versatility and playmaking ability, which fits the spread offense. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Keilan Countess (3-star, Elusive Route Runner): While a 3-star, his "elusive route runner" trait is a strong positive for the spread. Could be a good secondary target if higher-rated options don't pan out or as depth. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.

Offensive Line (Need: 1 Tackle, 2 Guards, 1 Center)
      • Salesi Bean (4-star, Raw Strength RG): Good 4-star talent for Guard. "Raw Strength" indicates potential for a dominant run blocker. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Agile RG Kevin Toone (3-star): A 3-star guard. "Agile" is a good trait for the spread offense's zone blocking schemes. Could be a solid pickup for depth or a starting role. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Raw Strength RT Stephon Cooke (2-star): Falls below the 3-star minimum for the school. While "Raw Strength" is good, Coach Baker's rule is to only go after 3-star talent and above. ACTION: DISCARD - DOES NOT MEET CRITERIA.
      • Raw Strength RT Jared Lemonier (3-star): A 3-star tackle, meeting the minimum rating. "Raw Strength" is good for a tackle. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Agile RG Robert Huffman (4-star): Another 4-star guard, excellent talent. "Agile" trait is beneficial. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Agile RG Ezekiel Barnes (3-star): A 3-star agile guard. Good depth or potential starter. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Pass Protector C Harlan Mondeaux (4-star): A highly-rated 4-star center. "Pass Protector" is crucial for a spread offense that often involves more passing plays. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Pass Protector LT Keke Ogbah (3-star): A 3-star left tackle. "Pass Protector" is vital for protecting the QB's blind side. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.

Linebacker (Need: 2 OLB, 1 Mike LB)
      • Lurker Will LB Colin Albrecht (3-star): A 3-star outside linebacker with the "Lurker" trait, indicating good coverage or blitzing ability for the 3-4 defense. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Lurker SAM LB Marvin Johns (4-star): A 4-star outside linebacker with the "Lurker" trait. Strong talent for the 3-4. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Lurker MIKE LB Jaylen Lemon (4-star): A 4-star middle linebacker with the "Lurker" trait. A top target to fill the Mike LB need. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Lurker MIKE LB Cole Avery (3-star): A 3-star middle linebacker. Could be a good addition for depth or competition. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.

Safety (Need: 1 FS, 2 SS)
      • Coverage Specialist FS Demarcco Eze (4-star): A 4-star free safety, specializing in coverage. Ideal for the deep middle of the field. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Box Specialist SS Sam Lord (4-star): A 4-star strong safety with a "Box Specialist" trait. Excellent for run support and short-zone coverage. ACTION: HIGH PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.
      • Coverage Specialist SS Cooper Odrick (2-star): Falls below the 3-star minimum for the school. ACTION: DISCARD - DOES NOT MEET CRITERIA.
      • Coverage Specialist SS Doug Madden (3-star): A 3-star strong safety with a "Coverage Specialist" trait. Fills one of the strong safety needs. ACTION: MEDIUM PRIORITY - EVALUATE INTEREST/LOCAL TIES.

      Prioritized Recruiting Action Plan:

Immediate Contact (Top Priority - Must ascertain interest/local ties):
      • QB: Jared Leeuwenburg (3-star, Dual Threat)
      • WR: Jackson Durant (4-star, Route Artist)
      • WR: Rico Knight (4-star, Gadget)
      • RG: Salesi Bean (4-star, Raw Strength)
      • RG: Robert Huffman (4-star, Agile)
      • C: Harlan Mondeaux (4-star, Pass Protector)
      • LT: Keke Ogbah (3-star, Pass Protector)
      • SAM LB: Marvin Johns (4-star, Lurker)
      • MIKE LB: Jaylen Lemon (4-star, Lurker)
      • FS: Demarcco Eze (4-star, Coverage Specialist)
      • SS: Sam Lord (4-star, Box Specialist)

Secondary Targets (Evaluate after initial contact with top priorities):
      • WR: Keilan Countess (3-star, Elusive Route Runner)
      • RG: Kevin Toone (3-star, Agile)
      • RT: Jared Lemonier (3-star, Raw Strength)
      • RG: Ezekiel Barnes (3-star, Agile)
      • Will LB: Colin Albrecht (3-star, Lurker)
      • MIKE LB: Cole Avery (3-star, Lurker)
      • SS: Doug Madden (3-star, Coverage Specialist)

      Discarded Prospects (Do Not Recruit):
      • RT: Stephon Cooke (2-star) - Below rating threshold.
      • SS: Cooper Odrick (2-star) - Below rating threshold.

