    WEEK 13
Appalachian State 34, Florida Atlantic 14

Armanti Edwards got it done on the ground once again with 2 TDs

    Sun Belt Champs!

BOONE NC -- Another day, another Gatorade bath for coach travis a.d..

Not to worry, because he was already pretty wet thanks to the rainy conditions in south Florida, but the afformentioned bath was still completely necessary. With a 34-14 slaughtering of Florida Atlantic, the Mountaineers clinched the 2009 Sun Belt championship in their first season in the conference.

"What a great couple of weeks. First we clinch a bowl berth and now this. Never in a million years would I have thought our first year in FBS would turn out this way".

Appalachian couldn't get anything going through the air, but they didn't really need to. Impact players Devon Moore and Armanti Edwards combined for 222 yards rushing and 4 TDs. Edwards did throw two interceptions, but the defense kept FAU from scoring in the second half to make up for the turnovers.

The Owls got off to a hot start, taking a 7-0 lead in the first minute of the game. The Mountaineers tied it up on the ensuing drive however, thanks to a 6-yard TD scamper from Devon Moore. Appalachian would never look back, en route to their 6th win in the last 7 games.

The regular season wraps up when the Mountaineers take on Arkansas State next week in Boone. The Red Wolves look to earn their 6th win of the year and become eligible for a bowl game.

    PLAYERS OF THE GAME

    Appalachian - Armanti Edwards, 11-26, 116 yards, 109 rush yards, 2 TD
Florida Atlantic - Rod Huggins, 12 tackles, 2 INT

        WEEK 14
Arkansas State 38, Appalachian State 35

        Pulling My Hair Out
Face mask penalties, dropped passes galore help Arkansas State take finale

Reggie Arnold embarrassed Appalachian State's defense with 4 rushing TDs

BOONE, NC -- Appalachian State dropped a heartbreaker at home to Arkansas State thanks to a good ol' fashioned heaping helping of EA football B.S.

Armanti Edwards was able to complete just 14 of 35 passes (that's 33%, folks) thanks to more dropped passes by wide open receivers than you can shake a stick at.

"This was truely one of those games the CPU just would not let you win", said a noticeably flustered travis a.d. after the game, "Not only that, but all of a sudden none of our defenders seemed to be capable of completing a tackle. The big breaks Arkansas State got in this game were ridiculous to say the least".

The Mountaineers were still able to keep it close, thanks to a late interception in the red zone by CB Cortez Gilbert. Then on the following drive Armanti Edwards found the endzone on a 10-yard rush to make the score 38-35.

All Arkansas State needed at this point was to chew the clock, which they did without a problem.

"I don't mind losing, I really don't", travis a.d. continued, "but some of the plays the CPU made in this game were simply mind boggling".

        PLAYERS OF THE GAME
Arkansas State - Reggie Arnold, 22 rush, 232 yards, 4 TD
Appalachian - Armanti Edwards, 14-35, 216 yards, 128 rush yards, 3 total TD

Dream Season Ends With Bowl Loss
Offense looks sloppy as Mountaineers surrender late 4th quarter lead

QB J.J. McDermott was un-freakin-stoppable, both on the ground and through the air

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- This wasn't how things were supposed to end. The 2009 season up to this point had been beyond any Mountaineer fan's wildest dreams, and a win in the New Orleans Bowl simply would have been icing on the cake.

But it was not meant to be.

Appalachian State, who took an early 13-0 lead thanks to two field goals and a pick-6, must have let their momentum get the best of them because for the remainder of the New Orleans Bowl, they just weren't the same team we had seen all year.

After allowing an 8-yard TD pass from J.J. McDermott to Bryce Lunday right before halftime, CoCo Hillary would turn around and fumble the ensuing kickoff, handing the ball right back to the Mustangs who would capitalize with a 22 yard field goal in the final minute of the second quarter.

The Mountaineers watched their 13-0 advantage quickly turn to 13-10, but they still carried that slight lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

Sophomore Ed Gainey returned an INT 38 yards for a TD in the 2nd quarter

That is, until yet another fumble, this time by Armanti Edwards, was returned 42 yards to the house in the 3rd quarter, giving SMU their first lead of the game.

The Mountaineers were not ready to quit just yet, as 2nd string HB Cedric Baker pounded the ball in from 3 yards out on their next drive, pushing Appalachian State back in front 20-17 heading into the 4th quarter.

Edwards would throw his 2nd interception of the night to Bryan McCann, with just over 6 minutes left in the game. McCann, who caught both INTs thrown by Ewards, brought the ball all the way back to the Appalachian State 10 yard line and two plays later, McDermott ran it in from 2 yards out.

"I know this isn't how Armanti wanted to go out", coach travis a.d. said of his Senior QB's final college game, "he got a few tough breaks out there tonight but if it weren't for him, we probably would have gotten our @$$'es kicked".

The final nail in the coffin was an 18 yard rushing score by Bryce Lunday with just 3 minutes left. Appalachian State was outscored 21-7 in the second half and ended the night with 5 total turnovers.
Both teams finish the '09 season with 8-5 records. SMU ends the year on a hot streak, victorious in 4 of their last 5 games.

              PLAYERS OF THE GAME

SMU - B. McCann, 9 tackles, tackle for loss
              Appalachian - A. Williams, 4 tackles, 3 tackle for loss, 3 sacks

                Notre Dame Takes BCS Championship

                27 FINAL 30

In a national championship game for the ages, Notre Dame edged the Boise State Broncos for their first national championship since 1988 (or 1993, depends which way you look at it). Unfortunately, I am a bit of a moron and I advanced to the offseason before I could check the stats from this game, so I won't have a writeup or the final rankings of the year. Whoops. I do know, however, that Notre Dame finished the year a perfect 13-0 and Boise's final record was 12-1 (8-0).

                    One And Done!
Appalachian State receives offer to leave Sun Belt, heads for greener pastures

Well that certainly didn't take very long.

Just as Appalachian State was getting comfortable with their Sun Belt surroundings, coach travis a.d. received an offer to move on up to play in Conference-USA.

Thanks to a lackluster 1-11 season by the Tulane Green Wave in '09, Appalachian State will be replacing them beginning in 2010. The teams will "flip-flop", meaning Tulane will take App. State's place in the Sun Belt and vice versa. The Mountaineers are now members of the C-USA West division (which really makes no sense geographically).

Coming off an impressive 8-5 record in 2009, their first as an FBS school, Appalachian State's team prestige went from 1-star to 2-stars.
                    Just kidding.

                      travis a.d. Accepts Contract Extension

It looks like coach travis a.d. won't be going anywhere for quite some time. During the 2010 offseason Appalachian State offered the second-year coach a 4-year extension, which will extend his coaching time in Boone through at least through the 2015 season.

The main goals set by the athletic department in 2009 were to have a winning season and receive a bowl bid. Both tasks were handled easily, and the Mountaineer faithful are expecting big things from their team in years to come.
                      Just kidding.