      Key Considerations for Coach Baker:
      • Player Interest: Ascertaining genuine interest in the Maryland program is paramount to maximize recruiting hours.
      • Local Talent: Prioritize recruits from Maryland and the surrounding DMV area if their talent and interest align.
      • Deal Breakers: Conduct thorough background checks to identify any potential deal-breakers early in the process.
      • Scheme Fit: All prioritized targets align well with the spread offense and 3-4 defense, but re-confirm their understanding and excitement for the schemes during initial conversations.

This focused approach allows Coach Baker to efficiently target the most impactful recruits who fit his program's needs and philosophy.

Week 1 brought both early challenges on the recruiting trail and a nail-biting season opener that showcased the Terrapins' resilience. Early Recruiting Hurdles

The week started with a dose of reality for Coach Baker and his staff as four key recruiting prospects, initially high on Maryland's radar, locked out the Terps from their top 8 choices. This early setback means the coaching staff will need to pivot and re-evaluate their strategy for these promising talents:
        • RG Salesi Bean (4-star)
        • RG Kevin Toone (3-star)
        • LT Keke Ogbah (3-star)
        • SS Doug Madden (3-star)

Despite these early snags, the "Mad Scientist" is known for his adaptability, and it will be intriguing to see how he adjusts his recruiting board in the coming weeks. Season Opener Thriller: Maryland vs. Florida Atlantic

A last-minute decision by Coach Baker to start redshirt junior QB Justyn Martin over freshman phenom Malik Washington proved to be a pivotal choice.

        • Receivers: Dominique Henry led with 5 receptions for 49 yards, Jabari Smith added 6 receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown, and Joseph Young had a crucial 34-yard touchdown reception.
        • Defense: FAU's defense was disruptive, tallying 9 tackles for loss, 1 interception (FS Kyle Boylston), and 1 sack (REDG Dee Billingsley).

Maryland Highlights: The Terrapins, under Martin's leadership, showed flashes of offensive potential and a stout defensive effort:
        • Justyn Martin (QB): 290 passing yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception, 1 sack, 64% completion (25-39), 129.8 rating. Martin's decision-making and arm talent were on display in his first start.
        • Nolan Ray (HB): Led the ground attack with 15 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown, providing a crucial spark.
        • Zymear Smith (HB): Contributed 7 carries for 36 yards and added 46 receiving yards, showcasing his versatility.
        • Receivers: Dorian Fleming was a standout, hauling in 5 receptions for 101 yards. Octavian Smith, Jr. added 4 receptions for 47 yards, and Josiah McLaurin secured 2 receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown.
        • Defense: The Terrapins' defense was a force, recording 10 tackles for loss, 1 sack (REDG Joshua Burgess), 1 interception (FS Lavain Scruggs), and a momentum-swinging safety by MIKE LB Daniel Wingate, which ultimately proved to be the difference.
A Gritty Victory for the Mad Scientist

In the end, it was a hard-fought 15-14 victory for Maryland, a testament to Coach Baker's game management and the team's ability to perform under pressure. The defense's crucial plays, including the safety, were instrumental in securing the win. While the recruiting trail presents immediate challenges, the Terps have started the "Mad Scientist" era with a victory, building crucial momentum for the weeks to come.

Terps Tame Monarchs in Hard-Fought Victory

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The "Mad Scientist" Derick Baker, in his inaugural season as Head Coach of the University of Maryland Terrapins, continued to mold his program in Week 2, securing a gritty 27-16 victory over the Old Dominion Monarchs. Coming off a nail-biting one-point win against Florida Atlantic, Coach Baker's squad showed resilience and adaptability, moving to a perfect 2-0 on the young season.

Saturday, September 13, 2025, saw the Terps host Old Dominion, with much of the pre-game chatter centered around the Monarchs' speedy running back, Devin Roche. However, it was Maryland's defense that ultimately stole the show, stifling the Old Dominion attack and paving the way for a second-half surge.

Game Flow: A Tale of Two Halves

The first half was a defensive struggle, with both teams trading blows and field goals. Maryland's Gavin Marshall opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal, but Old Dominion quickly responded with a 42-yarder from Riley Callaghan. The Monarchs then seized momentum early in the second quarter when Bostros returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown, giving ODU a surprising 10-3 lead. Callaghan added another field goal, pushing the lead to 13-3.

Just before halftime, the Terps found a spark. QB Justyn Martin connected with tight end Dorian Fleming for a 17-yard touchdown reception, narrowing the gap to 13-10. However, Old Dominion managed to sneak in another field goal as time expired, making it 16-10 at the break.

The second half belonged to the Terrapins. After a scoreless third quarter, Maryland's offense finally broke through. Running back Nolan Ray punched in a 9-yard touchdown run late in the third, giving the Terps their first lead since early in the game, 17-16. The momentum continued into the fourth quarter as Martin found Zymear Smith for a 20-yard touchdown reception, extending Maryland's lead. Gavin Marshall then sealed the deal with a 24-yard field goal, securing the 27-16 victory.

          Terrapin Offensive Standouts

Quarterback Justyn Martin had a stellar performance, showcasing his accuracy and arm talent. He finished with an impressive 375 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, and a 75% completion rate (32-42), earning a strong 162.1 passer rating. His ability to navigate the pocket and deliver precise throws was crucial in the second-half comeback.

The ground game, while not heavily relied upon, was efficient. Nolan Ray led the way with 74 yards on 8 carries, including a key 9-yard touchdown run. He also proved valuable in the passing game with 5 receptions for 69 yards. Zymear Smith contributed 7 rushing yards and added a receiving touchdown on 5 catches for 58 yards.

The star of the receiving corps was undoubtedly tight end Dorian Fleming, who was a constant threat, hauling in 11 receptions for 124 yards and a touchdown. Wide receivers Jalil Farooq (4 rec, 75 yds) and Kaleb Webb (4 rec, 31 yds) also made important contributions.

          Dominant Defensive Display

Maryland's defense was the true hero of the day, particularly their pass rush. They relentlessly pressured Old Dominion QB Colton Joseph, sacking him a staggering 8 times. The defensive line wreaked havoc, with LEDG Neeo Avery leading the charge with an incredible 4 sacks, and REDG Joshua Simmons adding 2 more. Linebackers Daniel Wingate, Michael Harris, and Trey Riddick each chipped in with a sack.

The Terps' defense also racked up 18 tackles for loss (TFL), consistently disrupting Old Dominion's offensive rhythm. Safety Jalen Huskey secured the lone interception for the Terps, further highlighting their ball-hawking ability. While they allowed an early pick-six, the defense tightened up significantly, preventing Devin Roche from breaking out and holding the Monarchs scoreless in the entire second half.

          Old Dominion's Struggles

Old Dominion's offense struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Colton Joseph completed 11 of 17 passes for 143 yards but failed to throw a touchdown and was intercepted once, in addition to being sacked 8 times. Their star running back, Devin Roche, was largely contained, managing 75 yards on 16 carries and only 5 receiving yards. Wide receivers Sidney Mbanasor (3 rec, 54 yds), Ja'Cory Thomas (2 rec, 41 yds), and Jalen Butler (3 rec, 23 yds) had limited impact.

The Monarchs' defense started strong, registering 16 TFLs, an interception returned for a touchdown, a sack, and a forced fumble, but they couldn't maintain the pressure against Maryland's persistent offense in the second half.

          Looking Ahead

Coach Baker's "Mad Scientist" approach seems to be yielding results. The Terps' ability to adjust at halftime and dominate the second half speaks volumes about the team's coaching and leadership. With a 2-0 record and a strong defensive identity emerging, Maryland will look to carry this momentum into Week 3 as they continue their 2025 campaign.

"The Mad Scientist" Shifts Maryland's Defense and Secures a Big Ten Opener Win

College Park, MD – Week 3 under first-year Head Coach Derick Baker, affectionately known as "The Mad Scientist," proved to be a pivotal one for the Maryland Terrapins. The week kicked off with a bold strategic move, a hallmark of Coach Baker's unconventional approach, as he mandated a switch to a defensive 3-3-5 Tite scheme. This tactical adjustment, aimed at better leveraging the current defensive roster's strengths, immediately resonated with the fanbase, who thoroughly enjoyed the renewed energy and aggression displayed by the defense.

The shift, however, has raised questions among the Terp faithful regarding its long-term implications for recruiting, particularly how it might alter the pursuit of future defensive talent. Furthermore, whispers abound about the future of Defensive Coordinator Jayson Perry, a traditional 3-4 base guy, and how he will adapt to this radical philosophical change. For now, the focus remains on the field, where the early returns on Baker's defensive vision have been overwhelmingly positive.

Amidst the strategic overhaul, Coach Baker also made a definitive statement at the quarterback position, officially naming Justyn Martin as the starting signal-caller. Freshman phenom Malik Washington, while undoubtedly a talent for the future, was advised to sit back, learn, and be patient, signaling a clear succession plan for the Terps' offense.

            Big Ten Opener Thriller

The week culminated in a high-stakes showdown on Saturday, September 20, 2025, as the undefeated Terrapins traveled to Madison for their first away game and their crucial Big Ten opener against the Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin entered the game with a 2-1 record, setting the stage for a true test of Coach Baker's early tenure.

Wisconsin's offense, led by QB Billy Edwards Jr., struggled to find rhythm against Maryland's revamped defense. Edwards finished with 194 passing yards, but was hampered by -7 rushing yards, a single touchdown, an interception, and a sack. His 21-of-29 (72%) completion rate yielded a modest 121.7 rating. Running back Darrion Dupree was largely contained, managing only 12 yards on 16 carries, though he did add 46 yards on 7 receptions. Receivers Vinny Anthony II (65 yards), Dekel Crowdus (50 yards), and Lance Mason (27 yards) made some catches, but big plays were scarce. The Badgers' defense recorded 5 TFLs but failed to register a sack or an interception.

For Maryland, Justyn Martin's third start as QB1 was a steady performance, solidifying his position and easing any week-to-week concerns at the quarterback spot. He threw for 194 yards on 25-of-38 attempts (65% completion) for a 108.6 rating, notably avoiding any turnovers or sacks. The ground game saw Nolan Ray shine, rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries, while also contributing 21 receiving yards on 8 catches. Zymear Smith added 7 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards. In the receiving corps, Dorian Fleming led the way with 5 receptions for 58 yards, supported by Octavian Smith, Jr. (14 yards) and Kaleb Webb (37 yards).

The true stars of the game, however, were the Maryland defense. They were relentless, racking up an astounding 15 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. The pressure came from all angles, with MIKE Daniel Wingate leading the charge with 2 sacks, DT Noah Carrington adding 1.5, LEDG Tarik Stanley contributing 1, and SS Messiah Delhomme chipping in with 0.5. The defense's crowning moment came with a crucial interception by SS Messiah Delhomme.

            Scoring Summary:

            • 4th Quarter (0:18): With time winding down, Maryland showed resilience. Jarren Humphrey punched in a 2-yard touchdown run. However, a missed extra point kept the score tight, leaving the Terps down by a point.

Coach Baker's Terrapins secured a hard-fought victory in their Big Ten opener, moving to 3-0 on the season. The defensive transformation is already paying dividends, and the team's ability to close out a tough road game against a conference rival speaks volumes about the new culture being instilled in College Park. The "Mad Scientist" is certainly making his mark.

"The Mad Scientist" Derick Baker's Terps Face First Loss in Austin After Clash of Undefeateds

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Week 4 proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions for the University of Maryland Terrapins and their first-year Head Coach Derick Baker, affectionately known as "The Mad Scientist." After an improbable upset victory over Wisconsin last week, the Terps saw continued momentum off the field, but ultimately faced a harsh dose of reality on it.

The week began on a high note for Coach Baker, as his program secured its first verbal commitment under his tenure. MIKE LB Cole Avery out of Bethesda, MD, a highly-touted three-star recruit, chose to commit to the Terps. This pivotal moment signifies a growing belief in "The Mad Scientist's" vision and the trajectory of the Maryland football program, especially keeping local talent home.

However, the main event of the week loomed large: an undefeated 3-0 Maryland squad venturing into Austin to challenge the formidable #1 ranked and also undefeated 3-0 Texas Longhorns. The stage was set for a monumental showdown, featuring Texas's five-star quarterback Arch Manning and one of the nation's premier secondaries.

              Saturday, September 27, 2025 – Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (Austin, TX)

The Terps fought valiantly, showcasing flashes of the aggressive, innovative style Coach Baker has instilled. Their defense, a bright spot through the early season, brought significant pressure, racking up an impressive 16 tackles for loss and 4 sacks. Defensive standouts included Daniel Wingate (2 sacks), DT Bryce Jenkins (1 sack), LEDG Tarik Stanley (2 sacks), and SAM Trey Reddick (.5 sack), along with DT Noah Carrington (.5 sack).

However, the sheer talent and execution of the #1 Texas Longhorns proved too much to overcome, resulting in a 35-14 defeat for Maryland.

              Game Breakdown:

Texas QB Arch Manning lived up to his prodigious billing, delivering a dazzling performance with 331 passing yards, 18 rushing yards, 2 passing touchdowns, and 2 rushing touchdowns. His remarkable efficiency, completing 24 of 28 passes (85% completion) for a 208.5 rating, kept the Terps' defense on their heels. Manning connected with his star receivers, with Ryan Wingo hauling in 5 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, and Deandre Moore Jr. adding 5 receptions for 104 yards and a score, including an 81-yard bomb to open the scoring.

Maryland's offense, led by QB Justyn Martin, showed glimpses of potential with 207 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, but also threw a crucial interception. Running backs Jarren Humphrey (7 carries, 31 yards) and Zymear Smith (7 carries, 48 yards, 6 receptions for 49 yards) contributed, but the ground game struggled to establish consistent dominance. Tight end Dorian Fleming was a reliable target, snagging 7 catches for 87 yards, while wide receivers Shaleak Knotts (2 receptions, 15 yards) and Kaleb Webb (4 receptions, 52 yards) also made contributions.

              Scoring Summary:

The Longhorns asserted their dominance early, with Deandre Moore Jr.'s 81-yard touchdown reception from Manning and a Mason Shipley 17-yard field goal putting them up 10-0 in the first quarter. Maryland found some life in the second with Josiah McLaurin's 18-yard touchdown catch from Justyn Martin, but Manning's 4-yard run extended Texas's lead before halftime.

Maryland responded in the third quarter with Ryan Manning's 13-yard touchdown reception from Justyn Martin, closing the gap. However, the fourth quarter belonged to Texas. Arch Manning's 15-yard rushing touchdown and another Mason Shipley field goal created a comfortable lead. The exclamation point came with just 17 seconds left, as Ryan Wingo connected with Manning for an 87-yard touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion to finalize the score at 35-14.

              Looking Ahead:

While the loss stings, Coach Baker and the Terrapins have much to learn from this encounter against the nation's top team. The experience gained playing against an elite opponent like Texas, particularly a talent like Arch Manning, will be invaluable for the young Maryland squad. "The Mad Scientist" now faces the challenge of regrouping his team and preparing them for the next battle, eager to apply the lessons learned from their first taste of defeat. The true test of a mad scientist's genius isn't in avoiding failure, but in how quickly they adapt and innovate after it.

Coach Baker's Recruiting Woes Continue, Terps Secure Crucial Conference Win

College Park, MD - Week 5 proved to be a mixed bag for first-year Head Coach Derick Baker, "The Mad Scientist," and his University of Maryland Terrapins. While the team secured a vital conference victory, the recruiting trail continues to present challenges for the UMD program. Recruiting Update: A Shrinking Board and Growing Concerns

The week began with more disappointing news on the recruiting front, as Coach Baker was reportedly locked out of two more prospects: a 4-star offensive guard and a 3-star offensive tackle. This brings the total number of missed recruits to a concerning level for the young coach.

Adding to the frustration, 3-star offensive guard Ezekiel Baker reportedly informed Coach Baker that he was not a fan of UMD's playing style, further narrowing the pool of potential commits. With these setbacks, Coach Baker is now actively recruiting only 12 players, a number that will undoubtedly need to be expanded significantly in the coming weeks to address the team's future needs. Game Day: Terps Bounce Back Against Washington

After a demoralizing loss to Texas, the Maryland Terrapins returned home to face a formidable Washington Huskies squad in their second conference matchup of the season. Both teams entered the contest with identical 3-1 overall records and unblemished 1-0 conference marks, making this a pivotal game for early conference positioning. Maryland and Washington were ranked 4th and 5th, respectively, in the conference standings.

Coach Baker's game plan focused heavily on containing Washington's star wide receiver, Rashid Williams, a strategy that largely paid dividends throughout the afternoon. Notably, 4-star SAM linebacker recruit Marvin Johns was in attendance for the game, witnessing the Terps' impressive performance firsthand. Saturday, October 4, 2025 - Maryland vs. Washington

The Terrapins showcased resilience, especially on defense and special teams, to secure a crucial victory. While the offense had its struggles, the emergence of Malik Washington at quarterback in the second half provided a spark, and Octavian Smith Jr.'s electrifying punt return for a touchdown proved to be a game-changer. The defense, led by a strong pass rush, made key plays, including Daniel Wingate's fumble return for a touchdown.

Coach Baker will now turn his attention to building on this conference win while simultaneously addressing the pressing needs on his recruiting board. The presence of Marvin Johns at the game certainly adds an interesting dynamic to the ongoing recruiting efforts.

"The Mad Scientist" Derick Baker and Maryland Terrapins Face Setback

College Park, MD - Week 7 proved to be a mixed bag for first-year Head Coach Derick Baker, affectionately known as "The Mad Scientist," and his Maryland Terrapins. While significant strides were made on the recruiting trail, the Terps suffered a hard-fought home loss to Nebraska, dropping their record to 4-2 (3rd in conference). Recruiting Momentum Builds

The week started with a bang for Coach Baker, as the Terrapins secured three crucial verbal commitments. Three-star QB Jared Leeuwenburg pledged his allegiance, giving Baker a promising signal-caller for the future. Joining him were two impactful linebackers: three-star Colin Albrecht (WILL LB) and highly-touted four-star Marvin Jones (SAM LB). These commitments are a testament to Baker's aggressive recruiting approach, particularly after missing out on some earlier targets.

Showing his adaptability and focus on "quality over quantity," Coach Baker immediately shifted his attention to key needs, actively pursuing JUCO offensive linemen Al Degeare (2-star RT) and Maurice Jewel (2-star LG). With these additions, Baker is now actively recruiting 12 players, demonstrating his commitment to addressing specific positional gaps.

The excitement carried into game day, as the Terps hosted a trio of high-profile recruits for official visits: four-star WR Jackson Durant, two-star RT Stephon Cooke, and four-star C Harlan Mondeaux. The coaching staff will be hoping the electric atmosphere and competitive game left a lasting impression on these potential future Terrapins. Heartbreak at Home: Nebraska Edges Maryland 17-14

Saturday, October 11, 2025, saw a tense battle unfold at home against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Coach Baker's game plan centered on stopping Nebraska's highly touted running back Emmett Johnson. While the Terrapins' defense largely succeeded in this regard, holding Johnson to a mere 21 yards on 14 carries, Nebraska's passing game proved to be the difference-maker.

Nebraska's QB Dylan Raiola had a stellar performance, completing 17 of 20 passes for 312 yards and two touchdowns, boasting an impressive 249.0 rating. He spread the ball effectively, finding TE Jeinrich Haarberg for a massive 136 yards on 6 receptions, and WR Dane Key for 72 yards and a crucial 49-yard touchdown.

Maryland's offense, led by QB Justyn Martin, put up a valiant effort. Martin threw for 281 yards and a touchdown, completing 27 of 39 passes. TE Dorian Fleming was a dominant force, hauling in 13 receptions for 149 yards and a touchdown. Running backs Nolan Ray (47 rushing yards, 41 receiving yards) and Zymear Smith (1 rushing yard, 9 receiving yards) contributed, but the ground game struggled to establish consistent momentum.

The scoring summary painted a picture of a back-and-forth affair:

                  1st Quarter:
                  • (NEB) Nyziah Hunter 20 yd pass from Dylan Raiola (Kyle Cunanan kick), 0:41

                  2nd Quarter:
                  • (NEB) Dane Key 49yd pass from Dylan Raiola (Kyle Cunanan kick), 2:02
                  • (TERPS) Dorian Fleming 34yd pass from Justyn Martin (Gavin Marshall kick), 1:23

                  4th Quarter:
                  • (TERPS) Jarren Humphrey, 5 yd run (Gavin Marshall kick), 4:50
                  • (NEB) Kyle Cunanan, 21 yd fg, 0:59

Maryland's defense showed flashes of brilliance, racking up 12 tackles for loss and a sack from DT Noah Carrington. However, the lack of turnovers (0 interceptions) proved costly against Raiola's efficient passing.

Ultimately, a late 21-yard field goal by Nebraska's Kyle Cunanan sealed the Terrapins' fate, resulting in a heartbreaking 17-14 loss. While the outcome was disappointing, Coach Baker and his staff will undoubtedly analyze the film, learn from their mistakes, and continue to build upon the foundation they've laid in College Park. The focus now shifts to bouncing back and preparing for Week 8.

                    #10

Week 8 proved to be a whirlwind for first-year Head Coach Derick Baker, "The Mad Scientist," as his University of Maryland Terrapins navigated recruiting wins and losses, culminating in a challenging road game.

Recruiting Rollercoaster: The week kicked off on a high note with two new verbal commitments for Coach Baker's program. The Terps secured 2-star SS Cooper Odrick and 2-star RT Stephon Cooke, the latter having been in attendance at last week's game against Nebraska. In response to recent struggles in the kicking game, Baker strategically added 3-star K George Pinto to his recruiting board, bringing his active recruitment list to 11 players. However, the recruiting trail also brought disappointment, as 4-star WR Jackson Durant, another recruit who visited last week, opted to commit elsewhere.

West Coast Showdown: With a 4-2 record, Coach Baker and the Terps embarked on a cross-country trip to face the 3-3 UCLA Bruins at their home turf. The Terrapins knew they faced a formidable challenge in stopping UCLA's "three-headed monster" offense, led by QB Nico Iamaleava, HB Jaivian Thomas, and WR Kaedin Robinson.

1st Quarter: Maryland struck first with a 5-yard touchdown pass from QB Justyn Martin to Kaleb Webb, putting the Terps up 7-0 after Gavin Marshall's kick.

2nd Quarter: UCLA responded with a 43-yard field goal by Mateen Bhaghani. Maryland extended their lead when Justyn Martin connected with Jarren Humphrey for a 12-yard touchdown pass. However, UCLA's Bhaghani closed out the half with a 48-yard field goal, narrowing Maryland's lead.

3rd Quarter: Bhaghani continued his strong kicking performance, adding a 31-yard field goal for UCLA, bringing the Bruins closer.

In a dramatic finish, UCLA's Nico Iamaleava threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Rico Flores Jr., followed by a successful two-point conversion by Anthony Woods. The game concluded with Benjamin Perry returning an interception 24 yards for a UCLA touchdown as time expired.

                    Final Score: UCLA 30 - Maryland 21
